Thanks for your response. I don't believe we are talking about the same person. I am looking for information on James Sparrow. As near as I can tell he didn't have any children by the name of William. He did have a grandson by that name, but he was not killed in WWI. I am trying to get the marriage information for James Sparrow (b. 1 Dec 1824 in Walpole, Suffolk) and Martha Bussey (baptized 17 Jul 1814 in Hemblington, Norfolk.

Cynthia & Parthenia Medlock were sisters and they wed Sparrow brothers, right? And earlier, the Hanks sisters had wed two Sparrow brothers...Kind of cute.

I wonder if someone can find out the wagon train records since the families migrated from Virginia to Kentucky to Indiana and then Illnois I think? Or something like that? Tax records, wagon train records, maybe? I know one genealogist talked about wagon trains and being able to see who traveled with who...In the sense that if you can't find one person look who their neighbors or wagon train compadres were?

Was there a Sparrow sister, too? I saw one website that has a sister, the rest were brothers.

I believe I have sent you both an email, so please look for that, if you would. Thanks.

Hey Sara,

I wasn't sure this was you until I checked your tree. I am glad you are back. I am sorry about your father.

I am still here in IL and still working on familt trees. I have not done Sparrows for a while until just recently when I made an Akright connection and now RollerPoodle.

James and John were brothers, sons of Peter. James died somewhere in MO and I think John stayed in KY. Did I get that from you? James was the one who married Cynthia Medlock.

Thelma Martin

Hello cousin!

would love to know any of it, I didn't know we had a wild march hare in the family...I did find a lot of Sparrow names on the IL online database. Strangely Pike county does not find the same certificates as are listed as being there at the database. (I'm thinking it will take a dedicated in person effort, which I will do, one day, if no one has, if I ever move there.)

Is any more known about Peter/Henry/Thomas/James Sparrow's father? I was reading a book in which Dennis Hanks gave interviews and he said their father is Thomas but I have their father as James Wright Sparrow and their GRANDfather as Thomas Wright Sparrow.

I've tried to find more about the family when they were in Virginia and can't. Dennis Hanks said they came from England to Virginia at the same time as the Hanks family did. Then they all went to Kentucky if memory serves? Anyway what did they do in Virginia? Is any more known than names and dates? Just nothing else online...

Oh thank you so much for any insight or help.

Dear Cousins,
I have been away from researching the family for a few years, but I have researched a fair amount on Peter. It would be on my public tree Sparrow/Peckham family tree. The James Sparrow you have listed sounds similar to the John that I am descended from, and because he was a wild one, we have not been able to pinpoint where he died. This John was not married to Cynthia if I remember correctly. I also have old newspaper clippings from relatives about the Sparrow/Hanks connection.

I think you have to make a tree and then put photos on each person's page. I don't know of a way to add photos without a tree. The trees come first on the site. The photos are a way to fill out the tree and for others to as well.

It's against rules to download stuff but it's OK just letting you know for the future. I don't mind since I told you about the photo. And you are obviously in the same family. =)

By the way since you say Peter Sparrow lived to 1880 and past age 100 I searched Sparrow surname on IL govt database online for marriages.

I find a Peter Sparrow who wed a Mrs Jane West it says

1852-07-05 (volume) I (page) 175 Pike (county)

So maybe he got married again and that is why he was not on the 1860 census with William and family. Maybe he and his new wife moved somewhere else who knows.

Many Sparrows came up, including more than one Henry, John, James. Many Williams also.

Wow I did not know that. Never heard that. I wonder that wasn't in the local papers? I bet it was in one of the local papers?

I did not find much about him in the Quincy newspaper archives but who knows. Maybe it was in another local paper.

I will have to work up a list of people to look for when I have a little rest, if that is what you meant - graves to look for? I have different branches farmed in Pike county and a lot in Adams county also, but I will pick a few main things to look for.

Any help is welcome. If I can help you I will also. I just found some things in a book tonight about the Hanks Sparrow Lincoln connection. It outright says Henry Sparrow was Nancy's mother, that makes him Lincoln's grandfather by blood if so, no one disputes the marriage just the bloodlines.

PS If Peter Sparrow lived that long I wonder if he didn't go into the Soldiers & Sailors Home in Adams county which might mean he would be buried there. I don't know if he was in any war but I know some of the Sparrow men were in the Rev. War.

Hello kid_kuz. Thank you for your reply.

