There is an Archibald Skiles who supposedly married a Rebecca McKeehan in Carlisle, PA around 1818.

One of the sons is "Geddes" Skiles with no known birthdate.

John G's middle name is "Gettis", as given to me by Shelby-Oakland Cemetery. He was most definitely born in Carlisle, PA. He was born in the range of 1824-1826.

He appears in the 1850 Newton, Cumberland, PA census with his wife and two of their children. The Archibald Skiles who is a son of Thomas Skiles (1758-) supposedly died in Newton PA in 1841.

If you're still watching this site, I have a question about the Skiles family that is said to be Hannah Skiles' family. I found Hannah in the 1850 census, Greene, Tennessee, presumably the widow of William Hardin, who missed both the 1840 and 1850 censuses. I found family trees that state she is descended from the Skiles family of Maryland, but advancing her age by quite a bit--instead of the 1795 she claims (and which seems to correspond to the dates of the children she bore), she is supposed to have been born in 1783, making her a bit too old for some of the children's birthdates. These trees list her mother as Ann Murphy and her father as William Skiles of Frederick, Maryland. Do you have any information that would support those claims? Thank you for any help you can provide. I am including my email address because I've never been contacted on previous requests and don't want to miss your answer.

Sharon Carver
Aighaid@aol.com

Evidence that Thomas Shiall's wife was previously Alice Waller---
A document in Somerset County Judicial Records, 1671-1675 Vol 87 pg 7 states "Capias vers Thomas Shiall and Alce his wife Alias Wallor in a plea of Debt in the Sute of Arthur Upshur pro quer Jno: Avery
withdrawne ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ " Link: http://www.aomol.net/000001/000087/html/am87--7.html

Evidence of Marriage to John Waller---1) John Major's Will. John is Alices brother. Will divides plantation between step brother Richard Johnson and Cousin William Waller. Alice Major Waller's son with John Waller.

To brother Richard Johnson a mare in culler gray and my bed and what belongs thereunto and my wearing cloathes. Cousin William Waller. Sister Elizabeth Johnson a red cow and her increase. Godson Owen Ocollena. Plantation to be divided between brother Richard Johnson & William Waller, my mother loving [sic] upon the said plantation as long as she is in ye condition she is in. To my mother my servants, she maintaining my brother Richard, reversion to brother Richard Johnson. Brother William Major & Andrew Finnie overseers over what is left unto the children. Witt: Owen Ocollena, Andrew Finnie, William Major..2)A land record in which John Shiles refers to John Wallers descendants as his niece and nephew. Here's the link: http://www.goldenlyon.com/connaway.html
The property is Might of Had More. 3) Shiles grandaugthters named Alice and Major, Waller daughters and granddaughters named Alice and Major. 4) Follow this interesting discussion where Alice Major Waller Shiles daughter's (Major Waller) husband Arnold Elzey bails out one of the Shiles grandaughters on charges of fornication. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/LOWER-DELMARVA...
Evidence of Alice Major Waller Shiles Whitty--- Alice married Richard Whitty and had a daughter named Sarah. After Alice's death, Richard Whitty's wife kicks Sarah out of the house. The same Arnold Elzey, married to Major WALLER [Alice's daughter with John Waller], is named as guardian for Sarah. Arnold is listed as Sarah's brother-in-law in these documents. Therefore, Sarah Whitty and Alice Waller are sisters.
188 ~ Petition of Arnold Elzey to have guardian appointed for Sarah Whitty, orphan daughter of Capt. Richard Whitty; Sarah and her mother Dorthea were joint executrixes of Whitty’s estate, Sarah had been turned out by Dorthea and Elzey is currently providing for her; Court orders she remain with Elzey until June Court; summons Dorthea Whitty to appear following day.

188 ~ On 17 March Sarah and Dorthea Whitty appear in Court; Whitty’s will is read; Court asks Sarah where she wishes to stay and she says with her brother, Arnold Elzey; Court rules she remain with Elzey until June Court; directs John Bozman and George Betts to make an account of Whitty’s estate.

Somerset County Judicial Records, 1692-1693
Volume 406, Page 189

15 JUNE 1693

242 ~ Sarah Whitty, orphan daughter and executrix of Capt.
I expect the majority of Skiles descend from Thomas Shiels,Shialls,Shiles (note spelling) Sk replaced Sh sound when some of the Shiles moved to German Lancaster County, PA.
Thomas' birthdate is anyones guess. But,in 1660 Thomas is sentenced to twenty lashes for associating with Quakers. Assuming the age of majority was 18-21 years, Thomas born before 1642

Re: Lillie Colorado Skiles

I am creating a family tree for the descendants of William Skiles and Julia Thompson. The reason is that a great granchild (Leah Janetta Munro Manning, the daughter of Lillie's sister Lois) died 12/9/2011 and we are administering her estate. My wife somehow determined that Lillie married Ernest (sp?) Eddy on 1/5/1903. Apparently Lillie was born in 1872 and died 9/28/1938. My wife also believes they had a daugher Lania (sp?) who was born in 1908. If you can email me at dcs@bhlaw.com, I will send you the family tree we have developed. We think Lania may have had a son, Bruce Ivy, who lives in California, but we have been unable to determine this.

