I know this is an ancient thread. I found it while trying to see if someone had traced Sam Sneads ancestry. My grandfather was friends with Sam Snead. He grew up just down the road from him in Bath County, VA. The property from Sam Sneads family is part of what is now the Homestead in Bath County, VA.
My grandparents said there was some distant connection to the Sneads but didn't know what it was. I think I have now found it. I was hoping to find Sam Sneads tree posted publicly. If anyone knows more on this topic, Let me know!
Thanks,
Linda

I am most interested in the information on George Washington Snead's grave in AL. Where is it located and what are the dates on the tombstone? The George Washington Snead (1835-1919)with whom I am familiar is the son of Dianah Beasley Snead and the "Unknown" Snead. This George is buried at Antioch Baptist Church cemetery in Fayette Co, GA. He was married perhaps three times: Mary Ann Bowers, Harriett Bowers Pate, and Mrs Tennessee Reeves.

I'm very interested in information on James, "Wash", and their brother John. My website: www.twogreats.com has info on their civil war records (still building James profile).

The info on Tennessee Reeves is new (and welcome to me). Do you have sources or more info?

I'd love to get photos, letters, other info.
I am interested to know where your information about the burial site and wife for George Washington Snead comes from and where you think he is buried.

James E. Snead was married to Charity Turner and later to Harriett Keaton. He is buried in Bethel Church Cemetery, Centre, Cherokee County, Alabama. However, all information I have about his brother, George Washington Snead, indicates that he died July 29, 1919 in the Confederate Soldiers Home, Atlanta, Georgia and was buried at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Fayette County, Georgia. George was apparently married 3 times: (1)Mary Ann Bowers before Dec 1858, (2)Harriett Bowers on 08 Sep 1867, and (3)Tennessee Reeves on 23 Aug 1894.

So far I have not been able to locate the original Snead Bible I seek.

Re: Divinity (aka Vinity) Snead of Georgia/Alabama

Hi, I am Divinity's great, great, grand daughter. My name is Darlene Kunis. I have been tracing this line for years. I have came to the conclusion that she was never married ever but she did have six children total and I found that out by the help of others. I believe the reason she never married was because she had children with her half-nephew from her older, half-sister Nancy (Snead) Brumbelow. I believe the father to be Joseph Solomon Brumbelow. He was also known as "Joel" like his father Joel Brumbelow. Although he later married to someone else, he still continued to have children with his half-aunt. This is my theory on it but I feel it is exactly right. A couple of the children had said their father was "Joel Brumbelow." I know when Divinity died, all the kids were given away at the funeral on the spot to different families by the father. He probably could not tell his wife about having children with his half-aunt too. Such crazy stuff and the children really suffered from their actions. My great grandmother went by Sneed before she married James William Honeycutt. I do believe her father to be the same father as the others especially because her younger brother (William A. Sneed) on the 1880 census had his last name changed to Brumbelow. It was listed on a death certificate in a county just North of Morgan County. The person who knew him has his parents as Joel Brumbeloe and Vennett Snead. I am going by memory and not my notes. Obviously, William told someone about who his parents were. Vennett was pretty much meant to be "Vinity" which came from Divinity. She also went by Vinita on one of the census in Morgan County, AL. I need to look at my notes. My tree is called Miller. My email is: Dkunis2116@gmail.com. Divinity was told to be buried in Pisgah Cemetary near Flint close to Decatur and Hartselle, Alabama by her nephew (Erbie Thompson.) I called him back around 1995 when I first started doing genealogy work. He told me that part on the telephone from Oklahoma to Alabama. I contacted the family of Sinia Alice (Brumbelow) Vest. I talked to Debra Darlene (Vest) Wade. She was the Vest family historian back then. I hope I helped some. Good luck!

Thank you both for responding to my query. Since I posted it in 2000, I have found a great deal of information on the Snead and Thomas families, much of it on a 2001 research trip to areas where the family lived around the Pee Dee River in North and South Carolina, so I now have pretty much the same information as you. However, Ron, you list Israel Sneed's year of birth as 1730, and that must be an error, as he had children born in the early 1730s. I think he must have been born between 1700 and 1710, probably closer to 1710.

