hi dpsutton,
My granparents where Walter and Ethel Snook, they lived in Nashanic, NJ and both died there. My father Robert Wesley Snook was there son, he was born at home (Whitehouse, NJ)Jan.25, 1920 I don't know anything about the sutton family but I do know that Ethel was born in 1898 and I believe she was 84 when she died so the dates add up. If you find 1930 census some of her childrens names are Ruth, Miriam, Robert, Francis, Donald there where like seven boys and two girls I was told, but don't have all there names. I think they were both buried in Nashanic cemetry.Hope this helped Here is my email snooky1066@aol.com

Hi Lori,

You may want to try contacting Nancy Pascal of the SCHS. She is in the Snook line and has done massive research on Sussex County genealogy. I wasn't aware that her mother's first name was Elizabeth. Do you have the Death certificate of Elizabeth Snook McMickle posted on your tree?

Don

Seeking anyone with information on Walter and Ethel Snook. Walter died in 1974 and Ethel in 1981. They lived in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Walter's obit gave wife's name as Ethel Sutton Snook. I believe this is the only child of my grandfather, Isaiah Sutton and Margaret Hoffman. They lived in the Whitehouse area and after Margaret's death, Isaiah relocated to Bayonne, New Jersey. Ethel lived with his parents, Richard Sutton and Hannah Bird. Trying to find anyone who might be knowledgeable of this family and might have information regarding Ethel's relationship with other Sutton family.

I'm trying to solve some the mystery surrounding my GG Greatmother. I think she was married 3 times. Had one daughter, Mary Frances, with her first husband, Thomas Gillam. She had one grandson, Edward McGary, who might have lived with her and her third husband, Gustav Franklin, in Easton, PA. In her obit, it mentioned her three brothers, which led me back to her parents Elias and Mary Snook, which she show up with them in th 1860 census. I recently received her marriage record, which said she didn't know who her parents were. Hoping to find someone who knows about the Snook family.

No, I don't think I have partiscipated in the Snook y-DNA
project; however a professor Maurice E Snook at the University of Georgia, asked me to do one with him several years ago. The results clearly show I am related to Henry Snook. Maurice has done a lot of research on the Snook family and has compiled a lot of his work in a book. I can send you a copy if you give me a regular e-mail address. I have not found any connection with the Snook y-dna project
yet.

Josephine (Snook)(Wilson) Payne

I’m attempting to locate the name of my great-great-great-grandmother’s biological father. We did not know she had been adopted until just a few years ago when we stumbled across her birth mother’s will in land records and then ordered a copy of her adoptive mother’s will. My grandmother was born in 1856 as Josephine L. Snook in Steuben Co., New York, her full brother Charles A. was born in 1858 in Steuben Co., New York. I have not located either one in the 1860 census, but by 1865 Josephine had been adopted by Willit & Susan (Richmond) Wilson of Independence, Allegany Co., New York and her brother Charles was adopted by Willit’s brother Ward Wilson, also of Independence, and also went by the Wilson surname. Willit passed away in 1868 and Susan in 1874. It was not until we stumbled across their birth mother’s will, that we knew Josephine & Charles were actually siblings instead of cousins. Their birth mother was Sarah A. Mattison. Sarah married Charles T. Atwell of the Andover, Allegany Co., New York area sometime between 1865 and 1868. She passed away in 1909. Their half-sisters were Effie Frances (Atwell) Bice (wife of John Bice) and Nellie (Atwell) (Vanliene) Payne (wife of Melvin Payne). Grandma Jospehine married Frank H. Payne, son of Major & Orrilla Payne. Just wondering if there are any descendents out there that know more details of the Snook family, who their father was, what happened to cause the family to be divided up, etc. It would be great to hear from you.

Thanks,

Jewel
Hi Nicole! I is a pleasure to hear from you. I have been in contact with your mother a couple of years ago. She told me your dad had died. I sent her the Snook family tree. I would be happy to send to you and answer any questions you have about the Snook family. I traced the family back to 1620 in Germany. Our first American born anscestor was Henry Snook aka Heirich Schnuck. My e-mail address is charliesnook@att.net. I live in Indianapolis, Indiana. Lee Owen was by great uncle, brother to my grandfather, Quimby Burdette aka Charles Burdette and another brother Charles William.

Hi! I would like to learn more about you. Are you from Iowa? Didn't your mother marry a man named Black? It has been awhile since I researched Lee Owen Snook's death there in Iowa and I remember your mother marrying someone and moving out of state. I learned from David's wife in Wisconson that he had died. He had been working in some kind of metal fabrication plant. She said they had four children. I gave her a lot of information about the Snook family. I can take you back to our first anscetor born in this country. George Williams dad was John, his dad was Adam, his dad was Simon and his dad was Henry, his dad was born in Germany.

Seeking info on George Snook and family

My great-great-grandmother was Priscilla W. Snook Thompson, born 1844 or 1845, who I seem to have a pretty good handle on; I don't know where she was born (other than "Canada") but she shows up in a lot of censuses and it all seems pretty much orderly.

It's her parents I can't seem to make sense of. Her father was George Snook, perhaps George Woods Snook, born in England in 1819. His wife was Amy or possibly Annie, maiden name Hull or Hall, born in England in 1827 (I think).

He seems to have been an innkeeper in Brantford, Ontario in 1851, and then was a miller in Evans, Erie, New York in 1860; Priscilla was with them at the time. But then Priscilla married James A. Thompson in Paris, Ontario (near Brantford) in 1865, so I'm not sure to account for all the traveling back and forth.

And then later on it looks like they went to live with one of their kids in Akron, I think.

