Re: Southwoods in Devon England

Jane's brother was Nicholas Southwood (named after their father)and her sister-in-law Agnes Crocker.
Nicholas was a farmer/butcher and died leaving around £6000 between his wife and his children. All were to benefit in equal proportion but this meant that if the girls were paid out properly then the males who continued in the family business and suppoted Agnes would have found it difficult to continue.
Richard Chaffe, Agnes and another man were named as trustees and they ensured between then that Mary Southwood for instance had a great fight on her hands to actually see her money. After Richard Chaffe died Agnes withdrew as a trustee and the job passed to two of her sons. It took until somewhere around the 1880s for Mary's portion to be settled.
You will also have noted that Nicholas Southwood and Agnes had a daughter called Agnes Crocker Southwood. This girl married her first cousin, Richard Southwood Chaffe. No doubt 1780 Richard Chaffe ensured that young Agnes's inheritance was paid out swiftly.
The Southwoods were comfortably off but not a rich family. Most people rented land from the Bastard family of Kitley, Yealmpton, or the Bulteels at Fleet, Holbeton. It was extremely rare (basically unheard of) for anyone else to own property in this part of Devon.
The best any family could do was to take a 99 year lease.

I descend from Richard Chaffe's elder brother, Henry - hence my interest in your query. An interesting feature is that my Henry named one of his children Jenny Southwood Chaffe. This was the first child born to him and his wife after his and Richard's father's death. It suggests to me that Jane Southwood had been promised to Richard Chaffe around this time. She was something around 13 years of age and there was quite a wait for the later 1809 marriage. Richard did quite well for himself and I suspect he obtained more money from his father than my own ancestor. The Southwoods had clearly approached as soon as Richard's father was dead and so presumably something interesting came his way.
I think my Henry simply got a lease and sold it on for something like £36.
Henry was not a farmer and I presume Richard did better because he followed the family tradition. Certainly something made him attractive to the Southwoods.

Southwoods in Wayne Co. KY

I have been trying to find stuff on my family for a long while now. Most of my family originates from Wayne County, Kentucky around Monticello and Parnell. My Ggrandpa was Eskel Southwood who married Bertha Bell. My GGgrandpa is Manuel Robert Southwood who married Eva B. Smith. And my GGGgrandpa is Bolin R. Southwood who married Ruhama(or Ruhanna) but I'm not sure of her last name. I only have 3 names of children for Bolin and Ruhama and they are Manuel Robert(my GGgrandpa), Marie Southwood who married Woodrow W. Bell and Charlie N. Southwood. If anybody has any information on any of these names even if it's a distant cousin or whatnot I'd really love to know! You can email me at Angelstorms108@aol.com

I believe that I am descended as follows:

1) William Southwood - Birth 1700-1715 North Carolina (could be VA) and Susanna STRODE b: 29 May 1721 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

2) John SOUTHWOOD b: Before 1737 d: 1804.Spouse unknown- Married: Around 1757 in North Carolina. Mother: Susanna STRODE b: 29 May 1721 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

3) John SOUTHWOOD b: 1768 Caswell, NC d: 1869 Wayne Co.,KY (AKA: John Southward /Jack/, John Southard) married Sally Margaret GAINES (Sally Grimes) B 1794 Caswell, NC. They were m:10 Mar 1811 She died 1848.
I also show this John SOUTHWOOD marrying Margaret Peggy South 30 Mar 1848.

Shouldn't there be a generation between John Southwood b. 1768 and William Southwood b. 1824? If not, then John Southwood b. 1768 would have been 56 yoa when William Southwood was born in 1824.

4) William SOUTHWOOD b: 1824 in Wayne County, KY. He married Margaret Elisabeth Jenami FRANCIS 29 Sep 1849 in Wayne County, Kentucky. She was born 1833 in Kentucky.

I would like confirmation of the above, if possible.

Also, I am very interested in the pedigree of William Southwood - Birth 1700-1715.

Hi, my name is Shannon Johnson but my maiden name is Southwood. It seems as though we are in the same situation. Although, my family mystery story goes a little like this. My family orginiated in Texas and was part of a range war there. Afterwards, they fled to Kentucky and changed their last name TO Southwood. I've been trying to track down what my real last name is. If you know of any particular Southwoods from Kentucky, throw me their names and I'll let you know if I know of them. My email address is Angelstorms108@aol.com. That would be the best way to reach me.

