I am looking for a Merle Rita Slocum daughter of George and Nellie Slocum. I have only found one census report from 1930 on her. Haven't been able to find much else I do know that she pasted away in 1972. And was married to Ervin(Irvin) Hughes in New Orleans LA. She had 5 children one that past away in the late 50s and 4 living children when she pasted. And on some of her children's birth cert. she signed her maiden name as Williams and on the others as Slocum. We are unsure if she was a birth child of Mr. and Mrs. Slocum or adopted. But we believe she may be adopted.

Randy: I would like the address and cost of the book. We talked many years ago but I sort of burned out and am just now getting my information in order. This brings me to Elephel Fitzgerald. Is there any real authority on who her parents were. It runs in my mind that an early slocum stated that she worked in the home as a maid and he didn't see how she could have been related to the nobility. But I just don't know.
Also, we are related to the Slocums through Elizabeth Slocum's marriage to Jacob Lyon. She was the daughter of Joseph Slocum and Elizabeth Wright. She married (2) a Joseph Slocum. While not on our direct line, I wondered if you had ever been successful in putting him with a family. Judi

Re: Slocum Family in New York

I have nothing on your Jonathan but I have a fair amount of information, including Easton meeting records in the area, for the Slocum family. My records cover Washington, Dutchess, Saratoga and Rensselaer counties and some Warren county. I have meeting records for Saratoga, Easton and Troy, Saratoga was daughter of the New York City meeting. Easton was daughter of Saratoga. Troy was daughter of Easton until the reformer split.

Kee in mind many of the Slocums were "dischurched" according to legend for serving in the American Revolution. There was a Slocum rumned powder mill in Rensselaer county.

The earliest Slocum in the area was a Benjamin who shows among the 1754 purchasers of land from the Van Rensselaers/

I'm looking for information on a John J Slocum born ca 1804 Saratoga County, according to NY census? John married Asenath Haviland and shows in Frost's Haviland genealogy. John is buried in the Warren cemetery-- died 1881. Asenath is buried in Quarker Hill there.

I have long suspected John is connected to Fitzgerald Slocum and his wife Elizabeth Mayhew who married an Ezra Billings in Saratoga as her second husband. Fitzgerald's son Fitch is buried in Saratoga County. The Slocum books show Fitgerald lost at sea in 1803 but records of his ship at Mystic Museum say he was still master of the coastal trader, the two masted sloop Industry, as of 1807 when it was taken by the British. There's an error for him somewhere. Does it include a missing son?

I have not found what looks like a reasonable alternative to Fitzgerald but of course census information is not always accurate.

Be happy to share my research and would love any information about John J. He was not the Rev John Jay son of the merchant Philip Slocum and his wife (cna't recall first name)Slade of Pittstown.

Slocum Family in New York

Does any one have more information on the Jonathan Slocum family of White Creek, New York which is family 101 on page 117 of the book "Short History of the Slocums of America by Charles Elihu Slocum. I feel perhaps my great ,great grandfather is Jonathan's son Otis. My ancestor is Otis D. Slocum, he married a Sarah Comstock of Cambridge New York. He ran a mercantile store he bought from a Rice family in White Creek , Washington Co, New York around 1830 and is in the White Creek census in White Creek Twp, in 1830.Iam wondering if Johathan Comstocks other sons , Perry, Giles Cushman, Gideon, Charles are his brothers and if Jonathan's other son listed as Otis perhaps is Otis D Slocum. Would appreciate hearing from any one who might be able to give me some input on them?
Otis D Slocums and his wife Sarah had a daugther named Hannah who is my great grandmother, and she died around 1868 in Mount Vernon , Iowa. I lost Otis D. Slocum after 1830.
Early Slocums in America

I found the following excerpt in the site "Defiance County
Ohio Genealogy Trails,A part of the Genealogy Trails History Group. It was orginally published in Defiance County Biographies (Commemorative biographical record of northwestern Ohio, Chicago: J. H. Beers & Co., 1899).

I am vaguely related to many of the old Quaker families from New England, not a Slocum expert. But this excerpt seemed to have details that others might find useful.

"The subject of the article was CHARLES ELIHU SLOCUM, M. D., PH. D., and his Slocum ancestry is given in some detyail that might be helpful to others.

Charles Elihu Slocum, M. D., Ph. D., physician, banker and philanthropist, of Defiance , Ohio , is of pure English ancestry, the ancient home of his race being near Taunton, Somersetshire, England.

The founder of the branch in the United States from which our subject descends was one Anthony Slocombe, who came to America with his wife and family at the time of the absolute and despotic reign of King Charles L, and was one of the first purchasers in 1637 of several townships of land around the present site of Taunton, Massachusetts, which town he helped to found. It was in the records of this purchase that the clerk gave the present spelling to the surname. American marriages have kept the blood of the descendants of this first American ancestor in pure English lines.

