Thanks so much for the response. Your grandfather was my grandmother's brother. I remember her talking about your grandfather, and how he could talk our great grandmother Betty into anything, especially giving him money! lol. My grandmother had a picture of George, and I remember seeing it as a child, but have no idea what happened to her pictures. Leonard, the youngest, had pictures of Betty and George that he passed onto Virginia, his daughter. She has since passed, and I've been looking for her children because I know they have the pics...no success yet. I know 2 of them live in Mississippi.
So your grandfather James is buried in Webster County, or George?
I remember my grandmother Vada telling me that George farmed, and she and her siblings would slip in the barn and smoke cigarettes they had rolled. :-) My grandmother was a pistol, needless to say. I was fortunate enough to meet/know Uncle Homer, Uncle Leonard and Aunt Senia. I have pictures of Aunt Senia in my family tree. I'll be glad to send you an invitation to view, but it's a public tree so you can pull it up....Simms Family Tree. I was able to trace it back pretty far, except for the Spurgeon side. Aunt Senia's middle name was Adaline; obviously named after her grandmother.
If you will go to the library in Coffeeville, there is a bicentennial book there that has pictures of our great, great grandmother Edy Senia Brown and David Calloway Brown. Also, a picture of Betty's sister Mattie Mae Brown. If you happen to go by and see, please make copies and send me one! I would be so grateful. I just recently wrote a letter to the library, asking them if they had a scanner, and could they scan and email the pictures....doubt they do. Unfortunately, the book is out of print so there are no copies.
I also had a suspicion that Adaline's maiden name was Spurgeon. Makes me wonder....
My grandmother Vada lived in Water Valley, until about 1940. She left when my grandfather died. She moved to Missouri with my mother and aunt.
I know very little about James' family. Any stories, history, etc would be greatly appreciated. I could put the story in the family tree under his profile.
I live about an hour from Memphis, and was planning a trip to Water Valley this summer. I love going down there. It's been several years since I've been. Last time I went I found the Brown cemetary and where David Brown, our great great grandfather and his family are buried...somewhere around Bruce, I think.
So glad to connect with you!

Your cousin,
Denise Hopkins
Ripley, Tn

Just got your reply today. Thank you so much.. I have family from this city but having a hard time researching. Especially the Lapeer's. As far as I can tell they migrated from Europe to Ireland then departed to Canada. I was surprised Ireland because I thought France but my dna test showed I was part of the MacMhadoc Clan. I am stump at Anna Marie Tenant. Hopefully this will move me on. Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it..

Hi Bill, I hope you have not given up hope. I live in the village of Little Ellingham, Norfolk, England, and as luck would have, i have been researching the history of village. I came across this newspaper article that mentions the death of anna maria tenannt, who married John Spurgeon Sr in the parish church, right here in little ellingham. Ive put a link to the article below, and it is the first column on the left hand side. It even has a picture of her as well as information about her children.

http://newspapers.rawson.lib.mi.us/chronicle/ccc1914%20(E)/i...

My Grandfather was George's son James David. He died and is buried in Webster County Mississippi. I believe that George's mother was Adaline. She and George were living with a Bagwell family according to the 1870 census in Calhoun county Mississippi. Spurgeon may have been Adaline's maiden name.
I grew up and recently returned to Lafayette county Mississippi. Appears that George farmed in Yalabusha and Lafayette counties in Mississippi. Please contact me and advise any information you have re family.

She died in 1970. I am in possession of several items that would be of interest to her family -- postcards, school souvenirs with her photo from 1905 & 1907. These items were found among the belongings of a friends mother who passed away years ago. No one seems to know anything about Hallie & we have been unable to connect her with this family. Actually gave me my first bible - i still have it signed by him. They had two sons - one died young, the other Archer Spurgeon ( I think maybe Archibold...) lived in Coventry, UK...I'm sure has passed on now. I used to play with their children in the Spurgeons grand old house, Oaklands, Reading when I was young. I still have photos!

