Hi Carmen,
My Grandfather was George, brother to David, Roy, Frank and so many more. He married Beatrice Sedillo from Texas and he and his brothers all moved to Los Angeles after WWII. My mother is Sandra, she is 4th born of 8, of which there are 7 children surviving and of course my grandmother who is still alive. My Grandfather has been deceased since 1989. I live in the Los Angeles area as do most of the Sloss' from David, Frank, and George. Where is your family located?

Hello JSloss77, Your grandfather was Roy Sloss, correct? I just posted some information on the "Sloss'from Texas born early 1900's of Mexican ancestry" blog. Your grandmother's name was "Betty?" and she was a white lady, right? Grandpa Pete Sloss was half white and his father was white. I am not sure if Joseph and Natalia were his parents because if you look at the Census information attached, they did not have a son names Pedro or Pete of Peter. So I am confused that Uncle David Sloss said his grandfather was named Joseph?? Please email me and let me know if one of the twins was your mother or father (I can't remember if the twins were a boy and girl?).

Sloss' from Texas born early 1900's of Mexican ancestry - Sloss ...

Also, wanted to give everyone additional information that I know of. First of all, Pedro and Eloise Sloss were the parents, the brothers were Pete Solis (half-brother) from my Grandmother Eloise Sloss' first marriage, then it was George, Frank, Joe, David and Roy (2nd to the youngest child). Then there was Consuelo/Connie, Esperanza/Hope and Amparo/Margie (my mother); I believe they were all born in Bay City, TX. All have passed except for Uncle David and I guess a couple of you have or will be contacting him. Grandfather Pedro Sloss was born on 11/19/1894 and Grandmother Eloise Garcia Sloss was born in Mexico somewhere. I have not been able to locate Pedro Sloss'
Birth Certificate or Marriage License, just a death certificate. What I found interesting is that Uncle Joe has a son, I never knew that. I just went out to the Veterans Memorial in Riverside, CA to visit my dad who had passed on July 4, 2011 and had been buried there. Uncle David told me that Uncle Joe was buried there as well, so I
took some flowers to his gravesite. He was always such a loner and I felt no one had been to see him in years?? In any case the Pedro Sloss' all moved their families to Lawndale, Hawthorne and Redondo Beach in the early 50's, maybe 1952 or 1953. The census information that is in the Blog listing the Joseph and Natalia Sloss' children does not list Pedro Sloss and the census information on David Sloss' children does not list Pedro. Uncle David told me that 4 brothers moved from Pennsylvania to Texas and that a couple of the brothers were in the Confederate Army during the Civil war. I have no idea if James Sloss/Alabama and Joseph are related. I did find information about the Sloss Furnace business in Sloss, Alabama. If you do a search on the Sloss surname it comes up originating in Scotland. Another spelling which is Schloss is German. We all thought we were part German, surprise. I'm not sure yet but I think James and Joseph were the first generation born in the US??
In any case, thanks for all the information. Let me know if any of you know the names of the other 2 brothers.

I have been searching the google/bing engines for Sloss ancestry and finally subscribed to "Archives.com." Well, I also hit a brickwall there because I could not remember that my Uncle David Sloss, who lives in Redondo Beach, CA had told me his grandfather's name was Joseph until I hit this "Sloss' from Texas born early 1900's of Mexican ancestry" blog. So now I have great hope that I can put the pieces together.
Richard was Will's younger brother---lost track of Richard. Will and Hattie adopted my husband in 1945. He does not remember much. There was also a Christine Sloss Roberson? Possibly Richard's daughter, approx 1913. Could use any help!! Thx

Hi, I'm currently doing research on my family tree and believe I'm a relative of Joseph Sloss. My name is Natalia Hetfield Wolting and I'm named after my great-great grandmother Natalia Mugersa Sloss on my mother's side.

In speaking to some family this weekend, I found-out that Natalia's husband Joseph lived in Texas and fought in the civil war for the south so I believe we're speaking of the same person. I was also told he was a judge and wanted to verify that this is correct.

His wife Natalia actually immigrated from Spain and is not Mexican which is why she had light skin and blue eyes. In looking at the cenus their child Elvera Sloss would be my great-grandmother.

Please send me more information if possible as I'm trying to dig deeper into my family tree.

