Are you the Patrick McMorris of Australia who has contacted Ivan Tate re the Sleigh family?.He suggested that I should contact you.
My ancestor Edward Cumming was employed by and lived with the Sleigh family at Lauriston Gardener's House,Crammond,Scotland(according to the 1851 Census). As Ancestry does not get access to the original census have you copied the whole household including owners and servants?.I ask because I have been dna matched with someone who had ancestors in the area and it is possible one was working at the Castle.

Walter Sleigh 1876 to 1933

I have obtained a death certificate for this person thinking it was my husband's grandfather but now I am not so sure.
If anyone thinks it might be their Walter Sleigh, they are welcome to the certificate.
He died aged 57 on 30 March 1933. The informant was his daughter Annie but we have no knowledge of a daughter called Annie. Family lore tells us that our Walter was a ships engineer but this Walter was a Painter and decorator.
However, he lived in Wolverhampton which is where our Walter lived - or so we thought.

Hello,
I have just returned from Melbourne, Australia, where I have been trying to trace ancestors, particularly my Great Great Grandfather, Robert Lunam. I know he was born in Scotland in 1829. His parents were Jane Sleigh and David Lunam. Robert arrived in Melbourne in about 1853. My brother has been researching the family for a long time and has a bit of information on the Lunams. My brother thinks that father David and 3 sons, David, Thomas and Robert all emigrated to Melbourne, but not mother, Jane Sleigh.
My father, David Kay, his father was Jack Kay whose parents were Edward Kay and Annie Young Lunam. I hope some of this is of interest to you.
Sarah

Re: The Sleighs of Derbyshire and Beyond

Dear Peter,
I am descended from Gervase Seigh and Elizabeth Brereton (their daughter Helen married Samuel Endon and I come from that line). I am trying to take the family history further back and have a genealogy from the Wolley manuscripts, which has no dates and have found several trees on Family Search, some of which I am fairly sure have mixed two lines (there are so many Hughs, Gervases, Ralphs etc.)
Does Arthur Sleigh's book give details about the early lines? - the earliest ancestor I have is Hugh Sleigh of Pillsbury, gentleman, who had a son Richard who married Margery Hoskins. If so I would so love to see a more detialed tree for this period!
I am also descended via the Lankford family from Thomas Sleigh of Boothlow, Staffordshire who married Catherine Bulkeley (born 1679). I think Thomas was the son of Ralph Sleigh of Sheen, born in 1672, and am sure he must link to my earlier Sleighs but have not been able to find a father for Ralph. If you could help with that I would be so grateful.
Family commitments make it impossible to travel to Derbyshire at present.
If you can let me have further information I would be so grateful. My e-mail is christine.blanks@yahoo.co.uk.
I have been following up historical references, and have some 17th century wills, so if there is anything I can do to help you, please let me know.
Thank you so much for responding. The Sleighs are turning into such a fascinating family!
Best wishes,
Christine

I am really looking forward to being able to see the book! I tried to order it on inter-library loan but it is so scarce that they refused to lend it, so I think the only chance I have of seeing it at the moment is going to Leek library, and I don't know when I shall be able to manage that. How long is the book? Would it be feasible to
photocopy it and sell photocopies, or scan and print it out?I would be happy to buy a photocopy, though I do realise that is horribly labour-intensive.
Best wishes,
Christine

I'm especially interested in information on marriage of William (may be James William) Mason and Mary (may be Mary Christiana) Sleigh in/around north Louisiana from 1800-1850. Anything, no matter how small would be helpful. Thank you.

I've just been doing a bit of browsing and hit your message.
Coincidentally I've got Arthur's book on my knee as I type!
I corresponded with Arthur in 1993 and gave him some information which helped him to correct this.
I lived in Spain up to 2 years ago where I met a Peter Crofton SLEIGH, a property repairer and the owner of a art gallery in Polop near Alicante. I had located him from a local English language newspaper which a neighbour had given us to use as a toilet for a new puppy about 1999!!! Talk about serendipity. I think he came from the London area. He was related to Arthur but I suspect estranged. He was interested but not beyond that. We didn't maitain a connection.
I am descended from Ralph SLEIGH and Letitia REAZEN through their son, Horatio. Arthur was also descended from Ralph and Letitia through their son, William Nash (1762-1831)
William Nash SLEIGH married Margaret WILLCOCKS. One of their sons, Adderley Willcocks SLEIGH introduced the Crofton but he didn't marry a Crofton so I don't know where the name came from but Arthur was definitely from that lot.
Let me know if I can help.
Peter Sleigh

Dear Marion,

I have been perusing the internet for connections regarding my heritage and came across this web-site and your message.

I found out last week, through my Uncle, Peter Crofton Sleigh that Arthur did indeed write a book. Sadly, Arthur has since passed away. Peter said that he was going to attempt to find me a copy of it through Arthur's widow, however he wasn't sure if that would be possible.

