If you are still on ancestry.com, I am hoping you might be able to give me some information about your mother's side of the family. My grand-father was Eunice Sowell, I believe he should have been your brother. I have been able to trace his father's side some, but have not found anything on your mother's side. Anything would help.

Thanks,
Gene Hays

Richard Sowell, born 1723-1728 of Bertie County, NC and wife Sarah

Looking for parents of Richard Sowell born 1723 or 1728 (depending what tree you are looking at) in Bertie County, NC. He died April 1781 in Bertie Co, NC. He married Sarah
(maiden name not known) who died 1785. Oldest son William, was executor of the estate according to abstract(which has lead some people to believe he was her husband) Buyers for Sarah's estate were William Sowell, Thomas Sowell and Dempsey Sowell among others not named Sowell. I have been told (without offering proof) that his father's name was Thomas Sowell, the son of Richard Sowell and Martha Oliver. The dates on other family trees I have seen for Thomas Sowell's puts him in the same generation as Richard Sowell.
Can any one tell me who Richard Sowell's parents were? Please give me proof on why you came to the conclusion. I believe I descend from Richard's son, Dempsey.

I honestly do not know if Sowell is her maiden or married name. All the pictures show only Erna with my mom and her sisters. No pictures of husband, which makes me think it may be her maiden name. I wish I could help more but unfortunately my mom and all her sisters have passed away. The Shelby Co. website has a ton of information with funeral home listings of those passed away, cemeteries listing the gravestone information, and also bride and groom listings. The website is www.shelbycountytexashistory.org
Good luck in your research.
Elizabeth Houghton
(Oates, Finklea, Brandt, & Taylor)

Some dates look off re: Thomas (1630), Charles (d.1738), and Richard (1654-1727). Those dates would leave only a 24 year age difference between Thomas and his grandson Richard.
It seems more likely that Richard was Thomas' son and Charles' brother. Otherwise, Thomas would have had to have sired Charles when he was around 12 and Charles would have had to have sired Richard when he was around 12.

Hello. My grandmother, Alma Sowell, was a daughter of Arnold H. Sowell, also a son of Abijah Lewis Sowell. That was in my grandmothers bible. Priscilla Cobb was not listed. We have been looking for information and have found your post. What can you tell me about Priscilla Cobb? When I saw your post, I tried to find Priscilla Cobb on the earlier censuses. But, we are not having any luck. Any information would be appreciated.

The can tell you little statistical things about Martha. However I can tell you that she was the only mother my G-father ever knew and he loved her very much. She loved him like he was her own. The best part is I actually have a pic of Martha sitting in a rocking chair on her front porch when she was very old. I will find it and send it to you if you do not have it.
As for Josephine, my Gmother called her Josie. I know she moved away and they wrote letters to stay n touch I don't remember anything else about her. Maybe the nickname will help. How do you want me to send the pic?
Sonya Stringer Dailey

Hi. I read your post about the David B. Sowell family and the cemetery. I am very interested in knowing anything else you can recall about Martha, David's second wife. Martha Woodle Faircloth Sowell is my great-great grandmother. She was married to David Faircloth and they had three daughters. David Faircloth died and then she married David Bullock Sowell. The only thing I know about David Faircloth is that he was in the Civil War and quite a bit older than Martha. They lived in Winn & Sabine Parish, LA in 1860, 1870 & 1880.

The three daughters:

Nancy Emma Faircloth was the oldest and my great grandmother. She married John J. Sowell in LA and had 4 children. John left her in Nacogdoches Cnty, TX and took his oldest son to LA. My grandfather and his sister and a baby were left behind with their mother. The baby died of starvation. John J. Sowell was born in MS to William H. Sowell & Mary A. F. Leezor. Apparently, Mary Leezor Sowell died in Nacogdoches Cnty, TX because later William H. Sowell married Rhoda Marie Lloyd in Nacogdoches Cnty, TX in 1864. Their first child was born in TX and then before 1870 they moved to Sabine Parish, LA.

The middle child was Amanda/Amy - I have not been able to find anything about her.