(It's possible that I've mixed George Snook up with another George Snook, and blended their details together. I don't think I have, I tried to guard against that, but you never know.)

So I'm curious about a few things, and I hope someone here can clear it up.

- what does the W stand for in Priscilla's name? Woods?
- what was George's wife's name?
- where did they get married?
- where in England did they come from, and who were their parents?
- what was with all the moving around?

Before I started this, I hadn't thought "Snook" was that common a name, but I certainly find a lot of them when searching.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Victoria, Annie's parents were Joseph Snook and Elizabeth Littlefair. Annie's brothers and sisters were Henry, Isabella Jane, Ellen, Elizabeth, Joseph, William and Dorcas, which must be your dorcas as they are all born in the same area. I'm not sure if I have the correct information on the following maybe you could fill in the gaps- Dorcas married Charles Jowsey and had 6 children- Alexander, Joseph Frederick, Dorcas, Millicent, Leonard and Charles. Charles married Hilda Middlesmiss. Joseph married Sarah H Potts/O'Dowd, Millicent married Charles A. Chapman, Dorcas married Harry P. Cook, Leonard married Barbara Taylor.

Sorry there's a lot of information there and hope it's right as at the moment I haven't got much to back up what I have on the Jowsey side as I have been concentrating more on the Snook side of the family.

Kendra Davidson

I meant 1774 not 1784 for the death of Johannes from Vielbach. Although many on the internet don't believe that the hunterdon (amwell) snooks are related to the Sussex snook's... my family maintains that 'some' of our Sussex 'snook' girls at the time married some of the Amwell snooks. It is interesting to note that after Keturah Lash died, her widower Peter b. 1744 moved to and married a gal in Amwell NJ. Now there were TWO Peter Snook's each married to a Maria Goss living in Amwell. Our Peter moved to PA and their Peter stayed in Jersey.

I'll post a pic of our peter's tombstone soon. it's broken and we're talking about replacing it...We KNOW we come from him. We don't know him as Koonrad either.
Bud Snook

Peter b. 1744 is NOT the same Peter b. 1758. Both married women named Maria Goss however. My 8th or 9th (cant remember without looking at family notes) was Peter b. 1744 in Dutchess NY baptised as Johann Pitter Schnuch. His fater was Johannes Schnuch b.1709. (Johannes and Julianna Catharina may be buried in Newton NJ... Johannes may have been known as 'john' by then and may have died in 1784) Peter moved to PA from Sussex NJ around 1802. His son John, b. 1770 is who we descend from (He ran a brick Mfg in Beaver Springs PA and had over 20 children). They are all buried in the Adamsburg Cemetery in Snyder PA.

Johannes and Julianna CAtherina migrated to America about 1735/36. Family's close to 'ours' at that time where you could gleam more info are the 'cleckner' or klickner' family, the goss family, the bellowsfelt or bellis family. They were 'involved' together in Germany as well as america. Also the GOSS family is heavily intermarried within our branch of snooks.
Hope this helps
Bud Snook

Joseph Snook (~1860), Enford, Wiltshire

I am trying to track down Joseph Snook (~1860), son of Robert Nelson Snook and Elizabeth Sheppard. I believe that Joseph and his brother Henry were orphaned around 1867 and that the two brothers were sent to different orphanages (Spurgeons and Muller's). I am a descendent of Henry Snook but no one has ever spoken about Joseph. Even if I am wrong about his relationship with Henry (which I doubt) this may be important to someone, and the fact is that Joseph disappears from the records after 1871 cencus. If anyone would happen to know what became of him I would love to hear about it.

Thanks!

Hi
I don't know if this is the same family, but my great grandmother was called Dorcas Snook (b. 1893 Little Bavington) and her father was also a Joseph Snook. Dorcas has a sister called Anne (b. 1882 in Haumsaugh). The only problem is that I don't have her with a brother called Tommy - though have William, Henry and Joseph. Joseph Snook (2x grt grandfather) was born in Bromham Wiltshire and moved up to the NE in and around Durham. He was a Carter, Coachman and worked with horses. Do you have any more information about Annie ? e.g. what her mothers name was ?

Victoria

i am trying to find out the parents of Elizabeth Snook of Sussex, NJ, my G-G-G Grandmother. She was born August 7, 1804 to John Snook and Elizabeth ??. She died May 8, 1880 and buried in Balesville, Sussex, NJ. She married Moses Mcmickle on November 29, 1828 in Sussex, NJ. I don't know her mom's maiden name because her death certificate just has her mom's first name "Elizabeth" and no last name. And there are so many Snooks in Sussex, NJ.

My line is through Aaron's brother, John, who married Barbara Hoppis. Most of the information that I have on the Snook family is from a cousin, John Snook, who lives in Louisville, KY. I have an Email address for him but I have never been able to contact him that way. Fortunately, I live just across the river from him in IN so if I need to reach him, I can just call. I can look up his address if you would care to write to him. He has done a lot of research on the Snook family and may very well be able to provide you with the information that you are looking for . Let me know how I can help you? Email? Address? Phone?

Regina

This is all from oral tradition, but it pans out. We've been able to trace our Divers back to Christopher Divers and Sarah Hammond. Turns out that there was a Henry Divers that was a neighbor to a Conrad Hammond according to the Sussex History book, so I'm guessing these are that couple's parents.

The oral history is that our Divers (who were originally french and anglicanized the name) married a Snook who was believed to be a Mennonite from Pennsylvania. This has to be one of your Snooks. I see that one of yours already married a Divers. I haven't researched cousin Elizabeth much yet. And our Elizabeth has a death date of 18 Aug 1925 in Jefferson County Iowa.

Also Elizabeth might have had a Brother named Jake, not sure on that point.
