Hi Sharon...The only info. I found was where Enos arrived in Sydney June 23, 1913; no children listed. I can't see him going that far with young children by himself. Could he have left the children with someone else; maybe Nellie's family? If you find anything out about the children; please let me know. I'll let you know what other info. I may find.
Hi Carol-I have just found a Springthorp(e)connection and noticed your message although it was a number of years ago I thought I would contact you anyway.
Clara was the sister of Enos Knowles(b.1878) who after the death of his first wife Nellie(b.1883) married my great aunt Minnie Earnshaw (b.1889).
Clara and Enos were children of Enos Knowles (B.1845) and Sarah (B.1843)
I was looking into the Knowles family as when Enos married Minnie he had children from his first marriage--according to the family Enos left Minnie and went off to start a new life in Australia but no one knew if he went on his own or with any of the children.I do not know of any divorce and Minnie was always known as Mrs Knowles-
If you have any other information I would love to hear from you
Regards Sharon

Hi there saw your message re Clara (Knowles) Springthorpe (1867) from Langley Mill.
My interest is in her brother Enos (1877)also from Langley Mill and I wondered if you had any information about him or his children.
His first wife was called Nellie (1882) and they had 5 children Reginald (1902) Richard (1903) Ethel(1905) Gertrude(1906) and Henry(1908) Nellie had died by 1911 and a Minnie Earnshaw was living with them as housekeeper and she eventually married Enos.
Minnie and my grandfather were brought up as brother and sister and were very close.
Minnie was very fond of the children and cared for them - the family do not know why but Enos went off to Austrailia - Minnie did not go with him and we do not know if the children went with him
It would be of interest to find out what happened to them.Good luck wiith your searches and thank you Sharon Kirk

Hi Carol,
Yes we were in touch some time ago. I have been researching other areas of my tree and have come back to the Springthorpes because of a message I saw on these boards. It was from a Jacqui Moreton and was posted several years ago saying she was researching her grandmother's family. Her grandmother was Clara Maud Springthorpe who was also my grandmother, although I do not know of any Moretons anywhere in the family. So as you can imagine my curiosity was well and truly aroused. I did send her an e-mail, but her address may have changed, or other circumstances, so I am pursuing any avenue I can to try to connect the threads. I know you were in touch with a lady called Barbara Springthorpe. If either of you have any information I would be most grateful.
Kind regards,
George Manchester

Agnes Springthorpe & Daniel Munro

Hi there
I'm looking for an Agnes Springthorpe who married my g-g-uncle Daniel Munro. I know very little about either of them except Daniel was born in Rosskeen in Scotland in 1883 to Alexander Munro & Elspet (Elsie) Douglas, I'm guessing Agnes would be around the same age give or take a few years.
In the 1901 census, Daniel was unmarried & living in Inverness, working as a steam engine fitter. We think he was in the navy at some stage & he lost an arm at some time but we don't know how or when. The next we know of him is his death in 1962 in Edinburgh where he is listed as the widower of Agnes Springthorpe, he worked as a colliery pump man. His son-in-law James Murray signed the death certificate.

I know this is a long shot but I'd love to hear from anyone if you have Agnes in your tree, or maybe a James Murray from Edinburgh as a relative.
The following is a verbatim copy of a letter received from Lance John Springthorpe dated 26 Feb 1969 in response to a letter sent by Geoffrey George Springthorpe.

Dear Sir,

How different outlooks people can have. Here you are making a study of your relations whereas I, for the last 55 years have kept out of their way.

However some of the names in your letter bring back long forgotton memories.

Frederick Springthorpe was my uncle. I think he was in the shoe business. He died of cancer of the throat. He was a nice fellow. His son Eric had a heart attack when playing cricket - went to hospital and married his nurse. He was later a wool classer. He should be dead by now. Agnes - I know nothing of her later life.

