Judy:

If you haven't received it yet, I was just sent a copy of your Smallacombe family tree from one of your nieces. Your grandmother, Florence, married my gg-uncle, Thomas Mann Wilson. We also may be distantly related through Catherine Davis. I have a Catherine Davis m. to a Myers, John Jones & a Smith. I have 2 of her Myers daughters (Sara & Margaret) marrying Smallacombes. Catherine's son, Paul Jones, married one of my Cooper relatives.

Toni Darwin

Lottie Smallacombe was my Great Aunt. She lived on Rushbrook Ave. in Jermyn until her death. She was my Grandmother Florence Smallacombe Wilson's sister. Lottie had no children, but adopted two. My Grandmother had 3 boys. I grew up in Jermyn. We all attended the Smith-Smallacombe family reunion in Nay Aug Park. The house my mother lives in was the Smallacombe house. My family and I are now in Cincinnati, OH.

I believe the Leonard you are talking about was my father. He was a policeman in Scranton for 32 years. He used to keep the mailing address and news for the annual Smith-Smallacombe family reunions held at Nay Aug Park in Scranton. I remember the name Willard. Here is as much info as I can remember about my Dad's family. He was born to Daniel and Elizabeth (Meyers) in 1902 in Scranton. Daniel was a blacksmith I believe. They had 13 children. The only ones I can remember were Dan who lived in Stroudsburg, William (Bill, who was married to someone we always called Aunt Lizzy), Elvira, who my sister is named after. I cannot remember anyone else. My dad had a child named Marilyn by a previous marriage before he married my mother (Mary Payton from Olyphant). I just talked to my sister Elvira and will e-mail Marilyn to see if they can fill in any blanks.
Edward,
The Smallacombe family in PA was rather large. I understand 5 Smallacombe brothers came to the USA from France. I am researching this family for my children. Their mother was Mary Lou Smallacombe, the Daughter of Bert Smallacombe who was killed in the waar in 1944. Bert was the son of William and Etta (Oakly) Smallacombe. He had severaal brothers and sisters. I have listings for a Danial Smallacombe, but only one Elizabeth in a previous generation. William was married twice and raised a family with each wife. The children of William and Etta are:
Bert, Frank, Willard, Edward, Harold, Ruth and John James.
If you would e-mail me at forgette@mtsu.edu I will be glad to send you what I have.

Hello. I stumbled onto this board by accident. I was born to Leonard and Mary (Payton) Smallacombe in Scranton. My dad was a policeman there for 30+ years. If I remember correctly, he was 1 of 13 children. I believe his father was Daniel but not sure. I never kept up with the family tree. I do remember a Aunt Liz and a Uncle Dan (Stroudsburg). They used to hold a Smith-Smallacombe family reunion at Nay Aug Park for many years. I would be interested in hearing any info about the family tree. My son (Leonard) recently asked me for some info but I couldn't come up with much.
Happy to hear from you again. My grandfather had 4 more children after he remarried, Marian, William, Emerson and Nathanial. I met them at my grandfather's funeral and that was the first time I had seen my grandfather! As far as I know, my dad was born in the Scranton area and I have an old address of 419 Sussex St., Old Forge, Pa. and I was born in Taylor, but our home at the time was 312 Sussex St. My dad and his brothers were raised by their grandmother Smallacombe after their folks divorced and the sister Ruth went to live with their mother. I remember my greatgrand-mother lived down the street from us and I think the area was called Bush Patch or some-thing to that effect. My dad quit school and went to work, but then I think he went back to night school to get his HS degree. I have pictures packed away somewhere of old family members. In anticipation of selling our home here, I've been packing up some of the extra "stuff" we tend to accumulate.
We now live in Lake Havasu City, Az. and hope to move to the Prescott area of Az.
We have a little Park Model mobile in Dewey, Az. we use as a summer residence and will be heading up there in May. Our email address there is missibessi@excite.com or bjwonderly@juno.com. Our email here is bjwonderly@redrivernet.com.
I would really appreciate a copy of your finished family tree. I forwarded this link to one of my sons in NJ and he's excited to hear all about it.
We were all close to Uncle Ed, but never got to see any of the others too much although I did have a surprise 40th anniversary party for my folks back in NJ in '67 and my dad got to see some brothers he hadn't seen in many years.
If I round up any additional info, I'll forward it on to you.
Thanks again for your notes.