There is a significant amount of documented information about Henley's daughter, Lydia, and the Thomases, including Lydia's descendants, in the book "Snead Notebook" by Elizabeth Shue on pages 50 through 64.

A recent effort to locate a copy of the book online was fruitless. Perhaps a copy is available to you at your local library. That is probably a longshot, but the best first step to access. If you can't get it that way, send me an e-mail at maxsnead@yahoo.com and I will send you a copy of the relevant pages either online or by postal mail as you wish.

Max Snead

All were born in VA and Wm D. and father Benjamin died in MO.

Can anyone help clarify the ancestry of Wm. D.

I am helping a friend trace her family. Her father was Carl Walter Snead, her grandfather was Albert J. Snead, her ggrandfather was Charles Curtis Snead, and her gggrandfather was William D. Snead. William D. is sometimes listed as W.M.D. or Wm. D. The best we can tell, so far, is that William D. was born 28 Apr 1818 in VA. He migrated to Lincoln Co., MO as a young boy with his father who we think was Benjamin Snead. He died in 1902 in either Lincoln Co. or Warren Co., MO. Here is where we are stuck. There are so many Benjamin Snead listings for VA in several different counties.

Does anyone have a clue to where we can go from here? Feel free to contact me at my email.

Thanks,
Sandy Lipsey sbjol1@netzero.com
I do have some information on the Shockley Snead you describe but to date have not found the connection to the Snead's related to Henley. I suspect there is a connection but additional information is required to sort it out. I have been trying to locate a potential y-DNA sample taker from the Shockley Snead line to try to tie it in. So far unsuccessfully. I have another contact from the Shockley line that might also be of help. Please drop me an e-mail and we can discuss this further.

I believe my mother's Snead family descended from Henley Snead through his son, Absalom Snead, who migrated to Georgia, where we all live.
My Snead uncle is still alive, but not well, so his only son would be available for DNA testing. I mentioned having him tested a few months ago and he's willing.
I use FamilyTreeDNA for all family DNA tests. Is your Snead DNA Project with this organization?
Please respond to my work email address: ngordon@rocktenn.com or my home email address.
Thanks.
Nancy Gordon

Re: Revolutionary soldier, John Snead

Greetings! I hope you still have an interest in this almost 11 years later.

I have done quite a bit of research on Albemarle Sne*ds. I’m hoping that you may provide additional information.

Here is some of the information I have found.

One of the John Sne*ds in the 1750-1800 time frame, but not one of those listed in my earlier post of Revolutionary War patriots, owned about 800 acres obtained through purchase and patent in the Hogg Creek drainage (St. Anne's Parish) near present Esmont. He moved over to Amherst County in the early 1790's. He is my GGGG-Grandfather.

Another John Snead (#3 on the DAR list I posted earlier) is the one you and Dale Snead describe in your posts and the one Hatcher dwelled on in the Fluvanna Sneads book. Husband of Sarah Weaver, son of Archibald, proprietor of an ordinary in Fluvanna near Fork Union, father of three sons who married three sisters, and had seven sons each.

Another Albemarle John Sneed (#1 on the DAR list) was the husband of Sarah Johnson, son of Benjamin who lived next to the Randolph-Jefferson Shadwell property where the Glenmoor Country Club is today and who tutored TJ’s grandchild (and perhaps TJ himself).

Farmington Country Club appears to me to be in or near the area of the John Harvie-owned barracks occupied by the British prisoners captured at the Battle of Saratoga. There is evidence of the Fluvanna John Snead's brothers, Burwell and Archibald (Jr.) living at the barracks in the late 1700's (the Fluvanna book and Albemarle personal tax records). A John Sneed is associated with John Harvie in a 1792 road order pertaining to the area of the “Old Barracks”. Other details have led me to assume that this John is the one described in the preceding paragraph, rather than the one described in the paragraph before that,

There is more Sne*d involvement in the neighborhood of the Farmington Country Club and the barracks. A Jacob Sneed received patents for land in the Ivy Creek drainage in 1755 and 1756. He gave a piece of that land to a son named Alexander, and he sold another piece, mentioning in the deed another son, Henry. In 1785, the final piece of Jacob’s original patents (by my reckoning) was sold by a Benjamin Snead, his wife Jemimah and Elizabeth Harris. Benjamin’s relationship to Jacob was not disclosed, nor was Jemimah’s maiden name, nor was their relationship to Elizabeth Harris.

