Hi there, it's great to hear from you! Peter McMorran's brother Robert McMorran (1833-1915) was my great-great-great grandfather, so I guess that makes us cousins of some sort.

Hi, I realize you posted this 2 years ago, but I may be a relative of yours. I'm related to the McMorran family. I noticed that you had my grandfather, Milton Gasper, on your family tree. My great-grandmother was Elizabeth McMorran, and her father, Peter McMorran. Hope to hear back from you!

Debbie

Having trouble opening link to your Somerville Reay info. My latest family branch has taken me to Mary Margaret O'Neill marr to Edward Reay (b abt 1885 Drogheda). I found a record for a 1927 immigration through NY for an Edward Ray [spelling in record] of Drogheda(right age) going to sister-in-law Annie Summershill (could this be Somerville)in New Bedford Massachusetts. He left from his brother Henry Reay's residence (Sunday's Gate, Drogheda). Is he part of your research? Note that Mary Margaret Reay's mother's mn was Quinn. Most of her mother's siblings had emmigrated to Fall River, MA which neighbored New Bedford.

A John Somerville line with possible connection to Ampherlaw House

Connection between John Somerville / Mary Watson to Ampherlaw ???

Have been trying to go back on the family of John Somerville. First what is ‘known’.

1) John Somerville and Mary Watson had the marriage proclaimed on January 12 1800 according to the Account Books of the Kirk Session of Carnwath Scotland.
2) John and Mary had 10 children: Agnes born August 1, 1801, James H. born November 13, 1803, Robert born December 11, 1804, John Watson born October 6, 1805, William born April 17, 1807, Barbara born December 19, 1809, John born July 17, 1812, James born January 16, 1815, Robert born July 22, 1817 and Isabel born July 18, 1819.
3) John and Mary’s daughter, Agnes, and her husband, William Steele, and their children lived at Jeanfield for almost 20 before their immigration to the U.S. in 1856. The reason, according to family lore, is the connection between Agnes’s family and Ampherlaw. They are listed on both the 1841 and 1851 census at Jeanfield.
4) We know from other documentation that Jeanfield was / is one of the properties that make up Ampherlaw.
5) The 1841 Census lists Mary Somerville, age 50, in Braehead with two apparent grand-daughters living with her, Mary Chambers (should be Chalmers) age 6 and Isabella Ingles age 8. John and Mary’s daughter Barbara married William Chalmers. From other documentation we know that the Ingles family was very much inter-twined with the Somerville’s of Ampherlaw House.

There are many bits and pieces that seem to connect them to Ampherlaw. Ampherlaw House was a long time home to a Somerville line, just very very difficult to tie this Somerville to that place.

From hints so far it looks like John's parents ight be a James Somerville and Barbara ???? (she is listed only as Barbara Somerville on all the OPR's found) and a John Somerville and Janet Somerville, again no maiden name has been found, she has always been listed as Janet Somerville in the OPR's.

Do this family sound familiar?

Bob
Hi Kerriemae
Thank-you for the information, I have only just read your post. I have not completed my research on Charles Somerville as he was only part of the Holdsworth clan for a short period. I believe he had a daughter ( who died approx 1 year old) and son to a previous wife prior to him moving to QLD. I have found some information on him in the Cairns Post discussing a building project he was involved in after a cyclone had damaged the area. I was aware he was a tradesman as I was told he had built a beautiful table for my eldest aunt ( his eldest step-child).

JohnSsomerville Son of James and Barbara Somerville ??????

Have been trying to crack tis bruickwall for several years.

Onegreat great grandfather was John Sommerville, born Carnwath, Lanarkshire, Scotland July 17, 1812. He was a son of John Somerville and Mary Watson. The Somerville name has been in the Carnwath area since the Norman's invaded. Trying to find his parents has been problematical at the best. The current 'possibility' is a James and Barbara Somerville.