I have a lot of ancestors from Barry, Pike county, Illinois. I have not had luck at all in getting certificates from the county court house there. I waited months and they only sent two and I know there must be many more.

I hear most of the old family cemeteries are grown over, and stones fallen down etc. I would sure like to get those cleared and sorted out if possible, if anyone has any ideas how. I am told my relatives who worked on the tree in decades past (who I just found out about this past year to be honest) wanted the same thing. The one I am thinking of sadly passed away this year before I could meet her.

Would love anything at all on any of the Pike county people. I do have public trees. The "Hastings public view" tree is one where some Pike county people are on, and the "Easley tree" has some Sparrows on it also. I put a lot of stuff on my private tree because that is where I put anything I find, whether I have proven it yet or not. I've tried to be cautious with public trees as I don't want to steer anybody wrong.

That would be great to have land records for any Sparrow or anyone else if you can find them. In the 1850 census Peter Sparrow is residing with his son William and his wife Parthenia and their offspring. The location is listed as:

Township 4 S 5 W, Pike county, Illinois

If you wanted to look for his last known address that might be it. Peter does not show up in the 1860 census that I know of.

I mean to upload some bits and pieces about the Sparrows and Hanks (I'm not related to Hanks but as you know they wed some Sparrows) in the coming week, that I found in a newspaper archive.

I'm descended from William Sparrow who wed Parthenia Medlock (Cynthia's sister), and their daughter Sarah Jane Sparrow. She wed an Easley.

I am told by Sarah Jane's grandson, Courtney, that Peter Sparrow could possibly be buried in Benville, Brown county IL, or in Adams county near Richfield IL. But he is not sure. He said some county records were destroyed in a fire. He said those old cemeteries are in disrepair.

They were all farmers in central Illinois basically.

Hello to you cousin,

Somewhere in my computer I have a record of where Peter bought land. If I can pinpoint that maybe I can figure the closest cemetery. Also can check who owns the land now and ask them if they know of a farm cemetery. My health is not the best but I do live in Barry, Pike County, IL so I could at least get a photo of the area.

I do not know James Sparrow's birth date but he was born in KY. He had a reputation as a wild one and loved racing horses. He married Cynthia Medlock March 5, 1840. Sometime in late 1844 or in 1845 he went to MO. He never returned and no one knows what happened to him. I figure they knew at the time because on June 4, 1845 Cynthia married Carl William Parrack (sometimes spelled Parrick). As far as I know James and Cynthia had three children - Celia b.28 Dec 1840(my ancestor) who married James Robert Allen 9 Nov 1859, Mary b. about 1842 who died an infant and Susan b. Sept 1844 who married Lemuel Akright 24 Sept 1862.
Cynthia Medlock Sparrow Allen died 31 Jan 1890. She is buried in Bowman Cemetery, Brown Co, IL I do have a photo of Cynthia and Carl Parrack and one of Susan with Lemuel Akright. The photo of Susan is good but the one of Cynthia is very poor quality.

Do you have a public tree on Ancestry? If so I can post the photos there if you can tell me which one it is. If not I can email direct to you privately. My email is tmartin1508 at yahoo.com.

I do know of the Lincoln connection. It was Henry Sparrow that married Lucy Shipley Hanks Sparrow.

Hello cousin;

No I am sorry I do not as yet have a photo of William. I will ask another cousin if anyone knows where Peter is buried. My guess would be on or near the family farm he was living on as an elderly man, in one census. He was living with his son William if memory serves me offhand. They were in Pike county. I have other lines in Pike county IL also, and it seemed in those days they all had a small cemetery on part of their farm. Most of those cemeteries have since become overgrown. That line is something I do intend to study further in the coming year if possible at all.

Did you know the Sparrow brothers have a connection to Abe Lincoln? Two Sparrow brothers (brothers of Peter, my direct ancestor) wed Abe Lincoln's grandmother and great aunt. It is disputed who was the father of Lincoln's mother. The grandmother wed a Sparrow after the child was born, it could've been a Sparrow or another man. But still, a connection.

Would love to know more about James Sparrow.

I do have a photo of Sarah Jane Sparrow on my tree courtesy of her grandson, Courtney Easley. So the photo has impeccable (family) provenance. (Sarah Jane Sparrow was William Sparrow's daughter.)

