Thanks for checking.Mine was born and died in Ga for sure.Interestingly though mine did live in Arkansas from time to time. She and Emory Martin adopted their cousin's child who ended up in Arkansas.Eunice would go live with her adopted son and family occasionally. I have seen my Eunice's date of birth as 1899,1901,& 1902.The 1899 is the correct one.

I have the subscription until August so if there is ever anything you think of that you would want me to look up, just let me know. Perhaps even something on the new census when it comes out in April.

Talk to you soon.
Nancy

Nancy,
You have just hit the tip of the iceberg of confusion with this family tree. One thing I do know, like most families, they often named their kids after relatives. In the Sultan family they were big on repeating Charles, Henry, Mary or Marie. My mother's GF was Charles and had 2 cousins named Charles.

Anyway, Andrew is really got me stumped. I wasn't able to research anything today and I doubt that I can get to it much tomorrow. I've got a couple of busy days coming up, so if you don't hear from me, don't fret.

Also, I only have a 14 day trial of Ancestry. I haven't really gotten any new records that I didn't already have, so I am not sure that I will continue. But I would like to continue to stay in contact with you. I have about another week before I lose my trial membership.

Talk to you in a few days.
Laurie

Laurie,

Very confusing.......... I checked my reports and I have Frederic listed on the 1870 census as the son of Andrew and on the 1880 census as the son of Henry!!!!! Could they both have had a son born the same year with the same name?

Henry, the son of Andrew is the one who married Lena Spiznas. Is Andrew also a son of Killian?

Nancy

Hi Nancy, I am finding more questions than answers, but here goes.

Henry 1831 2nd son of Killian and Marie Sultan , born Wachenheim, Pfalz, Germany.

Not sure about Marie yet.
The others on the list are Sultan children, some children of Henry and some of Andrew. It's Andrew that I have no idea about....never heard of him before. But I am still looking into him.

Henry's children
Charles 1858
Edward 1866
Frank 1869
Matilda 1871

Andrew and Mary's children
Henry 1856
charles 1858
Frederick 1864
Edward 1866
Francis 1869

The problem with those 2 lists is that both claim Edward 1866.....so another question.

SO, so far is that as clear as mud?

I'll keep plugging along with this and hopefully we can figure it out
Laurie
Laurie,
I will write down the names and dates in the bible and perhaps you can make some sense of it:

Henry Sr. 1831
Marie 1836
Henry V. 1856
Charles W. 1858
William 1860
Marie L. 1862
Fred 1864
Edward 1866
Otto 1868
Frank C. 1869
Mathilda E.1871
Mary 1874
William G. 1880
Mrs. Henry V. Sultan Jr. May 26, 1861
(Lena Spitznas)

On the next page was marriages:

Henry Sultan to Marie L. Henning Sept. 12, 1855
Henry V. Sultan to Lena Spitznas Jan. 14, 1878
Fred W. Sultan to Ida Froebel June 10th 1890
Henry Sultan Sr. to Emma Saffrey Sept. 17, 1876

Under this is listed the marriages of the children of Henry and Lena.

Let me know if you figure anything out.

Nancy

My great great GF Killian Sultan B. Germany 1797, M. Maria. Came to this country 1840 (approx)with children Valentine (1826), Henry (1831), Leonard (1836) and Susan (1839). Then married Twalenia Ledig from NJ in 1841 and had Mary (1842), Louisa (1847) Amelia (1845), married Phillipina Ledig and had Charles (1849) and John (1875). Charles married Margaret Ayres, and their daughter Kate married Andrew Phelan, who had one daughter Catherine, my mother. I have a number of cousins though from the other children of Charles and Margaret. Valentine married Dorothea Keppler 4 Oct 1888, and had Frederick, Mary, Julia and William. He sold liquor. Henry married Emma and had Charles, Frank, Edward, Frederick, and Matilda, and had the Stag Hall, 50 Hanover, Baltimore. Leonard married Catherine, had William and Leonard. Susan is only mentioned in one census, 1850. Louisa is mentioned in 1900 age52. John I haven't found except once. When ever I research I find the Henry who married Lena, and I pass him by b/c I know he's not the one I'm looking for...but is there a connection? Henry Valentin Sultan is probably the one in your Bible. How nice that you have that!! I will only continue on this one thread so we don't repeat or get confused. I hope that we can figure out this puzzle.
Laurie

She had sent me a copy of a portrait of Lena that was painted by Louis P. Deiterich who also painted Edwin and John Wilkes Booth among other prominent people.

You have much more information on the Sultan Family than I do. In searching my records, it appears there is a Henry Sulton I found on the census records who was married to an Emma and was listed as a salon keeper. I have a copy of a Sulton bible and it says Henry married Emma Saffrey in 1876.....but, this is not who my ancestor married. She (Lena Spitznas) married Henry Sulton in 1878. They are both listed in the family bible. Then there was another Henry who married a Marie Henning in 1855. I cannot find a mention of a Valentine on the bible pages but there is a Henry V. Sulton. Who is your ancestor?
My Henry Sultan was born in Germany in 1831, son of Killian and Maria Sultan. He is the 2nd son, with an older brother Valentine. The family came from Germany in about 1840 and settled in NYC. Valentine moved to Baltimore as did Henry. Valentine was a liquor sales man and Henry owned a bar named the Stag Head. Is it possible that there are 2 Henry Sultans?