James and Barbara's last residence was Braehaed. James died April 9, 1844 and Barbara died June 19, 1832. Reviewing the OPR's for their childrens birth find's the following children:

James born May 27, 1770 in Carnmwath
Francis born November 29, 1772 in Carnwath
John born March 23, 1776 in Aberdeen
Janet born July 27, 1778 in Carnwath

The only hang-up on these parents is the location of John's birth. From the OPR's we find that the children of John and Mary Watson followed the naming convention fairly close for the time in Scotland. John and Mary had the following children:

Agnes born August 1, 1802 in Carnwath
James H born November 13, 1803 in Carnwath
Robert born December 11, 1804 in Carnwath
John Watson born October 6, 1805 in Carnwath
William born April 17, 1807 in Carnwath
Barbara born December 19, 1809 in Carnwath
John born Ju;y 17, 1812 in Carnwath
James born January 16 1815 in Carnwath
Robert born June 22, 1817 in Carnwath
Isabel born July 18, 1819 in Carnwath

Following the naming convention, then in place in Scotland, the names for John's parents (childrens grandparents) should be James (furst sin named after his father's father) and Barbara (secobd daughter named after her fathers mother).

This James and Barbara seem to be the only ones that even come close.

They are in the Carnwath Parish
Search of OPR's finds children of the correct age
There are no other's that even come close in OPR searches.

Does this James and Barbara match up with anyonme? Barbara's last name is never listed on any of the birth OPR's and have been unable to find a marriage OPR.

Would the place diffence make it impossible or even unlikely these two might be the correct parents of John Somerville who married Mary Watson?

Thank you

Bob

Emily Somerville

I am looking for any information on the antecedents of Emily Somerville who married Guiseppe Folliero De Luna in Malta in 1875. Guiseppe was 61 at the time, a former Consul General for the Bourbon Court and he and Emily proceeded to have 4 children in the next 7 years, one of whom was my wifes grandfather. We have lots of info on Guiseppe but the only info we have on Emily is a statement on the site for mediterranean noble families that she was believed to be from a Scottish aristocratic family, but with no proof or detail.

Searching for relatives of Sarah Bell McMorran (1859 - 1947) and William Paterson Somerville (1849 - 1896). Their children were: Robert William Somerville (1878 - 1963), Barbara Kinnaird Somerville (1879 - 1977), Agnes Paterson Somerville (1883 - 1965), and John Somerville 1887 - 1962). The family originated in Scotland, and came over to BC, Canada after William's death.

Robert married Maggie Donaldson (lived in Trail, BC); Barbara married Francis Thomas King (moved to Saskatchewan), Agnes married David Grant and moved to California.

I don't know much about John's family. I believe he married a Mary Anne Whyte in Vancouver, BC in 1912.

Roger Somerville father of Catherine (or Katherine) is referred to in Burke's as "Roger Somerville, of Grindall". According to research done by Francis Grindall http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mandy.walker_/Mediaeval%20Yorks... drawing on archives esp from University of Hull this Roger was granted a tenancy for life of the manor of Grendale (alt spelling) June 9th 1331. He earlier received c.1313 Gift in pure, widowhood: Isabella, widow of Sir Robert de Somerwile to her son Roger de Somerwile. And aft 1317 Gift in marriage: Richard de Saltewik to Roger de Somervile and Matilda daughter of Sir Walter de Grendale.

This is Isabella de Merlay who married Sir Robert Somerville of Wychor, Staffs. Although Roger was born in Wychor he obviously ended up in East Yorks where the family had estates and took a life tenancy of the manor of Grindale hence ' Roger Somerville of Grindall'.

Just one thing, on your web site you mention dau of Thomas Burdett marrying a Cave but I think you have Thomas from Warwickshire (who links in to de Berkleys etc) but I'm afraid he is not Thomas Burdet of Rothwell (Rowell) Northants.
I have uncovered that Bertha Louisa Somervill of New Plymouth, Idaho was married on 6 June 1954 to Jasper Sossong at Shelton, Mason County, Washington. They had two children: Timothy Sossong (1963) and Rita Sossong (1965) who are still living. Bertha (Somervill) Sossong passed away on 25 April 1993 at Moses Lake, Grant County, Washington.
Bob Schoonover, Family Historian, Email: schoony@comcast.net