I happen to be looking for a marriage record in Montgomery County for Richard Dudley and the names SPARROW and OGDEN are both in the tree I am seaching but can't fit them in the puzzle but so I just jotted down the information for future use. The following record is listed on Ancestry.com and was taken from Volume 2, Page 520 of the Maryland Marriage Records for Montogmery County

WM. SPARROW AND MARY OGDEN, NOV. 6,, 1781

If I every figure out how I came accross this page and IF any one is interested I'll let you know.

Evelyn Dudley
eve@thedudleys.com

"IF ONLY ANCESTORS CAME WITH DROP DOWN LISTS AND ON-LINE
HELP"

Hi
The info I have is that Reginald was born in Plymouth and Susannah were born in Saint Nicholas Devon, England. They are my 2xgreat grandparents thru their daughter Amy Emily Discombe Sparrow. The website www.mundia.com has a lot of info that I found useful. Susannah Discombe came to Australia on the ship 'Standard' in 1854 with one of her sisters and her parents. Not sure about Reginald.

Hello Bryan

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this but just wanted to give you the good news. I have found the rightful owners of the little Bible and it will be back in their possession this weekend. I have been contacted by Charles Ernest Sparrow's great great grandson, and am sending the bible to him. Unfortunately they live in Wales which is too far for me to travel, as I would have loved to have delivered it personally to him.

Thank you once again for all your valuable help with this and I have passed on all the information you gave me to Jason the GGGrandson.

Jill

Hi Jill

I was not stasfied that we had the right man so I had a go using different sources. Seems like we have the right man and he was fighting the Boers in 1901.
So we know lots about him apart from what to do with his bible.

British Army Service records - WO96 Militia
Charles Ernest SPARROW
Born 1881, Hankerton, Malmesbury, WIL
age 18yrs at Attestation 4 April 1899
3rd Bn Wilts Reg
Soldier no. 5942
Discharge Corps Duke of Edinburgh's (Wiltshire Regiment) - 62nd & 99th Foot
National Archives ref. I have traced our GGG Granddfather back to being born in Suffolk and one of his brother moved up to Lancashire so it is possible I have missed a link and one escaped to Wales. I am not giving up on this tho' as this little Bible must mean a lot to someone especially as it has Charle's handwriting in it.

Thank you so much for all your help on this.

I said earlier that there was no sign of Charles and Minne having children. That would be from result of looking for children born called SPARROW where mother's maiden name was WILLIAMS.

I seem to have got that wrong; probably by typo. There are in fact three possible children.

Births Sep 1911
SPARROW David L C Williams Cardiff 11a 1006

Births Dec 1916
Sparrow Herbert G Williams Cardiff 11a 869

Births Jun 1920
Sparrow Gertrude A Williams Cardiff 11a 1159

So there's a good chance that there are descendents of Charles Ernest SPARROW out there somewhere.

Bryan

Hi Jill

Did your lot have any connection with South Wales?

Looks to me like Charles got married again. No sign of any children to this marriage either. Possible she married into your family.

Bryan

PS - you may have noticed this has been moved to the SPARROW surname board. It is greatly appreciated.

I was secretly hoping that he would somehow be part of my tree but I have double checked with all the details you have given me, and nothing matches. I will certainly contact the tree owner as it seems such a shame that his Bible should be in the wrong hands.
Re: Charles Ernest SPARROW ...

I can find no sign of Charles Ernest SPARROW being born about 1899 so think that 1899-04-04 date may be when he joined up.
Therefore; taking a big stab in the dark I think this may be him.

Charles Esnest SPARROW born 1881 Hankerton near Malmesbury, Wiltshire
With father George etc in 1891. No sign in 1901 so maybe he had joined up and was in South Africa.
Marries Minnie WILLIAMS in Cardiff in 1910 and is with her in 1911; working in Barry Docks as Labourer. Have a boarder called Edna Leigh age 18.
No sign that Charles and Minnie have any children.
Minne dies 1921.
Charles E SPARROW dies
Name: Charles E Sparrow Birth Date: abt 1882 Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1962 Age at Death: 80 Registration district: East Glamorgan Inferred County: Glamorganshire Volume: 8b Page: 300

There's a lot of sloppy assumptions in the above but it might be right.

There is a family tree on Ancestry where the owner seems to be the Great Grandchild of Elizabeth SPARROW who was the sister of the George SPARROW above who was the father of Charles born 1881. They only have the name of Charles Ernest SPARROW and his existance in 1891 - so no easy connection to your Bible though they may know more than they have shown in the Tree.

