I am looking for some information on a Sarah Smyth who would have been borne about 1888 in Ireland. She would have arrived on the St. Paul on Oct 15, 1916. It looks like she was going to Tisdale, SK. I believe she is a cousin or sibling of my great grandfather Rev. Robert James 'Jimmy' Smith.

Can anyone relate to my father's side of the Smyth family from Newtownards, County Down, Northern Ireland?

Below is what I know:

The numbers in square brackets are the ages they were on the Census mentioned.

My father David Smyth was born on 8th August 1907 and was three years old on the Census of 2nd April 1911.

Siblings already born at the time of that Census were William John Smyth [19], Maria Smyth [16], Agnes Smyth [14], Robert James Smyth [11], Charles Smyth [9], Francis Smyth [6].

Their address was 137 Mill Street, Newtownards.

Head of the family - James Smyth [38] (my dad's father) - born Newtownards, County Down in 1872/73.

Wife (my dad's mother) - Eliza Jane Smyth (nee Whiteside) [37] born Aldershot 1873/74.

The widowed father of my grandfather James Smyth was living with them. William John Smyth [68] born in Herdstown, Donaghadee, County Down in 1842/43.

The widowed mother of my grandmother Eliza was also living with them. Maria Whiteside [74], born in Ballyskeagh, County Down in 1836/37.

My father David Smyth married my mother Mary Holtom in Manchester, England on 10th August 1940 at St Agnes Church, Longsight. They had three children : William James (Bill) 1941, Maureen 1942 and myself 1946. Unfortunately my father died on 19th February 1951 when I had just turned five.

My sister recalls he had relatives in Manchester and/or Cheshire, possibly Macclesfield. Could have been a sibling with children.

That is all I know. I hope this helps someone else who may be researching the same family and might also be able to give me more information.

I am attaching a photo of my father David Smyth holding my brother Bill when he was a baby. This is the only photo I have of my dad.

Barbie

it is interesting that your grandfather worked at Argrey. How did you find out? it is also interesting that he left in 1910 probably for a better life. I wonder if it was about this time Argrey started to deline. The Smyths were a large family and all the boys except for my grandfather emigrated to the 4 corners of the world. there were not many of them shown on the 1911 cenus. My great-aunt Mary married Andrew Lowry and lived in Argrey. My great-aunt kathleen married Willie John Alexander and lived at Dromore and my grandfather inherited his uncle's farm near Strabane and it then appers that the Smyth holdings at Argrey fell into disuse. (My grandfather father William Smyth died in Argrey in 1914)I can only assume they were sold although my father never spoke of it and i don't think he really knew. The fact that your grandfather worked and may have lived there makes me think, even more, that it was a thriving little community at one time. I know it is a lot earlier and your Grandfather is not listed on it but have you had a lokk at Griffiths valuation just to see who was living there at that time.
Interestingly your family went to Scotland and part of mine came from Scotland (Neilston) in 1842.
Regards
Liz

Argrey is in the townland of Mullaghaney, which is in the parish of Clonleigh, Baroney of Strabane and poor law union of Strabane. A bit of a mouthful. You are right about it being near the border. It is not on the border though. It used to take us a qhilw to get there but maybe it was because I was only little and my father did not drive very fast. We had to take little single lane roads and eventually an untarmaced lane with grass growing up it to get to Argrey. It is nearly 50 years ago since I was last there so maybe that lane is now tarmaced. I can also remember they had no electricity but got it much later. I may have a bit of a romantic memory about the place but will try and find out exactly where it is for you. Was your grandfather listed as living at Argrey at one time? How did you manage to find out? I also think that none of the people living around Argrey were rich. Apart from my grandfather all of his family emigrated to the four corners of the world.
Regards
Liz

Thank you for your reply. My Charles Hunter was born 1896, his parents were James Hunter and Catherine Sweeney and they lived in Race End a few miles ourside Letterkenny. It dosen't appear that there is any connection between our Hunters. His siblings with the exception of Mary(Maise) and Rose, emigrated to Philadelphia in 1920s. Maise married William Herman Hamilton of Glasgow and they went to live in London East End where there are still some family descendaint. Regards Edward Rowland

A Charles Hunter who was my grandfather lived in the Argrey area as a farm worker until 1910 and probably worked for the Smyth family. He married Mary in May 1910 and moved to Scotland shortly afterwards, they were RC. They had a child, Sarah,in early 1911, followed by a Son, Charles, and 5 other daughters including my Mother, Veronica.
Samuel and Sarah were his parents and they came from Castlefin in Donegal. I can send you copies of the marriage details and his birth details if you like.

