There were several Springs plantations in NC and SC that were owned by John Springs III. Some were inherited from his father and others he built himself. Two were located in the Rock Hill and Fort Mill vicinity. The oldest among the two is Springfield, which is in Fort Mill and the other one was Springsteen, which was located in Rock Hill. Springsteen no longer exists as it was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. Both were owned by John Springs III and upon his death he turned over Springfield to his son Andrew Baxter Springs and Springsteen to his other son, Richard Austin Springs. Grandison was given to Richard Austin (along with a list of other enslaved persons), according to a book written by Katherine Wooten Springs titled “The Squires of Springfield”. That is why Grandison is listed in the census as living in "Catawba", which is just a few miles south east of the former Springsteen plantation near the Catawba Indian reservation. Her father Fred Springs was a cousin to Eliott White Springs and my grandmother told me we are direct descendants of Adam Alexander Springs. But that's as much as I know.
Granderson/Grandison Springs

Hello everyone my name is Pierre Springs. I see several people looking for descendants of Granderson/Grandison Springs of York County, South Carolina. I have recently done research on my family on ancestry.com & information from my elder family members & I want to share this information with everyone & hope I get a response to my missing link.

1. My Grand Mother was Ruth Springs
2. Her Father was Thomas Springs
3. His Father was Eli Springs Jr. Born March 1868 in North Carolina maybe in the pineville/mecklenburg/charlotte area.
4. His Father was Eli Springs Sr. Born in 1815 in Maryland.

Eli Springs Sr. stated that he was born in Maryland in 1815. I got that information from the 1880 census in Pineville,Mecklenburg, NC and when I saw that information I looked on ancestry.com for any Springs' in Maryland & that's when Granderson/Grandison Springs name came up. His information stated that he was B. in Maryand 1806 also Africa & South Carolina areas also came up with Granderson/Grandisons' name. I beleive that Granderson/Grandison was not born in Maryland but the B. stands for bought to America in 1806. I think Granderson was a young man maybe around 12-13 yrs. old when he arrived in Maryland off a slave ship & a slaveowner from Maryland purchased him. He was proably placed with a young slave girl to breed with & Eli Sr. was born that's why Eli Springs Sr. stated he was born in Maryland then sometime passed & I'm thinking that the owner of The Springfield Plantation named John Springs III in York South Carolina purchased Granderson/Grandison & Eli Springs Sr. as a package & they took on the slave owners last name of Springs and they were slaves on The SpringField Plantation. I just need someone to confirm my ideas, I've also noticed that some of you on ancestry are searching for the missing descendants of Granderson/Grandison well I think that my line of Springs might be the missing descendants. My Grandmother Ruth Springs passed down the story that her grandfather (Eli Springs Jr,) told her of how there were two sets of Springs in his family in York South Carolina, a dark skinned set and a light skinned set & they did not get along to good because of their differnt skin colors & the dark skinned set moved away from York, SC & headed to Mecklenburg County/Charlotte, NC area & my grandmother stated that she had cousins in York County, SC. I have tons of information. So if this information sounds like it could be helpful to any one please contact me. Thanks alt

I have tried for several years to get good info on Adam Alexander Springs, father of Mary Louisa Springs Little. I have a copy of his will, a brief article from the Gaston County Library and a copy of his diploma from UNC. What I don't have is any information on his marriage - I don't know who Mary Louisa's mother was, and I can't find any official record of her birth in North Carolina. I have her marriage bond to William Little and have visited her gravesite in Blacksburg, SC. Any information you have on this would be super.
Do you need the family history going back from Adam Alexander? I have quite a lot going back to the Springsteens who first arrived in New Amsterdam. I am writing a detailed family history that I expect to complete this summer. If you'd like to know when it is available, just let me know. Mary

Hi, I am new to the Spring line. I've just completed my DNA testing and discovered the connection. My family story starts about 1829 in Tennessee.with a woman named Charity who was of predominately Native American (Cherokee?) heritage. She married a Ned Gold in Tennesee and produced two daughters, Rebecca and Georgia. She moved to Oklahoma in 1893 to take advantage of the land promised to the relocated Cherokee nation. I am seeking the name and birthplace of Charity's mother as well as that woman's ethnicity. Maybe we can piece our stories together.