I recently acquired a photograph taken about 1900 in Jackson, Michigan that shows two girls, ages about 3 years and 6 years old. They are identified on the back of the picture as Myrtle and Icie Somervill - Orlando Somervill's 2 oldest girls. Orlando Somervill was known to be living in Grass Lake, Michigan, near Jackson, most of his life. Does anyone have any additional facts about these two girls?
Please contact Bob Schoonover, Family Historian, at Email: schoony@comcast.net

William SOMERVILLE 1829 Leitrim Ireland to NY to TX

My great-grandfather William Somerville was born 17 May 1929 in Ireland; according to a family member's records he was born in County Leitrim. I have not been able to find a birth registration for him in the Irish records that are available online. William's mother had remarried after the death of his father. William was ready to be on his own, and his mother encouraged his desire to sail to America. William sailed on the ship Robert Parks in 1946, turning 17 on the way over to New York. (Some records say 1948, some list him as 19, but the story passed down through the family was that he left home at 16.)

William made his way to Florida and then to Texas, arriving there in time to be in on the civil war. He married after the war and stayed in Texas until his death 13 May 1917 in Red River County, Texas.

This is supposed to be the same Somerville family as the branch that settled in Castlehaven, County Cork. If you have any connection to the Somerville family in Ireland, I would much appreciate any leads as to who William's parents might have been. Thanks!

Sharon Lunsford

John Somerville and Mary Watson of Carnwath, Lanarkshire, Scotland

Several of us have been trying for several years to tie down this family. It is the family of John Somerville and Mary Watson. They were born ca 1770-1780 in Carnwath, Lanarkshire. No marriage record for them has ever been found. Peoplw have looked at the records locally (both Parish and non-parish records) along with the OPR's at ScotLandsPeople have been endlessly searched. We have been able to find the OPR for Mary's birth along with all of her brothers and sisters. We hjave never ever been able to positiviley id John's birth and his parents though. We do however have OPR's for the birth of all their children starting in 1801 with Agnes. We know that Mary parents were John Watson and Agnes Hastie. We have the birth OPR's for their children.

What we do have:
John Somerville and Mary Watson were the parents of:

Agnes Somerville born August 9, 1808 in Carnwat
James Somerville born November 13, 2803 in Carnwath
John Watson Somerville born October 27, 1805 in Carnwath
William Somerville born April 21, 1807 in Carnwath
Barbara Somerville born December 19, 1809 in Carnwath
John Somerville born July 26, 1912 in Carnwath
James Somerville born March 5, 1815 in Carnwath
Robert Somerville born June 22, 1817 in Carnwath
Isabel Somerville born July 26, 1819 in Carnwath

One note of interest on these children. From going over the OR's. you can see the change in the spelling of Somerville. Up until about the birth of John in 1812 it was Somerville then with the birth of James in 1815 it was written as Sommerville. That is one mystery solved. The family appears to be following the 'normal' Scottish naming convention, first son named after paternal grandfather, first daughter named after maternal grandmoth, second son namerd after maternal grandfather, second daughter namned after paternal grandmother. We see in the childrenb of John the same naming convention. This should meen that John's parents were named James and Barbara. There has beena Jamws and Barbara Somerville found, but not all there children were in Carnwath.

There is no reason to think that they were not legally married in church as all their children were baptised. We would really like to fing their marriage record and then find John's parents. The one James and Barbara pair that was found did have three or four children born in Carnwath and one son (John) born in Aberdeen. Everything matches up exept the distance between Aberdeen and Carnwath.

I have read all the published documents on the Carnwath Somerville family. While it would be nice to count this line into them, no evidence has ever been found to connect them. Only the surname and town are the same.

Any idea's?

