Hello,

Your Grandmother Sallie is sister to my grandfather John Emmet Speirs, born in Lewis Co. W.Va. There were a ton of siblings, of whom George Speirs is also one. I'll list the ones I have from an old Speirs genealogy compiled by an Edna Mae Speirs in 1967. The children of James B. Speirs and Mary Turner are: Janet, who married Bill Roe (they lived in Ohio); George Speirs, married to Lurah Nuzum; Sallie, your grandmother; Dell who married Farley Bush; Quaintain who married Martha Ballard; Jessie Ralph who married Laura Morrison; John Speirs (my grandfather) who married Daisy Queen; Hugh Philander who married Emily-last name unknown, they lived in Butte, Montana; and finally as far as I know, Tom Speirs. I told you there was a bunch of them! I can provide information about John's family since they are the people I grew up with. John died in California in 1954. He and Daisy had three sons and one daughter who survived infancy. You can learn a lot about one of the sons (my uncle) if you Google Jack Speirs. Do you know you are also related to the wonderful, troubled actress Tallulah Bankhead? I've rattled on enough, but it's such fun to share this information. If you're not aware of it, you may also be related to Benton Queen in some way (Weston and the surrounding area seemed to be overrun with Queens); he's noted in family history for having fired the last shot in the Civil War - he fought for the Union. That's a story for another time.

I'm glad to have gotten the information from your post about James Speirs and his background - I'd hit a wall trying to get it. Thanks.

Juanita Speirs

Joseph,
It sounds as though we are related also. James Bankhead Speirs, born Cape Breton Island in 1834, is my GGrandfather. His son John Emmet Speirs, born 1885, is my grandfather. John married Daisy Queen. Both sides are from the area in and around Weston. If you have any information on James Speirs and Janet/Janette Bankhead I'd love to hear it. I've found James almost impossible to track back to Scotland, though I know he and Janet were married in Glascow. What fun to find you here!

Juanita Speirs

Sherry,

I am the GGGrandaughter of James Bankhead Speirs and I'm betting he and William were brothers. James was born on Cape Breton Island in 1834 to James Speirs and Janet/Janette Bankhead. I'm having great difficulty getting information about James Speirs and his Scottish roots, though I know he was born there. He and Janet were married in Glasgow. I understand they came to America around 1834. I have a fair amount of information on the line through James Bankhead Speirs. They were mostly in W.Va. In re-reading a genealogy chart I have here, I see a William Speirs, brother of James, but it doesn't give his middle name. This might be a hit for you - according to this he was born in Maryland...I don't have a year. He married an Ellen Bailey of W.Va. If I'm reading this old info correctly, they had the following children: Sam,Isin of Troy, W. Va. and Matthew of Gallipolis, Ohio. I hope this gives you a lot to work with. If this is your line and you can get past James Speirs, Williams father, I'd sure like to hear about it.

Cousin (?) Juanita Speirs

Hello,
James Bankhead Speirs is also my GGrandfather. His son John Speirs (born in WVa in 1885) was my grandfather. He was married to Daisy Queen. I have a rather sketchy Speirs family tree put together by an Edna Mae Speirs in 1967. If you let me know which of the many children of James Bankhead Speirs and Mary Elizabeth Turner you are decended from perhaps I can help. The biggest problem, and it seems a common one, that I have had is trying to get James Speirs history before he left Scotland. I did come up with info from somewhere that he and Janet/Janette Bankhead were married in the High Kirk, City of Glascow. Her father, James Bankhead was born in Renfrewshire Scotland in 1784. I'm still working on all of this. I certainly can provide information about John Speirs descendants since they were the people I loved and grew up with. I guess you know you're related to the actress Tallulah Bankhead of a bygone era. I don't know how far you've gotten since you posted this, but I'd love to compare information.

Juanita Speirs

Hi Don,
Thanks for this. It seems your James Speirs could be same one I have as older brother of George who was also a shoemaker, of Fore Street, Kilmarnock. He married Ann McLachlan (or variety of spelling!) and I have his marriage and death records. However, even from Scotlands People I can not find any record of him on census records, except for 1861, where there is a George, wife Ann, and some children with right names, but his occupation is not listed, so can not be sure. Think his name must have been mis-spelt or mis-transcribed.
George was father of James Speirs who was missionary in British Guyana whose first wife died there. He then married again to a woman from Bute who he left looking after his 4 children while he went back to Guyana! Anyway, if you should happen to have any records relating to George I would be most grateful. From what I have, it looks like he had separated from Ann who was not at same address as him when he died in Glasgow.
My husband is great grandson of George, so I guess you and he share same 3x gt grandfather.
Best wishes,
Diana.

