We couldn't be more far apart....and the NJ Spragg's did not leave much info around, per se. For instance, MY John Spragg never mentions his wife when he bought land, etc. in 1796 in West Creek, NJ (I had to go to Freehold Courthouse for info) as Ocean became its' own county in 1850...before that, it was part of Monmouth Co.

enjoy your Easter , Martha.....with your family.

thanks so much for the info on "new thread" etc.
Boy, things really get complicated.
I have done more researching on the Seaman's and the Spragg's this afternoon. Takes a great deal of time.
Hope to understand all this...will get back to you later.
By the way, what state do you come from ??

You'll always be a genius to me because of the Seaman and Sprag information. I spend plenty of time feeling dumb myself, though. I just had to look for "new thread". It only appears after you click on a message and before you try to respond to it. So, when I clicked on your message I could see "Prev Thread, Next Thread" (top right) and "New Thread" (top left). Then I clicked on reply and it all disappeared. So, I just clicked on another message and there they are. New thread is for when you want to start a new topic, such as Budd or Burlington County NJ names. I just went to the Ancestry Community for locations and clicked on US > New Jersey > Burlington and did a search for Sprag* and there were about four and a half posts. Unlike Genforum, which has its' own advantages, if you search all boards, you can find any post for your subject. That might work for an unusual name, like Wickhasset, but you might get too many results for Sarah Smith. I would like to find out how many Sprag* made it to Burlington county. That's something else handy about Ancestry. You can search for Sprag, Spragg and Spraque with Spraq*. Can't do that at Genforum. I will probably try to start a new thread tomorrow or Monday. This weekend is going to be a bit hectic with stepkids and stepgrandkids:)

Hi Ann, our ancestors must have known each other way back. I have seen the name Budd in Burlington County. There are a lot of familliar names in Jacobstown Baptist. My 2nd great grandparents, Tanton Swaim and Rebecca Powell were married at Pemberton or Mt. Holly in 1846. The Swaims were mostly Methodist. They are descended from Thys Barentsen who came to Staten Island from the Netherlands abt. 1661. They were Dutch Reform before they were Methodist. Tanton's uncle Mathias Swaim was a founding member of the Wrightstown, Penny Hill Methodist Church in New Hanover Twp, Burlington County. Tanton's father Gabriel Swaim filled out the family information in William and Hannah (Spraq?) Turner' family Bible. My late husband was a Wyckoff, also descended from a Dutch immigrant to New Amsterdam. His mother was a Leeds and her family came from Burlington, NJ. A bio of Benjamin Franklin mention's her ancestor, Daniel Leeds, who published an Almanac before Franklin published his. Our families headed west in the 1850s, but they were in Burlington early, so there is still a lot of undiscovered history there! I visted New Jersey years ago before I knew I had ancestors from there. Now I want to go back and spend some time!

Seaman was written in so many ways, Martha....I've seen it written " Symonds." You've got me interested in Jacobstown Cemetery...
My maiden name is Stratton and my Grandfather, Albert Budd Stratton, was born in Buddtown, Burlington Co., NJ His father was a Benjamin F. Stratton and he was a "sawyer" and had m. a Sarah H. Murphy in Pemberton Methodist Church. After so many yrs., I feel my Benjamin must have been orphaned. (church burned down where they were m...records lost) Albert B. Stratton married my grandmother, mary Alvaretta Sprague and they lived in Beach Haven, NJ and that's where I was born. This is where my Spragg interest comes from. I basically come from the NY Spragg's, I have concluded. My grandmother's father was a James Spragg who m. a Lydia Haywood, etc. I won't go into all now.BUT, my John's father came from a John Sprague who m. Sarah Seaman or he comes from a James Spragg who m. a Rachel Perkins. And James was a son of Nehemiah Spragg and married in St. George's church in Hempstead, Long Isl...Have you ever gone into "The Sprague Project" on your PC?? Amazing stuff on Spragg/Sprague's.
Genealogy is definitely an "addiction." thanks for all. your interesting info. On the Web, about a yr. ago, there was a list of many, many Seaman's....I cannot locate it at the present. It's late & I must hit the sack !

