I was married to James Howard Soles that lives in Littleton, Wv. His dad Ralph Soles told me that when he was young the bank would get his & his brother's (Red) accounts mixed up. Ralph to me that his birth name was Sole but he added the "S" to his name so the bank would not keep getting their accounts mixed up.
Ralph's brother Red has past though the family lives on the ridge in Pa only 3 miles from the home place.
Ralph & his wife Karen live in the home place that Ralph grow up in. They had James & Roy. James Soles lives in Littleton,Wv on Lemily Ridge just apx 1.5 miles from his parents. I hope that helps. There are stories about the tunnel being hunted due to men being killed in it.

Mary was 1 of abt 13 children with many brothers (william, edward, george, frank. She was b abt 1873 on her parents dairy farm (may have been in Cambridge, England?)

Mary's 1st husband, George Tillyer had a fish 'n chip shop, don't know where? George left her a widow abt 1905-1912?

Mary & George married abt 1898 had 2 children:
Edith aka Ede oe Eve Tillyer b 1898-1904??, 1924 lived in London with her husband Ed Alcot/Ed's dad who was a London cemetary gameskeeper, her half sister Gwen Violet Nelson aged 12/b 1914. Her half brother Stanley Louis Nelson(my paternal granddad) stayed with her during 40's WWII in Muswell Hill, London. She died abt 1972 in Weston-Super-Mare.
George b 1898-1904??, I know less about...he was a Royal Navy hardhat diver during the 1920's-30's...

Her 2nd husband was Henry Frederick Arthur Nelson & had 3 children in St Andrew-the-Less, Cambridge:
Vera Lily Nelson b1910, Stanley Louis(b1912 my paternal granddad) & Gwen Violet(b1914)
Mary Sole died abt 1953 where she lived 142 New St Cambridge, England.

Do you have any info on Mary Sole, George(maybe Harry?)Tillyers, or Edith Tillyer??

Their where many David Sole's. There is currently one living in Fairmount, Wv. The Sole family was big in Hundred, Wv. You want to start with Sole, Church and McMasters. The Sole family married alot of Church and McMasters. The farthest I was able to go back for my childrens report for school was Peter Sole Birth 02/15/1800 and he died 06/08/1865, he had a son named James d.o.b 1830 and died in 1879, he had a son named George who married Mary A. and his D.O.B was 1861 and hers was 1863 and they had 5 children Arlie, Ottie, Opal, Samual and Lawerence. Lawerence was born in 7/11/1900 and he had 5 children with Izola McMasters (Sole) Harold(Melvin), Betty Fluharty, James Sole, Marjorie Hanway(Sole)) and Burl Richard Sole which was my grandad. Lawerence had an affair with a women named Alta Sole in Wetzel and they had a son together named David, so the story goes. She past away I believe in 2007, she was still living on the farm. The sole's migrated to Ohio for the Ohio Refinery on the Ohio River looking for jobs having to do with oil, coal and mining. They where into hard labor jobs, including farming. You have to start with Peter and work your way up. I had to ask my parents and I remember Alta always talking about it when we went to visit. I live in northern Ohio and the whole family said to me if yopur doing a project like this, you need weeks with the name because it dates back as early as 1587 with "The search for the Lost Colony" Hope this helps you. I am looking for information on my grandfather Grover Cleveland Sole or Soles - all I know is he was born in 1888 and died in 1941 and he lived in Sistersville, WV. He had 3 sons with his first wife, Lester, Woody and Ebby, and 3 children with his second wife, Helen (my grandmother), Paul, Mary and Doris. Hi, I am looking for information on my great great grandfather, the Reverend John Sole of Portsea Island, UK. He was married to Elizabeth Rae of Scotland in 1843/44. John and Elizabeth came to Canada in 1863 by way of New York along with their 2 children. The family is buried in Guelph, Ontario.

I believe you are referring to my great great grandfather. He migrated from Michigan to Montana 1910, homesteaded with my great grandfather and the inlaws the Cole family and then to Upland/Ontario 1924 with his son Thomas James Sole who is my great grandfather. His son George Thomas Sole was my grandfather born in Standish Michigan, migrated to Montana 1910 and migrated to Upland/Ontario area around 1931.

Good evening all of you great researchers out there. My name is George Andrew Sole, son of Erna Earl Sole, Jr., grand son of E.E. Sole, Sr., g-grandson of George Haymond Sole and Mary Caherine Shreve.
I have come to the conclusion that anyone who doesfamily research on the Sole or Soles family from Wetzel County WV deserves a medal! There are so many Jacobs and Peters and Georges that one could just throw all of it into the air and hope it lands in some order that is believeable.
Anyway, I have found 2 wives for a David Sole who I believe is my g-grandfather: Julia Anna Higganbotham and Mary Snodgrass. I'm wondering if there were 2 Davids, or if David had 2 (or more) wives. If anyone could help I'll certainly buy you a case of beer the next I come over to the Pine Grove area!
Also, does anyone know how the great influx of Soles came into the Ohio Valley? I used to live in New Matamoras, OH, and there were Soles burried in the cemetary in Fly, OH, and also at he Witten cemetary near Sardis, OH. Also, my father and I used to go over and mow the Burchfield Cemetary in Burchfield, WV (the one that sits on top of that steep hill behind what used to be the Sole farm house), and there were plenty of Soles in there. Dad also told me there was a train tunnel near Hundred, WV, called the Sole Tunnel - and I know there are just shy of a billion Soles in Hundred.
If anyone could help, I'd greatly appreciate it! My plan is to put this all into a book. As I'm deploying to Afghanistan or Iraq here within the next 6 months, I'd like to gather as much research material as possible so I can occupy my time while I'm there. Please let me know if you can help!!!!!