I wonder if you could tell me how you came about the book.

I was thrilled to see your post!

Kind Regards,

Sasha Jacobs

PS MY Mother's maiden name was Crofton-Sleigh. Somehow the Crofton was added to one line of the family and (you probably know) the C before Arthur's name would stand for Crofton.

The short answer is "No" but I've just done a quick search on Genes Reunited and there are two people with Crofton-Sleigh. The names are Charlotte Mary Crofton-Sleigh born 1959,and Peter (birth not given) both being posted by Catriona; also Peter born 1920, Nicholas 1952, and Howard 1956 posted by Peter. Hope this helps. If you enrol on Genes Reunited you'll be able to send them a message and possibly access their family tree. In my experience GR is the best place on the "Net" for a quick answer to your sort of question, and it only costs £8 a year for unlimited access. Regards, Frank Baynham

Hi Karen,

David Lunam and Jean Sleigh are my GGG grandparents.
I'm pretty sure that Jean was born in 1792 at Cockburnspath, Berwickshire to John Sleigh and Janet Darling.

David Lunam and some of his children emigrated to Australia (presumably after Jean's death), David dying there in 1853.

I would be very interested to learn which of their children emigrated to Canada.

Yours,

John Bridges

HI again Karen.

I've done a bit more digging this evening and established that Jean Sleigh was christened on 19 Feb 1792 at Cockburnspath.

John Sleigh and Janet Darling were married on 20 May 1785 at Coldingham, Berwicxkshire. All this can be found on the LDS Family Search.

John Bridges.

Can you give me some details of your family Sleigh and do you know if any of them worked for the Caron Company?
I have a Carron Note from 1787 issued to a Daniel Sleigh whom, I'm told, was a relative. Perhaps the father of three Sleigh daughters born in Larbert.

G/day Ben,
In the Post Office Directory of 1860, Rosebank cemetery
was then known as Edinburgh & Leith Cemetery. It was
opened by the Edinburgh & Leith Cemetery Company in 1846.
Rosebank Cemetery is in Pilrig St, Edinburgh, situated between Leith Walk & Ferry Rd.
Rosebank is the last resting place of many Leith merchants
and shipowners. It is still in use and well mentained by
Edinburgh City Council. Photographer Alan Wilson,
has taken some fine photographs of Rosebank cemetery.
I too, have made enquiries re ancestors buried there.
In Section '' D '' No w/275 Daniel Sleigh, purchased a family
plot on the 18thNov,1889. Eight feet by three feet in Section
''D''. He paid four pounds'ten shillings for the section.
Register Vol 9 No333. Section D W/275. I'd be interested
to know who's buried there. Perhaps Archibald and Julia !!!
I have asked if anyone can help with a listing of names of
those buried at Rosebank. There may be 'something' on the
Net !!
Hope this helps.
Patrick.

Do you know if any of them came to the United States. I am particularly looking for the following ---

Looking back earlier for SLEIGH/SLEE ancestry starting with Francis SLEE (1786-1867), who was from Westmoreland County, PA (south of Pittsburgh), and took his wife, Mary (1786-1850), and his three children: Mary Elizabeth (1827-1909), Francis (1815-1884), and Elias (1811-1888) to Ohio maybe in the 1830's to either Jefferson or Henry Counties, then to Texas Township??, Crawford County, OH. He was a farmer as far as we know. He may have died in Crawford County, OH. His daughter, Mary Elizabeth, was my great grandmother, marrying Martin J. SPITLER in 1853. They lived on a farm in Bloom Twp., Seneca County, and had a number of children.

Ring any bells? Thanks.

Hello, I am trying to trace the branch of the Sleigh family from south - eastern Scotland (Berwick). The ancestor I am trying to trace is Jean Sleigh (dob unknown, but she married David Lunam on June 5, 1813 and they had several children, at least one of whom emigrated to Campbell's Bay, Quebec).

Jean Sleigh married David Lunam in the parish of Innerwick, East Lothian, which is one county away from Berwick in Scotland. I noted your reference to a book by Arthur Sleigh; I would be very interested in it - do you know if it addresses any Sleighs in southern Scotland? Also, where would I be able to obtain a copy. Thank you very much for your time.
Karen Clifford

Ralph Sleigh & Letitia Reazen of Cove, County Cork

I am directly descended from Ralph SLEIGH and Letitia REAZEN from Cove, County Cork through their son, Horatio (baptised 11th December 1779 and presumed to have died young by Arthur F.C.SLEIGH).
Horatio married Mary EARNSHAW on the 17th March 1799 at Lancaster. He was described as a sailor. I have only been able to find one offspring, my great X 2 grandfather, Ralph baptised on the 13th July 1800.
I have a reasonably comprehensive record of Ralph's descendants but there are other SLEIGH families recorded in 19th century Lancashire. I wonder if these were descended from unknown siblings of Ralph or if more of Ralph and Letitia's children survived into adulthood.
