Thanks for responding!
Although my elderly uncle said that we were descendants of the poet laureate, I have never found any connection unless it is through joint ancestors in the early 1700s, so there was probably no connection.

My Southey family was from London which I have traced with records through the early 1700s -- they seemed to have had a successful leather business there in which they made different leather products (saddles, bridles, bags, etc), and they married into other families with similar connections.

My Southey ancestors are as follows:
John Southey b. 31 Dec 1736 married to Mary Smith
William Smith b. 22 Dec 1758 married to Charlotte Moore
John Southey b. 23 Aug 1790 married to Mary Ann Kay
Ann Southey b. 12 Sep. 1818 married to Henry Penfold

Still hoping to find a Southey connection out there so if any of the above sounds familiar I would love to hear something!

I have been working on the London Southeys for several years, and am now in the process of confirming my sources (a necessary evil for historical accuracy).

If you are related to the family of William Southey (b. 1758), John Southey of London (who moved to Brighton) b 1790, and his wife Mary Ann Kay b. 1791, or one of their children, Emily, Ann, Eliza, Cordelia, or George William, I would like to hear from you. Their sister Leonora died single and childless.

Also have information on their spouses and extended families: Heath, Penfold, Razell, Scott, and Hollingham.

Kathy M.

Hi again -- just wanted to send you this. Family originally may have come from West Dean Near Chichester, Sussex – there is a Razoll family listed there with many children in the early 1600’s. Here is what I found. You will see that there are a lot of first names repeated, which was certainly the custom; there were several spelling variations as well. Sorry about the form -- I lost all the indentations when I cut and pasted this but you can figure it out from the birthdates and parents. Have fun with the information and happy holidays! If you have other questions, let me know

Richard Razell
B: 18 Mar 1689 C: 23 Mar 1689 Walberton, Sussex
Fa: Richard Razell / Mo: Mary
M: Ann (may have been christened Ann Elizabeth – due to ages and the fact that there is only one Richard Razell in the entire area, there is a possibility that she went by either of her Christian names when registering births)
Elizabeth C: 17 Aug 1701 Horsham Richard Elizabeth
John C: 13 Jun 1704 Horsham fa: Richard mo: Elizabeth
Ann C: 23 Oct 1707 Horsham Fa: Richard mo: Ann
Mary C: 23 Mar 1719 Horsham fa: Richard mo: Elizabeth
Thomas C: 10 Jan 1721 Horsham fa: Richard mo: Ann
Richard C: 24 Sep 1712 Horsham fa: Richard mo: Ann
James Razell C: 12 Jul 1726 Horsham, Sussex
Fa: Richard Razell Mo: Ann
M: Maria Nightingale 16 Oct 1750, Warham, Sussex
William Razell C: 07 AUG 1757 Rusper, Sussex
Ann Razell C: 18 Jan 1755, Rusper Sussex
James Razzell C: 26 Dec 1752, Rusper, Sussex
M: Jane Hills 19 Nov 1772 Rusper, Sussex
Jane Razzell C: 19 FEB 1775 Rusper Sussex
Elizabeth Razell C: 05 JUN 1785, Rusper Sussex
Sarah Razzell C: 04 Feb 1780 Rusper Sussex
William Razell C: 15 June 1777, Rusper, Sussex
Frederick Razell
C: 29 Oct 1809 Horsham, Sussex, England
M: Eliza Southey 20 Jul 1848 Brighton, Sussex
D: 1865 Brighton
Eliza Razell B/C: 1850 Brighton
Emily Razell C: 26 Jun 1857 Chapel Royal, Brighton
M: Alfred John Muggeridge 1882, Brighton
Thomas Razell
C: 07 Oct 1787 Rusper, Sussex M: to Mary ?
James Drury Razzell C: 14 Dec 1825 Dorking, Surrey
Thomas Razzell C: 14 Jul 1816, Dorking Surrey
Anne Razzell C: 10 Nov 1822 Dorking, Surrey
D: 02 Feb 1823
Elizabeth Razzell 23 Apr 1820 Dorking Surrey
JANE RAZELL
B: 1810, Dorking Surrey, England
C: 29 Aug 1824 Dorking, Surrey
M: James Boxall 13 April, 1828, Dorking Surrey
He married 2: Rachel Tattersall
D: 12 August 1866, St. Andrews Street, Brighton,
Victoria, AUST
John Razell
C: 28 Feb 1773 Rusper, Sussex
FA: James Razzell / Mo: Jane Hills
James Razzell C: 25 DEC 1782 Rusper, Sussex
Fa: James Razell / Mo: Maria Nightingale
James Razzell
C: 21 May 1815 Dorking Surrey
M: Harriet (bef 1837)
Hello ladywell01
Razell is an unusual name: it seems as if all the Razells are closely connected in the UK and public records go back to the early 1600's. In Rusper, Sussex, my William Razell had a brother John, which was also the name of the father of one of the Jane Razells I found. This particular "Jane" was born in Dorking; as Dorking is a matter of a few miles from Rusper, and IF this is your Jane, then it is almost certain that the two men were brothers.

If you would like, let me know the geographic area of your Jane and I can give you some more information, either here or by the email I listed.
Kind regards
trinepeterson
Not sure how it all ties in with the poet Robert Southey, but if you can enlighten me, I would love to hear how! Best regards

Hi Sara,

My great great grandmother's family was related in some way to the poet Robert Southey. Her maiden name was Henrietta Brown, and her parents were James Brown and Sarah Roberts. Do your Southey genealogy records show any connection between a Brown family and the Southeys? Some time ago, I read that Robert Southey was raised by his "Aunt Brown". Do you possess any information on this?

Thank you,

Bill

Poet Laureate Robert Southey

"The Poet Laureate Robt. Southey, the author of the Life of Nelson, was a relation." --William Temple Stevens

The above is an excerpt from my great great grandfather's memoirs in reference to my great great grandmother's relatives. My great great grandmother's maiden name was Henrietta Brown, and her parents were James Brown and Sarah Roberts.

I know this is a long shot, but I'm hoping that someone with fairly extensive genealogy records on Robert Southey may be able to help me find a connection between the Browns and the Southeys (or possibly the Roberts and the Southeys). I read somewhere that Robert Southey was raised by his "Aunt Brown" who appears to have been related to a Henry Langford Brown. I may be barking up the wrong genealogy tree.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I believe the poet Robert Southey was my great great grandfather. My grandfather, Alexander Southey, was born in Callington Cornwall 2/7/1864 the son of William John Bickel Southey (b 1828) and Margery Hoskin (b 1823 They were married Launceston 4/14/1853. William's parents may have been Henry Herbert Southey and Clara Latham. I have many gaps between the poet and my grandfather.
