Re: Walter Frank Skelding's Family

Walter Howard Skelding [WHS] was the son of Walter Frank Skelding [WFS]. WFS was a younger brother of my ancestor [James Skelding]. This means that we are disant cousins, but I'm not certain how many times removed. James Skelding was my Great, Great, Great, Grandfather.

If you are interested, I can email you a brief family tree which [at the moment], I can trace back to Frederick Skelding [b.abt.1800].

I was not aware that WHS had served at Gallipoli in WW1.

Could you please confirm, or add to, following data:-

1. Eileen m. Erik P.Bergstedt in Oct Q.1935. They had at least a dau. Karin L.Bergstedt [b. Oct Q.1936]. She m. John D.Spink in July Q.1957. They had at least 2 children, Carine E.A.Spink [b.April Q.1958] & Nicola M.Spink [b.July Q.1960].
2. Denis Howard Skelding m. Stella Scott-Elliot in Jan Q.1938.They had at least 1 child Barry H.Skelding [b.Jan Q.1945]. Barry m. Margaret M.Carnege in July Q.1977.They had 2 daus [do not know their names].

I have also traced the careers & addresses of your branch of the family.
My paternal grandmother was Ethel Skeliding born in Stafforshire, England January 1,1900. her father was Joseph Skeliding and her mother Elizabeth Brookes. They immigrated to Canada and had 5 children. Joe Skelding returned to England in the 20s? Where he died at Brierley Hill. Are these the Skeldings you are researching

Peter

Many thanks for your recent email & I must apologise for my late reply. I have only just returned home after a fabulous cruise in the Med & now feel ready for more work on the "SKELDINGS".

Your email is of great interest to me as so many names/places are the same for both our families. I will list the most important ones to see if we can add to our existing data bank.

1. Your grandfather was W.H.Skelding & his wife Rosa Hatwell. They married July Q.19113 in Hackney. Your WHS [born April Q.1883 in Birmingham] would appear to be the second son of my Walter Frank Skelding.

2.Walter & Rosa had a daughter Eileen Lillian Bradley & two sons Denis Howard & Anthony R. Same as the data in your last email.

3. Your father's three brothers all workrd in the East End of London. My Walter's sons also worked in the same area. From various London Directories, I know that WHS in 1911 was a Manufacturer's Agent at 118 Wood St, London. In 1939, he was still in the same position at the same address. His brother - Frank was an Export Buyer at 112 Mill St, London.

4. In the London Gazette dated 6th March 1931, Walter Howard Skelding was applying for a discharge of Bankruptcy from the High Court of Justice & on 21st Apil 1931 he was "discharged"from bankruptcy - but the verdict was suspended for one year. Do you have any further data on this item?

I look forward to getting more data from you & it is a pleasure to establish that we come from the same stock!!

Regards
Graham Skelding.

Re: Walter Frank Skelding's Family

Graham

Not much information really, and a long time after you posted the thread back in 2009.

Anyway my Grandfather was W H Skelding and his wife was Rosa (Nee Hartwell).

My father, Anthony Roy Skelding, was born of 30th January 1923 at 92, Cecil Park, Crouch End. London N. 8.
Walter and Rosa had three children, a daughter Eileen Lillian Bradley who was born on 13th January 1914 and an another son Denis Howard Skelding born 17th January 1916. Strange that we were all born on the same month! I am a little perplexed as as far as i am able to accertain from my father, WHS was on active service with the British Army at Gallipoli Circa 1915-6. I suppose miracles do happen!

I am led to believe that we were a fairly opulent family employing a nanny for my father and two domestic maids. Rosa and Walter were both keen golfers and were members of South Herts Golf Club. They were also avid Bridge players and used to play every Sunday evening either at home or with their friends Mr. & Mrs Elliott-Brooks who lived at Rose Cottage, Crouch Hill. WHS was a devoted Mason and became master of his lodge. By accounts from my father WHS was very autocratic.

