Hi, rather a late reply but there you go.

I may be a direct descendant of Thomas and Sarah. My father did a lot or research the "old" way some years ago and I believe Thomas and Elizabeth had 3 children:Sarah Born 15 Oct 1785, John Born 21 February 1792 and Thomas baptised 17 Sept 1796. In the same church as Thomas and Elizabeth. It is this Thomas that is my latest definite relative on the Squire line. The difficulty comes as he gave two completely different places of birth on different censuses. One gives Frieston and the other Preston in Lancs. My (late) father was unaware of this other census and focussed all his efforts on tracking down The father of Thomas Squire born in 1796 in Freiston. Without result. I'm not even sure which Frieston it is as there is a parish and an actual village. He even engaged local researchers who went through records by hand to no avail.
I'm not sure why he believed the Thomas and Elizabeth to be "my" Thomas father, I haven't found any references.
I do have a little extra information on Elizabeth's parents if that is of interest.

I hope this was of help.
Phil Squire

This is what I have on John and his immediate family. Please advise on corrections:

Sir JOHN COLLINGS SQUIRE—poet, born April 2, 1884, in Plymouth, Devon, son of Jonas Squire and Elizabeth Rowe Collings. John died in December 1948 in Rushlake Green, Sussex, and was buried in Broadwoodwidger Parish, Devon. He married (1) EILEEN HARRIET ANSTRUTHER WILKINSON on November 28, 1908. She was born June 25, 1884, in Middlesborough, Yorkshire. Sir John (my grandfather’s second cousin) was knighted in 1933. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, “The English writer J.C. Squire was a leading poet of the Georgian school, a group of early twentieth century British writers who drew inspiration primarily from the countryside and nature. He was also an influential critic and editor. He was educated at Blundell’s School and at St. John’s College, Cambridge…His original poetry is intellectual but simple, sometimes metaphysical and always interesting technically in its fluent and variable rhythms. A collection of his best verse up to 1919 was published under the title Poems: First Series. He was for a long period the literary editor of The New Statesman. From 1919 to 1934 he edited The London Mercury, becoming the unofficial leader of the Georgian movement of poetry. In the latter phase of the Georgian movement, its members were sometimes known as the Squirearchy.” As a reader for the publisher Macmillan, he was responsible for recommending the publication of Thornton Wilder’s The Bridge of San Luis Rey and Stella Gibbons’ Cold Comfort Farm. He also brought James Elroy Flecker’s Hassan to the London stage. He edited a number of anthologies, of which his best known were his Selections from Modern Poets (1921 and 1924). He was also an acclaimed parodist [inventor of the double parody]. His Collected Poems, edited by Sir John Betjeman, appeared in 1959.” (Source: on-line search) Sir John had one child.

1. RAGLAN SQUIRE—a famous architect in London; born January 30, 1912; died May 18, 2004; married (1) RACHEL ATKEY; two children. He regularly visited his father’s grave in Broadwoodwidger (according to a cousin’s contact at St. Nicholas Church).

Did John or Raglan have second marriages?

I have two sisters for John:

ANNIE SQUIRE—born in 1887 in Plymouth; died after 1901.
DOROTHY SQUIRE—born in 1888 in Plymouth.

Are you the great-grandson of John or of Raglan?
Thank you for your help.
Joan carlsonjm@hotmail.com
Michigan

Hello Carol Anne,

Would you know whether Chris has a relative who is living abroad (Canada?) and do you know who he is?
Would you know of any others (Siblings) of chris's and what was Aunty Agnes's surname before she married Uncle Chris?
Did Chris have a sister called Margaret Dunlop Squire, everyone use to call her Aunt Pearl, would this be right?
I think that Margaret had a daughter called Margaret Squire Brown and she married a Stewart Brymer who I think was a farmer in his day. I think they had 3 sons, Stewart,Norman and Graham. They should be in their 50's be now. Its a long while since I saw them in Dundee, in the 70's?,Sadly Margaret Brymer past away about 1990 and her husband Stewart past away in 2005. All a great bunch of people to talk too but sadly no more, time is moving on.
Its just come to me now that Chris & Agnes did live at 4, Mitchell street, Dundee in 1997. In 2000 when he past away he was 91 yrs young.
Any information about the rest of Chris's siblings would be wonderful.
Well I leave it there for now, I hope I'm not borring you too much but I find all this very interesting, so I can record it and pass it on to our grand children.

Bye for now, Keith.

Hello Carolanne,

Thankyou indeed for allowing me to talk about your Grandad Chris & your Grandmother Agnes, they were very nice people and certainly felt at home in their company. Aunt Agnes, as we called her was very frail but very strong minded, sadly I couldn't make it too Chris's funeral but I do know that Margaret & Donald (Don) my ex. wife and brother inlaw were there to represent John Webster Squire's family, chris's younger brother. They commented that it was a big send off for Uncle Chris and they did meet with many others of Chris's family but sadly again its all wilted away. I would like to recall all those people onto the Squire family tree so that our grand children won't forget their ancestries from Scotland.
May I ask, if its not too rude of me, your surname now ( Sigdel ) doesn't sound that much Scottish? India / Napal ??
Its along way off your normal McDonald's, Squire's and Baxter surnames. My scottish Roots are from further North:- Aberdeen, my mother was a Baxter and very firery too, she had alot of brothers but only one sister, my mother and her sister Nett' worked on the fishing docks in Aberdeen, filleting fish all day, very hard worker and did so all her life, she was never out of work.
If possible, may we link up direct through our e.mail Address's so that we may be more private with our Ancestry details, here is my e.mail address.

keithnoddings@aol.com

Its better for sending family photographs and such like and building the Squire family tree.

also may I ask, who are Steven, Lena and Lewis Sqiure, are they your family members ( F/Book )

Hope to here from you soon,

Regards Keith.

