Im searching for a connection between the SNOWDON family in the Huntsville Ontario area. I've been told they are related to the JOYES family and or CARLTON Family of the same area in the years of late 1800- to early 1900's. Thanks for any information that will help me with the Joyes Family tree.

This is actually my husband's family. His grandfather was John Snowdon (b 1847) and married to Jessie Catherine Donaldson. John's parents were Edward Snowdon (1822) and Ann Dodd (1823). I have Edward having siblings John, Margaret (twin), George, Joseph and Thomas but haven't proved this. It looks as though we have the same family so I'd be very interested in what info you have.

His brother Edward SNOWDON baptised 1822 with his twin Margaret in Hesket in the Forest is the one who lived at Melberlby. He was a journeyman shoemaker but later became an innkeeper.
Hi and thanks.

Yes it certainly seems that the Isabella I'm searching for is the sibling of your Thomas. I can see the parents as George (b. ~1847) and Elizabeth HENDERSON (b. ~1848).

I can see a number of census records:
1871 - Geo. & Eliz. only - 67 Stephenson St, North Shields.
1881 - Geo., Eliz., Thomas (5) & Elizabeth (1) - 101 Ravensworth St, Wallsend (Willingont?).
1891 - Geo., Eliz., Thomas (16), Isabella (12), Emma (6) & Margaret (5) - This would be the 49 Duke St Jarrow you refer to.

The only confusion is the reference to an Elizabeth in 1881 rather than Isabella that I would have expected.

Do you have the SNOWDON ancestry, from Thomas back, posted somewhere that I could peruse?

I have an Isabella SNOWDON aged 12/13 living with my great grandfather George SNOWDON at 49 Duke Street Jarrow on 1891 census. My grandfather Thomas is age 16 on same census. They later lived at I Orde Ave Willington in the 1901 census. My grandfather Thomas has married by then and is in the Boer war in 1901. She is age 21 a domestic servant. Her father was George and her mother Elizabeth so the children could have been named for them.I think we have the same ancestor.
In 1911 Thomas and his wife Mary(Malone) are living at 4 Shaftoe St Rosehill on Tyne and George, a widower of 67 is living with them.

Hi, I'm researching the Keirven family in and around what's now Newcastle Upon Tyne and North Tyneside.

James KEIRVEN (b. abt 1878 Tynemouth, Northumberland) married Isabella SNOWDON (b. abt 1880) in 1904. They had three children: Johanna (b. abt 1905), Elizabeth (b. abt 1907) and George (b. abt 1910).

The 1911 Census shows them living at (postal address) 12 Orde Avenue-Rosehill-Willington Quay.

I've searched for the Isabella SNOWDON's born around that area and time and have a number of hits. I suspect she was from Orde Avenue in Willington.

Can anyone help identify this Isabella SNOWDON?

John Snowdon, bachelor of Lamesley married Jane Jaques (or Jakes) spinster of Lamesley 5 April 1828 in Lamesley. Witnesses: John Liddle and Thomas Harley. Jane Jaques, daughter of George Jaques and Alice Best, born 27 April 1807 in Ferryhill and baptised 24 May 1807 in Kirk Merrington. She died circa November 1872 in the Chester le Street district.

Does this make any sense? I can't remember which sources I used.

Here are some Snowdons from the Stannington Bishops Transcripts:

Stannington burials

30 Jul 1770 Thomas Snowden of Plessey.
17 Dec 1770 Ann Snowden of Plessey
29 Apr 1771 Ann Snowden of Plessey
22 Jun 1771 Jane Snowden of Plessey
15 Mar 1780 John Snowdon of Placey
7 Jun 1780 Thomas son of Isabel Snowdon of Placey

Stannington marriages

12 Jul 1773 John Turnbull and Mary Snowdon botp by banns
27 Nov 1774 George Stewart and Mary Snowden botp by banns

Stannington baptisms

24 Dec 1775 Thomas son of John and Isabel Snowden
1 Mar 1778 John son of John and Isabel Snowden of Plessey
28 May 1780 Thomas son of John Snodon deceased and Isabel his widow of Placey

The following parishes are adjacent to Stannington:- Bedlington , Cramlington , Horton , Longbenton , Morpeth, Ponteland

This is from the IGI

JOHN SNOWDEN
Spouse: ISABEL FORSTER
Marriage: 12 FEB 1775 Cramlington, Northumberland, England

Our Henry might have been the son of John Snowdon and Isabel Forster. It looks like they had children baptised at Stannington. Sadly, no sign of Henry!