The following may be of some interest to you. I have James Speirs on my database. James's parents were James Speirs (d.1852) and Christina McNair (d. 21 August 1864 aged 78). According to the MI Crosbie Kirkyard CD, James married Agnes Hutcheson in 1843. The 1841 Census records that the Speirs family were residing at Portland St, Troon. According to the 1861 Census he employed 5 men in his shoemaking business. A decade later the 1871 Census records that his son James Hutchieson Speirs(1848 - 1903) employed 2 men and 1 boy. James H Speirs resided at 8 Temple Hill Street, Troon, Ayrshire. He married Janet Douglas (1) and Janet Hutton (2). Janet Hutton (1853 - 1908) was my great aunt. Her eldest brother Robert (1849 - 1946), my grandfather, emigrated to New Zealand in 1874. He named his eldest son James Hutcheson Hutton. I can supply further information if you wish.
Don Hutton
Christchurch, New Zealand.

An article at Wikipedia states "Speirs returned to England to find that his wife (the widow of a British soldier who had been reported dead) had returned to her first husband who had turned up alive as a German prisoner of war". Not sure when he moved to Canada but I found military records for Canadian service. I think this is him as I don't have a lot of information to go on. I believe my great-grandfather was born on October 10th 1882. Served in the 43rd Battalion as a Brake-man. From what my father told me he was some sort of engineer so this fits. He had also served in the 79th Cameron Highlanders of Canada for 3 years...
If anyone has any information or can give me another direction to serch that would be appreciated

Re: Speirs in Beith and all over Scotland & Ireland - it's in the DNA

Update on DNA Findings:
My Aryreshire Spiers have had one DNA match in Blainslie, roxburghshire and East Lothian. They've also a DNA match with a Speirs who came to Vermont by 1800 from somewhere in Scotland. In addition, we've had very good matches with several lines that left Scotland for Ireland around 1500.

The nice think about dna is that it's a blue print for your line and when you find a match, you know for sure that you share a common ancestor at some point. The Irish Spiers have a crest and information that suggests that our line and probably all the Spiers of Scotland are offspring of one Malius Spär who married into the Royal line of Norway.

So when someone tells you that you aren't related because my Spiers are from some other part of Scotland, that's just not true! It's just a matter of how far back you have to go to find that connection! I hope others will also take this test so we can refine what we already know and figure out when these various lines diverged. The nice thing is that if someone else knows something that you don't know, their family history can become your family history.

I know a lot about DNA, so please write if you want to know more. Also Family Tree DNA is the best company to use and I'd recommend starting with a 37 marker test.

I hadn't paid too much attention to the dates in the original enquiry. However, it seems unlikely to me that the Margaret Spiers born in 1812 would have been married in 1822. I think you must be looking for a different Margaret Spiers.

I do know that Margaret (b. 1812) was one of nine children born to James Spiers and Anne Stewart in Caputh and Blairgowrie. While I have information on some of their descendants, I don't have much on Margaret apart from the possibility that she married a William Wilson in 1836.

I also have information on the descendants of Robert Spiers and William Spiers - the two brothers of James Spiers.

Hi Alistair:

I think there have been quite a few Speirs in Broxburn. I don't recognise the names you mention so I will add a few of my own to see if you recognise any:

My grandmother Mary Jane Speirs (1903), daughter of James Speirs (1874), son of John Speirs. Originating from Ballymena in Northern Ireland.

Does that help at all?
I am Alistair Speirs, only son of Walter Speirs who had two brothers, William and Thomas. After WW2 my father left the UK and came to the then Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) where he settled and married. His father was a shale miner in Broxburn as was his grandfather, also a Walter. I believe we have relatives from Broxburn buried in johannesburg but I have no idea who they are ?

Speers/Speirs Co. Down before 1850?

I research Speers in Canada and have hit a brick wall in Ulster. To explain:

I believe that a Hugh Speers form County Down had 3 sons James, Hugh and Joesph who all moved to Ivy ON a hamlet ~30 min drive due north of the Toronto, ON airport.

Family/Town and Census all indicate they were brothers and consistent histories indicate their father was named Hugh from County Down.

I have some reason to believe they were baptized at the Annahilt Presbyterian church. Spelling differs but probably this is not an issue? It seems in our family (and probably many) spelling only settled down from the last half of the 1800's.

There is also an unconfirmed (but much repeated) history that we are related to a William Speers b 1751 Tandaragee, County Armagh, Ireland. His descendednts probably account for ~3/4 of "Speers" in Canada.

So.. anyone out there have links to Speers/Speirs from Co. Down circa 1825 or so?