The direct ancestors of Doctor Slocum, covering eight generations in America, are as follows: Anthony's son Giles, born in England, was a young married man when he came from his native country, his wife's given name being Joann. He was prominent in the colony of Rhode Island , as a man of large possessions, and was also a leading member of the Society of Friends, the family affiliating with that religious body on its first appearance in New England in 1656. The descendants continued in that relation until after the Revolutionary war, when removal to eastern New York widely separated them from the Society. Giles and Joann Slocum had a family of nine children, the youngest of which was a son, Eleazer, born the 25th day of "10th month," 1664, in Portsmouth , Rhode Island. He became a resident of Dartmouth,Massachusetts,in1684. He married Elephel Fitzgerald, and one of their sons, also named Eleazer, born January 20, 1694, married Deborah Smith, and had a son, John, born August 4, 1717, who became a yeoman and trader. He married Deborah Almy, and had a son, Eleazer, born May 15, 1744, in Dartmouth , Massachusetts , who married Anstace Viall, and this couple, after the Revolutionary war, removed with their family to what is now known as Northville, Fulton County, New York, which remained the family home for many years. Joseph, the eldest son of Eleazer and Anstace Slocum, was born February 6, 1766, in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, and was married in Cambridge, New York, to Elizabeth Wright in 1790. Their second son, Caleb Wright Slocum, our subject's father, was born in Northville, New York, October 22, 1797, and died there in 1864. He was a man of strong character and high standing, and was engaged in various business enterprises, being a farmer, merchant, tanner and manufacturer. His wife, Elizabeth (Bass), was born at Northville, November 25, 1798, and died there in 1866. Coming now to the ninth generation, we return to our subject, who is also a native of Northville , New York, born December 30, 1841. His early education was obtained with the aim of preparing himself for teaching and general business, his studies being pursued in the schools of his native town, and by his own exertions in Fort Edward Collegiate Institute, and at Poughkeepsie , New York. Several years of his early manhood were passed partly in attending school and partly in teaching in public and private schools with ascending grades. His services were also in demand as instructor in teachers institutes."

Hello, I was wondering if you could give me some information about the Slocum Family. What kind of people they were, and to also see how much you know about my Grandfather George H. O. Slocum. My Uncle said he would always light a candle before dinner time. My Uncle Eldon found that to be unusual. My Uncle was from my Grandmother's First Husband. Also, do you know anything about the Hawes Side of the Family? My Dad looks a lot like his Dad. If you look at my Family Tree, you can see the resemblance. I'm curious if Grandfather's Personality matches my Dad's in any way. Thanks for your time. My E-Mail Address is sherril44@yahoo.com. I will be glad to give you my Home and Cell Phone to exchange stories. Thanks In Advance.

Thomas F Evans and Mary E Slocum are the names of my Great Grandparents. Mary Slocum was born in NJ in 1867. The 1930 census says her parents were born in NJ. She died December 1933. I am still working on getting the correct Thomas Evans. My Grandfather was also Thomas Evans. He was born in 1894.
Mary Slocum is from a Slocum family that had a famous military leader. I am trying to make a connection. Let me know what information you are looking for.

My maiden name was Helen A Evans. My Great Grandmother was Mary E Slocum and my Great Grandfather was Thomas Evans. That is a part of my tree that I am having a hard time with right now. My grandfather had a brother Harold that lived in Philadephia and a sister Margaret that married my grandmother's bother James M Mckale. I have information on Margaret's parents but I didn't keep it because it indicated she was from another state. I know that Mary Slocum lived with my grandparents for awhile toward the end of her life and I knew some of their children. This Mary Slocum died 12/18/1933. Does that match the Slocum Family Cemetery in IL?

Am searching for information on the following Slocum family.

1880, Decatur, Van Buren Co, Michigan, family 394/480. Harmon B Slocum 31 clerk in grain warehouse born New York
wife: Charlott E 30 music teacher born New York
son: Ralph A 9 at school born New York (most probably Northville, Fulton Co NY)

1900 Minturn Precinct 6, Eagle Co Colorado, family 136/142
Ralph A Slocum partner b Apr 1870 30 born New York; single. He was a partner with William Jones, a butcher, who seems to have had a resturant where Ralph was the bookkeeper.

Charlotte E. Blake Slocum born 1850 in New York, was a daughter of John F. Blake and Louisa Rowland; John was a physician who practiced many years in Northville, Fulton Co NY.

I can only find the one 1880 census for Harmaon and Charlotte Slocum and the 1900 which appears to be their son, Ralph. I would like to determine when/where they died and resided after 1880.

Is there any chance that this Slocum family known to originate in Northville, Fulton Co NY, is related to the Slocums indicated in your Slocum family bible?

Also of interest is your mention of marriage to Walter Bellinger/Beglinger. Louisa Rowland (wife of John F. Blake) is the SISTER to Caroline Rowland who married a Peter Bellinger in Saratoga Co NY. So I do feel there must be a connection to Harmon Slocum and Charlotte Blake as the migration patterns seem to follow the same paths.

I will greatly appreciate hearing from you to know if there is a connection with your Slocum family.

Betty Hellums Rowland

Please visit my tree "Austins of Woodstock, IL" to find info on Mary Ellen Slocum, the Austins, and the Quackenbush. I'm in the process of editing the enormous amount of errors I have in my tree. The duplicate "junk" should be corrected by the end of next week. So, if you have some questions now, send me a note and I'll fill you in! Hope I've helped you.

Absolutely, I have no info on Jane Quackenbush other than being born in 1814, and little on the Austin branch going back. I also do not have your Grandfather recorded. Any help would be appreciated.
My great grandfather, Barton Slade Austin, is one of the 8 sons of William and Jane Quackenbush Austin of Salem, NY. I believe you are looking into one of their other sons, William. If you are still interested in son info, let me know. I'm still searching much of the family all the time.
Jane
