Greetings! Captain Elisha Smart and Olive Horton Smart were my great-great grandparents. I am interested (among other things) in developing genealogies on all of their children. If you are still interested in learning more about Olive and in sharing information, feel free to contact me. By the way, the 150th anniversary of Elisha Smart's death in combat at the Battle of Fair Oaks (Seven Pines), Virginia, during the American Civil War, is just a few days away on May 31, 2012. I will be toasting his memory! Regards, Cliff Dodge P.S. Annie Smart Dodge was my great-grandmother (looking at your listed photographs).

Just for the record;

I realize this is far "after the fact", but there were a couple Grover Cleveland Smarts.
Grover Cleveland became a popular name, because of President Grover Cleveland (and many of the Smarts were Democrats during this time)

The Grover Cleveland Smart that Phil, Patricia, Bill, and myself are related to: was the son of "Josie Smart".

Mary Josephine "Josie" Smart Tesseneer, was the daughter of William Gettys Smart (and thus also the grand daughter of Joseph "Hiram" Smart).
"Garney" is buried at Union Baptist Church in Polkville, NC.
Here is "our" Grover Cleveland Smart (died 1938):
Link: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=83...

As mentioned, other Grover Cleveland Smarts were around

There is a Grover Cleveland Smart (d. 1943) buried in VA.
Link: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Sm...;

There is a Grover Cleveland Smart (d. 1944) buried in KY
Link: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Sm...;

Corn-fusing at times, eh?

Any questions, I will try and help.
And Phil.... another point of interest is....

William Gettys Smart, his brother Philo Whitefield Smart, and Emma's husband - was all enlisted in Co. A, 49 NC Infantry , CSA

So we have 3 links to the Civil war - and maybe even more in that same family line. I plan to check the rest of the names once I get back to the Old Tryon Genealogy Society.

Philo was killed in the war, but William Gettys Smart named a son after his brother that had died. Thus you will run into two Philo Whitefield Smarts while doing research.

Troy

Phil, in response to your comment "The birth dates of some of the last three must be wrong unless they were triplets."

You are correct in assuming the dates are wrong.
I am a descendant of Hiram Smart's son William G.

I have always heard from my father that his Smart ancestors were part of the McKenzie clan but cannot help with information about Scottish Smarts between 1066 and 1775 and would like to learn more, myself. I am descended from an Alexander Smart born 1755 in Edzell (near Brechin), Angus, Scotland who married Agnes Gold. The city of Dundee in Angus, referenced in family written communications, is just across the Firth of Tay from Fife, so the McKenzie Smarts must have continued northward.

Smart

I am currently researching the Smart sep of the Mckenzie clan.

All Smarts are born in the county of Fife, Scotand

b. abt. 1772/1775 William/Margaret (Dingwall) Smart
b. 29/Jul/1798 John/Barbara Lyon (Hood) Smart
b. abt. 1840 John/Isabella (Reekie)Smart
b. 07/Aug/1870 David/Margaret (Smart) Smart
b. 07/July/1890 Donald Grant/Lillian (Andrews) Smart

I have some pictures of the houses that were lived in and of the people as well.

The earliest Smart recorded was in 1066 (in Southfolk England) during the collection of taxation data, for the king (a.k.a. doomsday book). My understanding is that the Smarts travelled along the east coast up into Scotland. As I have hit the wall going backwards my next objective is to go from 1066 up to 1772/75. Looking forward to any information, that anyone has. If you believe that you linage is the same as mine, I may have some information to assist in you search.

This is my step Father-in-laws line. I have some data combed from ancestry and from Familysearch.org. I also have some research that my step-father-in-law's dad did.
My oldest relative in that line is John Smart b. 1791 in St. Wenn, Cornwall England. I found 2 sons, Henry b. 1824 and John b. 1829, and a daughter named Genefer b. 1833. I got this from 1851 England Census. If I remember there were several John Smarts, but this was the best fit.
His son, John, was your great grandparent. My step FIL came from his son John b. 1867 d. 1918, an older brother of Clara. I have Clara born abt 1879 in Iowa, but hadn't really looked into her yet.
Here is a list of all the siblings of Clara i have:
Mary Jane b. 1858 in Bodmin, Cornwall, England
Jessie b. 1863 same place
John b. 1867 same place
Felix b. 1870 in England
Albert b. 1873 in Iowa
Elizabeth b. 1875 in Iowa
Susan b. 1877 in Iowa

Let me know if this matches what you have or not. Let me know if you need anymore specifics. I don't have many death dates, but haven't spent as much time on this line as I do on my own. I'm always glad to share info.

Hello Sally

Have you checked out Chris Mahoney's website? http://www.chrismahoney.co.nz/ If you click on "Records", it lists births, marriages and deaths for all Smarts in New Zealand from 1840 to 1990. Herbert Cecil died in Auckland in 1969, aged 77. Ian Russell was born in 1927 in Auckland.

