My 3rd great grandfather was George Augustine (9 Apr 1833 Differten, Germany- 17 Jun 1911 Carrick, PA). The birthdate from his death cert matches the birthdate on IGI FamilySearch listing of his marriage to Mary Speicher (IGI FS says her birth info is 11 DEC 1835 Puttlingen, , Saarland Bezirk, Germany)
. I am awaiting her death cert. I would love to find her parents' names.

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/igi/individual_record...=

Hi! I have 12 children in my records for Peter & Florence (Monpert) Speicher: Motz, Simon, Flossie, Angelina, Albert Samuel, George, Arlena, Elisabeth, Peter, Leona, Katherine, Mary. My grandpa, Fritz, was their cousin. I also have a picture taken about 1910 of all the male cousins - my grandpa and his brothers with all of your grandma's brothers.
I have quite a bit of information if you are interested in exchanging info, including their Ellis Island records, records showing where they were from in Alsace, church records from Bergholz, etc.

Your grandma and my grandpa were less than 1 year apart. So she is probably in the school pictures I have, I've got one from about 1912ish, and one about 1920ish. Did she live in Bergholz all her life? I have in my records that she passed away in Bergholz in 2000.

I would love to talk to you further - feel free to contact me direct or through this site. My email is B19821@aol.com

Renee

Shirley-
The Speicher families I am researching are the sons of Mathias Speicher & Barbara Yost. The families came to America in 1892 from Lorraine Provence. The brothers who came to America with their families are:

Nicholas Speicher married Catherine Bertels
Peter Speicher married Florence Monpert
Once they came through Ellis Island they settled in East Greenville, Ohio, and worked in the coal mines. By 1910-1915 many of the Speichers had moved to Bergholz. The ones who didnt were living in Akron.

Peter was born about 1855. One of Peter and Florence's sons was, Peter Speicher, born 1903. On the 1930 census the son was living in Harrison Co, Ohio married to Martha.
Let me know if this is consistent with your information. Thanks - Renee

I have found various spellings in Pennsylvania. Everything from Speicher, Spiker, Spicher, Spicker to Spicer. Mostly because the government census recorders spelled the name they way they wanted, not how the family actually spelled it. My husband and I live in Pennsylvania and there are many Spichers/Speichers/Spikers here but few of us can connect because of all the spelling variations. Most are from German lines, some are Amish/Mennonite.

I've been able to trace my husband's line to possibly a Christian Speicher in Westmoreland/Armstrong county, Pennsylvania in the late 1700s. Do you have John Spiker's middle name? I'll check our tree for any possible match.

Re: Speicher Book

Hi Joe,

I know there were a lot of changes as time went on from what I believe to be the original "Speicher" (I believe that to be the original because of the german word "speicher" which has many meaning along the line of attic, storage, cache, and in more modern times, computer memory.) My line descends from Ulrich Speicher who emmigrated from the swiss/german border area to PA in the 1600s, where my family still lives. I do know there are many lines, even descended from Ulrich, who have changed to Spiker or Speiker or Spyker. THere's even a woman who just started working at my office whose name is spelled Speicher, but her family came thru Berlin area to the US in the 1800s and they pronounce it "SPY-sher". So, there is a lot of variation for what I take is the same rather large family, if you go back far enough.

Not sure if that helps at all, but long story short, I bet Speicher is where your Spiker came from. Leave it to moving to America for things like that to change. :-)

Tyler Speicher

I am a descendent of John J. Spiker and believe that his name was originally spelled Speicher.

I too, keep hitting a brick wall regarding this ancestry due to changes in spelling etc.

He was born in Germany in 1807 and came to the America in the 1830's I believe, winding up in Sabine Parish Louisiana in about 1840 which was then actually Natchtioches Parish.

Can you tell me if you have seen the change from Speicher to Spiker frequently in your research?

