Southerland/Sutherland in Halifax Co., VA

I have a copy of the 1810 Census for Halifax County, Virginia. (Found in a book in St. Louis County Library). On the list are three SUTHERLAND men; Elias, Cliton and Henry. Cliton SUTHERLAND (I believe he is the same as Cleton SOUTHERLAND who is listed in the 1820 census and is my 4th Great Grandfather.) Others have concluded that Elias SUTHERLAND/SOUTHERLAND is Cleton's brother, but who is Henry SUTHERLAND? This is the ONLY record I have found listing Henry SUTHERLAND/SOUTHERLAND in Halifax County. Anyone out there have a clue?

Hi, I was using a friends account before "SusieQ27205" now I have this one.

The posts that are following my original post are exactly what I am talking about. All this talk about Susannah being an "Indian" is hearsay and has no proof to it. I have in my tree a Native American (not a Southerland) and he had an english name, his wife had an english name and so did their kids. I have marriage dates, death dates and their kids brith dates. On a another side of my family (still not the Southerland's) I have an many times great Aunt that was Lenape and she had an english frist and last name. And there is a marriage record, brith date and death date for her, and they even know her fathers name.

So no last name does not make someone a Native American. I have about 200 women in my tree with no last name and that doesn't make them all Native American. Susannah most likely had a last name and was of European descent.

And I still have NO proof of Mordecai's parents. There are many threoies about the many branches of the Southerland family. There are lots of sets of parents that Mordecai could fit with as the Southerland family was very prolific.

So please say that you have a THEORY (use the word theory)about his parents and list your reasons why. Also list any documents that led you to your theory (do not list another persons family tree as documentation please!!!!) and state how the document led to your theory!!!!

I look for facts, and rumors that there is a family bible with out the bible are just rumors, not fact.

Sorry if I sound mean but I am tried of one person inquiring about their theory and others takeing that and runing with it as fact. I am also tried of people coming up with theories and posting them with out stating that it is a theory.

Maybe we will never find Susannah's family, but is that so bad?

Maybe Mordecai Southerland will remain parentless for ever, but what does it mater if we never find a record of them?

I for one will continue to keep looking but I will only post facts.

If I am inquiring about a theory I will state that it is a theory.

Happy Valentines Day!!!!!!

Southerland Families of Duplin County, North Carolina

I am researching the Southerland families of Duplin County, NC. In particular, Robert Southerland b. ca 1784, his wife, Abigail Price, b. ca 1787; died after 1850 census. Can anyone tell me the name of father of Robert Southerland? Robert Southerland's daughter, Dorothy Southerland md. Francis B. Jones. The allied lines of this marriage are Benton, Hardy, Sinclair, Bryan/Bryant, & Pipkin. These allied lines were located in early records of Dobbs County, NC. Any leads or help is most appreciated. I will be happy to share research(documented. Ann C. Oppenheimer

Thanks for that clarification. You, or anyone else interested in these families, might be interested in the Henderson-Alston "riddle" (but centered on Charity Alston) on BOTH the Henderson and Alston forums of GenForum. (#11519 on the Henderson forum, and #1198 on the Alston forum).

I now know that Solomon Alston Jr. named only one daughter in his will - Charity - and that her uncle named only one daughter - Charity - in his later lawsuit against John Henderson on behalf of the orphans of Solomon Alston Jr. And that means that the second possibility I hypothesized in the riddle is null and void.

I still strongly suspect that Charity Alston had been previously, and very briefly, married to Dr. Hance Hamilton, but cannot explain why if that were true she would have remarried under her Alston maiden name.

Henderson family "experts" stoutly maintain that John Henderson had not been previously married.

So there is an Alston-Henderson standoff on the issue, begging for an answer.

Sorry old post! I have been doing more research and found that the person that gave me that info was wrong. I am now very careful in what I get from others and Always do my own research!

Thanks for catching that! Yes Ransom Southerland married Charity Alston daughter of Solomon Alston and she is listed in Solomon's Will.

The said Charity Alston KIMBROUGH didn't marry when she was young and had one daughter by a unknown man. She later married and moved out of state. They didn't have any kids together.

Kimi Southerland

Kim: I don't get it. In light of the marriage documented in Brent Holcomb's "Marriages of Granville County, North Carolina, 1753-1868, Issue 3", p. 315:

"Sutherland, Ransom & Charity Alston, 5 April 1778; Peyton Wood, bm; John Lewis Jr., Edmd. Read, wit."

