We both have trees up on Ancestry.

Search up a tree called "Thomas Spilsbury Rock Worcester" There's a mess of information that focuses on mostly Spilsburys, Sir Bernard and the rest back to Rock.

I'd love to see what else you have that could add into the tree.

Cheers,
Carol

Hi John, Yes, sorry I wasn't too clear. Yes. I am a Spilsbury. My Dad was John Spilsbury from Saskatchewan in 1910. His line traces back to Francis Spilsbury, the silversmith in London c 1740 and then to Edward Spilsbury, a cook in Worcester. Nearly all of the Spilsburys seem to tie back into Thomas of Rock, c1500. There are references found on Spilsburys (and spelling variants) back to the 1360s in Worcester.
How far are you along in your research? There are records of Spilsbury in Australia since it was used as a transportation location. I've not looked at much on that line yet.
Cheers,
Carol

Hi John! Nice too see another Spilsbury, especially one from the Aussie branch. I think my sister, Joanne has looked at your line. I'll check in with her. Bottom line, is most all the Spilsburys trace back to Thomas and Isabel of Rock, Worcester around 1500.

Hi Jan, So sorry not to get back to you sooner. Sadly, other stuff in life gets in the way of genealogy occasionally. I'd love to swap information with you. So often, the women in a family get lost somehow due to lack of recording both names of births and property staying with the males.

The "Lucas" branch, (Elizabeth's brother) is an interesting group, one that sent my sister, a cousin and myself up to the University of British Columbia, to dig through their archives. There was a strong Spilsbury presence in early BC, and it originated with this line. They were also landowners up in Derby. I will pull an excerpt from the main tree together shortly and send it your way.

Regards, Carol

Hi Carol.
Thank you for your reply. Yes I would be interested in anything you may have. I have Francis Ward Spilsbury as Elizabeth's brother, and on her mothers side Anne parents as Henry & Alathea Cotton. I also have Rev John Arden as the brother of Ann. He had a daughter Mary Jane Arden. She married George Woodroff Franklyn. Their daughter Edith Alethea was the 2nd wife of my 2 x g grandfather and also his cousin. If you would like any information on John Henry, Elizabeth's husband I would be happy to share what I have. I have the family back to 1658.

Regards
Jan

Francis Spilsbury and son, Goldsmiths London

While in London recently my sister and I had the pleasure of doing some research at the Guild Hall Library. I am posting biographical notes from a book titled "London Goldsmiths 1697-1837: Their marks and lives..." It identified Edward Spilsbury as the father of Francis Spilsbury I. Descendants of this family include Francis Brockell Spilsbury and son who settled in Canada.

SPILSBURY, Francis I (719-20, 2621) Son of Edward Spilsbury late Citizen and Cook of London, apprenticed to Richard Green 2 November 1708 for eight years. Signatory as journeyman to the petition against assaying the work of foreigners not having served seven years apprenticeship. February 1716. Free , 12 July 1717. First mark entered as large worker, 24 July 1717. First mark entered as large worker, 24 July 1729. Address: Foster Lane. ‘Free Goldsmith’. Livery, March 1737. Second mark, 15 June 1739, same address. Third mark, 12 December 1739. Heal records him as plate worker, Spread Eagle, Foster lane, 1729-39.

SPILSBURY, Francis II (721) Son of the above, born 1733. Free by patrimony, 2 November 1757. Livery, July 1763. Mark entered as small worker 24 November 1767. Address: 24 Gutter Lane. Heal records him here as plate worker, 1767-73, and he so appears at the same address in the Parl. Report list 1773, when he gave evidence to the committee of the leakage of new designs for plate at the Assay Office and of corruption in the staff. He found ‘giving liquor at the Hall’ prevented trouble with the assay. He also informed the committee that ‘he sells his manufactures viz. Cruet Frames, Bottle Stands, Pails, Mustard Pots and Salts in general to shopkeepers in London and receives old silver for the weight of the Plate and Money for the fashion’. He knew of examples of the cutting out of marks but had avoided trouble by not reporting them. He died, 6 August 1793, ‘At Hampstead aged 60, Mr. Spilsbury of Soho Sq. proprietor of the anti-scorbutic drops. He was a silver-smith in Noble St. Cheapside and turned quack about 25 years ago when he first kept a shop in Mount Row Lambeth. By his second wife who survives him he has left a numerous young family.’ (The gentleman’s magazine, p. 773). Robert Spilsbury gold worker (Second VII) may perhaps be connected.

I saw that one of the people you are looking for was a Mary Guest? Is this the same Mary Guest that married Thomas Bishop and had two daughters by the names of Minnie and Lillian?

Spilsbury/Lucas/Ward

Greetings All,

I'm looking for any shred of information on one James Spilsbury who d. 1740 and is buried at St. Nicholas, Alcester. James is the father of Lucas. (Lucas married Dorothy Ward 1740/1741)

From James the line descends to Willington and then across to British Columbia. I've a fair bit of the line filled in from James on down. Am attempting now to tie James into what has become a rather large tree of Spilsburys tracing back to Rock Worcester.

I have found the marriage of Elizabeth Lucas to James Spilsbury in 1712 in Kinwarton. The dates and locations all fit well. James' eldest son as mentioned was Lucas (b. 1714), so I am fairly comfortable with this tentative connection.
Does anyone have any info on this line that may help to prove this out?

I have 2 possible Elizabeth Lucases that may be James wife: Elizabeth Lucas, chr. 5/22/1692 in Rowington and Elizabeth Lucas, chr 10/28/1694 in Meriden. Alas, I cannot find parish records for Meriden, however Rowington's are digitized on Google. The Rowintgon records show Clement Lucas as Elizabeth father. No reference to her mother save for her burial where she is referred to as "Widow Lucas in 1727"

I'll post a similar note on the Lucas board and hope for the best. Marlene from NZ - are you reading this?

Hi Sue, Just been reading your messages to jes Spilsbury, I am not sure if I have answered one of your messages but in case I havent I will give you my link with henry Spilsbury of Plymouth. Henry was the son of Joseph Henry Spilsbury his parents were Benjamin and Caroline (Nee Groat) caroline and Benjamin were also the parents of my Great grandfather Gregory george Spilsbury he was born in Worcester, Caroline also had 2 other children as these children were not recorded on Henry's geneology book, but at the ending of this book henry hoped someone else in the family would solve the mystery of caroline and benjamin as according to the research he conducted for 10years of looking he concluded they were both drowned at sea, this is not the case, benjy is still not found, but I found caroline and her decendants up to present day. There are also henry's sons and who I contacted .and sent them proof of Kinship to their family tree. Kind regards. Vera Spilsbury Bolch

If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated.
I am looking for an Elizabeth Spilsbury, I know she married an Albert H Jones and had a George Jones in 1898.
However, on the 1901 census i have found the family in Stone, Stafford listing her as aged 29 (Born 1872) and born in Ettingshall, Stafford. On the 1837 listings i can only find an Elizabeth born in Leek, Safford.
Secondly i then found a marriage between Elizabeth and Albert H Jones in 1888 listing her age as 18 which would give her birth as (1870). and her fathers name as Matthew. I cannot find a Matthew Spilsbury on the census.
Then on the 1881 census i have found Elizabeth born in Leek in 1872 with the father George Spilsbury.

Help, how do i know which one is George's mother??

THank you

Samantha
My husband is Roberta's son and we have no information on the Spilsburys. Roberta and Esther are deceased and my husband was not raised by Roberta. He never knew them or any family on the Spilsbury side. Maybe you can help. It would be greatly appreciated.
Elle
