I don';t remember seeing this post.
My father was Adolph Spinner (Rafuel Avraham was his Jewish name). He immigrated from Tluste, Austria which was part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and now is in Ukraine. He immigrated in 1922. His father was Meyer Spinner and his father was Eli Kneizer. We think Meyer used his mother's name since many married only religiously not through the civil system. We know Eli had a brother Hersh. Meyer had a brother Joseph. My father had a brother Eli, and sisters Bessie and Fannie. We lived in the Bronx. My father lived in the lower East Side when he first arrived. He was a furrier. No Benjamins....If your family is from either Tluste or Czernowitz, perhaps there is a relationship.

Paula Spinner Schwartz
Avon, CT

We have Spinner relatives who lived in Brooklyn but I do not know of anyone named Milton (Robert). Interestingly, my brother is Milton Leon Spinner and I had an aunt Fanny Spinner. My brother lives in California, but our aunt Fanny died years ago. She'd be about 100 right now if she was alive, but she did live in Brooklyn. Wonder if there's any connection going back another generation. Do you know your grandfather's parents or what town they came from? Where they are buried? Good luck on your search.

Paula Spinner Schwartz

I am new to this so forgive the lack of detail. My grandfather, Milton (Robert) Spinner, was from Brooklyn. I had heard he was of Romanian decent. Definitely Jewish. He met my grandmother while serving in the army in WWII in England.
I met another Spinner in CT and he traced his roots to the Catholic lineage.

Interestingly, my uncle was named Elias Spinner. My father and his siblings came from the town of Tluste which at various times was Poland or Austrian Empire. It is now part of the Ukraine and is called Tovste. Their father was Meyer Spinner whose father was Elias Kneizer. We think the family took the mother's name because there was no civil marriage only religious. Unfortunately, can't seem to trace back any further at this point.

Good luck on your search.

Paula Spinner Schwartz
Avon, CT

Paula,
Thank you for such a quich reply. I have the Francis Elias Spinner family now back to a Peter Spinner, age 13 in Surich, Switzerland. He paid a business tax as a salesman of sorts. As I understand it, the family was Jewish at that time, as was my family (Finger). It was around 1550 when Pope Clement V issued a decree to either convert to Catholism or be killed. My direct family converted to Luthernism while the Spinners from Zurich converted to Catholism and migrated afrom Switzerland to Bavaria and into Werbach. Religious freedom has been an issue since time began, and still is.

I have two Spinner families that are related , but I cannot tie them together. One is the lineage of Francis Elias Spinner, born 1802 in Greman Flats, New York. The other is that of Meinrad Spinner born in 1863 in Werbach, Germany and immigrated to the U.S. in 1888. Both of these Spinner families come from Werbach, Germany. Meinrads father was Nikolous Spinner born about 1840 in Werbach. These two families should come together somewhere in the 1700's in Werbach

I have never been able to find out the names of her parents or where her family may have come from. It has been said in our family that their is Native American blood in that part of the family somewhere.
Thanks!

Hi Paula,

It looks like you may have ended up in the middle of a message exchange between Sandy Katz Spinner and me. I think you and I have exchanged info in the past. According to JewishGen, Starry Sambor is 122.7 miles WNW of Tovste. So, not very close but not so far that there couldn't have been a relationship between your branch and mine going back 3-4 generations before our great or great great grandparents.

All the best,

Gary

The family history says they were Kohanim. Yakov Kopel's name is listed as Ya K ha Kohen Spinner. He married Hentsha Eress whose mother's maiden name was Grasow. Anything sound familiar?

I can't imagine that my husband's grandfather, Yakov Kopel, did not have any siblings. His father was Yitzhak. -Might Yitzhak = Izick? By my estimate, Yakov Kopel who was said to be born in 1860 would have had parents born in 1830-40. Does this time frame coincide?

I'd also be interested in the Katz side of your family.

I presume your message was directed to me, since my mother's maiden name was Spinner, my last name is Katz and my wife's maiden name is Rosen.

Starry Sambor, where my Spinner ancestors were from, is just 26.0 miles SSE of Przemysl.