He was born in MO. If you are researching this family or descend from this family, I would like for us to share information and communicate one on one. My e-mail is wmaj58@gmail.com

I am researching this Spurgeon family, for I believe their mother was my great-great-grandmothers' sister. I just sent for a DC for whom I think may be another sister to Leonard's mother.

http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2010/aug/20/thunder-of-old-wars...
Sam Venable - columnist
-- The News Sentinel has been contacted by Mark Pallett of Great Britain, who found a GI dog tag while metal-detecting near an old airbase in Willingale, Essex.
It lists Charles Spurgeon, 4635 Newcom Ave., Knoxville, and next-of-kin as Evelyn Spurgeon.
Cynthia Tucker of the Department of War and Society at the University of Tennessee was able to track the service number on the dog tag to one Charles H. Spurgeon Jr., born approximately 1919 in K'town and married to Evelyn Hamby of Bearden. But she wasn't able to find anything else in follow-up.
Can anybody out there provide some clues?
Spurgeons in Cocke Co., TN.

I am looking for anyone desc. from or researching the Spurgeons in Cocke Co., TN, who had desc. who moved to Jackson Co., Al and perhaps Wayne Co., MO. This is the info that I have at this time:

Descendants of Margaret Spurgeon

Generation No. 1

1. MARGARET1 SPURGEON

Notes for MARGARET SPURGEON:
Susan Spurgeon, of Nashville, Tenn., states that her father, William Jr., wrote down before his death that James Taylor Spurgeon's mother's first name was Margaret and that he had two brothers, John and Thomas, who "moved to Missouri and stayed".

In an effort to find the parents or husband of Margaret, I am putting this information here because Margaret is listed with a daughter named Miranda in the 1870 Census. I don't know if there is any connection to this family.

This is the Spurgeons in Sevier Co., TN found on USGENWEN for Sevier Co., TN:

423A 22 SPURGEN DRUEY 43 MISSOURIA pg421a.txt
423A 23 SPURGEN HANNAH 43 TENNESSEE pg421a.txt
423A 24 SPURGEN MARY 21 TENNESSEE pg421a.txt
423A 25 SPURGEN WILLIAM 17 TENNESSEE pg421a.txt
423A 26 SPURGEN JOHN 15 TENNESSEE pg421a.txt
423A 27 SPURGEN CAROLINE 12 TENNESSEE pg421a.txt
423A 28 SPURGEN EMILY 7 TENNESSEE pg421a.txt
423A 29 SPURGEN JAMES 5 TENNESSEE pg421a.txt
423A 30 SPURGEN GEORGE 3 TENNESSEE pg421a.txt
423B 1 SPURGEN JOHN 54 KENTUCKY pg421a.txt
423B 2 SPURGEN AVA 48 S.

The only names I recognize are Clement Clay Spurgeon and his third wife Julie Fowler who married again after C.C. died. He was my great grandfather. He was born in Valley Head, Al. spent time in Ark. during the civil war and wound up in Higdon, Jackson, Al. His father was Jacob Spurgeon and his mother was Rachel Rainey. The census' say Jacob was born in Va. but we can't find any more about him. Spurgeon/Spurgin is such a rare name it seems strange that there would be two sets of Spurgeons in one county and them not be related.

Hi Mcasse!

Parents of Susan Spurgeon:

ELEAZOR "ALEXANDER" SPURGEON (b. Apr 1840, Salt Creek Twp, Jackson Co, IN; d. Aft. 1910, Baldhill, Okmulgee Co, OK) and MARY ANGELINE WHITE (b. 1842, Salt Creek Twp, Jackson Co, IN; d. 20 Sep 1895, Ottawa Co, KS) and married 15 Aug 1863 in Jackson Co, IN.

Note: Eleazor's aka appears to have been "Alexander". Mary's folks came from NC as did Eleazor's grandparents. Eleazor is in OK by 1900, a few years following wife's death. They are apparently in Dist. 75, Valley, Grant Co, OK in 1900. Take care to note that there are a couple Eleazors and Susans in the Spurgeon family.

ELEAZOR's parents:

SAMUEL SPURGEON (b. 1820, Salt Creek, Jackson Co, IN; d. 21 Jul 1898, Freetown (P.O.), Jackson Co, IN) and ELLEN (b. abt 1820; d. before 12 Sep 1844, Jackson Co, IN) and married 1839.