THANKS!

Alex

Re: George William & Lory P. Speirs

I do not have George Speirs ( b. 1944), Lory P. Speirs nor Edith Amos in my Speirs database. I do have several James Speirs, but they were born much earlier than your grandfather ( James Speirs).
I must admit I am only beginning to do deep research into this line. I do research on 8 other families, however.
My grandmother was Sallie Agnes Speirs Queen Cox, b. 22 Oct 1860 in Murphey's Creek, Weston, Lewis Co., VA ( now WV). Her first marriage to Joanthan Lewis Queen ended in divorce. She then married my grandfather, Franz Ellsworth Cox, on 17 Mar 1886 in Cox's Mills, Gilmer Co., WV. They had 5 children, of which my mother was the last. In 1911 this family moved from WV to TX.
Sallie's parents were James Bankhead Speirs and Mary Luisa Turner. James, b. 12 April 1833 in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.
. Father of James Bankhead -
. James, b. 9 Oct. 1803 in Renfrewshire, Scotland; d. 1843 in Indiania while looking for gold.
. James'( listed above) father was
David Speirs, b. 1757 or 27 Nov 1762 in Glasgow, Scotland; d. 15 Jan 1782 in Glasgow, Scotland.
. David's father - two names appear -
John or Hugh Speirs. Data not clear on this.

Most of this information from Scotland my mother obtained a number of years ago from Scots Ancestry Research Society. Might Google that and see what happens.

Since you did not present any State, I have no idea where North Shield Newcastle is located. Name of State may help.

Each of the above named persons had numerous children. But, I have only researched my direct line at this time.

Let me know if I may help further. Good hunting.

Charles

I have just been reading notes about the Speirs family

Our Speirs family came from Paisley - the father was the sheriff, but both mother and father were killed in a carriage accident (all heresay) on the road tween Edinburgh and Glasgow about mid 1840s and the children became orphans. Some were looked after by the local minister (not sure of the town while others not known but think various people took them in or they went to work. Two of the children came to Australia (I gather as soon as they were old enough - being John Speirs (who was about 15) and a couple of years later his sister Emily when she was about 18yr(?1853).

I have a published book which includes some Speirs history as known and mostly related to Emily who married Jonathon Mann. Jonathon was a friend of John Speirs and they came to Australia either together about 1850 (record a bit vague) or became friends enroute. There has been quite a lot of research done with the our line in Australia, but I have not heard of the School.

John married and had three children - Isabella, Robert and John. He died and the wife married again but she died about 12-18 months later and the three children were cast out to fend for themselves - Isabella was then 13, Robert 11 and John 9. In spite of two generations of orphans there have been plenty of stories passed down. John (who was also known as Jack) married at 47yrs to Frances Middleton (Fanny) and had five children (Ivy, Norman, Lila, Gordon, Roy - all deceased). Roy was my father - I have two brothers John (Jack) and William (Bill) - who also have boys respectively. . . . all Speirs.

Many years ago (1960s) my parents did some research while holidaying in Scotland, but did not have enough time to follow some leads - there was a living Thomas Speirs that seemed to be related and may have been a descendent of the first lot of orphans. I wonder if you have come across some of this information in your research.

The names seems to be repeated down the generations - and there were at least two places where this family had lived.

Does any of this link up with known records for any of you? I would love to hear from anyone who thinks they might be part of the tree . . .
This goes to my point about being skeptical. I am supposedly descended from the same William b~1751. with many descendents including a James However a *popular history lists William's father as James b. ~1724.

Where did your information on Ireland come from? Without census data I find the early 1800's and before quite a tangle of facts.

Would appreciate comparing notes.

Letter was carried by my grandfather born about January 1851 in Scotland, supposedly in or near Glasgow. Best theory now is that it was to serve as a letter of introduction.

Hi Laura!

I sent you my Beggins tree two days ago but have not received any reaction from you. I realise that you may be sick or away on business or otherwise too busy to reply, but just in case my mails were not reaching you I thought I would post this message here.

Looking forward to hearing from you at your convenience,

Eamann

Please see my message in Aug. 2009, as I am related to the Speirs family. Can you tie your information to mine? Possibly your father, George Williams Speirs born in 1944, is a g-grandson of George Williams born in the 1800s.

Charles
Austin, TX.

I am william mitchell speirs, father walter mitchell, grandfather william mitchell of DARVEL Ayrshire.

His father was john Speirs then this line is lost.

i have a trace back thru' the male line to James Nesbit of Hardhill, hanged as a Covenanter and he goes back to Murdo nesbit who edited a version of the "Scots Bible" believed to be in a museum in California.
