Wow, I envy your trip. So many of the family was born in St. Constant. Yes, Maria Cayen is a question to me, I stopped my work in the Redford records when I got frustrated. I copied my typewritten entries from a volunteer in Redford, cut them into strips, and taped them to blank sheets of paper for each married couple. When I came up with Maria, Marie, and Simon in everyone's tree on-line, I had to put it down. I didn't have enough info to make any deductions.

I got into browsing the Civil War 91st NY, Co C and theorizing about the soldiers from Redford. Set my pages aside and didn't revisit my project. After that, I found Denise Gorka's tree and I saw posts from my cousin Michael Lewis. I had talked to him about 2 years ago, after he had been talking to my mom.

It sure will be interesting to find accurate connection to the parents of Paul Moyse, if it was Francois and Charlotte Denault, as Denise Gorka has proposed, page 23 of the Sorel book. Do you think the name change started with him? The family story in my previous post has multiple children "adopted" at the same time.

Definitely stay in touch with me! I've only been on-line less than a year. By-the-way, I still haven't found you! You're not in Denise's tree. Dunno what degree of cousins we are, but we share the same line as "Mike" and Sophie Henault that are buried at St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Tupper Lake, so I trust you with my contact info. My email is video411@cox.net and my married name is Rae Harris, PO Box 277, Ogden, KS 66517, phone 785-776-5932.

I will be 65 in July. My husband is a Vietnam vet, retired US Army 1984. We live just outside Fort Riley, home to the 1st Infantry Division. Roger's combat unit was 101st Airborne. I have no children of my own. My dad's family was from Tupper Lake. My three younger siblings live in Warrensburg NY, Sabillasville MD (near Camp David), and Simpsonville SC (outside Greenville). My mom, almost 91, lives by herself in an old Victorian in Theresa NY.

So, let me know which branch of the tree you're from.

I am planning on connecting the dots to a friend whose family is Sorrells.

Hope you had a good Memorial Day weekend. It's a difficult time for us.

Best wishes,

Rae

Hi Rae

There has been a lot of work done on the Laporte from upper N.Y. and if you contact Denise Gorka, she has just completed a book on the Laporte's.

You are correct that the census and church records are a smorgasbord and I've seen siblings use Sorel ; Sorel dit Laporte and Laporte.

I'm still trying to find the definitive proof of the parents of Moyse Sorel dit Laporte. The current theory is that he comes from the Sorel's hailing out of the south shore of Montreal ie the Boucherville to Laprairie area. I've scheduled a second visit to go there this summer and try and find actual documentation that corroborate the info ie marriage certificate to Maria Cayen and possibly Marie Bissonette which would go a long way to confirm the parents of Moyse Sorel dit Laporte. I have to visit several local archives.

Sorel - Laporte connection

Stumbling thru old posts. Looked for your tree, couldn't find a contemporary Louis Brousseau.

My puzzle is how some of the LaPorte's from Redford are connected to the Sorel name, but others are not. The story I remember (I was born in 1946) is that the Sorel family was split up (orphaned) after fighting at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. The children all crossed to Plattsburgh area, the older boys went off, leaving younger children in the care of a doctor named LaPorte.

Now this story is not shared by my younger sister, born in 1954, and brother born in 1957, they think there was some kind of fire that caused the Sorel name to be connected with LaPorte.

I met twin girls named LaPorte, from Plattsburgh area, as I recall, one was named Georgiana. They were a couple of years older than me, it was a Catholic Youth Organization convention in Lake Placid in early 1960's. They were familiar with the same story.

My father (Raymond Edward LaPorte, born 1916) had met another Raymond LaPorte (different middle name) when he was flighted against him in a golf tournament in the 1950's. At the time, we lived in Brattleboro, VT. That man shared the same backstory.

Long story short. I know the "dit" theory, but I don't think that it applies to our family's situation, unless they brought that "by the door" or "by the gate" designation from an area where there were many other Sorel's, perhaps where they lived outside Quebec City. At any rate, the generation that came to the US in the 1838-1840 period used both names in church records. One is Oliver Sorel, married in Plattsburgh, someone's research showed his parents as Joseph Sorel, wife Ellen Bushee; other records show Oliver's brother Frank with same parents, but using LaPorte, not Sorel. Also cited is Adolphus, using Sorel and LaPorte. This was common into my grandfather's generation, but my father's generation only used LaPorte.

So you get the idea. It's complicated. I thought at first that the answer was in the church records fro Redford, NY. It's the site of a huge number of events. But the verbal information and lack of ability to read and correct the priest's recording of their names, makes this a big mix-match. I started to track the church records, but put it aside, it was making me crazy. I believe the association goes back before Redford.

Any clues to the Sorel-dit-LaPorte? And what link can I find with Sorrell or Sorrells.

Found your old post. I'm a Sorel dit LaPorte, but I have a friend whose dad was William Sorrells, b. 23 Aug 1914 in Buena Vista County, Iowa; d. 4 Apr 2007 in Virginia.

Do you have any knowledge of this person? Ancestry.com doesn't have him in any tree except mine.

Ever since I met his son Richard about 1976, I have wondered if there was a link. Now that Denise Gorka has finished the monumental tree on "Sorel," I am encouraged to look back from "Sorrells" to see if I can come up with something.

Chasing a wisp of a thread!

Rae Harris, Ogden, Kansas

Antoine & Mary Sorrell NY 1870 Census

In the 1870 West Plattsburg, NY Census I found Antoine Sorrell 46 and wife Mary 34 with children Mary 15, Frank 13, Myron 11, Nelson 8, Louisa (or Lonesa) 6, Carrie 4, and Hattie 1. I also know they also had children Charlotte (Lottie or Lotta) in 1872 and William born in 1877. I have a photo of the couple's headstone. It reads: Antwine Sorrell 1824-1905 and his wife Mary Stevens 183?-188?. Some of the numbers are hard to read. I've seen Antoine's last name is also spelled Sorel on some records. Nelson is my great grandfather. Any help with this family would be appreciated.

Denise, I just read your message on regarding family of Joseph and Dorothy Sorel. Son Paul E., born in 1915, was my uncle. Paul died in 1975. Paul never spoke of his family. From what I understand, he had a falling out that he never reconciled. I would welcome a chance to learn more about his family, and to tell you of him. He was quite a presence in my life. Hope to hear from you. Chris.

Cheryl, I just found out my g. grandmother was Adelaide Sorel dit Laporte. I would love to see what info you have on the family from Redford, N.Y. where my ancestor was from! I have no info on her family. I know she married and was widowed early, then married my g. grandfather Louis Varin and had children, then died at age 38 in 1885. Our family has been in the dark about her until I found info two days ago. I solved one puzzle now I'm onto the next.

my e-mail address is lingara@rockisland.com

My immediate family know about an 'Ed Sarraille' who used to live in San Francisco. We heard he used to do some driving of Mayor Alioto. Also there was an eye doctor, I believe named Al Sarraille, although maybe he spelled his name Sarrail. Are you related to either of them?