I would appreciate any information, clarification or correction that you may provide. The basis for the conclusions would be particularly helpful to me.

Thank you,

Max Snead

The name "John Sne*d" (where the * stands for a, e, or y) was the first choice for naming a son for Virginia families bearing that last name during the 1700's.

There were four persons by that name who appear on the DAR's list of patriots. Details on them appear at the end of this reply. The possibility of one or more others by that name should be observed by family historians. This caution is based on the presence of my John Sne*d in Albemarle and Amherst counties from c. 1770 to 1803 and my certainty that he is not one of those on the list below.

To clarify "who's who" in this string of posts, the John Snead in the initial post is #3 on the list below. The John Sneed (regardless of the DAR spelling, "Sneed" was then, and among many of his descendants, continues to be the last name spelling) whose portrait is mentioned is #1 on the list.

I have quite a bit of information on all of these Johns and I am happy to elaborate at your request. In helping others, I might find information that will help me with my search.

Max Snead

1.
Re: Sam Snead the golfer

Hi!

First, on the golfer and his relationship to other Sneads from Virginia. If there is a connection to the golfer's family tree, I don't believe it would have occurred more recently than 5 generations before your John L. What I know of the golfer's family history seems very clear back to mid-1700's Hanover County, VA.

My father maintained that we were related to the golfer, but I now know from research that it would have been way back, if at all. Only a few Sneads came to Virginia and produced descendants, so that seems to be the basis for people's belief that we are all related. The records don't support the idea that there was one common Snead/Sneed/Sneyd ancestor.

Second, on tracing your family history back from John L., I can provide some observations. You can decide if they amount to useful help.

John L. was 26 in the 1860 census and in a household with William E., age 21, and Sally A., age 15 and others named Humphrey mentioned below. In the 1850 Fluvanna census, there is a household (dwelling unit 358, family visited 359) comprised of Lucy, age 34, John L.C., age 11, and Sallie A., age 5. The questions are whether these are the same Johns and Sallies and where did William E. come from.

John's change in age from (apparently) 11 to 26 from 1850 to 1860 raises a question that may be explained by inaccuracy in the initial reporting, the initial recording or the interpretation of the old records currently. I have seen this sort of age inconsistency on other occasions when it is clearly the same person from census to census. Sally's presence in the household with a consistent age change supports a conclusion that this is the same John. William E.'s absence in 1850, and appearance in 1860, is unexplained.

The 1850 household certainly looks like a one-parent family.

The Albemarle County, VA (this county borders Fluvanna on the west) marriage records show the marriage of a William Snead and a Lucy M. Humphrey on 12/14/1834 (probably the date of the county license) or 04/22/1835 (probably the date of the ceremony). If this is the Lucy shown in the 1850 household, then she was married early enough to have been your John L.'s mother, whether he was age 11 or age 16 in 1850.

I don't have any information to account for the absence of Lucy's husband William from the 1850 household, but death seems the likely explanation to me.

Noting that Lucy was a Humphrey, I think some more clues are to be found in the 1860 Fluvanna census. Note that John L. is then in the household of Meredith (age 75) and Celia Humphrey (age 78). Seems likely to me that these are Lucy's parents. How to explain Lucy's absence? Again, probably death.

It is interesting that the Humphrey household in 1860 was a neighbor, four doors away, from a household comprised of John H. Snead, age 64, Susan, age 48, William R., age 16, and Sally M., age 14. A John H. Sneed and a Susan Robinson were married in Albemarle County on 11/12/1839.

The two Albemarle marriages, the proximity of the families in 1850 (Lucy's household was 9 families away from John H. and Susan's) and 1860, and the commonality of the children's names suggest to me a close relationship between between your John L. and John H., either nephew-uncle or grandson-grandfather.

For John L.'s father, I would look for a William from Albemarle, perhaps with a brother John H. I have studied Fluvanna and Albemarle Sneads closely for my own search, and I do not recall seeing this combination in an unassigned or available family tree, but there are several persons for whom I do not have a descendants' list, so the possibility remains. William and John were very popular names in Snead families, making it hard to distinguish one from another.

Max Snead