Definitely same Henry Snowdon born Plessey,Stannington (birth place mentioned 1 record stating it - but no baptism found in Stannington or nearby village register) died Eighton Banks 16 July 1842, have his death cert, witness present at death was daughter Alice's husband, George Jackson (son-i-law).
John b 24/1/1803 Lamesley, unable find his marriage but many records not covered online - maybe on bishop's transcripts for Merrington? - Jane born there?
Elizabeth aged 18 on 1841 census believe was same Henry Snowdon and Elizabeth's daughter born c1823.
Still researching Snowdon family.

Maybe there are several Henry Snowdons. He is with Elizabeth and another youger Elizabeth, age 18, in the 1841 census in Eighton Banks.

I could not find a baptism in Plessey/Stannington. I checked Earsdon, Horton and Cramlington. The mine there in Plessy mine closed early 1800's and many went to those communities. I did find a baptism for a Henry Snowdon but it was about 1791 or so and from Hartley.

Looking at that John Snowdon baptism--it said Henry was a native of Eighton banks. Always subject to error even in the originals. He was a 1st son.

It will be better to try to find that marraige in Lamesely. I couldn't find in the Bishop's Transcripts but it appears on an index. I have seen errors in the index--as one of mine listed a marriage date but all I could find was banns but in the end they married much later.

Good luck

Janis

Have his marriage same as married Elizabeth Young 10/8/1802 at Lamesley.
She born Newcastle c 1780 died 1859.
Not heard of Sarah Dawson. Was that transcription error?
Daughter Alice Snowdon baptised 13/6/1813 Washington, (my 2 x gt grandmother)daughter of Henry and Elizabeth, she married George Jackson 22 February 1834 Newcastle. Only found 1 child, may have been others - big gap between marriage & birth of my gt grandfather Henry Jackson August 1842 Birtley, Lamesley. Baptized 13 Nov 1842.

Alice remarried age given 42 (W) at Coxhoe, widower James French a Blacksmith at Coxhoe. James French with Alice and her son Henry Snowdon are on 1861 Census.
Alice's sibling Isabella Snowdon b 1809 married Simon Tate at St John, Newcastle 5/8/1826. 2/3 children.
Sibling Anne Snowdon born 1806 married George Rowell - had 8 children.
Nothing known if was sibling Elizabeth Snowdon c 1823
Sibling John born 24 January 1803 Lamesley married Jane of Merrington.

Sounds like you have a problem there to be worked out--I would look for a burial of Sarah though and maybe around the baptism date of the son.

The town in Northumberland is Plessy. The parish church is Stannington.

The Bishop Transcripts are transcripts and are subject to error and so must still be checked against the actual record so maybe a Durham trip is in order. May as well as make it a mini holiday and go to Woodhorn outside Ashington, NBL to look at Stannington records while you are in the area.

Janis

Oh WOW! Well, it's true that I haven't done any of the archive offices for a while but I spend far too much time doing internet research and I'm astonished that I've never noticed these Bishop's Transcripts before. I use Familysearch quite a lot too! The photography of the transcripts for Durham looks thorough and extensive. I found John Snowdon in the Lamesley transcript (at least I think I have) however, as is often the case - an answer is accompanied by an even bigger question. He was born 23rd Jan 1803 (Eighton Banks) and baptised 5 Jun 1803. Described as the first child of Henry Snowdon, pitman, native of ?Plassey (Plessey?), Northumberland by his wife SARAH DAWSON - native of Sunderland. If this is the John Snowdon we're interested in then it makes the marriage of his father to Elizabeth Young seem very strange (I haven't verified it yet but they were supposed to have married 10 Aug 1802 in Lamesley)! No, just checked, I can't find Henry's marriage to Elizabeth Young 1802 Lamesley! Something strange is afoot! I found out about their marriage on an index somewhere so perhaps it's wrong.

There. For the second time, today, you have broadened my genealogical 'horizons' dramatically!!!

If you have not done research for a while then you will be happy to know that you can at least look at the Durham Diocese Bishops Transcripts on line--best if you have broadband. Lamesely is there. http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?... Click on Europe---Durham Diocese----Durham---Find Lamesley--on the right click on the years then "844 images" you want then start looking. The transcripts are set up a bit different than regular parish records as they are done yearly--births, burials, marriages and not always in that order but done by the year. Good luck and don't get too addicted to these.

I stay in Washington when I go to England for research. In Oxclose village off of Ayton Road--one of my Snowdon rellies.

Good luck.

Janis

Janis! That is amazing! I never checked the original registers even though I know, for a period, they became much more informative. This will help a great deal. Thank you so much!!!!!

In 1851 John Snowdon said he was born in Wrekenton (aka Wrekington)
In 1861 he said "Mount"*
In 1871,1881 and 1891 he said "Eighton Banks"
All County Durham.

His age, on his census returns, correspond to a birth date of around 1803/4.