...how does one rationalize the statement that "Ransom(e) Southerland of NC married Charity Alston KIMBROUGH ...."?

Charity Alson was the daughter of Solomon Alston Jr.

Hello! Great to communicate with you! I am at the same roadblock as you. Can't get past Joseph B. Little and Eliza Marshall. However, I have discovered that they have a biography included in a book about Garland Co., AR called "
"Garland County, Arkansas: Our History and Heritagef"
ISBN 978-0-9824534-0-7.)

Could you look Joseph B. up in this book at your library and pass that info on to me if there is anything new?

Also, if you go to this Goodspeed URL
http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~armpgs/garland_co_goodspeed_l....

and read the biography of L.M. Little, he is a brother of Martha Southerland. It says alittle about Joseph B Little (Pun) In the article you will see Annie Bettis mentioned. Actually it was Eliza Jane who was married to William Harrison Bettis, my GGgrandfather. Annie is Eliza's twin sister named Isabell Ann, and she was called Annie.

There were tons of Joseph Little's in North Carolina's census records as I'm sure you have discovered. Maybe some of the names of Joseph B.'s children might be reflected in these census records (such as the name Isabell).

What I have for Joseph B. is:

Joseph b. little
Born 1806
Franklin co. or wake co. Nc
Died
Arkadelphia, Dallas co., ar
Or
Hot Springs, Garland Co, AR

Eliza marshall
Born 1813
Franklin co. or wake co. Nc
Died
Arkadelphia, Dallas co., ar
Or
Hot Springs, Garland Co, AR

Married November 15, 1830 wake co. nc
Children: Elizabeth, b. 1834
mary a., b. unknown, d. unknown
Lofton M. (L.M.) LITTLE, b. 1835,
d. Jan 23, 1900 (adalaide/addie palmer).
Joseph LITTLE, b. 1840, d. date unknown.
Martha Caroline LITTLE, b. Jan 22, 1841, NC, d. Apr 24, 1834, AR. (Wm. F. SUTHERLAND)
CATHERINE (JOSEPH HOUSE)
John R. or c. LITTLE, b. 1842
Wm. B. Little
+twin Isabell A. (Annie?) LITTLE, b. Oct 17, 1845, NC, d. Feb 24, 1939, Alba, Wood Co., TX (Hanson sellers?).
+twin Eliza Jane (Nancy?) LITTLE,
b. Oct 17, 1845, NC, d. 1927 (WILLIAM HARRISON BETTIS).
Nancy Columbia LITTLE, b. 1849
+twin Henry LITTLE, b. Mar 27, 1854
+twin James M. LITTLE, b. Mar 27, 1854

My brother has a DNA match with the Marshall last name. I am doing research to try to connect Eliza Marshall to this match's name, but I haven't had any luck yet.

Here's the URL for an article I wrote that includes info about my gg grandmother Eliza Jane Little, and what she said about her famiy moving from NC to Hot Springs.

http://www.deltacountyindependent.com/component/content/arti...

I have tons of relatives from Hot Springs which include the Surnames Hawk/Hawkes, Holder, Shepher and Meadows. I look forward to collaborating with you further. I have the Little's Civil War service records. Julie Bettis Currier

My current dead-end is Jane Southerland, born about 1819 in Virginia according to several census records. I have her maiden name from the death certificates of all her children. In the 1880 census her family had a boarder named John Sutherland who was 19 and from MO, but parents from VA. She married James T Walton and had several children (James, Charles, Emilie, Virginia, Sallie, Nancy). I do not have a marriage record, death certificate, or any other information on her and am seeking anything. Thanks.

I am delighted to hear from you so quickly! I read the posting about the family Bible -- and subsequently had computer trouble for a bit. Then life got busy, and I dropped this fun Gen. game we play, for a few months. I have never been able to find that posting again. It indicated that the same writing-- as was found in late 19th C. entries for the family Bible-- had written a note on the side of the page next to Susanna's (sp?) name. The note said that the story handed down in the mid/late 1900's was, that this ancestress was a Monacan Indian; and that her tribe had all but died out. I know they mentioned that this was why she only had a first name -- and that this was typical of such marriages, because there simply was no last name. I have searched this again on Google, Altavista, and Bing and have come up empty-handed. That is rather frustrating. However, I do have the line back to Robert the Bruce by some very wavy lines -- should you care to have them. Hope you can follow this -- they come from my comments on Mary Polly S.'s pages on the "Eden's Harvest" website on Ancestry This information was pieced together from several not very gossipy resources online -- once again, my computer troubles have wiped a lot of those website listings away -- but I am really pretty sure of all of this information -- Here we go:

"Mary Polly Southerland Married David Glenn – Born Orange NC 1765 Married Dec. 31, 1798 Died 1821, Davies KY The Southerlins going back are Mordecai's parents: * Fendall Southerland 1715-1790 info at: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/SUTHERLIN/2002... and Fendall’s will at: http://www.kingwilliamhistory.org/resources_publications.htm... he married * Mary Chiles 1719- (Mary Chiles parents:John W Chiles 1655-1723 * Mary 1645-1696 John's parents-Walter Chiles 1608 Eng.-1671 VA * Mary Page 6/25/1671 VA -1655 VA) Fendall's parents: * Joseph Southerland B.
I don't know about the bible, but everything I know indicates that Susannah was a native American. I am not aware of the tribe name.Mary Polly Sutherland is the name of a daughter of Mordecai and Susannah. She was born in Burke county sometime about 1778 and was married to David Glenn. This marriage occured 31 Dec. 1798 in Orange County NC. They moved away from North Carolina and into Indiana. Mary Polly Died there before may 1830.
If any of this rings a bell with where you got your information and about the family bible, I would be delighted to know more.
I am a Sutherland by marriage and have been working on this family for 20 years.

Hey Maybe-Cousin,

I am really interested in this ancestor. I believe I am descended from Mary "Polly" Southerland. I have lost track of who posted the information on what website, but I read somewhere SOMEONE owns a family Bible which had Susannah's name listed as Mordecai's wife in old script. That poster said a later, 19th Century, hand had written that she was a Monacan Indian. It also suggested that in the family Bible Susannah was listed with no last name, because she hadn't one. Does anyone know about this Bible?

Mordecai Southerland

I am becoming very unhappy with the way Ancestry.com has their tree feature. That you can add and combined other people’s trees (to your own) without asking them or verifying info. I have seen this with several different branches of my tree. The problem I see is that someone puts an "about" date for an event and when someone copies it to their tree the “about” gets lost and you just have the date. Then people start taking it as fact not a conjecture. Also one person puts up wrong info or a theory and everyone copies it as fact.

So to address the many trees that have been posted of Mordecai Southerland,

Mordecai Southerland’s birth date and origin is unproven so feel free to theorize but, PLEASE state that it is a theory on your tree.

Mordecai’s marriage was to a Susanna on an unknown date. I have started to see dates and places crop up on the internet and as far as I have found they are undocumented and most likely wrong. As for the postings of Elizabeth Susanna Manning, I believe this comes from the before mentioned problem on Ancestry that you can copy and combined with the click of the mouse. For the record Mordecai (Sr.) married Susanna and their son Mordecai (Jr.) married Elizabeth Manning daughter of Charles Manning on 28 Feb 1805 in Orange Co, NC and later the couple moved to Henderson Co, KY. (I have documents on this as well as some of their descendants if anyone wants it) So that’s two Mordecai’s and two different women.

I have started to see a death date of 1783 for Mordecai and I don’t know where it came from. I far as I have found Mordecai’s will was written in 1818 and also proved in that year. Also Mordecai is in the 1790, 1800 and 1810 Censuses of Orange co, NC.

Mordecai’s children are listed in his will so please try not to add a child, that is not listed in the will, to him on a tree.

As for Mordecai’s parents I stated above that his origins, that includes his parents, are unproven. If you have a theory please list it as so and post your reasons for coming to that conclusion. And if you are copying from someone else you should copy that it is a theory as well. If anyone finds proof then they need to post their source (not a family tree but an actual record) to verify their claim.

Genealogy is supposed to be based in fact. To be fact you have to back up claims with records.

So sorry to sound mean but I am at my end with all the confusion. Genealogy is hard enough without have to sort through fiction to find the facts. Happy hunting!
I was happy to see someone else searching for this family line. My mother passed away in 1998 and was born very late in her parents' lives, so she had VERY LITTLE to tell me about my grandmother's side of the family. It took me months to find out who my great-grandfather was. I had no idea what Bama's maiden name was, but eventually the Van Zandt county geneology society set me off in a direction that turned out to be correct. I'm at the office, as well, but will email you the 2 pictures that I have loaded onto ancestry.com for you to see of 2 of his daughters. Do you live in east Texas? I'm in OK, but have oodles and oodles of family in the Van area. My mother is buried there, too.