Dave Streicher

I don't know where they get their info. I haven't found any concrete evidence.he died in 1881, maybe he did, but some of these people on ancestry.com just copy other peoples stuff without verifying. It's a pride thing for me, I want it right. You don't have to keep searching
for Moses, you' be got your hands full with Ann. Thanks for your help.

According to several Family trees, Moses T was born 1844 in Schuyler, Ill. and died in 1881 in same place. He was married to Louvisa Mitchel 1850-1907 and had six children: Dora 1869-1944, James D 1872-1932, Sidney 1874-1917, Blanche 1875-1963, Peter 1880-, Albert Peter 1881-1900. Now it could be that Reter and Albert Peter could be the same person. I don't know for sure. All of this info is from Ancestry.com public member trees and there are many of them.
And yes! It does seem that Ann Murphy just materialized out of thin air. My records indicate that she was Cherokee Indian. Which of course i would love to prove. Oh well....

Yes, George M and Polly Justus had Moses Justus and James Ralston and Elizabeth Ann Reno had Moses T, born about 1844. I have an Illinois marriage record from 1851-1900 shows him marrying Louisa Mitchell. Also have an 1850 & 70 census and Civil war record that shows him enlisting on 10-27-1863 and a Civil War Soldiers paper that shows he received a dishonorable discharge on 10-5-1864. Louisa remarried in 1881, before that she ran a house of ill repute because my brother has the indictment record that she had to go to court over it. I have to get the date on those papers because I know she ran it before marrying Beghtol and she surely wouldn't have run it when Moses was alive. Louisa shows a son Peter Skiles, but I don't believe he was Moses child. They were a bunch of rascals huh? Dishonorable discharge, house of ill repute . . . guess I won't find any real important people on that side of the family ha ha. Thanks for checking though.

Looking through the other family trees and other sources, I am begining to think that your Moses T. is actualy Moses Justus. I have not found any referance to a Moses T., and George M. was married to a Mary Ann or Mary Polly or Mary Ann "Polly" Justice (Justus). I can find no other wives for George M. and giving the custom of incorporating the wife's maiden name into a childs name, My money is on Moses Justus.

Wow, how did you end up in Oaklahoma? Haven't got that far with Ann Murphy, but I'll do some snooping around later after work. What happened? Did she fall off the face of the earth? I'm having a helluva time trying to dig up any information, newspaper, anything, on Moses T, not Moses Justus, people have posted in webrootsancestry.com that he died Oct 13, 1877, but that's not my GGGF. My dad told me he was a preacher, but didn't make much money so he bought a team of horses and would help farmers with plowing, etc. After finishing late one afternoon in Beardstown, Illinois, he took the ferry boat across the Illinois River, he always carried a large amount of cash. He never disembarked and he was never seen again. My dad thinks he met with foul play, thieves stole his money and threw him overboard. He was married to Louisa Mitchell and I have information that he was declared dead in 1877, also Moses Justus died in 1877, so it's very confusing.
I am descended from Thomas C, Thomas Sr, Thomas Jr, John, Ephraim, John (and you descend from William), then George, then James Ralston (and you John) Moses T,, James D, William Elmer.
George left Maryland for Illinois, my relatives lived in Rushville for many years. William Elmer left for Michigan and that's how I ended up here.
Sorry for talking so much. This stuff is interesting isnt it?
Have a nice day!

He later traveled to MD, where he began his family with Alice.

My lineage follows down to my g-grandfather Jacob Clemens Skiles Jr and grandfather Jacob Clemment Skiles.

I've just about completed this lineage, but I don't want to leave anything out that may be on the missing pages.
I just saw your post. Would you happen to have info on John Paul SKILES, born abt 1815-1821, Bertie Co., NC who married Ava Rilla (maybe Averella or some variation) WATERS. She was born abt 1825-1830 in NC. I have that they both died in 1881 in Bertie Co., NC.

I think they are the parents of Lettie A. SKILES born abt 1880-1882, NC and married Emmett R. SADLER.

I'm not sure of any of the info I have and would appreciate corrections and/or additional info.
Re: Skiles, John; son John G. out of PA

John G (Geddes/Gettis) Skiles may be the son of Margaret Ann Geddes (1803-1878). He was born in 1825 or 1826. Margaret Geddes married a William H Woodburn in 1828 and John G may have been raised in this household. John G may have named his son, William Woodburn Skiles, after W H Woodburn.

The information is scant at this point, so its really me just connecting the dots. Margaret Geddes may have never married a Skiles so it might be impossible to find a Skiles link.

I wish you would have posted the information that you have on this John and Elisebeth Skiles from Carlisle. Is Elisabeth's maiden name Geddes?

William Woodburn Skiles 1849-1904 PA and OH

Who were his grandparents?

William Woodburn Skiles is the brother of my great great grandfather John Clark Skiles (1855-1906). He was a former US Congressman out of Ohio and he and his brother George M ran the law firm "Skiles & Skiles" in Shelby, OH. They moved from Stoughstown PA in 1855 with their father John G (Gettis??) Skiles, mother Sarah J Martin, and siblings.

John G is the real mystery for me. I need to know his parents. He was born in PA the range of 1824-1826 and died in Shelby, OH in 1891. He married Sarah J in 1847. Thats all I know.

I have my lineage traced back very accurately to this point but I fear I've hit a dead end.
