Deborah,
I'm very pleased to see someone doing serious research on this line. I quite agree with you that the Southworth line in America cannot be connected yet with the "illustrious" line in England. We do have DNA samples from men who descend from Constant. These seem to be related somewhat distantly to several other men whose origins seem to be in Virginia and North Carolina, but their paper trails do not go back to an immigrant ancestor. It would be very helpful if more Southworth men from England and America would join the Southworth DNA Project www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/southworth-southard.

Doris Wheeler

Hi and thank you for replying!

I fully intend to upgrade the DNA test to a 67 as soon as I can.

This is my page for Green W. Southard at my website, http://katscelticroots.com/fam00156.htm I descend from his youngest child, William Turner Southard.

Have you heard of anyone in your database having been hospitalized at Mammoth Cave? About a year ago when talking to my Aunt Katherine Southard Jones she said she remembered something about the Southards going into Georgia through Kentucky because someone they knew (or were kin to) was at Mammoth Cave for TB. I went there last year and got a listing of all the known patients there, but no one jumped out at me.

Thank you!
Katherine Southard Reece

Just an update for anyone who might stumble across this discussion, with regard to the "illustrious" Southworth line. While this line is intact down to Thomas and Rosamond (Lister) Southworth, and is, in fact, a Royal Line, there is a *break in the line* between this couple and the Edward Southworth of Leiden and Holland, who was married to Alice Carpenter. Edward Southworth is *not* of proven Royal lineage to date.
See my post dated May 8, 2012 for further information.
Regards,
Deborah Southworth Sweet

Edward Southworth of Leiden & London - Date of Death

DATE OF DEATH for Edward Southworth of London & Leiden:
Edward's dod appears in many people's family trees, variously as 1620, 1621, bef. 1622, and even, ridiculously, 1623. Some have his place of death as Leiden, Holland, however this cannot be the case as per Cushman's letter of Aug. 1620 to his friend Edward Southworth, living at Heneage House, Duke Place, LONDON.
In fact, Edward was most likely dead before the Fortune set sail for Plymouth on August 9, 1621. How else would have Bradford known of Alice's widowhood in time to send a letter to her by way of the ONLY POSSIBLE ship, and then have HER come to Plymouth on again, the ONLY POSSIBLE ship?
The Fortune arrived at Plymouth Nov. 9, 1621, unloading 35 new colonists, a few supplies, and most importantly of all, telling the news of London, including the death of Edward Southworth.
There is no doubt that Bradford had to have sent a letter TO Alice, back on the Fortune when the Fortune made her return voyage to England Dec. 3, 1621, for Alice arrived in Plymouth with the *next* set of ships, aboard the Anne (arr. w/the Little James) in 1623.
As these were the ONLY ships of record to have gone between England and the Plymouth Colony, the timeline MUST be that Edward Southworth died, sometime between Robert Cushman's Aug. 17, 1620 letter, and the departure of the 'Fortune' on Aug. 9, 1621.
I therefore place Edward Southworth's date of death as:
BETWEEN 8/17/1620 and 8/9/1621, *probably* in London, though the place is NOT proven. I carry the place of death as "Heneage House" as this the last place of record he is known to be at.
Heneage House was a hotbed of Dissenter's activity. It may be that Edward was living there, for by this time it had become a boarding house, and William Bradford was also living in the same *area* though not at Heneage. It could also have simply been the place where he picked up his mail, and not where he was living.
If anyone has a better estimate, please let us all know!
Deborah Southworth Sweet

Edward Southworth - NOT a Proven Royal Line!

I am always amazed at how "possible" or "probably" or "believed to be" somehow turn into "IS," in genealogy, which supposedly prides itself on documentation and proof.
Although I have posted on this before, I guess the smell of royalty is just too much for some people, and they refuse to let go of a connection which is tenuous at best.
So - I am again posting all of the latest research about this supposed Royal connection in the hopes that at least *some* of you will take notice and make the necessary changes and notations to indicate that this is not a proven line. Carry the line IF YOU MUST, but at least note that it is NOT PROVEN, so as not to confuse and mislead others!

