Thank you so much for so much info. All these surnames are very familiar(we live in West Creek in an old family home), and so many listed are in Gram Hilda Cranmer's line.

You've filled in some gaps. Thank you!

We still have questions about Eugene & Anna(Kelly) Cranmer's 4th child-Ann---as Gram Hilda never spoke to us about her, and neither did Aunt Geneva. Haven't been able to find more current info on Ann either. But will keep looking.

The families are so large & braided, and they re-use so many of the given names it can be a challenge to keep the different generations correct in my files & for researching.

I also do research for the local historical society---so I have acccess to some old documents about the town---besides what Gram Hilda saved in the attic. I may even have pics of some of those mentioned in your post.

I hope to get back to you on this board soon---I will try hard---so I can see if I can help you with your research for your John or James Sprague.

I have hope I will find more info for both of us soon. I know a member of the Hist. Soc. who can get me his info on the Pharo lines too.

Pray that God is willing to let the living allow me free time to do what I love to do soon---Family & Historic Research!!! Life has ust been to busy lately---and my Hubby retires soon---so MAYBE he'll take over some of my chores. (He loves to do my military research too.)

Hello - I am trying to find information on a Ralph Sprague, born somtime around 1900, in New York. He married, before 1930, to Mary Reilly, who was also born in New York. They had one known child, a son named Ralph, born in 1930, in New York. Ralph and Mary separated while their son was a small child, and Mary later married Frank Malloy. Frank raised the child Ralph as his own, and Ralph took the Malloy name. Not known if Frank actually adopted Ralph. Ralph (Sprague) Malloy married Frances Viola, and they still live in New York, but do not know anything about Ralph, who left the family. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.
Jill Lyles
mssngdale@aol.com

Jeremiah Spragg b. 13, Jan. 1807 West Creek, NJ married a Maria Gaskill on 28, Dec. 1829 (or Nov.)

They had 7 children: Sarah who m. William Kelly, Phoebe married Wm. Southwick, James m. Lydia Haywood (my gr. grandfather), Reuben m. Mary Andrews, Mary Elizabdeth, (died young), Ann Eliza (b. 21, mar. 1839--died 3, Feb. 1920) m. Arthur T. Willits 11,May 1864 (buried in West Creek, NJ), Henry Elwood, and Jedremiah Adolphus,d. as a baby. So, Sarah (above) and Ann Eliza were sisters.
I do have the newspaper clipping of Ann's Willits estate.

Jeremiah's father was a John Spragg who m. a Mary (Key)???
John and Mary lived next door to son, Jeremiah in 1850.

I have searched for yrs. concerning my John's father. My guess, at the present, is that it was either James Sprague who m. Rachel Perkins or a John Sprague who m. a Sarah Seaman. I will not go into dates at the present. And, Mary's last name is down in the records as Mary Key, but there actually is not a deFinite proof, but close to it that it is "Key." As to Arthur T. Willits, his father was a John Willits who m. Hannah Thompson in 1819. Arthur first m. a Martha Pharo) and 2nd, Ann Eliza Spragg. The Willits family goes back to a Richard Willits (born in England ca. 1618/22) and he m. a Mary Washburn . They came to USA ca. 1648/49 and he died in Hempstead, NY ca. 1688. Richard and Mary had Hope Willits (male) who m. Mercy Langdon.

Next on the agenda: Eugene F. Cranmer m. as his 2nd wife: Anna Maria Kelly, daug. of Wm. and Sarah(Sprague) Kelly. They were married on 3, January 1888. She was b. 1865. In 1900Eugene was a grocer in West C reek, NJ and in 1910 postmaster. In 1920 Anna was the postmistress at West Creek. Source: Descendants of Wm. Cranmer by Nurray & Jean Harris. In this Bk. it states that Eugene and Anna had 4 children. (Geneva, Paul, Hilda, and Ann who m. (unknown) Kelly.
Hopefully, I have helped somewhat. It's late (2:15 AM and I must get to bed. God bless.

Hi Diana,

Actually... yes! Great Grandpa Max had that Lucinda's parents were Solomon Sprague and Myraba Cross. Solomon is in the same cemetery the rest of the Brails are in Dansville. Both are Mayflower descendants. Another Cross/Paine researcher made the connection from there though for me.

