Hi Shelley

Just came across your message to me tonight. I guess I need to update my email address.

We are close relatives as my grandmother was Ada Challener, sister to your great-grandfather FSC. That means you are a generation younger than me - although I am only a 39 something.

I received FSC's journal from David Smith a descendent of Eliza (Aunt Ellie) Challener, another sister of FSC. Both these sisters lived in Reston, Manitoba.

The journal amounts to 70-100 legal sized sheets of which mine is likely a 3'rd or 4'th generation copy - so not the greatest.

Let me check it again to see if copies would be legible enough for you.

The name Bilton rang a bell but when I checked my family tree records, there were no Bilton's. You will have to help me update your side of the family.

you can also reach me via email at geri_ellis@mymts.net

Give me a few days - OK cousin.

Ellis

Hello Michael,
My name is Shelley Bilton and I came across your query regarding your name. My father, John Sproston Bilton was the son of Barbara and Gordon Bilton. Frederick Sproston Challener was Barbara's (my Grandmother) father. My father had the nickname "Spros" and told me many times that he hated his middle name (I am guessing because it was so unusual) although I never did believe him. My father was born on May 6,1934 in Toronto, Ontario.
Please feel free to contact me if you like....

Shelley

Hi Ellis,
My name is Shelley Bilton and I had posted quite a long time ago under the last name Varga in a post that read "My Great-Grandfather was Frederick Sproston Challener..." in your reply you stated that you had a copy of FS Challener's diary. How did you manage that and I do realize that there are some errors in it, but, how would I go about getting a copy? I realize this is out of the blue, but I went through a marriage break-up and several moves before I came across this.
Many thanks,
Shelley

Hi Ethel

I am not sure if you still use this site but I thought I would get in touch. It took me a long time but I finally managed to get hold of some information. I found out that my Grandfathers dad was called Robert Sproston, he died in WW1 in 1916. I think he was about 24 at the time. He died whilst my great grandmother was pregnant.

My great grandmother was born Ellen Sproston, her father was George Sproston and her Mother was Mary Dolan. I am a bit stuck with finding information on either of these as Mary remarried to a Smith later, but Ellen did have a brother, William Sproston.

I suspect that Ellen and Robert Sproston were related in some way by blood but I cannot find true evidence of this yet.

Dear David

Apologies if I appear to be somewhat vague in some of my responses but I wish to respect the Ancestry.com community guidelines about not disclosing other people's names without their consent etc. If you wish to contact me directly my email address is colin.sproston@gmail.com.

Am I correct in assuming that you are Ray and Joan's son and that you have a brother.

If your mother's maiden name was Joan Leadbetter, then we are almost certainly second cousins and the last time we met was at a funeral.

With the help of research by a lady called Audrey Beryl Curtis, whose mother was a Sproston, I can now trace my Sproston line (and yours, if the above is true) back to the early/mid 1600s.

Am I correct in assuming that your grandmother was my great aunt Nellie, who lived on the corner of Sandon Road and Fonthill Way in Stafford?

There is website "www.broughfamily.org", which suggests that we could have a link to kinsfolk of William the Conqueror, through Mary Condliffe, who married Job Sproston, our likely common great great great great grandfather. This is a Utah (Mormon?) based organisation and in my own researches I have not found Mormon IGI records to be absolutely accurate.

I am always interested in the family history and any photos - I have a photo of Ray and Joan's wedding, which I assume you have also.

William, our great great grandfather, had a total of 17 children at least two of whom did not reach adulthood.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards and a Happy New Year

Colin Sproston

Dear Colin
Are you my second cousin? We seem to share Christopher as our great-grandfather (and William as great great-grandfather).
If my assumption is correct, your father and my mother were first cousins (I recall your father regularly bringing eggs to my grandmother's house when I lived there until 1953). I also recall visiting great-grandmother Ellen's house (Ivy Cottage, Little Haywood), the last time not long before she died in 1954.
I have some information about the Haywood Sprostons (which you may already have), including a couple of photos. What I'm unsure about is where the two brothers of Christopher lived. I remember visiting Navigation Farm but I also have a recollection of my grandmother talking of (her?) Uncle Bill who lived and/or farmed elsewhere in Little Haywood.
If you do have any information I'd be very interested. (But if I have the wrong person and we are not related, please accept my apologies for bothering you.)
Kind regards
David Roberts

Hi Julianna.
Re your request. I have been tracing the Sproston family line for a family friend. I cannot connect at this stage to your tracing as you need to get hold of a couple of certificates to find out if your Thomas was part of this family.

Thomas E was born. 1917. April/June Qtr. registered in Chester. vol 8a 355.His Mother's maiden name is listed as Sproston so presume, but not totally certain that she was unmarried. Possible she married a Sproston (cousin????)

His marriage Oct/Dec Qtr. 1949 registered in Chester. vol 10a 340.

Copy of the birth certificate will give his Mum's full name and you will see if a Father is listed.
The marriage certificate will give their ages, their Father's ?? and Father's occupations, and witnesses who may be siblings.

With Mothers name, I can see if this ties in with the family line I have traced back to 1770.

You can contact me on pjem@morecambe1.eclipse.co.uk
Ethel.

Im looking for some information on Thomas Edward Sproston born in 1917 at Chester Castle, he married Ruby Doreen Pratt in 1949 also at Chester in a Civil marriage. Im trying to trace his parents if possible I believe they all come from around the Cheshire area. And I know that the Edward name is very strong in our family. Any help would be much appreciated. I am also looking for any siblings of Thomas Edward Sproston. Thanks

Richard married Ann Egerton, they had a son George who was my gr gr grandfather.

Therefore, Samuel would have been my Gr Gr Gr Gr Uncle and we both share Samuel 1770 as a descendant.

Katharine

Hi. I hate to admit it but I don't have my tree on file in any way. All I can tell you is what is in my head and that would be from Samuel born 1826 downwards to my most recent Sproston ancestor: Samuel's granddaughter Amelia (my gr gr grandmother).
Not much help, am I? Maybe Helen is more organised than I am.

Yes, a definite connection. I descend from Samuel. born around 1826, as does the other lady who replies to you. He eventually moved to Moulton sometime around 1840 and most of his descendants stayed there, except for one that we know of. I think there are still Spros(t)ons in the Shavington area, and I know that the farmhouse where Samuel and Mary lived is still standing.
I'm not totally sure off the top of my head, but I vaguely recollect that Samuel born 1770 married twice, both wives being called Mary. But as I said, it's onnly a vague recollection so I could be wrong.