Arthur Springthorpe was my uncle. He suffered from gout in later life. His daughter Bessie married a Mr Wiltshire who owns a shipping company trading with Japan. She might still be alive at about 79.

J.W. Springthorpe was, as you say, John William and my father. He was a well known Melbourne doctor. He went to the 1914 - 1918 became a Major in charge of a hospital in Egypt. He died about 1930. He has another son - Guy - who is at present a doctor in Melbourne, I don't know his address but Dr Guy Springthorpe, Melbourne would find him.

A sister Enid - married a Mr Totton and is now living in England. Guy would have her address and she knows everybody.

Also a Superintendant Springthorpe of the CIB (polic) was also a cousin of mine. He told me so. He died a couple of years ago of a heart attack. He has a daughter who is also in the Police Force.

This is about all I know. I hope it may help you.

I correct my own name - Lance John Springthorpe.

Barbara, don't know if you get anything out of that, but I have more information like that, if you would like me to send it.

Hi Barbara,

Happy to send you more info, but have too much. If you would be happy to email me at gcfox@tpg.com.au, and if I could get a postal address I will be happy to send more info onto you. Shirley Springthorpe tells me of her story that her father Willie and my great grandfather Arthur (brothers) would spend time at your Springthorpe's house in Balmain and how Arthur set fire to the curtains upstairs. Shirley's father would tell her how he could see the tall ships coming into Sydney Harbour from the top floor of the Springthorpe house.

I am convinced that they may have been cousins or second cousins, that they are related further up the line.

Have also found the reason why John Henry Springthorpe 1851 - 1898 died in Perth, WA, Australia. His family and wife wanted him as far away as possible, apparently he was a drunk. So he did, you can't get further away from Sydney.

Will get back in contact with Shirley, I'm sure she has more info. Next time I email you, I will give you that contact.

Regards, Cass

I want to test this message submittal because I am having trouble with my home email.

Look for my next response.

Thank you.

Dear Cassandra, thank you. That is excellent information and it confirms much of what I've independently discovered.

Geoffrey George S., who wrote the letter to Lance, is one of your cousins, a descendant of John S., born in 1826.

Lance John S. is one of my cousins, a descendant of John S, born in 1829 in Heanor, Derbyshire, England.

I would love to have any and all of the other information you have. I am in touch with a descendant of Enid S, a lovely young woman in England. I'm looking forward to your next post.

Thanks again.

Thanks, Cass. I am going to email my postal address to you after I finish writing this email.

That is really interesting about the two families settling in Balmain, NSW. They certainly could be related. We've just stumbled upon a huge puzzle.

John S., born in Heanor in 1829, was the first son of William S. and Sarah HUNT S. They had a second son, Robert, in 1836, and this Robert was my gg-grandfather.

Robert and his wife, Mary PEARSON S. had 7 children, the second oldest of which was named George, who was my great-grandfather. George S. married Mary Emma "Meg" SALSBURY S. and they had 4 children, the second oldest of which was John Francis "Frank" S., who left England in 1911 and sailed to New York, USA. He settled in Providence, Rhode Island, and married an Irish immigrant, Mary FLYNN S., and they had two sons, John and George. Frank died in the influenza epidemic in 1918, about 4 months before my father, George Flynn S. was born. My uncle, John, died at age 29 of tuberculosis, without issue.

I know that William S. was born around 1803, but I have not been able to find any information about him yet. Am still working on that.

I'm looking forward to solving this puzzle with you. Thanks very much.
As a follow-up to an earlier email, the family of John S. (b. 1829 in Heanor, Derbyshire, England), returned to England from Australia sometime before July, 1877. Apparently the three oldest children in the family:

Arthur S. (b. 6 March 1854);
Dr. John William S. (b. 29 August 1855); and
Frederic George S. (b. 23 June 1857)

remained in Australia and did not return to England with the rest of the family. The 1881 British Census shows that Florence Mary S. (b. 2 May 1859) was the oldest child residing with the family at the time of the Census.
