Richard,it's been a while since you posted but I hope you are still on this service. I am trying to find the family of Elizabeth Slaney (spinster) who married Thomas Brewster (widower) 23 Jun 1783 in St. Michael's church, Penkridge, Staffordshire. (above information from FreeREG.org). I don't know her parent's name, birthdate or birthplace but I would guess born about 1760 as Thomas Brewster was born in 1754 in Brewood, Staffordshire and was a miller at Stretton Mill, near Penkridge.

Do you have any information on the Penkridge branch of the Slaney family that would help me?

Many thanks in advance, Tom

Claudette, Hi cuz! I'm confused. If you look up David Slaney Geneology.com (descendants of David, b.1762) you'll find Donette & siblings Victor,Casamir,Benedict - but no Creusa. However, I think Donette is the FATHER of a Creusa born in 1920 (Herb's mom?).
Donette's dad was Alexadre & he had a brother Arcule. Arcule had a daughter Mary Elizabeth b. 1900. In the 1930 US Census your grandmother is listed as Mary (not Creusa)born in 1900. She is also Mary on the USMC document on which she signed my old man into the service (he was under 18)in 1942.
Can't find the Creusa born in 1896. Help!

hello carl,

i know that at this time you have found your william, as anita, Peter, now sadly died and billy as I no him are my cousins. my name is Edith Blinkhorn formally Slaney and I live in the Chorley area, I do know your mother, although I have not seen her for years, and remember she once lived in Collier Street here in Chorley. You are a year older than my own Son, and once over we were all very close but time slips by and seperations come. I was close to Peter and am still close to Anita, but have not seen Billy in a long time. I am now retired I was a tutor at Lancashire Collage, and taught Local and Family History. I do have a wealth of Slaney family history from the present right back to the 1600s and if you would like a copy of it plus some family photos I am at present putting it all together for my own children and our
Yorkshire cousins. you would be very welcome to a copy of it all. You come from a great heritage, and it would be nice for you to have some knowledge of it. I know you must be interested in family history or you wouldnt be on this site. I have seen your enquiry before, but time was not really right but it seems it is now. Well if you would like to get in touch, just email me on annblinkhorn@yahoo.co.uk best wishes Edith Slaney Blinkhorn.

My mom is from Liverpool, and my dad was from Blackpool England. I just thought I would check this site out, when I seen your message. My parents had their coat of arms done some years ago, and if I remember rightly, the family tree. I'm not sure if theres a relation, it's just the name is unusaul. I'll have to talk to her about it, as she has family in England she does keep in touch with. However Sam Slaney, my grandfather died some years ago and my father Peter just passed away a couple of months ago.

In researching my wifes family tree, I have found that her great great grandfather Francis White (born 1816) married a Mary Slaney in 1843 (born 1821). She had been his servant (he was a farmer), and already had a 3 year old son (born 1840) at the time they married. The son was called John Slaney amd took the name John Slaney White after the marriage. They Lived in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, Where Francis and Mary remained. John eventually moved to St Helens in Lancashire. Has anyone any information about either Francis Or Mary which might take me further back in my search.

I have just read your request for info on Charles Richard Slaney which is about 5 years old so I hope you are still researching. Charles was my great uncle, the youngest child of James and Jessie Slaney from Mansfield. My great grandfather James was in the Grenadier Guards and they moved around a bit, hence Kensington. My great grandmother was also Jessie and sister to Charles. My grandmother was the daughter of Jessie and George Young. If you want to share info, please let me know.
Sally

Thomas James Slaney, son of John Slaney, b. Nottinghamshire c.1847

I'm researching my 2x great grandfather, Thomas James Slaney b.circa 1847 in Nottinghamshire (exact birth location unknown).

He married Cicely Fletcher, a widow (nee Sharples) in Manchester Catholic Parish Church in January 1874 and they had two children - Thomas James b.November 1874 (my great grandfather) and Henrietta b.1877 - before Cicely died in 1879. There were also four children from Cicely's first marriage.

