Re: Richard SMITHER....b.1793 England, Middlesex, mar Joanna

Hi Bill,

I assume that Richard Smither was the son of William Smither and Mary Ann Loton who married at Sunbury on Thames in 1793. I’ve not found any record of Richard’s marriage to Joanna, but am pretty sure that it wasn’t in Sussex, which would rule out Joanna’s home town of Hastings.

The Information I have on Richard and Joanna’s children is as follows:

Richard SMITHER 1816-1882.
As far as I know Richard married Eliza CATES in 1845 at Shoreditch. Eliza was born circa 1822 at Ewell, Surrey and died in 1871 at Hastings, Richard died in 1882 at Bethnal Green. Richard and Eliza don’t appear to have had any children.

Mary SMITHER 1818-?
I don’t have any info regarding Mary except her entry on the 1841 Census.

George William SMITHER 1818-1850.
George William married in 1842 at Shoreditch. At this point in time I’m not certain as to his wife’s name but she should be shown as a widow on the 1851 Census as George died in 1850 at Bethnal Green.

John Ephraim SMITHER 1822-1896
John married Ann Augusta NORMAN in 1845 at Bethnal Green. John and Ann had four children that survived infancy:

John Richard was born in 1846 and married Bella Skull in 1872. John died at Whitechapel in 1891, Bella, the same year at St. Pancas.

Ann Maria, born 1850, Bethnal Green, no further info.

Emma, born 1851, Bethnal Green, married 1872, Bethnal Green.

Caroline, born 1853, married Samuel Edward MILLMAN, 1871, Bethnal Green, one daughter, Caroline MILLMAN born circa 1872.

William Henry Smither 1825-1891
William married Ann Wootton BRIXEY in 1854 at Bethnal Green, Ann died in 1876 and William in 1891, both at Lewisham. Again they don’t appear to have had any children.

Martha Maria 1830-1868
Martha Maria married Stephen Smither in 1846 (a Gunsmith? and second?? Cousin). You mention the married names of three of the daughters; I think the other two were as follows:

Martha Elizabeth married George James KNIGHT, December 1871, Poplar, died September 1875, Poplar.

Alice Emma married John James FOREMAN June 1881, Poplar.

I hope the above is of some use, let me know if I can be of any more help.

Best Wishes,

Michael J. Smither,

Vienne, France
UCL Surname Profiler

As reported in much of the UK press, University College London (UCL)has just launced it's Surname Profiler website. Whilst some of the mapping appears to be questionable (loads of Scottish Smither(s)? there is much of interest. One of the more interesting sections is the "% of people with a more high-status name", which will appeal to snob genealogists everywhere!. Windsor will give you 34%, Churchill, 19% but if your name is Smithers the figure drops to 5% and for Smither, 1%.

http://www.spatial-literacy.org/index.php?p=familyname
http://www.spatial-literacy.org/UCLnames/

Michael J.
Marriage Index

There were over 2000 marriages registered as Smither, Smithers or Smythers in England and Wales between 1837 and 1911, I am trying to find the name of the spouse for each and every one of them (without ordering the certificates!)

With the FreeBMD marriage Index now virtually complete for this period it is normally possible to cross-check any entry with the subsequent census and identify the correct spouse; post 1901 marriages are difficult as the 1911 Census is not yet available and any marriage prior to 1852 yields four potential spouses as each page contains four marriages as opposed to the two thereafter.

What follows is a list of the Grooms for which the above method has not worked, I would be very grateful to hear from anyone who could identify any of the missing spouses.

If you have a query about any marriage not on the list please get in touch as I may have some information that may be of use. I hope to post a similar list for Brides shortly.

Best Wishes,

Michael J.
Hello Judy

I am related to John Wesley Smither Sr. through James Thomas
Smither. Thank you for the information on Alvin Eugene and his family. I am
trying to find John Sr.'s father and mother. For some time we have
tried to link him with Charles Greenway Smither, but the dates do not
work. I have tried to get his death certificate but it seems the county
did not keep them that early. Looked for his gravesite in Caddo Mills,
(online) but could not find it in any of the Hunt Co. cemeteries. Also
thought I might find his marrage record but have had problems with
Newsome Springs AL. Since I am in CA hard to get to those areas and check
in person.

I have been looking at census records for TN around his birth date of
1839. Having trouble there also. If you have any information or
suggestions would greatly appreciate them.

Thank you
Linda Haines
I have not made any headway with John Wesley Smither Sr.
So is he related to Charles Greenway Smither or that branch at all? What data do you have that shows the death of Charles in 1834? I tried to track Martha Ann Brown Smither after 1834 but could not find her untill she marries again. I did find Ann Eliza living with her grandparents in TX.

Nice to see you on line.

I found in the 1850 Walker Co TX census Ann Eliza (18) b. TN
along with Joseph (17) TN. They were listed under John and Polly Smither. Joseph is the last son of John and Polly (Greenway). I believe that Ann Eliza is the daughter of Charles Greenway Smither and Martha Brown.
Does anyone have information on this?
