Hello James - Thanks for your prompt reply. You are right that I am not a descendant of the Spence family line. I am doing this research for a friend, who probably is a descendant. We've just begun this research, which might tell you why I used the phrase "ancestors seem to be".

I agree with you that there were parents for the Robert Spence who settled in New Kent. My questions would be: Did the parents stay in the Old Country or come over before, with or after Uncle William Spence, bringing son Robert or did Robert immigrate with or after his Uncle William? More research needed here.

Another point I will make is that I had assumed that Mrs Bodie did not know the maiden name of Mary "Blank" who married Nephew Robert. Is there any info about this Mary's parentage?

From family trees on Ancestry.com, it seems that James who mar. Jane Bluford might have been named James Thomas, hence my listing of him as "James T."

I am not surprised that there might be some inaccuracy in my info. Please help me correct it if you have proofs for Mrs. Bodie's info. This is a work in progress that I have been researching for less than a week. By the way, is the Spence family Bible (mentioned by Mrs. Bodie) still available?

I admire the DNA effort in the Spence line, but my friend is female. It will be her family's choice as to whether they want to contribute. I will give them this posting and you may hear from them in the future.

Thank you for your reply -- it was interesting.

Janet Shue Browne shuetree@aol.com

Mr. Jansbrow Spence,

You asked who was first immigrant for this line.

Out of the 80 Spences in the DNA project at FTDNA, I count 72 with results. Of these 72, I think only 2 claim descent from Robt. Spence who m. Mary Blank & their son Wm. who m. Mary Green & their son Jas. who m. Jane Bluford. Those 2 claiming that line are kits 35733 & 33266. If any of the rest of you with tested DNA, claim descent, post your DNA kit# to this board & say you claim descent from Robt. Spence who m. Mary Blank & their son Wm. who m. Mary Green & their son Jas. who m. Jane Bluford.

Jansbrow, you asked "who was first immigrant for this line". Look at pages 98 & 99 of "Historical Southern Families" Vol. 11 edited by Mrs. John Bennett Boddie / P. O. Box 2775 / Honolulu, Hawaii 96803 / © 1967. I have that on the web at http://members.fortunecity.com/jgreen/Spence.html until the end of this month. FortuneCity will close then. The above pages say "William Spence arrived in James Cittie, Va., in 1619. His nephew, Robert Spence, settled in New Kent County, Va., in 1654 and m. Mary Blank. Their son, William Spence, m. Mary Green. William and Mary Green Spence had a son James, b. 1748 in Augusta Co., Va. James Spence m. Jane Bluford, b. 1751, d. 1795..."

So who is the 1st immigrant? Boddie says Robert Spence, settled in New Kent County, Va., in 1654. But here, I think "settle" could mean MOVED to New Kent Co., VA from another county in VA, rather than IMMIGRATED from the UK. You asked "who was first immigrant for this line". I do not consider Robert's uncle to be of Robert's line. I consider Robert's line to go through Robert's father & his date of immigration is not stated. But if you mean "Robert's kin" rather than line, then Robt.'s uncle Wm. is the 1st immigrant & arrived in James Cittie, Va. in 1619.

We also have a contradictory lineage:
You say Robt Spence/Mary ---------- Boddie said Robt.m. Mary Blank
You say Wm. Spence/Mary Thorpe; --
You say Tho. Spence/Mary Green; --- Boddie said Wm. m. Mary Green
You say Jas. T.Spence/Jane Bluford; Boddie said Jas. m. Jane Bluford

Let's start by seeing if we are possibly are kin. You said "Earlier ancestors SEEM to be ...". If you are Mr. Jansbrow Spence do your Y-DNA at FamilyTreeDNA.Com in the Spence project If you are Ms. Jansbrow Spence then get one of your Spence men with a Spence-Y to do his Y-DNA. If your Spence Y-DNA does not match ours within a genetic distance of 3 in the 37-marker test, then either:
1) we (kits 35733 & 33266) are wrong about our lineage or
2) you do not descend from the above people
Right?
--
James W. Green-R-L48 III
285 Agnew Road
Winnsboro SC 29180-6975
803-635-9236
BroomDNA@Juno.Com
cKYgen,

I have something similar but my piece does not fit with your puzzle piece -- different puzzles. I probably should not mention my puzzle piece in a reply.