The baby was Josephine. Josephine lived with Martha & David B. Sowell in 1900 & 1910 according to the San Augustine Cnty, TX census. She married Thomas Jackson Lowery in 1917. Josephine is buried in the Sowell Cemetery.

Would love to hear anything you might remember about Martha and/or Josephine.

I just discovered this post about the Sowell family. I can answer the question about what happened to The wives of David Bullock Sowell. My grandfather was Boss (Narhannon) Sowell and the cemetery caretaker in the Trailer was my Uncle. Papaw said that there was a cholera outbreak in 1880 which claimed the lives of Ransom,Will(iam),Silas & Alfred.Harriet was also ill and never recovered her health. My G-pa Boss (Narhannon) was born in 1889 and this seemed to be the last strain her health could take. She passed away less than a year later. The only female in the house was Aunt Jerome who was 9 at the time and Papaw was a baby. Supposedly conntacts were made through the community and Martha Faircloth was found, a 47 yr old woman who was never married and had no children I guess they met each others needs and they married. This is the story passed from Aunt Jerome to Papaw (Boss)to his wife Sarah Frances who told it to me. OH! The children who died of cholera were buried immediately in an attempt to control spread of the disease and at least one internment was done during the night by torch light.
This is totally word of mouth and is possibly erred in places but I know my grandmother told it for the truth more than once. She and my Papaw were the caretakers for that cemetery for about 20 yrs. It is on the original tract of land where my mother was raised.

Richard Henry Sowell married Mary Ann Nancarrow in 1868 at Camborne, Cornwall. They appear to have had 2 boys born before the 1871 census of England, Richard and William.
What happened to this family? They may have gone to America.

Mary Ann Nancarrow was my Great Grandfather's sister.
On one census Mary Ann is named as Marian, but it is the only time she is recorded as such.

Jen

Some believe he died there, while others believe he died in Georgia. Does anyone have any proof, one way or the other? I can't find any hard data. There is also the possibility that he married Kitie Muse and a woman named Polly. I'm seeking clairification. Thanks

Jason Sowell (1834-1869) and Anna Peil Sowell (1843-1920) were married in Pulaski County, Arkansas. Their first child was Catherine who was born in 1864. Catherine (Katie) married my great grandfather, Oscar Clifton Chisum (1860-1924). Oscar built the Chisum House, in Little Rock, AR. I am trying to trace back from Oscar. He states (via census) that he was born in either Arkansas or Tennessee. He also states that his parents were born in both Arkansas and Tennessee. I would love to contact anyone related to Jason, Anna or Catherine. Also, if anyone has any info on Oscar, please contact me. My research had hit a stone wall at this point.
Alfred Sowell, born 1800, perhaps in NC?

I've been able to trace my father's line to William H. Sowell (1822-1906) and according to ancestry.com his father's name was Alfred Sowell (1800-1827) - there are no public records to be found, but it does list his death to be in Paris, Tennessee and that he was married to Nancy R. Edmondson (who it looks like remarried a few years after his death). When looking at the Census records for William H. Sowell (Alfred's son) it states that his father was born in North Carolina.

Any information would be of great help!

Gary, I may be wrong about James Sowell being buried at Myrtle Springs Cemetery. I'm sorry about that. But James
Sowell's son G.W. (George Washington Sowell) is buried there. I'm sorry for the mistake. George's wife, Ann Sowell is buried there. There are also some Perkins buried there that are related too I believe. Richard may be able to help you with the names.
If you will send me your email address, I will be glad to send your cousin, Richard's email address. He said he might be able to help.

The last time I made a trip to Myrtle Springs Cemetery, I got stung by a black wasp on my right little finger. Boy those things hurt. It swelled my right arm all the way up to the elbow. I haven't been back since.

Joyce

Thank you VERY much, in fact; my wife and kids are driving up to Myrtle Springs cemetary today to take some pictures of headstones.
This has been a very long road for me, mainly because my mother and her family have been very tight-lipped about my father for years.
God Bless,
Gary and family