According to their marriage certificate, Thomas was the son of John Slaney, whose occupation is recorded as mechanic. Census records for 1881 and the marriage cert all point to Thomas being born around 1847.

In searching the earlier census records, I'm struggling to find an entry which fits all the criteria. The nearest I can get is a Thomas James Slaney born about 1850 in Carrington, Nottinghamshire, parents John and Sarah, with John's occupation recorded as a Sheriff's Bailiff.

Can anyone help?

Hello Donna. Thank you very much for your willingness to help me.

Well my Slaneys come from Yorkshire i believe. My Great Grandad, William Slaney was in the Prince of Wales Own Regiment during WW2. I found out that he was captured and taken to Stalag 2B where he escaped but was later caught and recaptured because there was snow and the escapees had left tracks which led the Germans to them. After he was taken back he was beaten and torchered. After that i am no so sure. I have found some people who i believe may have been the people who escaped with them but one had passed away and the other i cannot contact due to him living in America and his email refusing mine.

If you have any information that may help that would be amazing. Thank you once again for your interest. I was wondering though, do you have any relatives with the surname of Slaney?

Hello Herb,
Actually, Creusa was a common name in St. Lawrence and, I may be wrong on this, however, I think it was due to the Italian influence there. St. Lawrence became home to a family of Giovanani's that immigrated from Italy. I know there was a Creusa Giovannani in St. Lawrnece and several other females were called that name as well. My records indicates two Creusa Giovanni's that died in St. Lawrence (1896 and 1902) I believe the name is derived from Greek mythology. I've a Cruesa Slaney in my data base being the daughter of Donette Slaney and Gladys Pike.
Hope this helps.
Roger Slaney
Hi Mary, My grandfather's name was Sylvester Slaney and he was from St. Lawrence, Nfld. He died in the 1960's of cancer but other than that, I can't tell you much offhand. I do have some family history papers that were sent to me by my sister and they would have more info in them. I recently moved house so it would take some time to find the papers but I'm willing to try if you send me an email.
Re: Donald Murray

Hi Mike, My name is Herb Stacey and I am the son of the former Creusa Slaney, born October 19, 1920 in St. Lawrence Nfld. My cousin already replied to your request for info ( hi Lola) but I am very curious myself as to whether there could be more than one person of that name. It sounds unlikely, given that I have never heard the name Creusa in any medium in my lifetime. In fact, I am on this site by accident, simply looking up the origin of the given name Creusa.
What I can tell you is that my mother lived in St. John's for a brief time, probably in the late 1930's, taking education courses at a Catholic College. I think the name of the institution was Littledale, but I'm not sure of that. That was the only time that she resided in St. John's as far as I know.
Now comes the interesting part: While she was living there, she had a suitor who later went on to become a priest. I have no idea what his name was but I did hear it once and Murray does not ring a bell. What is interesting to me is that the oldest living sibling in my family is a female born in 1948, however we were told there was a boy born sometime earlier (in 47 or 46? not sure) who lived to the age of ten months and died of gastroenteritis because of bad water in the rapidly growing town of Stephenville. My parents rarely talked about this child and we assumed it was simply because it was too painful a memory for them. It just seems like too much of a coincidence that your mother's name would be Creusa Slaney....there just can't be any other person by that name west of Ireland. Could you please email me (killiansdad10@hotmail.com) so we could chat a bit? I would very much like to know when you were born, where your father was from, and things like that. Who knows, maybe the bad water story was just a story....?! I guess stranger things have happened in the world. Thanks in advance, Herb
Thanks for the reply, I have a record of Sansom SLANEY baptised at Mansfield, St Peter's on 7 FEB 1790 to Matthew and Mary. I haven't made a definate connection but Henry SLANEY was baptised in 1808 also at St Peter's to William and Ann, William married Ann RODGERS in 1802, I think its possible that William and Sansom were brothers, William and Ann had 6 children John, Henry, William, Ann, Matthew and Mary. I haven't gone any further back than that but I will keep in touch if I find a definate connection. They were all from Pleasley Hill.