Ginny

Hi. Just reading message boards for Brail. Did you ever get your answer on Lucinda Sprague Brail? Looked at the Dansville, Steuben, New York Census. In 1830 there is a Jefersone Sprague. In 1840 this is a Joseph Sprague and a Solomon Sprague.

I can't believe that this post has been up for 12 years. I have been looking for my dad's side since 1999. Finally another relative. Sprague is my maiden name. The son of Annie and Henry--Edward is my grandfather on my father's side. I have been working on this tree for about 10 years on and off. The family name was also spelled Spragg up until around 1800's, the Sprague family has been here since the year of the Mayflower--well at least of what I found. Records get hard to find, and read.
Henry's parents are Samuel and Charlotte, siblings are Mary E and John J.

John Johnson Marsh (1785-1872) of East Dorset, VT had two wives, about which little is known, and we suspect that one or both were Spragues. His first wife was Laura and with her he had a son, George S. Marsh b. Mar 28, 1818. Two months later, Laura died, and her heartfelt and beautiful tombstone is in the East Dorset Cemetery, George survived many years, but he and his wives had no surviving children that I have found.

Johnson then married Olive, and by her had one son, John Sprague Marsh, born in 1823 or 24. John Sprague Marsh, and later his father, went to Canada, where they had been granted land. He was married twice and 7 children by each wife, a number of them becoming quite prominent.

Just working with the One World Tree, which is good for hints and possible relationship, I have found John Sprague, born 1765 living in Winhall, a typical Vermont township 6 miles by 6 miles, and in this case so mountainous
and infertile that few people live there. The census has the town listed at the end of the Manchester, Vt. census, a much larger town.

Listed there are his children Jonathan, Wyman, and Isaac, and one or two entries in Ancestry suggest there was also a John.

I suspect that one of the children, perhaps John, had
a daughter named Olive, or perhaps Laura or both. the only names I found posted, however, were son's names, although the census shows there were daughters.

Interestingly, a John Marsh and his wife in 1820 were living on Johnson Marsh's land, perhaps as a farm hand or tenant. The couple was young 16-24 with no children, but I ssuspect this John Marsh was a brother to one of John Johnson Marsh's wives.

Any help graciously received.

Thanks for your reply.

Actually, after I posted my query, I found his obit listed in "The Morning Oregonian", the Wednesday Nov. 7, 1934 editon, Page 18. It does not list his parents, but says he was born Sept. 11, 1856 Youngstown, OH, died Seaside, OR. Interred "today" in Lone Fir Cemetery.

"Widow Mrs. Virginia Sprague, Seaside; two daughters, Mrs. Lydia Brown of Hoquiam, Wash., Mabel Tracy of Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Mrs. J. C. McCauley and Mrs. S. C. Irwin, both of Los Angeles; and three brothers, Charles Sprague of Portland, John L. Sprague of Ocean Park and William Sprague of Glendale, Cal."

Lydia & Mabel are his daughters with his first wife, Lottie Dewoody.

Maybe with the information on his siblings in his obit you can determine who his parents were.

The only difference with census records is that James says his mother was b. W. Indies, and I have seen other places that say she was b. Ireland.

If you wish to have a copy of this obit, let me know and I can email it to you.

James is listed as buried at Lone Fir Cemetery on FindAGrave.com:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=sp...;

Oregon, Death Index, 1898-2008
Name: James Sprague
Death Date: 4 Nov 1934
Death Place: Clatsop
Spouse: Virginia
Certificate: 184
Source Citation: 1966-1970 Death Index, Oregon State Library, Oregon Death Index A-L, 1931-1941
(Ancestry.com)

Seaside, Oregon is in Clatsop County.
Can you tell me anything about Edwin's son, James? Would he be the one that married Lottie/Lollie Dewoody of PA, daughter of William Dewoody & Eliza (Elizabeth?) Gillespie?

I found a J. H. & Lottie Sprague in the 1880 Census in Oregon, he b. OH and she b. PA. Is this James?

