Patrolman Charles Snipes "unplugs" runaway horse, Mobile, AL 1961

From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper

Monday, Oct. 9, 1961:

• "A Mobile policeman early Sunday corralled a runaway horse in Spring Hill but its phantom rider remained at large.

"Patrolman Charles Snipes spotted the ornery critter about 12:30 Sunday morning, bucking and snorting in front of the Pak-A-Sak Store at 150 Old Shell Road. He managed to calm the brown mustang and then stopped a passing motorist, who assured the policeman he had not seen the phantom cowboy who had left his horse there. Bewildered, Snipes was forced to leave the horse tethered at the store.

"Later in the day the mystery was solved.

"A check with Joel Whitehead, manager of the store, revealed that a clerk at the store had forgotten to unplug the ten-cent mechanical pony ride before he left work Saturday night. A short circuit caused it to start up at intervals during the night -- until Patrolman Snipes pulled out the plug."

Not my line, just sharing.

Thanks, That John Snipes appears to be mine in relationship to my grandmother. I have a hard time with all the misspelling and the wrong ages that get listed. The real person i was searching for was mygreat, great grandfather. We ave a tell that he died in the war leaving a son a widow the widow married a Gardner and appears to have the John William with a Woman named Poer. The Poer seemed to have raised his father John. She and James Poer appears to have taken children and adults in to give them a home. Thanks again.

Other than that, I am not aware of any connection to my line which would be more like
JOhn Arant b.1828-1890
Lewis Blakeney died around 1861
Joshua Watters/Walters
Elijah Walters b.1776
Elijah Arant b.1808
Alexander Arant b1813
Richard Arant b.1817
Surviving children: John F-1873, Lillie L -1882, Barbary 27 Oct 1884, Willie C 1894. The Barbary or Barbara I believe is my grandmother. She married Mody Cunninhgam in Lancaster Co., SC. John 1910 Census lived Buffalo, Kershaw Co., SC with Susan and W C.
Is any of tis the same for your family?

How very interesting. I have Hilton in my ledger. But, more importantly, I have some information on Poer/Poe family. We are talking Chesterfield/Lancaster Co, SC? Right? Anyway, one of my family ledger's is online. Google Arant ledger.
My office is moving from one room to another. My files are in movement. I will try and find the information on the Poer family b/c my Arant family was also involved and tied to them early in 1831.
Julie

I too am looking for family during that time period. I am very new to this search. What I found was father John born
about 1845 and wife Susan DOB about 1851 with children john F., Lillie and Barbary and Willie C.. I believe Barbary is my grandmother and I beieve she was married to Moody Cunningham. I am trying to find the grandfather father of Moody (Mody, Modie also called Mike). That would be the father of John William Cunningham born about 1861 married Laura Hilton. John William's father was killed in the war and his mother maried a Poer, I beieve. Those two were the main people I was looking for. I did find some thing related to a possible death certificate that John Snipes father may have been aN Edward with a sife hose name started with a V. Not much help.

We have an Aunt Edith who is Paul Eugene's widow, Paul had a brother Joseph Carl, also deceased, and their mother was Bessie Hedden Snipes. I have lots of info if this is the group you are from, let me know. Bessie had five children with Joseph Lafate Snipes. He died young and it is believed that Bessie had more children with another Snipes, Adolphus. Audrey was my husband's mother, they were all from Cashiers, Brevard, Yellow Mountain, in North Carolina. I'll check on that John for you and get right back.
Snipes of McDowell Co, NC

I just found a new line of my genealogy and found
Mary (b. 1813) married to an A. Snipes (b.1803) living in McDowell co, NC.
Their children were Thomas b.1831, James b.1833, John b.1841, Marcus 1842 and my GGG Grandmother Rebecca b. 1839 who married Robert Buchanan. Does anyone have these names in their family line? I feel like I keep hitting a wall and can't find them anywhere. I can't find any of them on any census except the 1850 one. Thanks for your help.

Re: Drury & Unity (Houlder) Snipes

I am also researching this family, because I am descended from Edith (Edy) Snipes who I believe is a daughter of Drury and Unity who married Robert P. Howell before the 1850 census. There is information about the Snipes family, including Drury, Unity, Edy, and others in the transcribed Mountain Creek Church Minutes, Oct. 1898-Sept. 1907, which I bought at the Anderson County Library, in Anderson, SC. The transcript was printed by the Anderson County Chapter, SC Genealogical Society in 2002 and appears to have been transcribed by Debbie Giles Harbin. The first reference to Drury Snipes is that he was received by experience in the October term 1842, and Unity was received by experience in the Feb. term of 1843. Drury had several encounters over the years with the church because of "having drank spiritous liquor to excess" (July 1844), charges against him in Feb. 1848, asking for forgiveness in Sept. 1853, Drury and Unity shown as members in July 1854,and granted letters of dismission to Drury and Unity in Aug. 1856. They do not shown up again in the transcribed Mountain Creek records. Hope this is helpful. If anyone has any Bible record on this Snipes family, I am hoping to locate it.

Marsha,

I am working on the Snipes family and would appreciate what information that you can give me on Drury Snipes's family. My connection to the Snipes family is through Drury's brother Sion. Some of Sion's children are married to Caldwells, Dunlaps, and Beasleys all of which connect to my family. Any info on Drury and Unity's family will be appreciated.

Also I have conflicting information on who the parents of Drury and Sion are. Most of the family trees posted on the internet have Drury, Sion, David, Mathew, Mayberry and the rest of their siblings as the children of John Snipes and Jean Killingsworth. David Snipes, a descendant of Mathew, says their parents were Britain Snipes b. 17 Sep 1776 NC d. ? and Aley Martin b.22 Jul 1777 NC d. 18 Jun 1873 GA. Any help you can give me on this will als be appreciated.

Thanks,
Rudy Caldwell
Tupelo, MS
Lpcrudyc@comcast.net