Bob

Somerville/De Lunat in Malta

My wifes family has the name Somerville passed down. It comes from Pius Somerville De Lunat, her grandfather, whose father was Joseph De Lunat and, by family tradition, lived in Malta (this would have been in the 2nd half of the 19thC. The marriage certificate for Pius (sometimes anglicised to Paul) from 1914 lists his father Joseph as dead and his occupation as Consul General. My speculation is that Joseph married a Somerville and the maiden name of the wife was passed down as a christian name. I am aware of several Somervilles in Malta in the 19C but have not made the connection. I would be very grateful if anyone can shed light on this Somerville/De Lunat thread and would be happy to share info on the descendants of this line.
I'm interested in the Jemima that John married. Apparently, after he died she married a Whittaker (or was Whittaker her maiden name?) She ended up with her daughter Florence and her husband Henry H. Potter in S. or N. Dakota where she died. I'm trying to track down a Jemima Fralick who married a Whittaker in the Prince Edward District of Canada ca 1839.

Three Somerville mysteries - Lancaster & York Counties South Carolina

Three Somerville/Simeral mysteries solved!
Three persons in the vicinity of York County (& Lancaster
Co.), South Carolina in the time period 1790-1822 have long
mystified me as a Simril researcher:

(1) James Somerville, died 1790, age 48, and buried
at Old Waxhaws Presbyterian Churchyard in Lancaster
County, South Carolina.

(2) Jean Simeral, will dated 17 March 1807, York Co., SC.

(3) Sinthey Simeral alias Synthy Simril mentioned as an
heir of two single women Jean Simeral and Mary Drennan.

Mary Drennan's will (undated), was proved 1809 York Co., SC). She leaves property to Synthy Simril, but does not
specify any kinship or relation to Synthy.

Jean calls Sinthey her daughter.

An 1822 receipt to the administrator of Mary Drennan's estate was signed by William M. Hill who claimed in
right of his wife, a legatee under Drennan's will.
Hill had to be referring to Synthy Simrll as his
wife in 1822, because the other legatees were men.

A series of documents at the South Carolina state
archives tells an interesting story.

James Somerville (alias Summerville) died intestate
in 1790. There was no widow or lawful child and his
estate in Lancaster Co. escheated (or passed by right
to the state). The Somerville land was turned over to
county trustees who built a school or used existing
buildings for a school.

In 1800 "Jane Summerville or Somerville", a bastard
daughter of James Somerville, petitioned for the land
to be turned over to her. Her petition was not granted
at the time. The 1807 will of "Jean Simeral" does not
mention her claim to James Somerville's land, but
leaves small personal items of clothes and furniture
to her daughter Sinthey.

In 1822 "Cynthia Summerville" and her husband William
M. Hill petitioned again for the property to be turned
over to them as heirs of "Jane Summerville" daughter
of James Summerville. It seems that the state legis-
lature passed a special act to allow the property to
go to the Hill couple. However, the trustees then
petitioned to keep the property for school purposes
despite the act.

No further information was found.

What kinship or relationship there was between these
Simerals/Summervilles/Somervilles and Mary Drennan is unknown.

Nor do I know of any direct kinship between them and
my James Simril who married Violet (Barry) Henderson.
Jean would have known of my Simrils who lived in the
same county. A son (James Simril Jr.) and a son-in-law
(John Soward) of my Simrils witnessed Mary Drennan's
will.

York Co., SC. Will Book A-1, pp 191-192:
South Carolina, York District. Will of Jean Simeral,
being low of body... all my property consisting of a
bed and furniture, a wheel and dresser, and my wearing apparel be sold to the best advantage and the money
arising from the sale to be put to interest until my daughter Sinthey Simeral comes of age and for it to be given to her at that time. I appoint Jas B. Fulton,
my lawful executor, dated 17 March 1807.

Jean Simeral (her mark) (Seal)
Wit: John Brumfield, James Brumfield.

August 3d 1807. The last will and testament of Jean
Simeral was proved by the oaths of John Brumfield and
James Brumfield. August 3d 1807 qualified James B.
Fulton, executor.

Jean Simeral is identified at last as the bastard
daughter of James Summerville of Lancaster Co., SC – seemingly the same James Somerville who is buried
at Old Waxhaw Presb. Chyd.:
JAMES SOMERVILLE, died in August, 1790, at the age
of 48 years