Happy Family Hunting,
Shannon

I don't know about the murder story but my dad couldn't go back any farther on my mom's side of the family because of the whole name change. It ends with Jonathan T. Jones. All my dad found out was that he had left VA because he got into some kind of trouble and upon entering Kentucky he changed his name from Southwood to Jones. I doubt that's any help. Just wanted you to know that I'm trying to figure it all out, too, so you're not alone. lol.

Re: Harriet Southwood/ George Ireland

George Ireland was born on 5 Mary 1830 in Kenton, Devon England to George Ireland (1798) and Mary Pugslay. He was one of at least seven children.
He was counted in the 1851 census of Kenton, Devon England living with his parents and siblings. The return shows George IRELAND (52), farmer of 270 acres, 8 labourers, born Bovey, living at Mowlash. Also in residence are his wife Mary (51), born Okehampton, and unmarried children George (20), Emma (17), Henry (13), Jane (10) and Frances (7), all born Kenton, six male agricultural servants and one female house servant.

I think George (b:1830) immigrated on the City of Washington which left from Liverpool and arrived in New York on 3 June 1857. This is the only passenger record I’ve found that makes the most sense. The passenger list for the City of Washington lists: Geo Ireland, age 27, occupation Farmer.
I’m led to believe that George and Harriet knew each other in Devon. Harriet was a Librarian in Devon. Harriet immigrated 6 Oct 1857 on the Argo leaving from Bremen, Germany landing in New York. The quote from family sources is "...She came to this county in 1857 and married to George Ireland on Oct. 29 the same year. Since her husband died she has always had her home in Haldane...." I have not found any record of their marriage.
George and Harriet were shown in the 1860 census of, Ogle County, Illinois
1860 Ogle County, Brookville Township, Illinois
Dwelling 349 Family 3052
George Ireland 30 Farmer Value of real estate 300 value of personal estate 30 born England
Harriet 31 born England
Jane 1 IL

George died on 10 May 1865 in Haldane, Illinois leaving Harriet with three small children:

Jane “Jennie” Southwood Ireland b 8 Sept 1858 d: 21 Jul 1956 called “Auntie” never married kept a gigantic garden and was an inexhaustible canner and quilter. Lived in Haldane not far from the Haldane Cemetery.

Emily Mary “Emma” Ireland b 31 Dec 1861 d: 6 Dec 1951 Married Gavin Renwick Cross. Kept a large farm with her husband. Lived in Polo after he died.

Fanny Maria Ireland b 29 Aug 1864 d: 10 Dec 1950 married George Jackson. Raised by the Issac Speaker family after her father died. Lived in Toledo, Iowa.

George and Harriet had one other daughter who was born 17 Dec 1860 and died the following day.

I’m assuming these descendants hold less interest to you but I can fill in their details later if you like.

George’s (b:1830) father George Ireland (b:1798) was born in Bovey, Devon England. He was the son of Thomas Ireland and Grace French.

George (1798) and Mary Pugslay (b: circa 1800) were married 22 February 1823.
Hi Laura,
George(1830-1865) is my 1st cousin 4 times removed. I know that he emigrated to Illinois and there married Harriet Southwood (1828-1908). They had four children, Jane, Jennie, Emily & Fanny. I'm trying to discover when George emigrated to the USA and possibly on what ship. I have the narrative obituary for Harriet from the Tri County Press. Any other info would also be most welcome.
Regards
Barry

Hello Barry,
As I may have mentioned in my posting, I'm not related to George or Harriet. I just saw the piece of handwork, framed, with obituary on the back at a local "flea market" type store. I don't know if it is still there. But if you are interested in buying it, I can go check and see if it's still there.

Hi - I just read your posting and I have a Thomas Southwood, born July 1834 in Plymouth, Devon, England who migrated to Canada sometime between 1861 and 1863. He and his wife, Sarah Davey, had 2 children born in Devon, England and 2 children born in Canada. Sometime after 1865, the family moved to Ohio. Could this be the family you are look for?