Mary's Middle name is Lou. I always called her
Mary as do most people. Her family still calls
her Mary Lou. And YES, I Love The Internet and e-mail.
I remember her talking about her Uncle Willard many times. She had contact with her Uncle and Aunt Frank and Della in the 70's.
I am still researching your grandfathers family in the census
of Lackawanna County. Without a bourough or township to
by, it is a long search. There are a lot of people
in that county. Now that I think of it, do you know your fathers birthplace, and
where he grew up.
I will be glad to send you the completed tree for the Smallacombe's when I complete it.

OOPS!!!I didn't read your correction to your message---------Your EX was at our home those many years past. Isn't this email wonderful? Isn't her name Mary Ann or did she drop the Ann as I did Jean in my name. I talked to Robert several years ago and discovered we had each lost an older son. I believe he's in Fla. now but was living in NJ when we spoke.
I don't know if you knew about the upteenth-great uncle who hid in a cave for several days outside of WilkesBarre, Pa. while the indians killed all the other white people in the Wyoming Valley. There's supposedly a placque on the entrance to the cave.
Guess that's about it for now. Thanks for all your info too.

My exwife, Mary Smallacombe Forgette Novotny was the grand daughter
of Bert Smallacombe. It appears that William
(1st)never married since the census shows his with
no children and living with John. Now the only question I have toresearch is
Who was you father's grandfather. I don't believe it was
Henry, since I find him in the 1920 census listing his children.
I really appreciate your help. I am doing this
tree for my children and their mothers side
was in limbo. All I have on Mary's mothers side is her grandmothers
name. I have traced both sides of my family
to the 1600's. Once again, THANK YOU

They divorced and both remarried. There also was uncle Emerson(William's brother) who was mentally unstable. William had an additional 4 children with his new wife. I am the only child of Willard, Ed had no children, Bert had 4 children and he was killed during WW2. Harold and Frank each had several children. I, in turn had 4 sons Boys seem to run in the Smallacombe family! Keep in touch, perhaps I can dig up somemore about the family. I never knew my grandparents since my dad sort of divorced his parents!
Where do you fit into this family?

Betty,
Thankas for the much needed information. I have found Elizabeth (Johns wife) in the PA census for 1900. John must have died by this time. It shows her living with 2 sons. William, and the second son's name is hard to read, but looks like Burt. This does not compute. What I don't have, are your fathers sisters and brothers. I have Willard, Frank, and Bert (no age for Bert), but thats all I am sure of. Also, you show Willard's great grandfather, but Do you know his father and mother's name? Either one!
I also show William and John (John and Elizabeth) in Jermyn in 1920 living on Madison Ave. William was 56, and John was 58. I have also found Henry's Family living on Jefferson Ave in the 1920 census. It appears he had two daughters, and two sons.

This info was typed out by my dad, Willard Smallacombe in 1969, two years before his death.
Lottie Smallacombe who is the daughter of Henry Smallacombe and Leonard Smallacombe, the son of Daniel related this information to him.
Dad's great grandfather was names John. His wife was named Elizabeth Ann Matters. They came from England about 1865 and they had seven sons, Henry, William, Joseph, George, Daniel, John and Frank. Frank died in infancy.
The names of Devonshire, Cornwall and Lizards Point or Endwere mentioned. He arrived in America alone to supervise the opening of several mine shafts. A family from England knew him
and had him come here. He sent money for his family to come over, but his wife refused to travel alone so he returned to accompany them. Their son Daniel was 2 yrs. old at the time and he also brought his mother in law. They settled in Jermyn, Pa.

They also had a favorite nephew who was a Bobby in London.

William and Joseph lived in the old homestead until their deaths. William was a mason contractor, Joseph had a nervous break-down and William took care of him. Daniel was a blacksmith, George was a milkman with several teams of horses.
My dad's grandfather and Henry were mine foremen.
All the elder members of the family are buried in Jermyn or Scranton, Pa.

I too am a Smallacombe. My father, Willard was the oldest of 7 children of William and Etta Smallacombe. He was born 1906 and grew up in Pennsylvania. He visited London in the 60's and called a Smallacombe in the phone book from south of London. They met for lunch and had quite a reunion.

SYDNEY JAMES SMALLACOMBE was born between 1872 and 1875. We believe he was born around Lancashire England (not too Sure) His brother was named lenard and thats all i have on him. My grandfather inlaw died in 1977 and my grandmther inlaw memory is going. I can't get any information from her. You wouldn't happen to know where in England and parents and other siblings also aunts and uncles maybe this way we can figure out if this is a match.

I know that Sydney landed in holland Manitoba Canada and he married Harriet Hatton. They had 3 children Earl(grandpa), Beatrice and Edna.