Note: Samuel was married to Elizabeth Lacy (m. 12 Sep 1844) with whom he had six children. He was married to Susan C. ? (m. 20 Jun 1877; b. 1846; d. ?) with who he had one child named Emzetta in 1879. Our Eleazor was from the first marriage with Ellen.

Samuel's parents:

JOSEPH SPURGEON (b. 10 Jan 1790, Rowan Co, NC; d. abt 1850, Salt Creek Twp, Jackson Co, IN) was married to PHEBE BRAZELTON (b. 01 Jun 1791, Rowan Co, NC; d. 07 Feb 1882, Fabius, Davis Co, IA).

Notes: They had nine children including an Eleazer Spurgeon who married a Sarah Lacy, so you see there is some room for confusion. Samuel's brother Joseph B. Spurgeon married Elizabeth Ann White. She is Mary Angeline White's sister.

Joseph's parents:

SAMUEL SPURGIN (b. Abt. 1738, Frederick Co, MD; d. Bet. Jan 1789 - 1829, Washington Co, IN) and SARAH "SALLY" LEDFORD (b. Abt. Sep 1749, Rowan Co, NC; d. 13 Feb 1839, Salem, Washington Co, IN).

Notes: They apparently had nine children. Sarah married a Frederick Spoolman on 10 Dec 1795 after the death of Samuel apparently.

Samuel's parents:

WILLIAM B. SPURGIN (b. 07 May 1704, Mile End New Town, London, Essex, England and of Maryland; d. Bet. 1748 - 04 Apr 1750, Washington Co, IN) and MARY STYLES (b. Bef. 31 Aug 1703, Westminster, London, Essex, England; d. Aft. 1784; Washington Co, IN).

Notes: They had three-four children apparently.

William's parents:

JOHN SPURGIN (b. 1678, Essex Co, England) and MARY OSTLER (b. 1678, Essex Co, England).

One researcher noted the following:

William Spurgeon wed Mary and had three children, William, Samuel and John. Forty years later after living in Va., the three brothers, their wives and their widowed mother Mary moved south to Rowan Co., NC about 1759.

Antietam Bottom was the name of a 300 acre tract just upriver from the Antietam Creek where it enters the Potomac River. James and William Spurgin, the immigrants, owned parcels in this area. Here is a deed: Frederick Co. MD land Records, Vol F, p. 504-505. William Spirgon (later Col) farmer of Frederick Co. Md to Thomas Swearingen, gentleman of Frederick Co, 19 May 1758 in consideration of sixty pounds, Spirgon's Lott, being part of a tract called Antietam bottom, being on the Potomac, and beginning at the southwest corner of a tract of land called Shepherd's Purchase and containing fifty acres. Witnesses, Jos. Smith and Moses Chapline, Jenet Spirgon (Mary Jane Sellers) wife of said William released her right of dower; and Mary Spirgon, mother of said William , having a lawful right to the said land, gave her consent as well. An alienation fine of two shillings was paid by Thomas Swearingen.

My Note: This particular Swearingen is my first cousin several times removed. What a coincidence that another part of my family are across the river. These two families were never related until they hit KS!

Also check out Abbot's Creek Primitive Baptist Church, Rowan Co, NC and the Muddy Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Sullivan Co, TN. The Spurgeons are aplenty there.

Snippets of the "Spurgeon Quarterly" is available online to gather additional information on the wider family.

Sincerely,
Robert

P.S. Send email to contact you directly.
Robert, Thank you much for the info. I am still new at this, so am doing a lot of fishing, and sometimes not in the right stream. I have a little info from Susan forward in my family tree that might be of use to you, and maybe not. It is an open tree, you can access it....Casselman family tree. I may have come in contact with your relatives in the late forties or early fifties. My grand parents ( Vernie Casselman & his wife Mildred Myers ) lived in Tahlequah Ok. during that time and I faintly remember my parents taking my sisters and I to visit and we went to the home of relatives frequently while there + plus I spent a summmer there. As with you, feel free to contact me any time.....thanks again......mike