Virginia (Southwood) Harwood
Camarillo, California
I am stuck at 1771 trying to trace my Southwood line back past 4th G Grandpa William Southwood. He married a Sarah Barriball of the Werrington Barriball's in 1803 but I cannot find any secure evidence to corroborate their marriage or their birth or death dates.
They had a pile of kids but I can only trace one, John Southwood born 1821 in Werrington, Devon, England and who died in 1909. He (John) married Mary Ann Bray and the Bray Southwood line began.
John had a young girl living in his household in the 1851 England Census, a Thomasine Barriball who must have been a relative of his mother, who was Sarah Barriball.
Does anyone intersect with my lot?
My Gedcom is online at http://www.davises.co.za/tree. The site is very buggy but once you are in and navigating, it works fine. Otherwise enail me and i will send you the relevant gedcoms.
Philippa

Hey Milton,
Southwood is quite a rare name but our ancestors bred like rabbits! I attached my whole Gedcom to the last post - you'll see what I mean.
My line of Southwoods in Siuth Africa descended from Walter Bray Southwood who was born in Stratton, Dorset, England, United Kingdom 20 Jul 1875. There is ample in the UK Census to support this and his siblings. I haven't started researching his Father's siblings yet but am pretty certain that it was this line of Southwoods who spread themselves far and wide through the New World.
I'll post what I find as I find and corroborate it. Maybe we get lucky. :)
Thanks for the info - its a great place to work from, forward and back.
Take care
Philippa (g dau Jessie Southwood)

Philippa,

Since I posted the message to which you responded I have learned a little more about the family, mainly through concact with a cousin, John C. Brown who has been on this site much longer than I.

The William Southwood from whom I'm descended (GGGrandfather) was born 1825 in Wayne Co KY, m. Margaret Elizabeth Jemima Francis 25 Sept. 1849. His father was:
John Southwood (also appearing as John Southard)b.1770 in Caswell Co NC, m. Sally Grimes (also appears as Sally Gaines)also from Caswell Co NC.

Caswell Co is in the far eastern part of NC, known as "East Carolina", which suggests that the first Southwoods there came from up or down the coast (possibly VA)or straight across the pond.

If you have any connection with Wayne Co Ky Southwoods, we're probably related. Southwood, after all, is a pretty rare name.

Regards

Milton Wright
mkwright70@comcast.net

I have a whole pile of Southwoods who originated in the UK right back to William Southwood B. circa 1800 and his wife, Sarah Barribal (for whom there are loads of spellings.)
Slowly but surely i am expanding my research outwards from the direct lineage so keep an eye on my tree as I update it regularly.
The Freecen and FreeBMD databases are good source information but passenger records ex UK are also handy in seeing where your line originated.
Good luck - we may very well be cousins and never have known it!
Philippa (4 ggdaughter of Wiliam Southwood)

My mother was Elsie, C N Southwood's eldest by first wife Lena Kurtz. You mentioned that your mother remembered our grandfather Charles Nelson Southwood. I have posted in various places on this site what I know about the family as well as contacting John directly. If you can direct me to anything about the family, particularly William Southwood, father of John Frisby Southwood, I'd be most appreciative.
Best regards,
Milton Wright

Milton King Wright
mkwright70@comcast.net
My GG Grandfather was a William Southwood, presumably of Monticello KY. This William married Rema Norman. I am descended from them through his son John Frisby Southwood b. 13 January 1855 m. Mary Haynes, dau. Elijah Haynes and Fannie Russell. I know nothing of this William Southwood's other children or his ancestry.

Is this the same William Southwood who would be your GG Granfather, or do you have any information that would help me make that determination?
Regards
Milton Wright
mkwright70@comcast.net

In response to your query regarding Brent C. Southwood. While on a trip in the 1960s I met Lula Southwood, aka Lou V. Southwood b. 4 November 1884 and who resided at Route 3 Box 408 Monticello KY. She gave me some information about the family. I have not researched this and cannot vouch for its accuracy, but here is what I have.

Brent Crawford Southwood, b.7 April 1878, d. 27 March 1920, was married to Ora Wilham in Danville KY. I have no informationn on their ofspring other than what you shared. His siblings were: the aformentioned Lou (or Lula); Sarah Jane b. 14 October 1875 d. 30 December 1950, m. William Johnson and had 11 children; Fannie Ellen b. 30 December 1880 d. 25 April 1909 m. Leif Turner. I also believe their brother to be my grandfather Charles Nelson Southwood b. 12 December 1886 d. March 1944 in Danville KY. He married first Lena Kurtz and had 2 children including my mother, and secondly Mary Yeakey by whom he had 5 children.

