You mean the opinion of the College of Arms? You can debate that with them, if you like. I don't care. I made the mistake of assuming she'd like to have accurate information.

And the DNA study does indeed show that not all branches are related. So that's not opinion, either.

I tend to agree with you - what does it really matter whether a coat of arms is a genuine one or not ?

If someone is offended by a fake then more fool them for being so stuck up as to believe that they are entitled to what is basically an outdated form of biggotry !!!

Since you indicate your Snell line is English -- and not all Snell families are related, not even the English ones -- you might want to learn more about English coats of arms and why they are associated with individuals and not with surnames, although there are places out there who like to make money on the basis of that myth.

The College of Arms is the official authority for the UK:

http://college-of-arms.gov.uk/

You might also want to read through their FAQ:

http://college-of-arms.gov.uk/Faq.htm

For others, keep in mind that there are German and Scandinavian families whose surnames of Schnell may have been Anglicized.

Hello Gerry

I've just traced my family back to the same Snell family that includes those in your message. There are numerous Snells connected to various branches of my family tree, but I recently discovered that they are all also descnded from my direct ancestors. Also, the Girts are descended from my Sigger/s ancestors.

Steve, Felixstowe, Suffolk

My great grandmother was born Anna Kelly, but married Thomas Snell. Thomas Snell's father was born in Pennsylvania and it appears that his first name was Samuel, although I did find him listed once as simply SW Snell. I will watch for your Anna.

If Dale is correct (and I would trust him on that), I can put you in touch with the person who is working on a 5-generation project for the Snell family. We had a reunion in Bridgewater in 2010. I don't like to post email addresses "out" like this, and I don't see yours when clicking on your name, so please contact me through my email address (should be visible through the link on my name) or else through my website at www.benbowfamily.com. I am a descendant of Thomas Snell, through the Josiah Snell who married Anna Alden, granddaughter of John & Priscilla.

Re: Snell

Whenever one is trying to find a New England Snell in the 17th or 18th century, and you don't know where they are from, the best place to start looking is Bridgewater, MA, where Thomas Snell, from England, settled about 1665 and was ancestor to a large family which spread out across New England and, eventually, across the country. In the published vital records of Bridgewater we find the birth of Lewis Snell to Pollycarpus and Susanna (Shaw) Snell on 29-Oct-1767 [Bridgewater VR 1:297]. I would not worry about the discepancy of 9 days as in old script it is often easy to confuse a 9 with a 0 (and I don't know when that date was recorded in the Bible, or by whom). There is no marriage record for Lewis in Bridgewater, but Mitchell's "History of the Early Settlement of Bridgewater" shows his brother Thomas marrying in 1792, and Mitchell says that "he and Lewis went to Ware." The vital records of Ware have not been published (though the FHL has film), but some of the records are found in the Corbin Collection at NEHGS. They show that Lewis Snell and Polly Lazell, both of Ware, were married there on 09-Nov-1797.

Lazell (also seen as Lassell or variants) is another old family, originally of Hingham, with a major Bridgewater branch descending from Isaac Lazell (grandson of patriarch John of Hingham) whose mother and stepfather settled in Bridgewater about 1700. Various cousins of Isaac also came from Hingham to Bridgewater in later years. I do not see Polly's birth in Bridgewater VR or in the Ware records in Corbin, so she may have been born elsewhere before her family moved to Ware. I think this is likely your couple, though.

Dale H. Cook, Member, NEHGS and MA Society of Mayflower Descendants;
Plymouth Co. MA Coordinator for the USGenWeb Project
Administrator of http://plymouthcolony.net

We are trying to piece Arvada's life together so my father can know what she was like. I hope to hear from you again soon. A few days ago we found out she was married to yet another man. We are trying to put together a timeline for Arvada's life. Thanks again. I will be on here at least a couple times a week.

I am looking for information on a Thomas Snell who would have married my great grandparents in Whitby Ontario around 1848. I know they were married at The congregational Church in Whitby. I am hoping to locate their marriage records, thereby maybe finding out who my great great grandfather was . I have been looking for this information for 10 years now.

Hi Bryan, I have not been able to come up with an obit for Harold Barth Snell. I contacted the Funeral Home and they told me that Harold's family had not given them an obituary. I don't know if they ever had one in the newspaper or not.
My wife is the former Marilyn Mattke. She was the daughter of Glenn & Malinda (Kammeyer) Mattke. She like Donna was born and raised in Fredericksburg,Iowa. Her and Donna would be 2nd cousins once removed. Any information you can give me on your brance of the Mattke family tree would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Lee

I realize you posted this a year ago, but I was wondering if you ever came up with an obituary or any other information. Are you also related to Harold or to Donna? I see that you also have asked for other Mattke information on here as well. Thanks.

Bryan
