There are indications that this book would provide much needed information in tracing my Grandfather's (Olin Selby Snellgrove) ancestry.

Thank you.

I am also researching this line. James Hannah was my great-great-grandfather. I can't find any information on George Snelgrove except family legend has it that he was an English Sea Captain and married a black woman. Also said she was from Kingston, Jamaica and returned there. However, I have found nothing to corroborate the Jamaica link. I do know that she came from British Guyana, listed as born in Georgetown. I have found reference to a birth of a son in 1955 to the wife of George Sinclair on the Versailles Plantation on the West Demerara Bank in Guiana. Census records show that she lived in Hamilton with daughters Jeannette and Emily and son George. In 1871 they lived beside Jeanette and James. Then Emily and Eliza moved in with them by 1881. No further record of George. Eliza owned a Fancy Store on James Street - there is an ad in the 1868 Hamilton Evening News. Sometime between 1881 and 1981 she moved to London Ontario with Emily (now Laughrey)and died there. If you have learned any more information about George Sr or Jr or Eliza's maiden name I would appreciate the info.

Thanks Susan, I will make a note. Seems likely that the Snelgrove family of Newfoundland were all related. I have a suggestion that they came from the Wiltshire area of England and CheriChase is working on other leads. So far, all I have for sure, is Roger and Emma/Amy Smith being in Canada. My branch then came to Manitoba and eventually British Columbia.

Re: Snel/llgrove and Snelgar

Hi Jo,
I have been studying my Newfoundland Snelgroves for 15 years, and can use some help in finding out where they came from. The originator seems to be James Snelgrove, who was said to be a minister for Society of the Propogation of the Gospel or possibly a Methodist. He settled in Lower Island Cove. However, there is a mysterious John Snelgrove at the same time. James was born around 1740 and died in Newfoundland in 1798 or thereabouts. His wife Ann was named Thacker; I have determined that her father William was born in Wimborne Minster, Dorset, although it's not positive. There also seems to be connections of this family through a remarriage to Sturminster Newton, also in Dorset. There are no marriage records for these people, so it seems that they married in Newfoundland. They seemed to come to Newfoundland in 1730-1740's. I know it's a long shot, but since you have a lot of information, have you ever run into any evidence of Snelgroves involved with the clergy, or with Dorset connections. I know most of the Snelgroves seem to come from Wilts.
Thanks for any help,
Susan Snelgrove
I am researching the SNelgroves of Lower Island Cove/Grates COve, and haven't found a connection to Roger yet, even though Harbour Grace is so close.

In case you don't have this, Roger may be connected to a Richard Snelgrove who is mentioned in the Plantation Records for HG, and possibly also a Robert Snelgrove. Both Richard and Robert were involved in separate land transactions with a William Stowe in early 1800's. Since it is so close, and notice the the "R's" in the names, it suggests they may be siblings. None of these names appear in the LIC and GC families.

Susan Snelgrove

Hi Katey, I am researching Snelgroves in Nfld, and thought it pretty likely I could help you. But strangely, I can't find your gg grandfather. I have hundreds of Snelgroves in my database, and figured I would have him, but I don't. There are some Hayward Snelgroves, and some Howards (trying to match father and son), and only a couple of Edwards. But none of them are yours. The best I can tell you is that most definitely he will be from a short list of places: Lower Island Cove, Grates Cove, Catalina in that order of likelihood, and then Harbour Grace, Exploits (Notre Dame Bay) and finally St. John's. The most prolific Snelgroves started in L.I.C., then one son went to Grates Cove (my ancestory), and another to Catalina. There are a few in Harbour Grace which don't seem to be tied to this family.
Sorry I couldn't help more; I am quite shocked actually I don't have him. That makes me think that maybe he came from Catalina or Exploits, because I have the least information on those branches.
If you have any other information on his family (siblings, wife), I might be able to put two and two together for you.

Regards,
Susan Snelgrove

Attempting to find the lineage of my ancestor Mary E. Snelgrove. She was born in either 1839 or 1841 in Hardin County, TN. She married Josiah Absalom "Jody" Rorie in 1856. Can anyone help me with tracing her family? My e-mail is nathanvaughanmarks@gmail.com. Thank you.

Hello GeriChase, my name is Ken Read. I too, am currently researching the family of Roger Snelgrove and Emma Smith. I have been told by another experienced researcher, that there is no record of them coming to Canada, do you agree? I am descended from Roger to Thomas to Thomas to Eva Snelgrove (my grandmother)and live in Canada.

My family name originates from Wiltshire but my Grandfather William Francis Snelgrove came to London as a young man from Sutton Veny near Warminster where his father (also William) was married to Ellen Francis (married in 1865) living in Duck St in 1881and then 52, Sutton St by 1891.The family mostly worked the land in neighbouring farms. My Great Great Grandmother Mary A Snelgrove lived at 79,Sutton St .She had lost her husband (also William) during the previous 10 yrs. William Francis' brother Frank went to live with her before going to the First World War and losing his life.He is commemorated in Sutton Veny St John the Evangelist Church.
Anyhow William Francis Snelgrove came to London to live at 28,Gt College Street St Pancras London with a landlady called Ellen Parrish. He was we think married for the first time in Islington Sept quarter 1904, his occupation at this time was a publican but later in life he was widowed and worked as a trvelling salesman. We have discovered his first wife had one child called Dudley Snelgrove who was fostered when his first wife(nee davis) died in 1918 of the flu epidemic.Dudley later became a curator at the British Museum and collected English Sporting Water colours which attracted the attention of Paul Mellon a wealthy American educated in Britain who took Dudley on as a collector for him. The Paul Mellon Foundation is huge in USA and often sponsors art exhibitions in UK.My father never knew he had Dudley as his half brother.
We do not know of the contacts between London and Wiltshire-was this with your family? They were clearly poor in Wiltshire but were their wealthier contacts in ,london to whom William came to seek his fortune?
William later met and married Mabel Thompson in 1931 when he was 64 and she 34 and they lived in 13 Moray Rd moving to Primrose Hill a few years later. He died in Lambeth Hospital in 1936 leaving mabel with 3 young children-Maurice Francis ,my father aged 8 being the eldest,Joan aged 7 and Diana (Jean) a small baby.