I understand from my father that WHS was a manufacturer’s agent dealing mainly in cotton materials, the Sea
Island Textile Co perhaps. He also handled Gablon Jewellery imported from Czechoslovakia. He had an office at 118, Wood Street. London .EC1. He ( WHS ) had three brothers Frank (Who had an adjacent office, Percy who had a window cleaning business, and Jack who had a very successful Ironmongery business in the East End.
of London..

My father ( Anthony Roy Skelding ) moved to 42, Priory Road, Hornsey, and N.8. after the war, later moving to North London, Hertfordshire and then to Devon. Both Dennis and Anthony ( Tony ) are deceased. Dennis has one surviving Son Barry and Tony Has two Children Christine Anne and Peter Anthony

If i can feed you any more information please feel free to contact me

Re: George Skelding

Hello everyone,

I've recently started to research my husbands family tree and came across a marriage between a Matilda Skelding and Isaac Robins. Matilda was one of the daughters of George Skelding and Pheoby (the 1851 census spelling) Holloway.

I noticed that someone stated like a few of you have the 1841 Census, but I've been given census returns for the 1851 census, staing that Father George was 42 then and Matilda, aged 10 and a nurse.. along with son George aged 7 months then.. so I am a little confused, as I have Matilda Skelding born December quarter of 1841 in Stourbridge District, so George senior would have been aged 32 then and George junior not born. I also have all the other siblings on the 1851 census too, also living at Perrins Lane.

I am very interested in learning more about our family, we do seem to be all connected; even though I am only related by marriage twice.

I also noticed on the 1851 census a mention of Ann Forrest, either George of Pheoby's neice and a John Dowley, the nephew of the same people; but I don't know by whom they are related, maybe one of you may know and could tell me. I'd love to learn more and discover more about the family.

I've also read that a Skelding was involved in the 1842 Dudley nail riots, but the website I saw a few days back only gave an initial and I can't remember what that was at present.

I look forward to hear any more news to piece together for my family.

Regards,

Liz Robins

George Skelding; Fort Macleod, Alberta

Below is the obit of Geo. Skelding. I am currently residing in the home he built in 1902 for he and his wife, in Fort Macleod, AB, Canada. He was quite a prominent businessman here; had no children or relatives that I can find. If anyone is related I would love to exchange info. He was also the first MLA for this area.

Skelding, George
George came to the Fort Macleod district in 1885 where he worked at the Cochrane ranch for nine years, as well as at the Strong ranch. George was born in 1865 at Belmont, Ontario and died at Fort Macleod in 1927. He was married at Fort Macleod in 1904 to Anne Renwick, who was born in 1876 at Moffat, Dumfriesshire, Scotland and died at Fort Macleod in 1956. When he left the Strong ranch he moved to Cardston as a Cattle buyer, then returned to Fort Macleod where he established a coal business and also dealt with hay, grain and feed. He was a partner in a Grocery and Retail store - Baker and Skelding, which was later sold to Macleods Supply Company. George represented the Macleod Constituency in the Alberta Legislature from 1917 to 1921.
Died June 17, 1927
I have had a look on the 1911 census and Alfred was living with his parents Benjamin and Jane in Garretts Lane, Old Hill together with brother Benjamin who was 2 years older.
The births of both children were registered in Stourbridge and there was a marriage between Benjamin Skelding and (I think) Mary Jane Collins in Sept 1902.

I am trying to trace the family of Walter Frank Skelding who m.Mary Ann Bradley June Q.1880 in Kings Norton. They were both born in Birmingham.

In the 1901C, they were living in Islington, London.

Walter Frank Skelding, aged 43yrs was a "Commercial Traveller".
His wife, aged 45yrs was a house wife.

There were 4 children:-

1. Frank: b.abt.1882 in Birmingham. In 1901C, he was a "Commercial Clerk Shipping", .
2. Walter Howard: b.June Q.1883 in Birmingham. In 1901C, he was an "Accountant Clerk". I believe that he m.Rosa Hartwell in Sept.Q.1913 in Hackney, London.
3. Percy: b.June Q.1887 in Birmingham. In 1901C, he was an "Office Boy".
4. Annie: b. June Q.1890 in Birmingham. In 1901C, she was a "Scholar".

