Hi

My husband is related to Edwin J Spiers

This may sound like a strange question but do you know of any of the Spiers family that have RP (retinitis pigmentosa or rod & cone dystrophy).

Edwin had a son also called Edwin who was noted as Blind on the census material.

But I have been unable to find any others and just wondered if you have come across this.

Hello T.Lynch,
I am hoping to find a male Spiers of the Clanmaghery families who would be willing to test his Y-DNA for comparison with other Spiers from Co.Down. This would tell us if these Spiers families all descend from the same ancestor. Do you have any male Spiers relatives?
Alex
She married Howard Daniel Boring in Pennssylvania about 1915 or so, and died in 1973 in Cambria County PA. I don't know much of her. From what my wife's mother told me, she beleive Bessie's dad was Matthew. I have looked at 1900 US Census for "Bessie Bathea Spiers" and came up with last name of "Spears" in Carroll Twp., Cambria Co., PA. Any additional information will be helpful.

Hi Peter Durrant,

I have just started researching my antecedents and am looking to go back beyond Peter Baptiste Spiers. Peter is my paternal great great grandfather, Frederick my great grandfather etc. The first record I have is Frederick's marriage in 1859 - I have the certificate and Peter's occupation is given as Rector of St ??? College (could be Croix or Croive). Frederick was born in Guernsey (as you have said) and is described as a mariner / seaman / sailmaker but the first UK census record of him is 1881. He died in 1905

Do you have any better information - are you related to Frederick

Regards,

John Spiers

I believe that my great, great great grandfather George Graham was born in Fermanagh but moved with his parents James and Jane (nee Thomson)and his siblings to Stonehouse, Lanarkshire. Sometime before 1874. In 1874 George and his wife Sydney Thomson marries in Stonehouse. I believe however, that Sydney was also from Ireland (don't know where, though). James Graham parents were George Graham and Nancy Spiers, James were Alexander Thomson and Catherine Bruce and Sydney's parent were John Thomson and Dorothea (I think) Johnstone.

Does anyone know of the Graham and Thomson families?

PS I'm also posting this in the Surnames list.
Hi Sabrina,
Absolutely, I would love that if you could scan me a copy of the picture! Also if you could share any info you have about her. I have a big question mark about her, although I think she was the child of Tom Spiers and Mary Dunn. My grandmother (Beaulah's granddaughter, daughter of Hattie Myrie Crawford) was killed in a car accident before genealogy was even a glint in my eye, so I never got to ask her for information, and I know she would have loved to talk about her family. If you would be so kind, please email me at jorlcummings at earthlink dot net. Thank you so much!!!

Lori

Fascinating DNA findings for SPEIR(S)/SPIER(S)/SPEAR(S)/SPEER(S)

I've been researching my Speir(s) family for about 15 years and after total frustration in figuring out several connections, I decided that maybe DNA might be a way around the missing paper trail. As Speir(s) is my mother's direct line and dna requires a male carrying the same Y chromosome of your ancestor, it was necessary for me to solicit the aid of a fourth cousin, who was kind enough to be our donor.

We have only received the results of our 37 marker test in the past week, and even though it may take us a while to find the matches we need to resolve some of the questions I have, I feel extremely satisfied with our investment and the information that we have gleened from those who have proven to be our distant ancestors!

Here are the things that we have learned:

1. We seem to be the first Speir(s) who lived in Scotland AFTER 1700 to have done DNA.

2. We did have some very good matches and they all shared some variation of our surname. We all have been assigned to the haplotype I2b1. These Speir appear to have lived in Scotland around 1600 and then moved to Ireland. Most of them now use the SPEER/SPEER spellings.

3. The SPEER researchers in this project have evidence that suggests that their line can be traced back to a nobleman by the name of Milius Speire or Spär. Malius married Eupheimia whose lineage can be directly traced back to BOTH the King of Norway and the King of Scotland.

4. As all Speir(s) members of our project seem to fall into two main types, I strongly feel that we are going to find that ALL of the Speir(s) of the Ayrshire and Renfrewshire are related. The only question will be how far back we have to go to find that connection. A 37 marker test can't tell you the exact way that you are related, but it can give you a pretty good idea of the time period where you share a common ancestor. Take a look at the project at the link below, and see for yourself!

Link to the Y-DNA Spears Project:
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/spears/results

You can see that almost all of us share the same haplotype and similar markers.

Clearly DNA can only be a good tool if there is a sizeable pool of donors with your surname and from the same geographic location. So the more Speir(s) who join us, the more we all can benefit in ALL learning more about our past.

Please contact me if you care to share information on Speir(s) or want to know more about DNA testing on EITHER FamilyTreeDNA or Ancestry. (The Ancestry 33 marker test would allow you to compare 31 markers with those in our project).

Janet Akaha

Assuming we're talking about the same Henry Spiers, Henry T. Spiers's father was James Enoch Spiers, who was my GGGG Grandfather through his daughter Mary Jane Spiers, who married John Calhoun Cash, my GGG Grandfather.

James Spiers > Mary Jane Spiers = John Calhoun Cash > Walter Clark Cash > Temple Walter Cash > Temple Clark Cash > Living Cash = Living Goetz > me.

Do you know anything about Henry's ancestors? I don't know anything beyond his father's name (James Enoch (not definite on the middle name, I can't remember where I got that offhand) Spiers, and a suspected but unconfirmed birth and death: b.ca1793 in SC, USA; d.1850/1860 Pike, AL, USA). James married to Mary __??__, b.ca1801 in SC, USA. Her father and mother, according to a census, were Irish and German, respectively.