Thank you so much for contacting me. I was just talking about my photo to an elderly aunt the other day. I am at the office right now, and do not have access to the photo. But, I do have a scan of it, and recently I got a tentative identification of two of the people in the photo.

We are descended from Dave's marriage to Oliva Murphy, then Erma Southerland. My oldest link to Dave is now ill with a brain tumor, and it would be great if I could ID the photo while she is still well enough to know about.

I will post back again after I get home. You can email me at lynn.huff@embarqmail.com

Thanks again.

His daughter Bama was my great-grandmother. I have 2 pictures of her, one includes her sister Indie or Johnnie, I can't remember I'll have to look at it again. Bama is buried in the Jamestown Cemetery, TX next to my grandparents. Johnnie is buried next to her. I have a trunk FULL of old pictures and I have no idea who the people are, but I believe most are from this family. I have loaded the pictures of Bama on my ancestry.com page if you'd like to look. If you'd like, forward a scan of the picture to me and I can compare to anything I have.

I see that this is rather old, and you may have all the answers by now, but be aware that Washington County used to be very large and was sub-divided into other counties, including Unicoi County where Erwin is. The community of Flag Pond is where my family of Southerlands lived for the 1880 Census. Right off, I don't recall a Charlie but there may have been.
James Southerland

His wife Juanita Watkins Southerland called to let me know on Tuesday night that the funeral would be Thursday, July 15, 2010.

JC was my cousin and he was a great help to me and many other people researching their family trees on all the genealogy message boards.

JC was also a lot of fun and he is missed very much by his family and friends and I am both.

J.C. Southerland lived in Cleveland, White Co. GA and posted his name and address on most of his message board postings.
Hi Sunny,

The names you have on your list match some of my Southerland names.I have been trying to find William Southerland's parents and siblings. My William Southerland married Cynthia Mary Clark. Their children were Sarah E. Southerland, John Calvin Southerland (my great grandfather), Henry Harvey Southerland, Ransom Roland Southerland, Joanna Southerland, and Alice Southerland. Any help you can give me on finding William Southerland (born about 1845 in Georgia?) would be greatly appreciated. All of his children were born in Texas.

I too am looking for Southerland roots. We had only known they went west from Oklahoma. I did find several Southerlands who served in the Union Army during the Civil War for NC. 5 look to be brothers from the list we have. There is a Charles Martin Southerland on our list. As Charles is a common name even today, it would be hard to say without further research to know for sure if it could be the Charles your looking for.

I just subscribed to this site this morning. So I have lots of research to get through. I will include the names I have, maybe some will match up.

Henry Harvey Southerland(Born Feb. 8 1870)Wife - Clara,
Charles Martin Southerland,
Mary Ethel Southerland,
Oliver O. Southerland,
Ranson R. Southerland (Born 1874)Wife - Julia,
Robert Harvey Southerland.

Good Luck... Sunny
Southerland Descendants

Looking for any descendants of Thomas T. SOUTHERLAND and Martha R. LINK who began life's journey in Person Co., NC in the 1840's, made their way to Webster and Union Counties in KY, to Ellis Co., TX and into Indian Territory in OK by 1888. Thomas was a widower in 1900 in Pontotoc Co.

Specifically, I am looking for John W. SOUTHERLAND born about 1872 in KY, and for Lucy A. SOUTHERLAND, born about 1890 in IT. Lucy seems to have married Earnest SMITH and had two children, William and Marthie (Martha?). I cannot find them, but would love to.

We have found some descendants of these SOUTHERLANDS: George Washington SOUTHERLAND of OK City, James Morgan SOUTHERLAND of Sequoyah and Love Counties, and Nannie A. SOUTHERLAND(Cox & Kercheval)who ended up in Mississippi.

There are indications there were several other children born between 1872-1888. Charles ?, others???

We would love to find more cousins. I am willing to share the extended family information with cousins.

It is such a rewarding journey for us to find family connections.

There are other parts of the family that accompanied them out to Arkansas. Guess this means we're probably way distant cousins, so far removed we were forgotten!