My grandmother Mamie Fereba Roberts was a granddaughter of Pheriba Hargreaves b. 1839 old Appling Co. GA married John M. Spence son of Joshua Spence & Susan Middleton. We have done the Spence Y-DNA at FTDNA in kit 35733 in the Spence project. You mention Winborn. My John M. Spence married 3rdly Levicy Britt b. 1850 & they had a dau. Miriam Susan Spence who married a Joe Wimbish. Not exactly Winborn & the time & place are wrong.
I am researching the ancestry of Arthur W. Spence, who was probably b. IA 28 Jun 1888 and d. 12 Aug 1964 in Freemont, NE. Gr-father-Wm A Spence, 1836 Smythe, VA; Gr-mother-Mary Eliz. Baber, 1844 Smythe, Va, 1926 Crawford, IA. Earlier ancestors seem to be: James Spence/Eliz. Tuttle; Wm. Spence/Mary Anderson; James T. Spence/Jane Bluford; Thomas Spence/Mary Green; Wm Spence/Mary Thorpe; Robt Spence/Mary. Would like to know who was first immigrant for this line. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Reference: William Winborn (2) ,who married Sarah Gatling, deeded land to Firbe Spence and was recored in 1802. The will of William Winborn (2) refers to his daughter Ann Spence.

The deeded land to Firbe Spence is the only way to confirm that Ann Winborne husband was Firbe Spence.

William Winborn (2) who married Sarah Gatling refers to his daughter Ann Spence. Connecting the land transfer to Firbe Spence, by the father of Ann Winborne is how I determined the name of her husband.

I have a lot of information about the Winborne (or Winburn family), but this is all I know about the Spence family.

Can a new guy wade in, here?
In 1839, an Irishman named Andrew Spence (no middle name of which I am aware) married my g-g-grand aunt, Eliza McKell, in Ulster. The two of them left Ireland in mid-1848 with their five children and came to America. They settled in Chillicothe, Ohio, where they added three more children to their brood. Among their (8 total) children was one James A. Spence, born in Feb, 1843. I have never learned what the 'A' in his name was, but it could easily have been for 'Andrew', after his father.
Most of the Spences moved from Chillicothe after the Civil War and settled again in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Along the way, James A. Spence married a girl named Cornelia "Nellie" Plocker from New York. They had at least one son, who they named James "Jay" Spence (b. about 1868 in Illinois).
The bulk of the Spences that went to Wisconsin operated a glass and china business there for many years. I've lost track of what happened to their offspring.
Does any of this ring a bell with you Spences?

Earl of Donegal "Spence" passengers.

My Spence interest comes from the Newberry, SC marriage of Jane Spence to a John Stewart c 1798. The Spences of Newberry are believed to have come to America in 1767 on the Ship "Earl of Donegal" whose passenger list includes, in order listed somewhat randomly, with birth year, these Spences: Patrick 1717, Mary 1707, Joseph 1747, Robert 1751,James 1746, Sarah,1747, Patrick 1717, Mary 1707, Joseph 1747, Robert 1751, Jannet 1749,James 1746, Sarah 1747, David 1739, Martha 1743, Mary 1761, David 1707,
Robert 1755, Jannet 1727, Martha 1759, Adam 1765, Agnes 1751,Mary 1747, Eleanor 1750.

Not all of these Spences settled in Newberry. I have not learned the port departure but I will guess that this total list of approximately 0f 300 passengers represent every County in northern Ireland. The "Earl of Donegal" landed in Charlestown, SC in 1767. Essentially all family heads applied for "Bounty Lands" recently authorized by the State of SC.

Re: Sinclair Spence Antrim Co., Ireland

Afternoon,

My name is Mark Spence. I am Northern Irish and have had some success in following the male line back to Ballykennedy in Co.Antrim.

There are two Ballykennedy Townlands in Antrim. The one you mention near Nutts Corner is the one I am interested in.

My family are shown on the 1851 census. Margaret is shown as a widow, however, her likley husband, Alexander Spence is shown as having died in Ballykennedy in 1849.

I have no idea how or if the families were linked.

Do any of these names ring a bell?

The children of Isabella Spence and Peter Merriman (my Great Grandfather) were Margaret Ann Sinclair Merriman born 17th April 1863 and John J Merriman born 1865. She and the children moved with him from Orkney to Leslie Fife sometime after the birth of their son John in 1865. She died in Leslie Fife age 37 in 1873.
Peter Merriman was remarried in 1874 to Jean Low and they had 4 other children who all lived in Leslie Fife. My father was the youngest of those children.
Does that answer your question?

I believe that you are correct. However, I haven't found any "proof" of that connection. There is circumstantial evidence, but I haven't found records for those folks definitely connecting them. Do you have anything else on that line? I have Burwell's Rev. War record and where he filed for pension. Thanks for your help.

Hi I came across your question about Janet Grace Spence. She was a sister to my Gg/grandfather. A very interesting family. I do family research so would be keen to hear what you can tell about her and to pass on any info about the family. Hope to hear from you.

Catherine

Hi, Raymond.
When did your Spence family come to North America and who was it? My Spence family was in Dunfermline and Dysart in Fife in the 1700s. I also have data files on births and marriages of Spences in Scotland.
Regards,
Adam Spence.
