SMEDLEY DNA

I was wondering if anybody here was a direct descendent of Baptiste SMEDLEY or his brother John who were born in the Sawley/Wilne area of Derbyshire in the early 1600's. They emigrated to the English colony of Massachusetts in the 1630's I understand.

My GGrandfather John Thomas SMEDLEY was born in Sawley in 1866 and I can track his direct lineage in Sawley back to the mid 1750's.

There it gets a bit messy but there are Smedley's in Sawley from 1656 when the earliest extant Parish Register commences. The volume(s) from 1538 have been lost in the mists of time.

I was wondering if any such Smedley descendants have had their DNA profiled for genealogical purposes? I am contemplating undertaking the process and it would be more meaningful if I was able to compare my results with known descendents of a Smedley from Sawley in the 1600's.

I am the direct blood descendant of Rev. Joseph B. Smedley and Mary Ann Ratcliff. They are my g-g-g-g grandparents on my Maternal side, my mother is a Smedley. I have confirmed Mary Ann's parents names are John and Mary, we located and I uploaded a copy of Mary Ann's Baptism in England.

My question is are you still actively working on the tree and if so, have you confirmed the birthplace and parents of Joseph?

SMEDLEY, William M. 77, left this life, Thursday afternoon, December 22, 2011.

He was born in Springfield, Ohio on May 30, 1934 the son of Joseph and Dorothy (Goings) Smedley.

Bill worked as a supervisor for Van Dyne Crotty for 25 years.
He was strongly involved with the National Guard, softball, and as a deacon at Central Christian Church.

Bill leaves behind his wife, Jonnie (Campbell) Smedley; children, Jackie Venrick of Springfield, Ohio, Tonya Fent (Mike Riley) of Marysville, Ohio and William (Linda) Smedley Jr. of Florida; step-children, Marva (Ted) Screws of Georgia, Julia (Jim) Valentine of Springfield, OH, Connie Wethington of Dayton, Ohio and Kelly (Joe) Ruckman of Springfield; thirteen grandchildren; and seventeen great grandchildren.
Also surviving is a brother, Jerry (Sue) Smedley of Springfield; sister, Judy (Roy) Malin of Springfield; sister-in-law, Norma Jean Hanson; his former spouse, Nadean Frock; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Joey; a
brother, Jack; and a sister, Patty Sauvageot.

The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Springfield Regional Medical Center for their care and compassion.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME.
Bill's funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday in Central Christian Church with Pastor Warren Banks officiating.
Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

I am the GG Grandson of Mary Lucinda Smedley and Daniel Fetters Robertson, and I need to find more information on them. I have found photos of some of our ancestors but none of them yet. My Grandfather was "Daniel Fetters Robertson", after his Grandfather. It would mean a lot to me to have photos of them.

Hi, I am the gg Grandson of Mary Lucinda Smedley Robertson, and am have been searching for more information about her. I know her parents were, Henry Alanzo Smedley and Elizabeth Lucinda Sherwood, but that's all I know about her. Her husband of course was, Daniel Fetters Robertson. Their son, David Samuel Robertson and May Fleta Davis Robertson lived here in Seminole County, OK. He died November 11, 1929, being shot by outlaws. He was a Constable in the 20's. May Fleta was from Nauvoo, Walker County, AL, but he was born in Missouri. I found one clue that stated, William Davis had applied to the Eastern Cherokee roll.

Do you know if there is Indian blood in the family??

I am VERY interested in pictures. We, our family, have NO pictures of this part of our ancestry.

I would be so grateful for any information, and would cherish any photos!!!

The grave of Mary Ann Ratcliff Smedley is still "lost" to the best of our knowledge as of this writing. August 11, 2011. I contacted a historian and contact with 'findagrave' in Oklahoma. He was unable to find any record. We think it may have been covered with water when the Kerr Reservoir was created. The posting in March,2010, regarding Mary Ann's grave being in Tamaha Cemetery was incorrect.