The following is from an online search of http://www.manukau.govt.nz/en/CouncilServices/ManukauMemoria...

Herbert Cecil Smart
Date of Death: Saturday, February 15, 1969
Block: Old Papatoetoe Cemetery, Body / Ashes Lot:ANGLI-PLOT-963Date
Buried: Tuesday, February 18, 1969

Can't find any further mention of Ian Russell on Chris's website after the mention of his birth - no marriages or death notices - he could still be alive or maybe he left the country?

Kind regards, Linda
P.S. I have no Smarts in my family line but did some research for a friend for any mention of his Scottish Smart family.
Are you just interested in the immediate family? I cannot help you with the mystery of the children but go to familysearch.org and look at the Illinois deaths. There is an extraction for the death of a John Smart who may be your guy. He died 27 April 1918 in LaGrange IL. He was born in England on 21 Dec 1867 and his parents are John Smart and Elizabeth Chapman. I believe this is the same person as in the 1910 census of Lyons, IL. I would definatly order the film from your FHC from which this extract is based. Or order the death record from Cook Co. IL.

Also on familysearch.org is an extract of Florence's birth record in 1896 and an unnamed child of John and Daisy in 1896 There is Arly in 1897 These says that Daisy's last name is Young.

I cannot answer your mystery of the wherabouts of Thomas and Harry in 1910 except to say the enumerator may have forgotten to include them or perhaps they were adopted after 1910. The social security death index says that Harry died in 1969 in Cook co. Ill. Perhaps you could send for his death certificate or his social security application to find out for sure if he is the son of John and Daisy

I am not related to this family and only took up your challenge so I have no further information.

Leslie

The problem is Thomas was born 1902 and Harry in 1904. They are listed as sons. I can't find either Thomas or Harry in the 1910 census.

Does anyone know anymore about this family.

I am looking for parents of Eileen Mary Smart, born about 1905 died 1943 Melbourne, Victoria, according to her death her father was John Smart and mother Elsie Unknown. I can not find either a John or Elsie on the Victorian Electoral Roll. I have been led to believe that Eileen was born in Victoria, Aust but I can't find her birth or parents marriage on the Victorian indexes. Eileen married Dennis Ford in 1932 in Victoria, Aust
Both Dennis and Eileen first appear on the Electoral Roll in 1931 Eileen at 535 King St, and Dennis Ford at King St, no number, which either makes them born before 1911 but not in Victoria. Apparently, I am not the only one, judging by the fact that I have yet to find any solid documentation confirming a connection between Francis Smart and my John Smart of Howland, ME (1819-1900). I will let you know if I solve the riddle. It looks like the Smarts moved slowly North from Exeter to Kittery to Brunswick, Waldo, Bangor and then the Howland,Maxfield, Sebois areas.
Fascinating to read so much history about these towns and the Smarts. Frustrating that I can't nail down the link. Maybe my John Smart isn't related to the rest but came down from Canada as a relatively recent immigrant. Oh well it keeps my old brain firing.
Bill

Great info, sure wish they had followed more of the childrens line's. All I can find is my John Smart married Betsy Hilton around 1760 in Rockingham County. Betsy was d/o Edward & Elizabeth Hilton. The land records show when they were given land, bought land and the probate for John who died abt July 1773 and know they had at least 2 son's, Hilton(d/1796 at sea) & John both who have property. If it wasn't for land deeds I wouldn't know anything except for the 1806, 7 & 8 tax records when show John(s/o John & Betsy)when he sold his land and moved to Maine.

Nothing like directing you to the tree you posted - LOL!

The other issue I see with Francis is the posted marriage to Sarah Deering. His will is on Ancestry.com and it says he gave his whole estate to his wife Mary. After her death, it passes to "his beloved kindred William Barter, Sarah Grindal, and Elizabeth and Martha Jones." This suggests he and Mary did not have any children.

A second source that verifies this is the "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire", which lists Francis Smart, husbandman of Kittery, married to Mary Crockett: http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=gendime&ra.... Under "Crockett", we see Ephraim and wife Ann of Kittery and a listing for a daughter Ann who married Francis Smart. This source also mentions his will and no children are listed. Looking further, it appears the three "kindred" women in the will all had the Barter maiden name, so you may want to look for links there to either his or Mary Crockett's family.

That same dictionary shows a number of Sarah Deerings, one of whom was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Deering, and was married by 1727 to Francis Deed of Kittery, a mariner. They had a child Elizabeth. This could be where your error is on her.

Thanks for this information and the reference to the Leslie book. The tree you cited is mine but most of the info, prior to John Smart (1819-1900) is from other trees that seem reliable. I am trying to clear up loose ends and you message is very helpful.
Bill