The following is from my own personal research notes. If you quote, please give credit, both to myself and to the others whom I quote. I have been researching the Southworth line for forty years.:

ORIGINS Of Edward Southworth: The link between Thomas & Rosamond (Lister) Southworth with their *possible* son, Edward Southworth, is inadequately supported though it has been called "Probable" for many years. In those many years, no one has found any proof, nor even a good preponderence of evidence that, our Edward was the son of Thomas & Rosamond. I cannot stress enough the word - probable - as there is a break in the line here for which NO DOCUMENTATION has been found which would PROVE the lineage back in time. Although it is carried in RD600, there are those who feel that Gary Boyd Roberts should have dropped the line from this latest book due to the lack of documentation.

--"Burke's American Families with British Ancestry" - Repr., Genealogical Pub. Co., Inc. Baltimore; orig. pub. 1939; 1996; ISBN #0-8063-0662-9. 'This work is an offprint of pages 2529-3022 of the 16th edition of Burke's Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed
Gentry, London, 1939, constituting, in entirety, the innovative American section.' pp.2919, 2920:
"Lineage - Edward Southworth, BELIEVED to be descended from the Southworths of Samlesbury Hall, Lancs, joined the Pilgrim Colony in Leyden[sic], Holland, but, through ill-health, was unable to accompany his friends on the Mayflower to Plymouth, Massachusetts; b.ca. 1590; m. at Leyden[sic], Holland, 28 May 1613, Alice Carpenter..."

--"Ancestral Roots of Certain American Colonists Who Came to America before 1700" - 7th ed. by Frederick Lewis Weis; Genealogical Pub. Co., Inc., Baltimore; 1950-1999; ISBN #0-8063-1367-6; This work contains the complete 'Royal Descent' of the Southworth Line, with a caveat re: the parentage of Edward Southworth, as follows: p.13; Line 9, entry 40 & 41:
40. THOMAS SOUTHWORTH, eldest son and heir...m. ROSAMOND LISTER...The will of Sir William Lister...mentions the testator's son-in-law, Thomas Southworth, as the son of Sir John Southworth...Thomas Southworth had become a Protestant by 1584, for which reason his father, Sir John, a moderate Catholic, threatened to disinherit him...The son was living in London in 1584; both father and son had returned to Samlesbury in 1594. [interesting to note that he uses Samuel Webber's Southworth Genealogy as one of his references.]
41. EDWARD SOUTHWORTH, youngest son of Thomas and Rosamond (Lister] Southworth, b. London, 1590, living 1602, but d. bef. 1622.(THE ONLY SUPPORT FOR THE CONNECTION BETWEEN GENERATION 41 and 42 IS IN THE COINCIDENCE OF DATES AND NAMES. EDWARD OF LEYDEN MAY OR MAY NOT BE THE SAME MAN AS EDWARD OF LONDON. THE LINE IS INADEQUATELY SUPPORTED AT THIS POINT). [The parens. are as they appear in the book, but I have capitalized for emphasis]

--Gary Boyd Roberts, in his "The Royal Descent of 500 Immigrants" notes on p. 245 (Lesser Additions & Corrections), and on p. 663 that "An alternative Nottinghamshire origin for Edward Southworth of Leyden is suggested in "The Mayflower Quarterly" 58(1992): 10-15."
To be noted, however, is that Gary Boyd Roberts continues to carry the line in his newest book, RD600, with the notation that "Clinching proof (or disproof) that Edward Southworth, son of Thomas Southworth and Rosamond Lister, was the Leyden Pilgrim of that name would be welcome. An alternative Nottinghamshire origin for Edward Southworth is suggested in "The Mayflower Quarterly" 58 (1992): 10-15.

--Some info on the Nottingham question, which seems to NOT have played out:
"English Origins of New England Families From The New England Historical and Genealogical Record" 2nd Series, Vol. III; Selected & Introduced by Gary Boyd Roberts; Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore (1985); LCCCN 84-81872; ISBN 0-8063-1094-4; p. 281
"Southworth Pedigree: Discussion of the line of the New England Southworths (Constant and Edward), and how it is NOT related to the royal Southworth line, as erroneously given in Winsor's "History of Duxbury."
Winsor's pedigree is, however "a correct copy of "Herald's Visitation" down to Henry and Thomas Southworth, who were living in 1623. This was furnished by me to a member of the family who, without authority, appended the name of Constant Southworth and others of New England. I HAVE SINCE TRACED THE AMERICAN BRANCH OF THE SOUTHWORTHS TO A REMOTE PERIOD IN ENGLAND. (my caps). No connection whatever is found with the family in the pedigree above mentioned."
The above was written by Mr. Horatio Gates Somerby, Esq. (keep reading)