Hello Carolanne,

Well, Its absolutely great to connect with my former wife's family again, truely brilliant.
Chris and myself when we met for the first time and that would be away back in the early 70's, at my wedding day in Burnley, Lancashire. Chris and Agnes were there, un-usual for Agnes because she rarely travelled in them days and it was such an honer for them to be there, Chris as I say was very interested in Dundee ? can't remember whether it was United or Ranger but that was our little connection because I use to play for Burnley FC in my time and it was lovely to talk to Chris about his involvement with Dundee Soccer Boys. At that time in the 70's he was well known amongest the footballing world and everyone knew he worked on the toll bridge, through the day time?

I would dearl love to find out about the of the rest of his family members and build up my family tree on them. Would you be able to help me ?

Kind regards Keith.

Hello Carolanne Sigdel,

Thankyou ever so much for replying to my message left here on this site, its been some time now since I received a message from anyone related to Christopher Squire from Dundee, Scotland.
I perfectly understand that there must of been many more Christopher Squire's who lived in the Dundee area but Mitchell Street in Lochee Dundee is not familier with me seen as I come from South of the boarder in England.
Christopher, known as Uncle Chris to me, I was once married to his niece Margaret May Squire who was born in Dundee but spent most of living in Lancashire, England. Her father John Webster Squire, he was Chris's younger brother born 1919 in Dundee, John Webster never knew his father because he past away before John was born in 1919.
Do you think that we are talking about the same family of Squire's from Dundee. Chris's wife in the 80's was called Agnes. Would this help in any way to connect us? This would be wonderful if this were to be true.
Looking forwards to your next message,

Regards Keith.

Squire family from Hatherleigh, Devon

Hello,

My great great great grandfather Jonas Squire(1800-1878) came from Hatherleigh - the story goes that he was very religious and joined the Bible Christians and was asked to leave - taking up a farm in nearby Northlew.

I would be interested to find out whether he had any family from there and wether any connections can be made?

Thank you.

Dear Donald,
I had wondered if my set of Squire's had connections wiht the Squire's on the coast. I found a Roger whom I believe might have been a brother to my oldest Squire, Sebatian who died in 1764, as Sebastian named his oldest son, Roger. Those two names seem to have been passed and repassed for several generations. There are no Squire's living in Northampton Co today but some just over the Va/NC line in Emporia, Va. Sounds like you have been looking at the Squire tree for some time if you have been doing it for 25 years. I would be most interested in learning how your Squire's and mine are related. Any help would be most appreciated.

Yes, I have Family Tree Maker. Please do send your file! Do you have information on William Cooper? Did he have two wives? The file I received from the National Archives for his Civil War record showed two different wives ...... When I contacted a descendent from the first wife (she was actually a spouse of a descendent) she said she had found the same information about two wives. But when she mentioned two wives to the descendents of the first wife they denied that there ever was a second wife for William. We are descendents of what would be considered the second wife..married to our William who fought at Gettysburg and was injured as I previously mentioned. There were so many William Coopers in the Civil War it is hard to track.

Hello David, thankyou very much for replying to my message posted some while ago, I'm very sorry for the delay but very glad that you have answered.
The Squire family that I'm looking for were Thomas and Mary Squire from Dundee around the 1900, in the Ogilivies Road area. John Webster Squire was born (b)1919 but never knew his father because Thomas died before John Webster was born. His father was a seaman although we never knew whether he died naturally or at sea? John Webster had many siblings but the only one that we felt close to was his older brother Chris (Christopher), now Chris for many a year was connected with and worked on the toll bridge in Dundee, a well known character who had links with Dundee United football club, well known amongst must of the young players around that time (70's & 80's).
Would dearly love to connect with some others of John's family whether it be nieces or nephews of the younger generation.

Regards Keith.

Yes, I will work on that. After I sent that post last night, I looked it up again. And I was wrong--There were two Ira Bakers! Daughter of the younger Ira Baker(and Elizabeth Darling? from memory, but I think correct)was Sarah Ann Baker. That would have made Benager Baker her grandfather's brother/great uncle. She married Henry Prater Welsh and they are my ancestors through their daughter Mary Elizabeth. I will try to contact you right on your tree, where it says "contact owner". L

We have Rhoda Squire listed as an ancestor as well. A Great Great aunt used that Rhoda Squire connection to be admitted to the DAR, in fact.

Wish I had more documents with me. will be scanning them in June. Just read through them last month and took some mental notes. So you had a lot of male Bakers in a row? that is cool to do the DNA.