Thanks Ann, This is Great information. You found a definite connection for Phebe, Hannah is a family name, your dates not only do not disprove the date in the Turner bible for Sarah Simons Sprag birth, but even help to confirm this as a viable date. According to the Rev. War papers for William and Hannah Turner, neither knew how to read or write. Their Bible pages were filled in by a daughter's father-in-law. Sarah's last names were probably written as a best guess. I see from some of your other posts that there are also family connections in the New Hanover, Burlington County, NJ area? This is where William and Hannah (Sprag?) Turner lived and died.

Thanks, Ann. Now you have the attention of at least three of us re: Sarah Seaman Sprag. Do any of your references give a birth date for Sarah and a source for such a birth date? Based on the marriage date of Sarah's parents, it looks like the date in the Turner bible could be correct for this Sarah if there is not some credible conflicting date.

I think my Sarah who married John Spragg was probably born around 1740 which would be close to your date. I cannot prove it is Sarah Seaman because my Reed Family Bible records does not give her maiden name, but I havent been able to find another Sarah and John Spragg anywhere, and the atrea and timeframe would be the same. John and Saran are mentioned in the Bibe records as parents of Phebe Spragg who married Doughty Reed.

Hi Cheryl, This is a handwritten entry on the birth page in the William Turner family Bible submitted with the William and Hannah Turner Am. Rev. pension papers. It lists a Sarah Sprag and then a Sarah Simons and both have the same birthdate. The entries are wriiten one below the other and the same birthdate is written twice.

This certainly sounds like Sarah Seaman Sprag could be Hannah Turner's mother, Sarah Simons Sprag b.20 Nov 1739. I have seen family trees that give Sarah's birthdate at 1745, but wonder if that is just an estimated birth date?

I am Robert Van Wicklen, trying to verify the name of my grandfather, George's father. My grandfather, George Van Wicklen according to 1930 census data was born around 1880 and I know he died in 1947 and lived in Greenpoint Brooklyn.
My cousin told me our great-grandfather was Samuel Van Wicklen (father of George), but I haven't been able to verify that in census data. I can't find any connection
between Samuel Van Wicklen and George Van Wicklen. The 1900 census shows Samuel as married to Mary D. Van wicklen with 4 daughters: hattie, Effie, Edna and Mabel. Any ideas would be appreciated.

A couple of us have been working of this name for a long time from a William Turner family bible:
Sarah Spray / Sprag b. 11/20/1739
Sarah Simmons b. 11/20/1739
I have found a couple of places where Seamons was pronounced Simmons (and hence spelled that way?)
We are going on the assumption that this is the same person and one name is the married name and the other is the maiden name. The most promising match so far is John Spragg and Sarah Seaman.
William Turner was married to Hannah in New Hanover, Burlington, NJ. and we have wondered if the Sarah Simmons in the Turner bible could be Hannah's mother. Hannah was b. in NJ 02 Apr 1768. We are also beginning to wonder if Hannah could be Phebe's sister?

This bio mentions a Richard Sprague from Burlington:
From the book "HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY, COUNTIES OF WHITE AND PULASKI INDIANA. Historical and Biographical. Illustrated. Chicago; F. A. Battey & CO., Publishers. 1883."
page 298, Honey Creek Township, White County, Indiana
"JAMES SPRAGUE was born in Burlington County, New Jersey, September 21, 1837, and is the second of the four children born to RICHARD and REBECCA A. (PETTIT) SPRAGUE, both natives of New Jersey. At the age of eight years, JAMES SPRAGUE lost his mother, and thereafter , until twenty-one made his home with JACOB SUTTS. He then worked out at farming until the spring of 1860, when he came to Monticello, this county (White County); remained a short time, and then went to Warren County, where he farmed until August, 1861, when he enlisted in Company H, Tenth Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and served till mustered out at Indianapolis, in September, 1864, having taken part in the battles of Mill Springs, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, and the Atlanta campaign, and numerous skirmishes and minor engagements. He next farmed as a hired hand for three years, near Monticello, and then on shares in Big Creek Township about eight years. In the spring of 1875, he bought eighty acres of wild land in this township, which he has since improved, and on which he still resides. October 30, 1866, he married MARY A. MOORE, a native of Union Township, and a daughter of JAMES P. and SARAH (WORTHINGTON) MOORE, who were among the early settlers of this county. To this union six children have been born, four yet living - ELSIE L., CHESTER S., LORETTA C. and JAMES A. In politics, MR. SPRAGUE is a Republican, and for four years was assessor of Big Creek Township, and he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church."