Bryan
I did a search and on a site called "The Wardrobe, home of the infantry Regiments of Berkshire and Wiltshire" seached for Charles SPARROW.
Came up with Charles Ernest SPARROW
3rd Militia Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment
Date 1899-04-04

No Regimental number given. I don't now whether the date is when he was born or joined.

Contacting the people who run the site might help and they may be interested in adding the bible to their museum.

Another site "The Long Long Trail" says of the Wiltshire Regiment.
3rd (Reserve) Battalion
August 1914 : in Devizes. A depot/training unit, it moved on mobilisation to Weymouth, going in April 1915 but returning in July and forming part of the Portland Garrison. Moved to Sittingbourne around September 1917, becoming part of the Thames & Medway Garrison.

OR
Battalions of the Terratorial Force
3/4th Battalion
Formed at Trowbridge in March 1915. Moved to Bournemouth.
8 April 1916 : became 4th Reserve Battalion. By September 1916 was at Hursley Park, and moved to Bournemouth (October 1916), Sutton veny (February 1917), Larkhill (October 1917) and finally to Dublin (May 1918).

Bryan

Charles Ernest SPARROW ...

Our family have been given a small Bible belonging to a Charles Ernest Sparrow who does not feature in our family tree. I do not have a DOB for Charles but the Bible does have the inscription "Wiltshire Regiment H5337". Can anyone help me as we would like to pass the Bible on to his ancestors. Many thanks - Jill

Hi Andy,
If you have a look on the World Connect records through RootsWeb you will see the details of the Allington Sparrow ancestors from Weston Colville. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
What is missing for Allington born 1702 is the marriage entry from Weston Colville parish register "03 Oct 1726 SPARROW Allington of Shudy Camps & Sarah TOWNSEND otp"
It's my reasonable but unconfirmed proposition that the Allington Sparrow who married Anne Diss was the same noted in the Weston Colville Parish Register as baptised on "21 Feb 1726 SPARROW Allington son of Allington of Camps & Sarah". This would then connect our Allington to the Weston Colville older Allington Sparrows.
I would really appreciate any details/copies of records you have on Anne DISS and her parents if you can contact me at rforrester12@gmail.com and I'm happy to expand on the discussion re Allington Sparrow.
Thanks...
Andy, I've traced the Allington Sparrow that married Anne Diss back a further two generations but there seems to be a general view that the name Allington was taken on by one of two people from West Wratting, John Sparrow (B:1644)or Alexander Sparrow (B:1653) as a way to garner favour with the Allington family of Horseheath Hall. But regarding Anne Diss I have no information, and would like to ask if you have any details about her beyond her baptism, marriage and burial dates? Thanks... Richard Forrester

I found this same family in the 1860 Census in Pike County Missouri. The name Williamson raises a lot of curiosity for me, because in my father's ancestry, there was a Williamson Johnson, whose mother's maiden name was either SPARROW or DUNAWAY. I have seen her name reported both ways. Not sure if there are any connections, but like I say, it certainly raises a level of curiosity. May have to pursue it further one day.

A while back, I was in contact with Fred Bonk but when I tried to email him at work (a few months ago) the email bounced back and after making discreet enquiries I was told he had left the company. I have meant to try snail mail to him but I have been busy with grandchildren and it hasn't happened :-(

I am so pleased to have another Marian Alice Sparrow contact. My private email is: heatherannej@hotmail.com

Perhaps you would like to get in touch via that address and I will be able to let you have lots of Soar stuff :-)

Bye for now
Heather

Sarah Sparrow

When going through some old books at my grandmothers I stumbled across an 1820 bible. The book was inscribed with a name and date yet I cannot figure out for the life of me where she fits into my family tree!
The title page was inscribed with "Sarah Downton Hampton 1826". The following page has the birth and death of one child: Mary Downton Sparrow; b. 9/11/1834, 1834 in Lovington Campbell County Kentucky; d. 9/4/1835 in Lovington Campbell County Kentucky.
Despite pouring over censuses, I cannot find her anywhere. I assume by the surname of her daughter that she married into the Sparrow family (the surname of my great great great grandfather, William Sparrow). Odder is that this grandfather was born in England in 1848, 14 years after Sarah gave birth to a daughter in Kentucky. This leads me to believe perhaps Sarah was William's aunt?
If anyone could help me to figure out who this woman is I would be beyond grateful!