Ezra Sole, Wetzel County WV Obituary

I was just provided the obituary for Ezra Sole of the Hundred area of Wetzel County, WV from Mariana Zuelsdorf (a lookup person at the WVGENWEB website).

Ezra was born 30 Nov 1868 in Hundred, Wetzel County, WV and died at the county hospital in New Martinsville, Wetzel County WV on 21 Sep 1936. He was buried 23 Sep 1936 in the Harmony Cemetery in Cottontown/Burton WV.

Ezra was the son of George Sole & Matilda McGlumphy. Ezra's grandparents were Peter Sole & Sarah (Sally) Church. Ezra was married to Melinda Ellen Hostutler until her death and later married Arena Kiges or Kiger - haven't determined who Arena actually was.

His obituary, undated, reads as follows:

Funeral services for Ezra Sole were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the home at Sanc??. Mr. Sole died in the hospital in New Martinsville Monday morning following a brief illness. he was 68 years old. Burial was in the Harmony cemetery at Burton with Garret Hunt, funeral director, in charge.

Mr. Sole is survived by his widow, and a son, Jack Sole. He has been married a second time, his first wife having died more than twelve years ago.

His son, Jack, is actually George Jackson Sole.

Alva M. Sole was actually born in Wheeling, WV. After a study of the relevant Censuses and a few Sole family trees, I have concluded that he was the son of James Oliver Sole and his 3rd wife, Melissa Bowen. They were married on 03 Dec 1882 in Tyler Co., WV. His 4th and last marriage was to Annie Cummingham, on 06 May 1897 in Wetzel Co., WV.

m. 2nd: Gradys Gray Flannery (1909-1971), b. Martin, Floyd Co., KY,who was my youngest aunt. They met in Maryland or Washington, DC, when she was at the USNA in Annapolis, MD, during WW2; my aunt was a career Naval Officer, and they moved to Pensacola, FL, where she was stationed; they retired to Clearwater, Pinellas Co., FL, where they both died.

They had no children.

At the time that I met Alva M. Sole, between 1940-1945, he was an Postal Inspector working out of DC. He was an amazing character, and made a lasting impression on me. I'm trying to fill in his ancestry.

Is anyone acquainted with his history?

There used to be a fair amount of stuff about him online, as a pioneer and early advocate of air mail service, but info about him is now dwindling.

Soles of Wetzel Co WV and Monroe Co Ohio

I am the great grand daughter of Jarret and Christina Soles of Monroe Co Ohio. Grandfather Jarret died about 1896 and Grandmother Christina in the early 1900's. They originally came from PA---at least he did (possibly McKeesport). I have very little information on any of the Soles.
Jarret had several siblings---mostly or all brothers---and if I am not mistaken his father was Jacob and his grandfather was Peter.

I am not sure but your Peter Soles may be a brother to my Jarret or at least a cousin. I know we are related to the Wetzel County Soles (and Monroe Co. Ohio) There is a HUGE brick wall surrounding the Soles family!!! If you would like to correspond let me know.

William Leonard Sole

William Sole married a Nortrad Dohmen in 1946, had one child William Gerhart Sole, then disappeared from sight. We have William marrying Reiko Rowakami in 1956 and from that union they had four children, but that is all we know for certain.
William was born in West Hartford, Connecticut.
Can anybody help to fill in any details.

Doctor James Reuben Sole b 2 Sept 1869- 30 Oct 1918 is buried at the Miller Cemetery in Boone Co. WV. (Son of James Oliver Sole ) His infant son Harold Ray Sole is buried there also. Doc Sole's second wife was Ethel M Owen b 8 Aug 1888 in KC Kansas and died 30 Aug 1967 in Des Moines IA. She was the daughter of Elisha or Elizah and Julia M Unknown. My father was a son of Doc Sole and Ethel Owen. would love to share information

Seeking info on Charlotte Sole, born abt 1849 in Lee, Kent England, possibly Saint Margaret, Lee Kent....
She married Joseph Stammers 1870 at Croydon, and had 7 known children.
The youngest, Florence Grace Stammers, born mid 1889 is my great grandmother.
Looking for info on Charlotte's parents, siblings etc and anything else on her.
Charlotte's mother may have been named Sarah, but not sure.
Looking into a few possibilites, but could really use some help.

yes i have details of sole family tree dating back to 1700 and its a very big family and yes we do have more than one william james sole. can you send me your email addy and then i can send you copies of all that i have. i met a new member of my family a few days, my grandfathers brothers daughter and also her daughter, which was a wonderful meeting. regards denise nee sole

Henry Church and Hannah Keine Church were the parents of Sarah Church (1805 - 1891) who married Peter Sole (1800 - 1865). Peter and Sarah had a daughter Hannah who was born ca. 1841. I suspect, however, that the Hannah Sole who was born ca. 1836 was a daughter of John and Johanna Sole. I also suspect Peter and John Sole are sons of John Sole(s) who lived in McKeesport before removing to WVA and grandsons of Peter Soles who settled in McKeesport in 1797.

Please can someone throw some light on Ethel.
She was born Ethel Willoughby Barwick and married R. Sole sometime after 1903.
The only evidence after that date is her death in the 2nd 1/4 of 1960 having died at Chelsea.