*"Mount"... His sister Isabella gave a different place of birth on each census but in 1871 she said she was born at "The Mount". I lived in Washington, until I was 21, so you'd think I'd know exactly where The Mount is/was. If you go North West from Washington (heading towards Eighton Banks) you enter into an area of farm land and past a hill that we always called "Shaden's Hill" there are two roads going off to the right called "Mount Lane" and "Mount Road". I'm presuming that "The Mount" was somewhere round there.

If John Snowdon wasn't baptised in Washington then perhaps it happened Saint Thomas in Eighton Banks. Durham County Records have the registers for Saint Thomas Eighton Banks 1857-1979. Perhaps that's when the church was consecrated and there are no earlier registers - then it's possible that John would have been baptised at Lamesley. Genuki have an index for Lamesley baptisms but it only goes up to 1797 and there are no Snowdons in it. There's no Genuki page for Wrekenton... I can't remember if it has it's own church.

I'm going to have to get myself off to the Durham Record Office!

Again - thank you for enabling me to move on with the research! I wonder what happened to Alice. I could tie Anne Rowell (nee Snowden) primarily because her mother was living with her in 1851 and then her brother was with her in 1881 and 1891. Finding Alice (if she survived into adulthood) might prove more tricky!

I'm decended from a Henry Snowdon born roughly 1776 who married an Elizabeth Young in 1802 in Lamesley. Henry and Elizabeth appear in the 1841 census living in Eighton Banks and Elizabeth is on the 1851 census in Kibblesworth. Eighton Banks and Kibblesworth border Washington and, infact, their daughter (my gt gt gt gt grandmother) Isabella was baptised in Washington.

So it's possible that there's some relationship between my Henry and your Robert. I'm absolutely stuck at Henry though! Apparently Elizabeth (Young) was born in Newcastle circa 1781 but where Henry came from I don't know.

Any ideas?

Henry and Elizabeth had three children (that I know of)Isabella (1809), John (circa 1804)lived most of his life in Kibblesworth apart from in 1841 when he was in New York (near Oxclose in Washington) and married a Jane Jacques in 1828, and Anne (born 1806) who lived most of her life in Kibblesworth also (apart from 1841 where she lived in Usworth. Anne married a George Rowell.
Fellgate is in the SW corner of Jarrow in the triangle between the A194, A19 and A164 main roads, dissected by the Metro rail line - hope that helps.
I'd almost forgotten I'd put this query up. Robert Snowdon (1797) married Mary Maughan as Janis said. His parents were Robert Snowdon (1767 - Rothbury) and Anne Storey (1773 - Belsay), married 17 April 1796 in Jarrow. His parents were Roger Snowdon (1733) and Elizabeth Scott (no detail), married in Elsdon - near Rothbury in 11 June 1767. Roger's father was Alexander (abt.1694)who married Eleanor Bolam in 1724 in Rothbury and his father was William SnAwdon (1666 - again Rothbury area of Northumberland)who married Dorothy Clarke. Read Anya Seton's book 'Devil Water' for stirring stories of this family and the Derwent valley: she's also descended from the Snowdon's of Ryehill .
Enid

Thank you for the information but I am not sure if it is the same family. Irenes father was called John James Snowdon and her mother Annie (nee Kirby) John Hames workes as a shipyard rivetters holder-up - whatever that is I should think in the dockyard in Portsmouth as they also lived very close. I should imagine with the surnames of Snowdon and Kirby they must have come from the north of England somewhere. I shall just have to keep searching for more clues.
Thanks for your help.

My 4th Great Grandfather was Roger SNOWDON (b.1735 in Rothbury). He married Jane STOREY (b. 1738 in Rothbury). They had four children that I am aware of. These were: Robert (1767), Alexander (1768)who married Mary RICHARDSON, Margaret (1770) and John (1772. All children were born in Rothbury.

Are there any connections with your SNOWDONs?

Terri

My ancestors are William Snowdon of Alnham born Bolam in 1748. He was a farmer. His son John married Mary Storey in Rothbury in 1807 and moved to Warwick Cumberland where they had many children. John the eldest son moved to live in Durham and then to Willington Quay. Two brothers, Robert and Thomas moved back to the North East while Edward stayed in Cumberland. George Snowdon my ggrandfather was born in North Shields, my granfather Thomas was born in Willington Quay as was my father Norman Snowdon in 1912.perhaps there is a link up smewhere in our family tree
Best wishes sSdee

I have had this message board "gatewayed" to the Snowdon mailing list. Every message posted to the board will be sent to the mailing list as well, so it is no longer necessary to cc the list.

When you reply to messages, keep in mind what they will look like when they go to the mailing list as a single message.

And don't forget to check the Snowden board and list. I've seen nothing which tells me that SnowdEn and SnowdOn are different names.

Diane Hettrick
List/Board Admin
Snowdon and Snowden
