Hi there.

Sometime in the early 70's, a son was born to Jeffrey Spears of Overland Park, Kansas. This son would be my cousin and I am very interested in finding him. I have no details other than knowing he is out there.

Grandparents would be Phyllis and Ralph, based in Louisiana, Missouri.

Any information would be a huge help! Thanks!

Re: What is the origin of the Spears name?

Here is what I have found out about the Irish/Scott Spears according to DNA testing. My DNA results have connected my line to the Old Kings of Ireland. Later some of them did go to Scottland.
Many families are connected to the Old Kings of Ireland which would be the Laigin people who were from the Leinster area of Ireland. The Laigin people relate to a people or confederation of dynasties which claimed common ancestry from Labraid Loingsech.

Now here is the interesting part. The name Laigin derives from 'láigen' ('a spear'). So the Spears/Spear/Speer/Speers/Spier/Spiers names could all be from the Celtic word Laigen. These people were known to use a Laigen/Spear in battle.

It is very possible that the name was translated from the Celtic at some point.

The Irish DNA is a direct line and not a varient of some other according to DNA researchers.

The German and English Spears names that are not connected via DNA would have to figure out how they came about lol. No real Idea unless they thought they were from a Spears woman who never married or from a union that was not legal. It is unkown and just speculation.

As for the African American and American Indian Spears. It is like you said. They are prob. due to a union with a Spears member. There is no foundation for the Spears name to be from Africa or of Native American origin according to DNA results of all Spears men that have been tested. Results have been gathered by several online companies and the most common is familytreeDNA .

If you want to read more about the Leinster People and the Laigin/Laigen (Spear) History a link is here... http://customers.hbci.com/~tiraha/leinster/history.html

The Spears family you are looking for in N.C. I think is in the 1860 census. The name was misspelled or miss read. William & Elizabeth Spears(in the census as Spen)are the right ages and the male children match up to their children in the 1870 Ky census. also what seems to be her parents are immediately above them in the 1860 N.C. census (Joseph and Sarah Caldwell. I am a grandson of Silvester's son Adam Spears. You can contact me at donaldjustice@jetbroadband.com

I looked a Scottish Clan book that had the spellings of Speers and Speirs. From what the guy was telling me Spears is a name of Scottish/Northern Ireland origin. He said, like I've heard before, when people traveled over and gave the person taking names their name, that person usually spelled the name the way it sounded. I know that a lot of you are saying something about the Native American and African American ties to the last name. I do know that in some cases African American slaved took on the last names of owners or those who helped rescue them. Also, with the Native American aspect. More than likely our ancestors married or mated with Native Americans once they traveled to the Americas. Anyway, I would definitely look into the different spellings when searching for a Spears origin. I know I will when I finally get to dive into my family tree.

Hi Vivian I think we have found William & Elizabeth Spears in the 1860 north Carolina census. The name was misspelled as Spen (It might be that it was read wrong) William was 40 & Elizabeth was 25.Children listed are Charity 9, Mary 7, Joseph l. 5, Sarah A. 3, John A.2 and Adaline 1. Immediately above this family is Joseph Colwell 53, Sarah 50, and 7 children. The census says Joseph has 300 acres. The 1799 Wilkes County, N.C. Tax List also shows Joseph Caldwell with 300 acres. This might give us a new line to trace them back further. Thanks Donal Justice

Most of the info I have on him came from the applications of other family members when they applied for the land grants that were offered to the Cherokee.

According to my cousin, who did a lot of research, she said that Robert was a cole minner in Surry County, NC. He also fought in the war of Horshoe Bend (name?) and was wounded. One letter of ref that I have, said that he looked like an Indian, slept outside, and walked with a limp from the war.

That is about the extent of my knowledge of him at this point.

Kitten

I also have a copy of the Virginia Land grant that he was given for land in Cabell Co Virginia in 1813. That is when he moved West. He was also in the Rev.
Hi Barbara,
I have Spears in my family too, however we are white. I Have had to research several versions of the name. Spears, Spear, Speer, Speers, Spier. I am sure there are even more than this, I have been warned not to depend on the one spelling.
We have an Isaac in out tree but he is in the 1600's.
Good luck this is not an easy task most of the time. Our Spears are in Kentucky.
I know one thing for sure my family of Spears seem to have spent their lives living on the Louisiana/Mississippi line, and went back and forth across often. My line started as far as I can tell, in Mississippi and then crossed into Louisiana right across the LA. line. My earliest Spears is Isaac, born in 1825, my GreatG grandfather. I don't know anything for sure before that date. I believe that there were at least four brothers: Isaac, David, Mingo, and James, all living on the La. Line at Woodville Road in 1870. If you can add anything to what I have or vice versus let me know.

Hello Barbara,

My name is Flynn Spears who's Great GF was named Richard Calvin Spears. My side of the Spears family lived in Tippah County, MS. It may have been possible that some of the Spears family moved north to this county. But I thought it possible once I saw the name "Calvin" in your post. The only thing that does not fit is the date of birth I have to him compared to the date of birth of Issac's wife. So, will have to either do more digging or hope others have more records we can review. I have no census records at this time. Please feel free to contact me and I will share what I have.
Flynn

My only source is the 1860 Smythe Co. VA census showing father John M. Spears, mother Maga Spears, FieldER Spears and 2 siblings. John b. Tenn., Maga age 22 b. N.C. In later censuses, John has m. Mary Eliz. Logan with additional children. Fielder is sometimes spelled Fielding, or Fields. He m. Sarah Hensley and eventually died in Indiana. One theory is that John M. was l/2 N.A. but I have no source.. The name "Brogan" may or may not appear in Mary Logan's heritage.
John M was in the Civil War and I believe Maga may have died in his absence. He and Mary Logan had several children, most of whom lived around the Kingsport TN area. See local cemeteries.
I would welcome any and all info re this family. John M's son John Z. was my grandfather; he died in Hurley, VA

I realize that this is an old post I am replying to, but I wondered if any information has been found regarding this Mary A Spears that married M. G. Holbert in Hopkins Co?

M G are the initials of Marville (sp?) Greenberry. M. G. "Green" Holbert and Mary A (Ann) Spears Holbert(also known as Mary Jane Spears to later generations) are my great-great-grandparents.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Ann Mego back in 2001 (I think) and corresponding with her quite a bit back then. She told me that she was named after Mary A Spears Holbert.

On the 1880 census, she is listed as M.A.D. Holbert. The story goes is that the A.D. stands for Anne Dramita, and that is Anne Mego's full name, Anne Dramita Mego.

We never found any relatives (siblings, parents, or otherwise) for Mary A Spears...only a marriage record and the later family census records with Marville.

Perhaps something may have been found since it has been over 8 years since this original post was made.

Thanks in advance,
Wesley Wyche