Thank you for your reply/ Where in Donegal is Argrey. I suspect that it is near to the border with Tyrone. My Hunters were poor. Charle' grandfather was Alexander Hunter and was described on the death certificate in 1872 as a pensioner so I am pretty certain that he had been in the British Army. I also suspect that he was protestant although his son James and Grandson the foremenmtioned Charles was RC. Regds Edward Rowland

Smyth/Smith from Ballycastle, Ireland

I have two queries regarding the Smyth name.

I am trying to trace my grandmother's birth certificate, Mary Elizabeth Smyth/Smith, from Ballycastle, born 1883.

I am hoping to establish her mother Elizabeth's maiden name. Mary E emigrated to America in 1903 where she married Samuel Diamond also from Ballycastle.

Mary E had two sisters that I know of but again I can't find their birth certificates, 1: Jane born 1877 who went to America but returned and married Bob Leinster from Belfast. 2: Ellen who married a Wisseman in the states and remained.

The second query is concerning William Smyth who I believe to be Mary E brother. He was married and living at 20 Church Street, Port Glasgow. He returned to Ballymoney Ireland and enlisted into the Royal Irish Rifles in 1914. He was captured and enprisoned in March 1918 and died in a German prisoner of war camp in July 1918.

I want to establish if William and Mary are brother and sister and secondly who was his wife and did they have children. His wife was still living at 20 Church Street Port Glasgow in 1919.

Any help would be appreciated.
He married a Mary Scott and lived at a house called Stone Park. One of his children was Dr William Smyth who is well documented. I am looking for information about other children he may have had and details of his parents. Many thanks

I have not come across Charles Hunter but he could have worked at Argrey as at one time it was quite a thriving community. All gone now which is very sad. I am related to both the Smyth and Lowry families who lived there but my grandfather left there in the first part of the 20th centuary as he inherited a farm near Strabane. The rest of his family emigrated to the four corners of the earth and the farm at Argrey just fell into ruins. I never visited there and now I wish I had but often visited the Lowry house at Argrey. It is gone now as well. When I got your query I found I had a query sent last year from some one else asking about Charles Hunter who worked at Argrey. maybe you could help each other. Good luck with your research.

very sorry for not repling sooner but i have only come across your message. I am not aware of your grandfather's name but he could have worked at Argrey. Argrey seemed to be quite a large community at that time with everyone being related to everyone else. i am related to both the Smyth and Lowry families. the Smyth family appear to have left Argrey sometime between 1910 and the 1920's as my grandfather inherited a farm near strabane and the rest of family went off to all the corners of the world. (like many irish families). the farm at Argrey went to rack and ruin but I do remember visiting the Lowry family at Argrey up to the time the last member of that family living there died. it was a wonderful place, lost in time. Sadly it also is gone. i have also receved another query today about Charles Hunter from someone called Rowland. maybe you could help each other. good luck with your research and apologies once again.

Looking for information on my elusive gggfather Charles, recorded on his sons Frederick's wedding certificates as an Artist / Picture Dealer. I believe he was living in Dublin around 1880, Frederick was born in 1862 and emigrated to England in 1881, I have all the information I require regarding him from that date onward. What I am missing is anything of his life in Ireland, siblings, mothers name, place of birth etc and anything regarding Charles.
There is a family connection to John DILLON MP member for East Mayo for many years, Frederick was his nephew, but quite how is not clear!
I do not know; the area of Dublin they lived in; Frederick's mother/ Charles wife's name, any siblings of either Frederick or Charles. I do know that Frederick was not Catholic. I am not looking for any information regarding Frederick post 1881. No known links outside Ireland apart from Liverpool.
Long shot, I know but I will crack it one day.
I was contacted in 2003 by Brian Dillon-Smyth with an offer of help, but I have lost contact with him and all subsequent attempts to re establish contact have failed.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I would like to find out what happened to this relative. Charles L. Smythe was the editor of the Cheboygan MI newspaper. The last I find him is in the 1920 census there. He lived with his sister, Cecelia at that time. His father was William E Smyth(e) and mother was named Cecelia as well. If anyone has info it would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

I am a Smyth decendent, David Radford was born in Washington County Virginia, his parents were Elizabeth (Betsy) Edmiston & Jonathan Smyth. Elizabeth was the daughter of Col. William Edmiston & Elizabeth Kennedy. Jonathan was the son of David Smyth & Sarah Stuart, all of Washington County Virginia. After Jonathan's death Betsy moved to Lincoln County Tn, she had 2 other children, Eliza Campbell who married a Gilliland, & Sarah Marian who married a Rosebrough. David Radford who married Jane Caroline Greer around 1840 had 10 children I believe. My grandfather was the youngest, Braxton Bragg Smythe. Please contact me I will fill in more. David Radford Smyth died in 1865 & is buried in the McEwen Cemetery in Petersburg Tn, so is his wife Jane Caroline & several of their children that died young. The other children who died as adults are buried in Old Orchard in Petersburg Tn.
Jane Caroline Smythe Parks