Thank you,

Douglas J. He held interim pastorates at the Painesville (Ohio) Church of the Brethren, the Zion Hill Church of the Brethren, and the Girard (Ohio) Presbyterian Church.
I have just discovered that my great grandfather Milton Speicher was married (2nd marriage) to Ella Cheek.
1910 United States Federal Census
Milton Speicher (age 50)
Spouse: Ella Cheek (age 37) (birth Abt 1873)
Birth Abt. 1860
Marriage: August 2, 1894
Other resident: William Speicher (age 20)
Residence: Pulaski Arkansas

This is the most information I've been able to find on Milton, other than the PA 1880 census where Milton and his twin brother (Jonathon) were living in a boarding home at the age of 21.

I have no idea, however, if William is a son of Milton & Ella. If anyone can provide any help with this line, I'd be euphoric! :-)
Thanks,
Shirley

Re: Captain Michael Scott Speicher - Desert Storm MIA Identified

On the Web:
http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=1...

IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 590-09
August 07, 2009
Speicher Search Details Announced

The Navy announced today additional details regarding the recent discovery of the remains of Navy Capt. Michael “Scott” Speicher in Iraq. Speicher was shot down flying a combat mission in an F/A-18 Hornet over west-central Iraq on Jan. 17, 1991, during Operation Desert Storm.

Acting in part on information provided by an Iraqi citizen in early July, Multi National Force – West’s (MNF-W) personnel recovery team went to a location in the desert which was believed to be the crash site of Speicher’s jet. The Iraqi, a Bedouin, was 11 years old at the time of the crash and did not have direct knowledge of where Speicher was buried, but knew of other Bedouins who did. He willingly provided his information during general discussion with MNF-W personnel and stated he was unaware of the U.S. government’s interest in this case until queried by U.S. investigators in July 2009.

The Iraqi citizens led MNF-W’s personnel recovery team to the area they believed Speicher was buried. The area where the remains were recovered was located approximately 100 kilometers west of Ramadi, in Anbar province. There were two sites that teams searched. One site was next to the downed aircraft that was discovered in 1993 and the other site was approximately two kilometers away. The second site was where Speicher’s remains were recovered.

The recovery personnel searched two sites from July 22-29. The personnel recovery team consisted of approximately 150 people, mostly Marines and other forces under MNF-W.

The recovered remains include bones and multiple skeletal fragments. Based on visual examination of the remains and dental records at the site, a preliminary assessment was reached that the remains were that of Speicher. After searching the site another day, no further remains were recovered.

On July 30, the remains were turned over from the recovery team to MNF-W mortuary affairs at Al Asad. The remains were then transported to Dover Port Mortuary at Dover Air Force Base, Del. They were examined by the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology’s (AFIP) Armed Forces medical examiner who positively identified them as those of Speicher on Aug. 1.

Positive identification by AFIP was made by comparing Speicher’s dental records with the jawbone recovered at the site. The teeth were a match, both visually and radiographically. AFIP’s DNA Lab in Rockville, Md., confirmed the remains to be Speicher on Aug. 2 via DNA comparison tests of the remains by comparing them to DNA reference samples previously provided by family members.

Photos are available at http://www.navy.mil/view_single.asp?id=2934 .

For additional information, please contact Navy public affairs at (703) 697-5342.

Captain Speicher was shot down flying a combat mission in an F/A-18 Hornet over west-central Iraq on January 17th, 1991 during Operation Desert Storm.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Captain Speicher's family for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country," said Ray Mabus, Secretary of the Navy. "I am also extremely grateful to all those who have worked so tirelessly over the last 18 years to bring Captain Speicher home."

“Our Navy will never give up looking for a shipmate, regardless of how long or how difficult that search may be,” said Admiral Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations. “We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Captain Speicher and his family for the sacrifice they have made for our nation and the example of strength they have set for all of us.”

Acting on information provided by an Iraqi citizen in early July, US Marines stationed in Al Anbar Province went to a location in the desert which was believed to be the crash site of Captain Speicher’s jet. The Iraqi citizen stated he knew of two Iraqi citizens who recalled an American jet impacting the desert and the remains of the pilot being buried in the desert. One of these Iraqi citizens stated that they were present when Captain Speicher was found dead at the crash site by Bedouins and his remains buried. The Iraqi citizens led US Marines to the site who searched the area. Remains were recovered over several days during the past week and flown to Dover Air Force Base for scientific identification by the AFIP’s Office of the Armed Forces Medical Examiner.