"Southworth (ibid, vol. 51, p. 496) - In answer to Mary L.T. Alden, in October number - Edward Southworth, the pilgrim, was in Leyden in 1611 and 1613, and so could not have been the Edward in Nottinghamshire in 1614. There are some mistakes in the line as given in Winsor's history of Duxbury..."
___________________
[Some years before his death, Mr. Horatio Gates Somerby informed me[note, the "me" does not refer to myself, Deborah Sweet] that the pedigree of Southworth in Winsor's Duxbury was not printed as he furnished it to the family. He did furnish a pedigree, but some one altered it before printing. In the pedigree he furnished he did not connect the Plymouth settlers with it. I presume that Mr. Somerby's genealogical papers, which were left to the Massachusetts Historical Society, will show what he did furnish the Southworth family. He complained of other clients who, in printing matter furnished by him, had made him responsible for mistakes he never made. Mr. Somerby died at London, Nov. 14, 1872, in his 67th year. See sketch in the Register, vol. 28, pp. 340-342. - John Ward Dean.]"

To sum up:
Burke's Peerage - "Believed to be"
Weis - "Inadequately supported"
Roberts - "Clinching proof or disproof would be welcome"
Somersby - "NO CONNECTION" - Constant Southworth was added without authority

Hope this helps reduce the amount of false information circulating and re-circulating, though I don't have a lot of faith. I've been trying to get people to understand this for *years* without much success. It's like spitting into the wind. I've actually had people be quite nasty about it.

So Please - it is not my *fault* that your royal line is broken/unproven. I'd appreciate it if this posting doesn't prompt a flood of negativity. I am trying to *Help* you, after all.
Regards to All Southworths -
Deborah Southworth Sweet

Please note that there is NO PROVEN ROYAL LINEAGE for Edward Southworth of London & Leiden, whose sons Constant and Edward came to America.
Even Gary Boyd Roberts, in his NEWER book, "Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants" notes on p. 245 (Lesser Additions & Corrections), and on p. 663 that "An alternative Nottinghamshire origin for Edward Southworth of Leyden is suggested in "The Mayflower Quarterly" 58(1992): 10-15."

ALL reliable sources, including Roberts, Horatio Gates Somersby, Webber, Frederick Lewis Weis, Burke's Peerage, etc. - *all* say the line is either "inadequately supported" or "Believed to be" etc.
Once again, this is NOT a proven Royal line.
See my next post, May 8, 2012, "Edward Southworth NOT a Royal Line" where I will put all of the proper citations and quotes.
Deborah Southworth Sweet

Hi y'all.

I had my brother do a 37 marker DNA test for the Southard/Southworth project.

My last known ancestor was Green W. Southard, a most annoying man, who was born abt 1811 in either NC or VA (his birth state changes on his census), he married Sarah Ann (maiden unknown) and moved into Georgia in time for the 1840 census where he was listed as Green Sutherland.

Is there anyone on the board who specializes in the line of Constant Southworth? Do you know any of his descendants who went south?

Hello Carol,
I am also a descendant of William Southworth Goodwin, through his eldest daughter Emma. You are, I see, descended from Helen, her sister. I have done quite a bit of research on my Southworth ancestors - much of it is available over the internet, as they were a very prominent and fascinating family. William's wife was Mary Ann Howard who died in 1891. Emma, married name McDonough, had a short tragic life, dying in childbirth in 1914. Helen, your ancestor, stood as Godmother to several of her children. Hannah Southworth Goodwin's father William Southworth, invented a machine for drying cotton, but was declared bankrupt in 1830's or 40's. I would be glad to share what I have with you. Do you have any info on Helen, Emma or their brother Frederick, who died young. I have a bit, which I will share with you if you email me. Regards, Colin McDonough.