Thanks!
Natalia Wolting

Hi Lynne,

The only Sloss I was aware of that early on was a James Sloss who was awarded a medal for his part in the Indian Mutiny. That's a lot farther on from the time you're aiming for.

I did a quick search of the india office site and likewise came up with nothing close enough.

http://indiafamily.bl.uk/UI/Home.aspx

However, assuming that she was born in India and then gets married back in Derry I would expect that her father was most likely a soldier (possibly a missionary).

The national archives for the uk record more than one soldier called Sloss from Maghera and Magherafelt in roughly the right period but they appear to being discharged circa 1808-1813. That doesn't mean they couldn't have rejoined or that others didn't follow a similar career.

Not sure how you would follow that up though. I'm guessing you've already seen this (does contain Slosses but not linked to Tobermore)

http://www.torrens.org.uk/Genealogy/BannValley/church/conten...

Did you have any luck searching for a passenger list for their arrival in Australia? There might be the off chance that they were accompanied by other relatives.

If there was a list and there was a Sloss family on it you could look for Elizabeth, her husband or her children turning up as witnesses at events in Australia which might imply a family connection.

Innes

Hi Innes,

My Great Grandfather Alexander CAIN was the youngest (known) son of Elizabeth SLOSS. He was born about 1863. The first child I know of was Isabella who was born about 1841. Assuming Elizabeth was about 20 when her first child was born I guess a birth somewhere around 1820?

Would you be able to give me any information about the SLOSSES in India?

Kind regards
Lynne

Lynne,

When (roughly) would Elizabeth have been born?

There have been Slosses in India but I only know of a handful for definite.

Australia wouldn't be too bad for a one-name study as your starting point isn't too far back. I gathered information a while back and if memory serves the majority are from the UK & Ireland along with some from Germany. I don't recall any from elsewhere in europe but it's been a while since I looked.

Black's Surnames of Scotland describes Sloss as a 'curtailed form of Auchincloss' and points to early seventeenth century Ayrshire for early examples. Richard Sloas, Merchant Burgess in Ayr is mentioned in 1600. Various individuals by the surname of Assloss are mentioned in a Teind Roll of 1559.

That said the origins vary with your Sloss ancestors. In some circumstances their original surname may have been different.

Innes

I am trying to find information about my 2xGGrandmother Elizabeth SLOSS. As I've had no luck so far in finding any information other than that she married George CAIN. Her children were all born in Derry, Ireland. Family lore says she may have been born in India. Does any one have any information? I am thinking about trying a One-Name-Study of the family beginning with the SLOSS family in Australia. Anyone else tried something like this? Also after information re the origin of the surname.
I read the History of the "Sloss Furnace" and Sloss Family in Alabama. They did iron works, and welding.
Funny how the Sloss family down here worked at Anglo Iron Works and had Sloss Welding Shop for years.
Perhaps Jose Sloss was really Joe or Joseph Sloss.
The Sloss Family in Alabama was James Sloss and his father's name was Joseph Sloss.
Hmmmmmmm
From research of my family roots:
In Nuevo Leon, Mexico, an American Soldier with Zachary Taylor's troops mustered out near Monterry, Mexico and stayed there to live. Mostly because he married a Mexican (really a white skinned, blue eyed Spanish girl) and stayed and raised a family. His name was John Smith and he is listed under the name Juan Smith, Juan Esmith Juan Esmitt.
So, maybe Jose is really Joe or Joseph. You never know.
K.

I am searching for details re my 2 x Great Grandmother Elizabeth Sloss. Married to George (or James) Cain. I have no other details except that their children Isabella (b. abt 1841); James (b. abt 1841); Martha (b. abt 1850); and Alexander (b. abt 1863); were all born in Derry, Ireland and emigrated to Australia in late 1800's.

This family are my 'brick wall' and I am in need of help as I am researching for medical information regarding a genetic condition.

Help please!

Lynne

Sloss' from Texas born early 1900's of Mexican ancestry

My Grandfather was born in 1916 "he was the second to the youngest" and his brothers were born in Bay City Texas. Their names were George Sloss, David Sloss, Frank Sloss, Pete Sloss, Joe Sloss and their fathers name was Pete Sloss and he was also born in Texas. It is possible that my great grandfather was white and his mother was mexican from mexico. The mystery is killing us all! MY grandfather had 8 children all born in CA.