Their father was John Frisby Southwood b. 13 January 1855 m. Mary Haynes, dau. Elijah Haynes and Fannie Russell. John Frisby was the son of William Southwood and Rema Norman.

I hope this is useful information and would be eager to compare notes with you on this family.

Regards

Milton K. Wright
mkwright70@comcast.net

Milton,

Thank you for contacting me.

You are correct. My grandfather was Charles Nelson Southwood of Danville KY. My grandmother was second wife, Mary Southwood (nee Yeakey). Mary mother was a Ball. Charles Nelson and Mary's children were Mother's June, Howard, Dorothy, Jeanie, and Leonard. My mother was Dorothy Brown (nee Southwood).

All are now deceased. I would be very interested in any information that you have regarding Charles Nelson or his/ your relatives.

Best regards,

John Brown
New Fairfield, CT
brownieruf@aol.com

John Brown

Shelly, after all this time, I assume some of your questions about your grandmother have been answered, however I'll be happy to tell you what I think I know.

Sarah Jane b. 14 October 1875 d. 30 December 1950 was the daughter of John Frisby Southwood b. 13 January 1855 and his wife Mary Haynes, dau. Elijah Haynes and Fannie Russell.
If this is correct, one of her brothers was Charles Nelson Southwood b. 12 December 1886 d. march 1944 in Danville KY, who was my grandfather.

Regards,

Milton King Wright
mkwright70@comcast.net

Ancestors and Descendents of Charles Nelson Southood of Danville KY

My mother was the eldest daughter of Charles Nelson Southwood b. 12 December 1886 in Monticello KY, d. March 1944 in Danville KY. He married 1. Lena Kurtz by whom he had 2 daughters: Elsie (my mother) and Elizabeth. He married 2. Mary Yeakey and had 5 children: June (Charles Nelson, Jr.?), Howard, Dorothy, Clara Jean (later known as Jeannie), and Leonard.

Charles Nelson was a son of John Frisby Southwood b. 13 January 1855 of Monticello and his wife Mary Haynes, dau. Elijah Haynes and Fannie Russell. John Frisby's other children are possibly: Brent Crawford, Lou (or Lula), Sarah Jane, and Fannie Ellen.

Although I have not verified this, John Frisby Southward's father's parents are said to be William Southwood and Rema Norman, probably of Monticello. I have no further information on William or earlier Southwoods in our line. I am eager to correspond with anyone who can fill me in on William Southwood or who has any idea about his ancestors and origins.

Regards

Milton K.
You refer to a William Southwood as being in your line. As tenuous as such a connection might be, I am probably descended from a William Southwood, probably of Monticello Ky. If this is the same William,he had a son John Frisby Southwood whose son Charles Nelson Southwood b. Monticello, d. Danville, the eldest daughter of whom is my mother, Elsie Southwood Wright.

My interest is that we have no record of the Southwood line beyond William.

If you have any evidence that we are talking about the same William Southwood and if you have any knowledge of his parentage or any other information about the line, I should be interested in knowing.

Regards

Milton Wright
mkwright70@comcast.net

My mother was Elsie Southwood, eldest daughter of Charles Nelson Southwood and his first wife Lena Kurtz. Charles Nelson lived in Danville KY and was a contractor and owner of C N Southwood Hardware. He was originally from Montecello KY, and I am told his father was John Frisby Southwood (probably named after the obstetrician John Frisby who left his home in Connecticut to practice in KY and whose home I saw while I was a student at Yale).

Beyond this, I know little about the origins of the Southwood family except for a few stories told me one afternoon by one Lula Southwood near Montecello KY where I visited on a vacation trip while I was a student in the early sixtys.

Your site contains several responses from the son of my mother's half sister, a Mr. Brown, whom I have never met.

If you have any information on the origins of the Southwood family in KY or know of anyone who might, I would be very interested in knowing.

Best regards,

Milton

Milton King Wright
mkwright70@comcast.net

Presumably your grandfather was Charles Nelson Southwood of Danville KY. My mother was his eldest daughter by his first wife Lena Kurtz. His second wife, whom I remember from when I was a child was named Mary. Mother's half siblings were June, Howard, Dorothy, Jeanie, and Leonard. I knew all except Leonard (whom we knew as "Uncle Henry").

Milton Wright