The recovered remains include bones and multiple skeletal fragments. Positive identification was made by comparing Captain Speicher’s dental records with the jawbone recovered at the site. The teeth are a match, both visually and radiographically.

While dental records have confirmed the remains to be those of Captain Speicher, the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology DNA Lab in Rockville, Maryland is running DNA tests on the remains recovered in Iraq and comparing them to DNA reference samples previously provided by family members. Results will take approximately 24 hours.

A high-resolution photo of Captain Speicher is available at http://www.navy.mil/view_single.asp?id=2934

Contact: Navy Public Affairs (703) 697-5342.

Hi Brett,

I don't know if anyone has responded to you yet, but I happen to have the big Speicher book in front of me. Here's what is says on the Genealogy of Peter Speicher:

Peter was one of the sons of Ulrich Speicher. The descendants of Michael and peter are quite numerous in Berks County, while many other have moved to different counties in PA and to other states in the Union. Many still live in the vicinity of the old Speicher homestead. Both brothers were born in the old country and must have been quite young on their arrival at Philadelphia.
Peter was named an executor of the will of his brother, Michael. We are reasonably sure that the Christian named in the following genealogy was his grandson. The evidence, however, is verbal, but reliable. Paul I. (the historian) Speicher's uncle, Charles G. Speicher, stated at different times that his grandfather and the grandfather of Isaac Speicher were second cousins.
"By checking the Northkill Church records, it has now been determined Christian's parents were Christian Speicher and Catharine."
Peter was married to Catharine Etschberger at Christ Lutheran Church, Stouchsburg, Pennsylvania in 1782. They had a son, Joseph Speiger (b. 12/13/1799) baptized (8/10/1800) at Bellaman's Church.
Peter was named as the father of Johannes Speicher (8/3/1777-12/6/1859) in the Northkille Church records and resided in Upper Bern Township, Berks County.
Johannes Speicher M. Rebecca (b. 1801) Upper Tulpehocken Township, Berks County.
4 children:
Isaac Speicher (b. 1828)
Catharine Speicher (b. 1831)
Mary Speicher (b. 1835)
Rebecca Speicher (b. 1840

Then it goes into the Family of Christian Speicher, beginning in 1794.

I hope that helps...

TJ Speicher (a descendant of Michael Speicher)

And if so, is there any contact information?

Thanks,
Tyler John Speicher
A7A2C3B1A (if you have the book)

I am from the Ulrich Speicher line through Christian Speicher b: 1738 in Berks Co., Pa. Peter, Michael, Barbara & Jacob as siblings. What year do you have as Ulrich Speicher's birth date. I found abt. 1712. I dont' think that's correct. I may be able to get you a color copy of the coat of arms, my Father has a copy from a long time ago. If you are still interested, please email me @ momofjodanlin@hotmail.com. I am also interested to learn what information you have come across. My G Grandfather's name was spelled Spiker. The second Christian Speicher b: 1766 has a will where he refers to his last name as Speiger. Not sure why it has changed over the years.
Would love to hear from you!
Aimee Speicher-Skaggs

I have a book that gives some history, as well as a Coat of Arms for the family name. I am looking for a color copy of this COA. The one i have is in B/W.

any info would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Jeremy

I have a 1961 copy of the book. But it would be nice to get a hold of the the 1983 copy. I do not know where we got the copy, it was passed down through the family. and i haven't had much luck finding anyone who is related to Paul I. Speicher, the researcher and part publisher of the original. He his now deceased.

I am not willing to part with the copy i have, but i could make some copies of the pages if that interests you.

Was wondering if you have found anything on Peter Speicher? He is also from my line but information is very sketchy on him. My line is Daniel, John D. Speicher (married to Emma Catherine Kegg), and then Royal Kegg Speicher, who was my granfather.

Jeanne Diehl Stiffler