If anyone has a connection to this family, I would really appreciate a reply.

Regards
Graham Skelding.

Re: Samuel Skelding - London Southwark

Hi Graham,
Samuel Skelding was my Great Grandfather on my mother's side and thanks to some very good information from Gary Skelding, we have been able to piece together a lot of his son's, my grandfather's life(another Samuel)that was previously unknown to us.

Samuel Skelding (my Great Grandfather who was killed in WW1 at Gallipoli was born in 1876 died 1915 whilst trying to get off a troop ship. He was cut down by machine gun fire. My grandfather and his siblings were placed in to Barnardo's when their father was killed by their mother Ellen Skelding nee Bailey.

Samuel Skelding that you are enquiring about was fathered by Samuel Skelding b1824 d1900 and mothered by Ann Gardner whom was his second wife. His first wife, Mary Ann Rowland may have died in childbirth.

Samuel Skelding b1824 was fathered by Montague Skelding c27/12/1778 and apparently died in may 1884 at Marlborough Poor House of chronic bronchitis. This would have made him 106 years old and I can't help thinking this may be an error as the life expectancy of the poor back then was very low. 106 years old seems excessive to me.

It gets very sketchy earlier to that but Montague may have been fathered by Henry Skelding and Jane somebody.

I have a photograph of Samuel Skelding in his Dublin Fusiliers uniform.

As there is a break in the Skelding lineage re Samuel due to there being two females who were only children - my mother and myself, my fiancee and I have agreed to call our son, if we have one, Samuel.

I have further information about siblings if you need it.

Sylvia Spence

At present, I only know that they had at least 9 children & that Mary Jane was their second dau. If you have any details of the other siblings, could you please email them to me. Your lineage is connected to the main Skelding Family Tree which can be traced back to the Tudor period.

Graham Skelding.

Sue, have no idea when they got married or where. I suspect in England before they came over - some time between 1911 and 1914 when my Uncle Bill was born. Difficult to determine which ship and port destination, let alone departure date. Hopefully the 1911 census will have loads of info. How old as William when your greataunt Nellie knew him? Any idea when he returned to England for the "family problem"? Would have been expesive to travel in those days.

Pat

Hi Sue,

So glad you were able to confirm what I already knew about Jemima marrying Edward Gilbert. Census records indicate that William was a private in the infantry in 1901. My grandparents were rather tight-lipped about their life in England so it's been difficult to piece together any info about their lives prior to arriving in Canada, hence my mix up between the Jemimas - Taylor and Allchurch. I find it interesting that they named their four children after some of their family members back home:

William 1914-1971
Robert 1916-1982
Gertrude 1918?-?
Edward 1923-1996 (my Dad)

(William 1874-1956 Maud 1880-1965)

No family photos other than pics taken in Canada when they were in their late seventies. Gramma (Maud Cummings) was always very prim and proper - peaches and cream complexion with her white hair always done up in a bun. Granpa always serious with a stiff military stature.

Pat

You've provided me with so much information - this certainly takes me down a different path and leads me to so many more questions.

You mentioned that Jemima and William Skelding Sr had two children - William and Harriet. Was Harriet the first born? Did Jemima remarry after William Sr's death?

Pat

I recently noticed that there were two William Skeldings listed in the 1871 Census. One married to Jemima Allchurch and the other to Jemima Taylor. Jemima Taylor's name had not been listed in the Ancestry database when I started doing my research. How confusing... Can you tell me more about Jemima Taylor - when/where was born, parents, siblings, etc?

Pat (Sue's sister)

Thank you for adding more pieces to the puzzle. My sister is compiling a family tree and your info will help. Ironically my granfather Willaim Jr. named his only daughter "Gertrude".
The Canadian Pacific Railway has it's own police force (still does) and my father continued in the same career as William Jr.in Montreal.

Sue