Given both your husband's and my Spinners are Cohanim, the naming traditions are similar, and the distance apart is relatively close, I'd venture to say we're from the same Spinner family.

My GGF Spinner had an uncle named Koppel, a brother named Izick (first born) and a great uncle named Issak.

Has your husband done any DNA testing? My mom, Shirley Spinner Katz, has been tested on 23andMe, as have I. We also have a male Spinner cousin in Texas, who has indicated a willingness to be tested. We could find out approximately how recently your husband and I (or my mom) are related through DNA testing, which might help us tie the two families directly together.

All the best,

Gary Katz

My father was named Ralph Abraham Spinner but called Adolph in the USA. His father was Meier Spinner. His mother's maiden name was Spinner, but his father was Eli Kneizer Typically Jewish marriages were not "official" so children were named after mother's surnames. Meier or Meyer was born in 1876 and my father in 1898. They came from Tluste(now Tovste, Ukraine) in what was Austrian Empire and now the Ukraine. Meier Spinner died in 1946 had a brother, Joseph(Yosef ben Eliyahu) Spinner who died in 1930. They lived in New York City with my father eventually in the Bronx and his siblings in Brooklyn. My dad died in 1972.
I'm unfamiliar with the town Przemysl. Wondering if it was nearby. Let's keep trying for a connection. What did you mean three out of four names?

Paula Spinner Schwartz
Avon, CT

My husband's family are Jewish Spinners (kohenim) from Przemysl, Ukraine. His grandfather Yaakov Koppel Spinner was born around 1860 in Przemysl. He was the son of Yizhak and Chana Spinner who had 16 children together. Do we have any relatives in common?

Also, my maiden name is Katz. My mother's maiden name is Rosen. All born in NYC.

How strange that we have three out of four names connected.

I checked Google maps and your town Stary Sambor is about 4 hours (present day travel) from my Spinner family in Tluste (presently Tovste, Ukraine). As much as I'd like to see a connection, most of the names are not familiar to me. My father was Ralph Abraham Spinner (known as Adolph when he immigrated to NYC in 1921). He was the son of Meyer Spinner(Meier ben Eliah) and his father was Eli Kneizer (Eliah ben ?). Meyer took his mother's name since many of these marriages were not in the civil courts and they retained mother's name. Meyer married Simi Shiller and they had four children: Ralph Abraham, Fannie, Bessie and Al (Eliah). He immigrated prior to my father coming with his mother and siblings. They settled in Manhattan, Brooklyn and my family in the Bronx. My father married Esther Siebenberg whose family also came from Tluste and also Buchach, just north of Tluste. Other names in the family are Langholtz, Sessler.....

Have you checked JewishGen site? Perhaps there is a connection so stay in touch and let me know what you've found. I just attended the Jewish Genealogy convention in LA and found many new sources of information. Who knows?

Paula Spinner Schwartz

My mom is a Spinner descendent of Jewish Ashkenazi ancestry. Her grandfather, Chaskel (Charles in the US) was born in Stary Sambor (formerly Galicia/Austria, now Ukraine), which is also close to Lviv. Chaskel Spinner was the son of Yehuda Leib, who was the son of Yehoshua Zev (Osias), who was the son of Moshe Aron. Other common given names in the family were Koppel, Aron, Abraham, Isak, Itte, Malka and Gittel. Associated families include Schneider, Teitelbaum, Adolf, Klein, Schulberg, Silberg, Finkelstein, Kessler, Weingarten, Weidinger,Gottesman, Holzmann and Fink.

Gary Katz

Lviv is nearby and perhaps there is a connection. My fathr was trained as a furrier and came to this country in 1922. For a time they lived in Czernowitz where his grandmother Raisel was a caterer. I'd be interested in hearing about the Spinners and their prominence in the town. I'm not certain but I think my father and his father took their mother's name which was Spinner.

Do you know anything about your Spinner family? Our family came from a town in what is now Ukraine (was Poland, was Austria) called Tluste (in Yiddish) and is now called Tovste. My dad's name was Adolph Spinner and he had two sisters, Bessie and Fanny and a brother Al. We lived in the Bronx. My father was a furrier. Does anything ring a bell? My father arrived in 1922, but his father Meier Spinner came much earlier.
