Iam looking for information on the Folkard family in the Leiston area. I know that John Staff brother of Agnes and Elizabeth brought my fathers sister up when their parents died. This would have been around 1920. I know some of the Staff family have researched their family history and would like to contact anyone who knows of this event to help me find other relatives.

Hi, your enquiry is now 5 years old so I hope this gets to you. I have traced my family back to the Bunwell area of Norfolk and have a direct line back to the 1600's. If you contact me I can give you any details that you might require. My family was mainly resident in Wacton and moved to Suffolk in the 1800's. Regards David

I have finished the Staff family with those records that I can find and I do not believe that there is a relatinship. The Staff name is a Swedish military name and was taken by my gggrandfather and later by my ggrandfather. Both men lived quite far south in Sweden. My GGrandfather settled in southern Minnesota.

If you have any further questions please contact me again.

Audrey Reddy

My father was a Swedish Finlander, Carl Vilhelm Staf (Staav), from Malax, Finland. He came to Canada apparently under another name, Staflund, ostensibly to avoid being sent to the Russian front like many other young men from Finland. He came to Canada when he was 18 years old, around 1923. He had cousins who settled near San Francisco and his own father spent time in California before his early death when my father was about six years old.

Dad's brother August (Gus) came to Canada about two years later and used the spelling of Staff for his surname. We always thought this was because Immigration staff often made decisions about settlers' names to suit their convenience.

My sister Bernece who died a few months ago knew more about the family history.

I am still continuing to complete my family tree and in the course of it i have come across the James Staff you are looking for.
James's father was indeed George STAFF and his mother was Ellen WHITING (b 1833, Brockdish, Norfolk) who worked as a Laundress.
James and Ellen had two children George (b 1889 Caton, Lancs) and Dorothy Ellen (b1895 Caton, Lancs.
George STAFF's father (James grandad) was William STAFF (b 1799, Needham, Norfolk) and he was married to Phoebe BURGELL who is James grandma. William STAFF is my Great Great Great uncle. Hope this helps. If you want to know anymore let me know and i will try and help.
Regards
James

Hello,

I myself am a STAFF (James Staff) and have been researching my family tree for the past 18 months and have gone back to late 1600's. In the course of my work i have encountered a small family of Staffs related to me who moved to Farnworth in Lancashire and spawned the Staffs that went on to live in that area. It is quite possible that the Staffs you have mentioned (James & Dorothy) fit in somewhere. I am looking into this at the moment and hopefully i can update you a bit more soon.
The George STAFF you mentioned who is the father of James seems to originate from Weybread, Suffolk which is again where a lot of my ancestors came from.

Regards

James Staff

Miss Agnes Staff was born in January of 1891. Her parents were Joseph & Anna Staff. . . .

AGNES STAFF married FRANK JENTRY in Texas. I don't have their marriage-date, but it had to be after 1920. They both resided in Victoria County, Texas. . . .

Agnes Staff and her husband Frank Jentry had 3 children by 1930. They resided in Victoria County, Texas. One of their children was FRANKIE LEE JENTRY born in June of 1929. . . . .

ANGES (STAFF) JENTRY was born in January of 1891, and she died in 1987 in Victoria, Texas. Her husband FRANK JENTRY was born August of 1886 in Texas, and he died in January of 1968. He died in Inez, Texas. . . . .

Does anyone know if the Staff and Jentry families of Victoria County, Texas knew the Gayle brothers who resided in Inez, Texas? . . . .

There were 2 brothers, Sylvester Gayle who died in 1978, and George Gayle Jr. who was married to Minnie Washington. Minnie died young in 1928. . . . .

I am trying to find out what became of George Gayle's family. Did they move from Inez? Where to?
I'm replying to an old posting - so I hope this reaches you.
My Great Great Granny was born Sarah Staff - circa 1848.
She gave her place of birth as Hapton, Norfolk - which is quite close to Bunwell.
Both are close to Wreningham, which is where Sarah's husband (Walter Copeman) was from. Does your Staff family have a Sarah born around about that time?

Looking for information on John Staff, born abt.1853 in Norfolk, England. He married my great great grandmother Harriet Mary Ann Harmer, born 1857 in Stalham, Norfolk, England. She was the widow of Richard Hazel, born 1859 in Barton Turf. Richard died in 1881 so marriage took place between 1881 and 1888 when the immigrated to the US. That's about all the info I have on him, and it may be an impossibility. He's not a direct ancestor, but his marrying my 3rd great grandmother and bringing her to the US enabled me to exist. Had she not brought her daughter, Constance Mary to the US, she would not have met and married into the Holmes family. So, I would like to learn about him.

