Last night I was able to verify that the enlistment of John, Gabriel & Stephen Smithers was in Fincastle in the Continental Line. It was in the Annals of Southwest VA 1769-1800.
According to my records Sally Smithers is listed as Head of Household in Rockbridge Co. in 1810. So I believe she moved to Wythe Co. after that. We know she came to Wythe Co. because her children got married in Wythe Co.

Thank you for your response about Bluford and Keziah Smithers in Franklin. That makes sense.

I am interested in your evidence of Stephen, John & Rubin's enlisting for the Rev War in Fincastle. That would make sense. What book did you find it in? i have never been able to locate it. That's very exciting. What year did they enlist? Makes it sound like they are brothers?
Also exciting about the tax record in 1781. What info was there in the record besides his name?

You hit the nail on the head! There doesn't seem to be any proof that Sir William was the father of Stephen. Stephen appears in the Rev War out of Augusta Co.VA-a very large County at that time. Wound up in Rockbridge Co. after the War. Died there and his family moved to Wythe County about 1805. I have no picture of Anderson. Would love to have one. There must be someone out there who does.
If anyone has proof of either Sir William or Robert, his brother, please share it. So many branches of the family tell this story there's got to be some truth to it. My family told this story with no proof. Good luck!

Sir William or Stephen William Smithers

Anybody still out there? I am attempting to reconcile my Smythers family tree (my maiden name).
1. I am the dau of David Lee Smythers (living and taking a DNA test as soon as I can manage it.
2. Son of Vinton Smythers and Oza Rae Gravley
3. Son of Michael Sidney Smythers and Cora Melton
4. Son of Stephen Robert Smythers and Francis Bowers
5. Son of Rev. Michael Smythers and Elizabeth Austin
6. Son of Stephen Smythers Jr. and Nancy Pickett and here is where it starts getting logic issues. This Stephen is in a cemetery close to my relatives (Hillsville, Carroll, VA) and I have a picture of their tombstone. He clearly lived from 1797-1864 and spelled the name as Smithers on the stone and yet is often given credit for being the Revolutionary War Veteran. Since this war was fought 1775-1783, he was not yet born.
7.	Rumored son of a Sir. William Smythers who arrived with his brother Robert BUT (1) No explanation ever found where the Sir is explained. It seems to be an assumption made by someone back in time and everyone just went along with it. I suspect that the Sir was originally misinterpreted abbreviation for Stephen. We now have access to the complete government Revolutionary War files on Footnote.com on what appears to be a Stephen and a William Smithers or a Stephen William Smythers. (2) Name not found in listing of knights since 1299. Has anyone ever found any backup to this theory of the existence of a Sir William or even Stephen Sr.? (2) listing of children's birthdates exceed credibility even by our fertile standards. (3) Anyone ever found the boat? Perhaps this data is hiding in private trees. Does anyone have these issue logically sorted out?
Thank you for your prompt response. It fills in gaps for me. I have a couple of questions. There is a wide discrepancy between Robert and Keziah's ages. Robert would have been very old when his children were born which makes me think it might have been a second marriage. There is a Keziah in Franklin Co, VA census of 1850 & 1860 giving her birth date as 1776. She and her children are listed as mulattos. Some say that Indians are listed in census records as mulatto. I wonder if she had Indian blood. Yet Keziah is an English name. This story fascinates me.
Also Stephen, Sr. would be very young during the Rev War. Of course very young lads did join up. Some were drummers.
The other question I have concerns William's title. Everybody accepts that he was knighted. If so would there be a record of this in England? Could it have been an honorary title based on his being a prominent figure-maybe an esquire? I love the story.
Some say the Smithers were Welsh. Any thoughts on that?

I would really like to have a copy of the Smythers Family in the Rockbridge Co. Heritage book. Do you know how I could get it? My local library says they cannot get it. I would pay for any expense related to printing or mailing it. Write me glenbetts@roadrunner.com

I have the same info you have for Wm Smythers, Sir Wm, Robert, Etc. I am descended through CC Smythers & Sarah Landreth, brother of Anderson. I am curious about the brother, Robert. I can find no documentation that he even existed. Saforth Landreth says he married Keziah but gives no documentation. Are there any deeds, wills records anywhere that you have seen? I would appreciate any info on Robert and Keziah or Sir Wm. Glenbetts@roadrunner.com

marriage of John Grey Smythers to Doris Elizabeth Smith

I am searching for information about this couple. John Grey Smythers married Doris Elizabeth Smith around 1946 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. They had 2 children, twin boys who died at birth on 30 May 1947 and are buried in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Des Moines. The boys were named John Grey and Thomas Jay Smythers. Doris died in 1966 and is also buried in Chapel Hill. Nothing else is known about this family.

Smythers Descendants

I am a descendant of Anderson James (1841-1922) & Susan Davis Smythers(1842-1893)who lived in Carroll County. Their son Columbus H.Smythers(1869-1928) married Meecey America Burnop(1872-1920). Don't know if he was married before or not. Columbus and Meecey had 8 children. They moved from Carroll County VA to Rich Valley VA in about 1898. Their children names were: Flora Rosetta, Susan Annie, Betty Margaret, William Thompson, Richard Anderson, Mary Ann, James Henry, Earnest Preston. I descended from Flora Rosetta Smythers who married William Frances Call(1887-1967). To them was born Wilma Francis Call(1917-)and she married Rufus Edward Armstrong(1919-1976). I am the third child of Wilma and Rufus. Any information you can give would be appreciated. If you need more information from me please feel free to ask. Send any information you can to phaulsee@naxs.net .
Back to the Anderson James Smythers, he and Susan had about 7 children to my knowledge of what I have been able to find out about them.Their names are: Judy Nancy(1866- ?), Columbus Henry(1869-1928), Stephen Davis((1871-1886, James William (1874-?), Mary Adaline(1878-1893),Rosetta Bell(1880-1889), and Susan Elizabeth(1884-1941).
The Columbus Henry Smythers I descended from was the son of Anderson James. To my knowledge Columbus Henry(1869-1928) was only married one time to Meecey America Burnop(1872-1920). Both he and Meecey are buried at Ridgedale Cemetery in Rich Valley, Va. Could this Columbus Henry have been married to Blanch before marrying Meecey America Burnop? I've never heard any of my relatives mention this but he was three years older than Meecey. Do you know of or can you figure out any connection with this Henry Smythers or was there another Henry Smythers related to Anderson? If we are descended from the same Anderson James I would like more information about my ancestors. I do not know much about Anderson James and his parents but would like to learn more. Any information would be appreciated.

Holy Cow! Susan Davis was my GG-Aunt. (or something) I have been searching my Davis roots for a year now, which put me into Smythers Land. Would love to chat and swap info. I was in Carroll Co. this summer doing research. Did you know there is a write up on the Smythers in the Rockbridge Co, Va. Heritage book? I copied it and linked much of the info to our bunch. Hope to hear from you. JD