It seems as though we probably have two Richard Southworth's born around the same time. This is by no means unusual. My great Grandfather John was born in Mawdesley in 1850 and his orphaned cousin also John, also born around 1850 lived in the same house for a time.
Happy hunting,
Margaret (nee Southworth)

Hi Jim,
I have a Richard Southworth born 1825 in my tree. He was born in Longton. His parents were John Southworth and Elizabeth Crook not Ann so this may not be your Richard. I am descended from his sister Margaret who married another Southworth (Ralph) and began a Southworth tribe in Mawdesley.

Saint John Southworth is said to be the son of Sir John Southworth and Mary Asheton. The history of this family is well covered in a book by Samuel G. Webber, a Genealogy of the Southworths. Unfortunately, there has been much confusion as to whether the Southard and Southworth names are interchangeable. All evidence to date using DNA testing seems to point to the fact that they were not related, despite the claims of many authors and genealogists. Please see www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/southworth.

I have a letter that indicates that John had diaries written by his gfather Henry James Southworth. They contained entries from 1876 to 1878 when he lived with Henry D. and Eliza J. Southworth in Gasport, Niagara, NY. His male line is John Oscar - ? - Henry James - Henry D. - Oscar H. - Henry D. My line is Joseph Henry Owen - Joseph Henry Owen Southworth - Owen D. Southworth - Henry D. Southworth and (Eliza J.) I am trying to find who the elder Henry D's father was. The letter indicates John was looking at Wheaton Southworth.I suspect the Wheaton he mentions is a grandson of Wheaton and Martha Gifford Southworth. I would love to see the diaries.

Can anyone identify for me the family of Perlie Minerva Pierce in this context? I have a Benjamin Pierce m. to Sarah Southworth and settling in Sussex Co., NJ "in an early day." I understand that the Southworths were in the Wantage, Sussex Co., NJ area as early as 1751. Many from the area migrated to the Finger Lakes in Ontario Co., NY, which was adjacent to Livingston Co. before Yates Co. was carved out of it. Might these Southworths have come from NJ? Thanks for any assistance.

Hello,

I do not know the answer to your question. However, I would like to ask you if you have information on Benjamin Pearce and his wife, Sarah Southworth, of near Duck Pond, Mt. Pochuck, near Vernon, Sussex Co., NJ. I believe my Pearce family is related to his. This couple may have had a daughter, Susannah, who died. The wife and dau. are buried at the Clove Baptist Church Cem., Wantage. I suspect my family of Pearces have persons buried there, and may have married there but I can find no records.

I am trying to identify the parents there of Willis and Jonathan Pearce who resided in the area until about 1804. Thank you for any help.

Achilles Southworth was a soldier in the confederate army serving in Captain Thornton's Company Virginia Light Artillery. Information on Thornton's Company has been published on the internet. There is a considerable amount of information there on Achilles Southworth including the name of his father James B. Southworth who died in Franklin County, Missouri in 1845. His mother was Agnes Anne Burnette. A simple search of James B. Southworth on the internet will turn up a lot of good information about Agnes Burnette's family. I hope this info will help.

I would like to find out more about Dixon Southworth's parents, Beriah Southworth and Sally Olmstead.

I have seen the Sally Southworth tombstone on Find A Grave. Have also been researching William Southworth and the New England Planters connection. The information linking William Southworth and Beriah Southworth is somewhat circumstantial: Beriah shows in the census as born in Canada; he migrates to 2 locations in NY. Also, no death records for either William, or his wife, Isabel Copp.

Dixon was my third-great grandfather on my mother's side via adoption of my mother by a Southworth, part of Dixon's line from Tioga County, PA (Dixon, Charles, Frank, Ivan-my grandfather).

Any information is appreciated.

Judy McCreedy
jmccreedy@ameritech.net

Hi Cindy,

Still working on my Adair/Southworth family tree and I am trying to connect with Kathy who also posted information. She mentioned finding a William Adair and Mary E White who were married on 12-19-1837 in Scott County. Would you have any additional information or know how I can contact Kathy.

Thanks,
Patricia

I am looking for anyone who has information on Henry James Southworth born in Missouri and later lived in Nebraska. I believe he had a diary that covered when he lived with
Henry D. and Eliza Moore Southworth in NY after his parents deaths. I am descended from them.