I just saw your posting of March, 2011. Mary Ratcliff Smedley is not listed in the burials at Tamaha Cemetery. If you have info otherwise, please let us know. It is important. Our info says her gravesite has been lost, probably under the waters of the Kerr Reservoir. I have lots of material about our mutual ancestor, Joseph Smedley and his descendants. I'll be very happy to share our information with you. Please keep in touch.

Does anyone have any information concerning John Smedley born July 4,1863 I believe in Greene Co. Indiana. He was a farmer and married Hester Walters. He died in 1942. I'm guessing that he had several sisters older than himself and that his father died the year he was born. That he went to live with his mothers family and then on a farm to work. Now, this is all guesswork according to what I've seen. The funeral home listed his parents as unknown.

My Mother has very little information regarding her father and I am trying to track down information based upon some of the very little information my Grandma has provided.

Leonard Carlton Smedley was born in 1928 (est.)I believe his mothers maiden name is Higgins and he lived in Tucson Az.Until his death around 1952. He was in the military and my mother was told that he died in a plane crash. It is believed that he had a wife and other children at the time of my mothers birth in 1952. I know this is very little information but any help is greatly appreaciated

I have several books that belong with the Smedley family, I worked in a thrift store about 10 years ago and came across 2 books and a booklet that was written by different people in the smedley family. The first one was written during the civil war (I believe, but not positive). It is handwritten by either a Robert or George Smedley that was a doctor. The info is at home or else I would know which one wrote it. It is a book of poems, thoughts etc... with excellent handwriting. I have not read but a couple of pages because I am afraid to tear it up.

The second is a printed book "Across the plains in 62", a dairy of travel from kansas to oregon in 1862.

The third is a booklet with the geneology of the Smedley family starting in 1670 (approx), until around 1970's. It covers quite alot of Family Information you might like.

Alberta S. (Smedley) Sassen 93, of Springfield, Ohio died at 6 a.m. on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at the Gables at Green Pastures in Marysville, Ohio.

She was born September 9, 1917 in Springfield, Ohio (Clark County) the daughter of Robert M. and Elizabeth (Lamontagne) Smedley.

She had worked as a teacher and bus driver for Town & Country Schools for 21 years.

Survivors include 2 daughters and spouses, Marlene (Jim) Dolwick, Arizona and Charlotte (Fred) Keplinger, Florida; 14 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and numerous, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 1972, a son, Daniel, daughter, Teresa, granddaughter, Marcia, 3 sisters and 2 brothers. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday in CONROY FUNERAL HOME.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday in St. Raphael Catholic Church.
Burial will follow in St. Bernard Cemetery.

The Tomas Chatteton you have is not the some Thomas C.Mary Ann Swaine had a brother named Eward his wife died after your thomas was born then just befor he died .He ask Thomas Chatterton &his sister Mary Ann Swaine to raise his young son how was also named Thomas.if you will go to werelate website you will find there was more then one Thomas !!!

You have the wrong Thomas Chatterton.
My Thomas Chatterton was born June 9, 1811 in Glossopdale, Derbyshire, UK. He was the son of Edward Chatterton and Martha Wild.
I am looking for information of where and when he married Hannah Smedley.

Hi Frosty - How good to hear from you. Robin is my father-in-law and he just turned 79 last week. He will be so happy to learn that I received a post from you. His mother did not die from Huntington's.His branch of the family was spared of the Huntington's. She had some sort of kidney problem. I am married to his oldest son - Michael and we live in Fresno CA. Most of what we know about the Smedley's has come from Harvey Joe Wilson in OK and Zeda Steele in Arizona. I would love to learn anything you have. Maybe this weekend I can put together some more specific questions. You mention Native American ancestry in your profile. Is this from the Smedleys? My father-in-law talks about being part Cherokee. I look forward to hearing from you.

Angela: Alma Leona was my 2nd cousin. Did she also die of Huntington's? What do you know of Robin Humphrey? Is that your father-in-law? I have not been able to get any more info on the Humphreys in OK, but I have a lot on Smedleys.
Most of them are buried at the Cummings Cem, Maud, Pottawatomie, OK, if you didn't already have that info.

