Thank you for your information. Emma Skeggs also appears on a foundation stone at the Presbyterian Church of Dunedin. I am unable to visit the Northern Cemetery, to read the headstone
but it may contain some links. Emma Skeggs also occurs as wife of Edmund Skeggs(a cousin of my great great grandfather who died in 1917 in London.

One
possibility is that the Skeggs removed from English debter prisons (see
"The Original Lists of Emigrants in Bondage from London to the American
Colonies 1719-1744"), and sent to the Virginia colonies, were the first
Skeggs.

Some common Irish names which are still used in the clan are Liam
(William), Elis (Elizabeth), Aine (Anne), Cait (Kate), Cathal (Charles),
Eoin (John), Seamus (James), Sean(John) and Tadhg (Timothy).

Poll tax records from England mention Thomas Skegg, German born, in 1739.
George and William Skegg sailed for America on April 21,1741.

The Skaggs family coat-of-arms was first recorded when given to Edward
Skegges and his older brother, John (County Huntingdon, St. Ives), on 6
September 1568. The motto for the Skaggs family coat-of-arms, usually
displayed on a winding ribbon, is "Vincit Veritas," which means
"TruthConquers."

Another story of the Skaggs family is found in "Arkansas and Its People"
Vol. IV, p. 482 edited by David Y.Thomas, Prof. of History and Political
Science at the University of Arkansas. Published in 1930, by the American
Historical Society of N.Y. This branch of the family came from Kent
County, England, and were early settlers in the Virginia Colonies and
later Maryland.

According to "Notes From The Register of the Kentucky State Historical
Society", Vol 5, p. 179 (Folsum Club Quarterly), there were six grandsons
of an Irishman who fled Ireland to Maryland after the siege of
Londonderry. Some of them were Long Hunters. Three of the brothers, Henry,
Charles and Richard settled in Taylor County on Green River. Another
version, from "The life of Daniel Boone," written by Lyman C Draper, has
Henry, Charles and Richard Skaggs, and three other brothers, as grandsons
of an Irishman who fled from Londonderry, Ireland, in 1688-'89

Skeggs in 1787 Kentucky

In doing some research on the Skaggs family, I came across the following story (this is printed in the History of Kentucky, plus several other books)

"In April, 1787, the house of Widow Skeggs, on Cooper's run, Bourbon County, was attacked at night by Indians. There were 2 sons and four daughters, one a widow with a babe....."

1 son was killed, 1 son escaped
The eldest daughters was killed and the youngest daughter was killed at the house, l daughter taken captive, but later killed. The widowed daughter and child escaped.

Does anyone know who this Widow Skeggs and children would have been?
Thanks, Carol

Hi - I'm just surfing and read your post. I know nothing about genealogy protocol for these posts.

My husband is Richard Skeggs, born in Hatfield.
His father was Joe Skeggs (died around 6 years ago) married to Peggy Pluck, but I understand that the Skeggs family were from Hertfordshire previously.

Please email me if you think there is a link with your Skeggs and will check out what my mother in law knows - Skeggs is such an unusual name.

We were told that in Icelandic that it means 'hairy one'!

Sorry I don't have proper details but get in touch if we can help. Cath.lovatt@heart.nhs.uk

I

Alas I do not have any twigs on this lady.
Mine are iin England in 1901 census

I guess you cannot find her in earlier census - I suppose if she is a Skeggs widow she could have married and been widowed after 1920.

So does anyone else on Skeggs board ahev US contacts...
I am an Indiana Jones so you know what difficulties I am experiencing. However I search all links and in the 1930 Census -Cliffford M. Jones is listed as head of house at 2345 English Avenue in Indianapolis IN with his wife Alice B. (35 yrs), daughter Mary Lee (3 8/12 yrs) and a widow sister in law named W. D. Skeggs (age 32) It shows Widow Skeggs was first married at age 22. and that she was born in KY. Widow Skeggs first name is on the census but I cannot read it. It looks like it could be W--ie. She was not listed as living with this family in the 1920 US census when they resided in Sumner TN. Do you have any twigs that match?