I am interested in a daughter, Mabel C. Sprague, b. OR, c 1894, that married Earl Arthur Tracy, b. 1887 in Nebraska. They lived in Washington state. Both Earl & Mabel died in WA in 1974.

Thanks.

Hi, I purchased a graduation of Arthur at a local antique fair this weekend (Coburg, OR). Arthur was the son of Henry Thomas Sprague and Caroline Ann "Carrie" Sprague. The family was from Pennsylvania, but Arthur resided in Elgin and Portland, OR and then California. He married to Esther Sommerville and had at least 4 known children Elizabeth, Mary, Robert and Arthur Sprague.

EDIT: This post was originally to find a relative who wanted the original. The photo has been claimed, however I'll leave this post up so that other interested relatives can still see the attached scan. :)

Terri,
Findagrave only has pictures if someone volunteered to take them. There is a lady that my sister in law has contacted who walked to the cemetery and found that Charles, Sara, Mattie, and Betsy are together and there is an empty spot between them. The geneologist found the obituary for Thomas and he died 12/26/1882. She is going to send confirmation of the obits to my sister in law. I am not sure this email to your aol address will go so will also post this to the Ancestry site. I have William C Spragues information down to today. I can send it to you but don't know how to send it via email. My home phone is 517-646-6942. Betty was the wife of Thomas. Her name was Betty(Betsy) or Elizabeth? Chandler. The headstone notes w of Thomas Jefferson Sprague. When I get the information from the gal in MO I will let you know if there is more information. We don't have his wife as Elizabeth Glaze......I will check into that further. I like to have "proof" for my tree and will check whatever records I can to see if there is any in Connecticut.

Ann

Hi Ann,
Thanks for writing. Thanks for the date of death of Charles Sprague. I tried looking at Find-A-Grave for photos of the Sprague gravestones, but didn't find them there in either Double Branch Cemetery or Oakhill Cemetery in Bates Co., MO. I don't understand why it didn't show them. Do you have the date of death of Sarah Jane (Todd) Sprague? Sarah Jane's father, Alfred Todd, and my g-g-g grandfather, Alanson Todd, were brothers.

The Thomas you are referring to is Thomas Jefferson Sprague, but who is Betty? Is that his wife, Elizabeth Glaze?

Thomas Jefferson Sprague's parents were Thomas and Lucy (Randall) Sprague, Jr. Thomas Sprague, Jr., son of Thomas and Hannah (Cobb) Sprague, Sr., was born 30 May 1774 in Union, Tolland County, Connecticut and died 27 Jun 1843 in Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut, age sixty-nine. Thomas Sprague married Lucy Randall about 1800 in Union, Tolland County, Connecticut. Lucy Randall was born 11 Apr 1778 in Plymouth, Windsor County, Vermont and died 09 Oct 1851 in Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut, age seventy-three.

Thomas Sprague, Sr. was born about 1749 in Union, Tolland County, Connecticut. Thomas Sprague married Hannah Cobb in 1773 in Union, Tolland County, Connecticut. Hannah Cobb was born about 1753 in Union, Tolland County, Connecticut.

Terri

Re: Sprague, Wesley/Susan Landers Married - Ohio & MI

Wesley Sprague was the child of David Sprague and Barbary Ferguson (Furguson/Forgeson) Sprague, born in 1825 range in Lake County Ohio. I found Barbary's grave in the Joplin-Law grave site which is located on the Chagrin River on Johnny Cake Rd in a families back yard. Barbary was borned to John Furguson and Nellie Mclean (search the records on Familysearch.com the Morman website) in New Jersey. John later married Mary Campbell who was a girl that was captured by the indians in Ohio but somehow released and married John. They held her in a cave in the Lake County area that is know referred to as the "Mary Campbell" Cave. John lived in WIlloughby, Lake County Ohio and owned a grist mill referred to as the Eagle Mill. He was born on Christmas day 1756 West Farms, Westchester County NY. He died April 5th 1841 at the home of his son Leggett, buried in Willoughby Ridge. His grandfather was Hezekiah. If you check my site on ancestory which is public you can find Susan's information that I have as well. Who are you looking for?