I do not know witch Thomas Chatterton I are talking about but I have aThomas Chatterton in my family tree.He was Born about 1740 or so in Leicestershire.He married Mary Ann Swaine5,26,1766 in St Mary's Church in Rye,East Sussex,England.so if I were you ,you mat want to check your dates! I noticed your post about the Smedleys born Shottle. I have just received a copy of Jane Bullock nee Smedley's will and she is my 5x great grandmother. After leaving sums of money to her three children with Thomas Bullock, she leaves the residue of her estate to her son Samuel Smedley. According to her burial age, Jane was born around 1730 and I'm wondering if the Samuel mentioned in your post could be her son?

I was delighted to hear from you. Yes, I would love to share with you. I will be out of town for a few days but when I get home I will gather my info and thoughts and either send it to you by e-mail or snail mail. The unknown woman may be someone I can identify by pictures with names. Briefly, Elizabeth Smedley married to Robert Waters. Had a daughter she named Emma(my grandmother). Emma had 5 girls (one was my mother) and 4 boys. None living.

Also, I have a silly story about Robert and some of his nephews if you are interested. It was in a relative's memoirs.
My husband is a descendant of Elizabeth's sister, Emma. Emma is his great great grandmother. I also have an unknown Smedley photo of an older woman taken in Kankakee. Do you think you might know of anyone that might be able to identify the woman?

I think we have a connection here. The youngest daughter of George Sr. was my great grandmother Elizabeth b. 25 Dec 1850. Sister to George, Jr.,Emma,Henry, William and John. George,Jr. married to Mary E.Rose in Grundy County, Illinois. Elizabeth first married Hugh Berry and he died, no issue. She then married Robert Waters, 2 Dec 1872 in Grundy County, Illinois. I find these two families were in the same area several times. My mother was close to Corrine b. 1897. I do have more information. Let me know if you are interested. Gloria

Searching for information on the parents of Rev. David Bishop Smedley Born 1801 in Virginia?? Moved to Alabama, Dallas and Autauga counties, married a Mitchell??? about 1823 and died between 1834 and 1836. They had three children George William 1825, James Jeffries 1830, and Sophia B. 1834. David B. Smedley was a Methodist minister?? He remarried to Maria Stoudenmire Campbell 12 Oct 1836 and Lived in Autauga County before moving to Ramer Alabama about 1860 where he died on 28 March 1875. He and Maria had 3 other children Randolph C. born 1838 , Capel S. in 1845, and C. I. in 1848

Rev. Joseph B. Smedley was my g-g-grandfather; his son, Benjamin Bucknell Smedley was my g-grandfather; his son, Joseph William Smedley, was my grandfather; Fred Edwin Smedley (b.1911-d.1996) was my father. My dad was a nephew of your descendant, Frederick E. Smedley, father of Mildred. I have no other information on Mildred or her children. I do have an article she wrote about our mutual grandparent, Rev. Joseph B. Smedley several years ago. I will be happy to share a "Descendants List" with you dating from Rev. Joseph B. Smedley and Mary Ann Ratcliff.

Mary Ann died in 1836 (age 37) and was buried in the Indian Territory (now OK) in Pheasant Bluff, and later is said to have been buried in Tamaha (or vice versa) There was a rampant cholera epidemic at the time. Her actual gravesite has been lost. Joseph and Benjamin at buried in Shiloh Cemetery near Hartford, AR.

My children are descendants, the grandchildren of Frederick( son of Benjamin, son of Joseph) Smedley's youngest child Mildred who married Dominick Basolo in 1932.

To be honest, I don't know that much about him other than what my mum has told me. She said that my grandad Donald served with the Sherwood Foresters in ww2 so she thinks Harold may also have served with them in ww1. I have had a look through the military stuff on here but drawn a blank, not sure if you will have more luck.

What I do know is that he married Francis Ellen Fletcher on 21st December 1918 and that his occupation was listed as soldier on the marriage certificate. He died in 1972. His brother Fred was a sailor, so possibly in the navy during ww1. Apparently, Fred used to bring animals home with him from his travels including a parrot.... which wrecked the house!
