Hugh Sparks was my Grandfather, I have a lot of information on him, I cannot find any information on Hattie Ament, I don't know where you got the name Hardin, I would like to know about that. Her stepmother was named Minnie, but I have not been able to find out her real mother's name. You are welcome to look at my family tree, it has a lot of information on it. My family tree is Berneathy family tree, it is public.

Still searching for Mollie Sparks' family. I was wrong about her age: she was born in May 1885 so would have been 15 in the 1900 census. Her mother was born in Ireland so I assume her mother's maiden name would have been Burke. So many Sparks in Kentucky, and my eyes are burning from searching through every census record! I need to find out who her mother was.

Hi this is kinda late. I just recently started to trace my family history. I found a paper among my grandmothers things, and it has her mothers family record, her mother, father, grandparents, aunts, uncles and even great grandparents names.

My grandmothers name is Dorotha Lange Poole, her parents were Amanda Carolyn Sparks Lange and Hermann Lange. I found Amanada's parents were Robert Thomas Sparks and Ruth Isabell Collins Sparks. Roberts parents are listed as Stephen (John Stephen) Sparks and Elizabeth Levi Sparks. I found that John Stephen's parents were Walter Sparks and Susan Prewett Sparks. Walter's parents were James and Catherine Sparks and finally James' parents were Richard Sparks and Charity Applegate. So it seems that we share James and Catherine Sparks as common ancestors.

I find this so interesting, as I've never been able to trace a family line back this far. I'm just starting to do research on this and I found all this online in a few hours. I've found several helpful websites that contain a lot of the information I found here:

I have traced plenty of 'Sparks' ancestors back to Ireland, specifically Kilkenny City, County Kilkenny Ireland. Rootsireland.ie is pretty good source. I have many Sparks ancestors who were baptised in St. Canice's Well in Kilkenny City and married in St. John's or St. Mary's in Kilkenny County. Here are some of the ancestors:

James Sparks and Alice "Elsie" Welsh are the furthest I can go back to. Their children were:

Judith (1782- ),
Margaret(1783- ),
John (1784- ),
James (1787 - ),
Thomas (1787- 1867).

Thomas Sparks married Anastatia Quinlan in February of 1823 (St. Canice's Parish).

Their children were:

Margaret (1826 - ),
Michael (1829 - ),
Catherine (1830 - ),
James (1832 - ),
Patrick (1835 - ),
Thomas (1836 - 1902),
Philip (1838 - 1891),
Mary (1840 - ),
Joseph (1843 - 1878),
Teresa (1845 - ).

Michael, James, Patrick, Thomas, Philip, Mary and Joseph all migrated to America in the late 1860's with mom Anastatia. The older siblings likely were married and had families therefore stayed. The migration likely happened after the death of father and husband Thomas.

Joseph married Anastatia Cahill on 1868 in New York City after arriving.

I am trying to locate a Lynn SPARKS (maiden name) married name McCall. Her husband's name is Robert and one of their children is Russell Ian., born I believe July 1960. Lynn's mother's maiden name was HOWES and her grandmother's name was Florence Howes married to William. Florence's maiden name was Gardner. Lynn and her parents resided in Toronto in the 1940's, in the Oakwood-St. Clair Avenue area.

Hi Mike. Did you receive any information in response to your post? The father of Isaac Sparks Sr. (b. abt. 1740) still seems to be a big mystery. I have seen the references you mention to Thomas. I have also seen several recent references to Isaac Sparks Sr. potentially being a son of William Sample Sparks. I'm not sure the basis of this latter information but there may be something to it given the common use of the "Isaac" and "William" names in that line of Sparkses as well as the geographic similarity in North Carolina where William Sample Sparks relocated his family in the mid 1700s to the location where other early Kentucky families once lived. Like you, I would certainly be very interested in any information any one has on the ancestors of Isaac Sparks Sr. Bob

I have the marriage certificate of Sophia SPARKS and Edward William TEDEN. I am tracing the TEDEN family line and am a little confused by this one as I have no idea who these 2 are or how they fit my tree (if at all).

Sophia's age is given as 38 in Aug 1887 with condition as "Widow" and father's name James KEITH (dec'd). Edward was 36 at time of marriage and his occupation was General Dealer. He was a bachelor and son of Edward TEDEN.

If anyone knows about anything about these people or thinks they may be related to them, then please please contact me as I would love to crack this mystery which is bothering me, my aunt and cousin!

Good news -- the surname SPARKS comes originally from the Scandinavian name SPARKR. Sparkr referred to a person who was characterized to be a lively individual. The name went from Scandinavia to the British Isles (Scotland/England mostly) and was anglicized into the current form SPARKS.

Maybe your German line originally came from Scandinavia -- it's only a hop, skip and a jump away. As a matter of fact, Denmark and Germany are connected on the peninsula of Jutland.

They had two sons who were Charlie Sparks (Jun 16, 1884.) Surry County, North Carolina.) - (Jun 7, 1958.) Elkin, Surry County, North Carolina.) and _____ Sparks (18__.) Surry County, North Carolina.) - (19__.) Unknown/Somewhere out west.).

Charlie Sparks married Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzy" Lyon (1886.) North Carolina.) - (19__.) Surry County, North Carolina.) on Jan 05, 1909 in Alleghany County, North Carolina. They had two sons, William Earnest Sparks (Sep 18, 1910.) Elkin, Surry County, North Carolina.) - (Aug, 1971.) Fries, Grayson County, Virginia.) and Von Delos Sparks (Sep 27, 1912.)