Hi, I do not know your family, but I have a suggestion. My Swedish family has a last name of Haff, but it was misspelled once in sweden as Staf when they were immigrating. It also was spelled Hoff in the immigration process out of Copenhagen and in USA. So if I were you, I would check under other spellings like those and other forms of Staf (which you probably have). I would have never thought my family would be misspelled Staf. I try to check for all kinds of spelling when I am looking. Good Luck . Donna

Your message was quite old by the time I discovered it so I hope this reaches you. My Great Great Grandmother was born Sarah Staff, and according to the censuses she was born around 1848 in Hapton, Norfolk. She married Walter Copeman in 1866. They had eleven children in the Henstead area of Norfolk. Sarah died in 1890 around the time of the birth of her youngest child. Unfortunately this is all I have been able to discover about her so far. In your research into the Staff family in Norfolk have you come across her? Susan

Staff from the Republic of Panama

Hello...My name is Nicole Quintana and I'm a 21-yr old, Hospitality major. My mother's maiden surname is Staff and her father, my grandfather, turned 100 years old last Sun., Sept. 21st. He was born here, in the Republic of Panama, but on Sunday, he told my cousin about his father Otto who came from Germany with his sister on this ship and whatnot. My cousin doesn't quite remember the whole story and I haven't had a chance to ask my grandfather. But I would like to know, where does this last name come from? Another thing: One of my mother's sisters was registered as Magdalena Stapf [with a P before the F]. It was a type-O, but she never changed it despite the fact that my grandfather and his children were registered Staff [double F]. Does the Stapf exist too? Thanking you in advance, I remain.

Meaning of Staf

The original post said that this name (Staf/Staff/Stav) has a military meaning. Also, in our family history it states that "Anders Staf, born 9-26-1817, was first a soldier and that's why he got the name Staf."

What does this name mean? Does anyone know?

Unable to find in a Swedish-English dictionary...

Please e-mail at madl1@juno.com
My last name is Staaf, but I see by Minnesota Census, It was spelled Staff in the State, eventho, my family have always spelled it Staaf. My ggrand was Rev. Gustav Staaf, who was married to Augsta C. Staaf and the only children I know of by names are Jenny who was a missionary, Oscar who was my grandfather, and Charles who was living in Texas years ago. I know Uncle Charlie was a germ fanatic and usually wore white gloves. Does any of this sound familar? I sure hope so. I know Gustav was born in Sweden, but I don't know where. I do have his birthyear and death year and Agusta's too.

Wm. Richardson STAFF, England

Wm. Richardson Staff born about 1848 in Middlesex (London) England. He married my Isabella ANDERSON of Romford, Essex, England I believe about 1860. Children born in the London area were Emma K abt 1864, William J. 1866, Kate, 1870, Edward Mark 1875, Ernest Wm. 1877, Robert W. 1880, . BUT...there are two more girls, May Ann Anderson Staff bc 1860, and Eliza Anderson Staff bc 1864. The two last girls carry the Anderson as a middle name, so I do believe they are daughters of Isabella Anderson who married Wm. Richardson Staff. In 1881 Census, the Sr. W.R.Staff was a Hat Box Maker, and it is believed he died in 1895 in London area. What happened to this family and their descendants? I have much Anderson information to share with them.
thanks
Betty

The earliest member of my family is James Staff who originated from Westleton Suffolk. We know they had 5 children but at present there is only one John Staff who moved area to county Durham. John was married and his children baptised at Hinton cum Blythburgh. Johns son David Staff moved to County Durham, when is unknown as we have some of his children being born in County Durham, but his marriage we have been unable to trace, unless he married on the way to County Durham from Suffolk.

I have census records that show Samuel and his wife Mary were from England I have also found information that one of their sons Albert William was with the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
Swedish Staff Family

My great-grandfather, Anders Peter Staff came from Kronoberg, Sweden in the late 1880's and settled in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. His last name, Staff/Stav/Staf, was a military name. It is possible that there were other members of the family that took this name. If you know where your family is from in Sweden, I will hopefully be able to check for a relationship.

Audrey

Staff

In answer to the Staff interest.
1. You can e-mail me directly at audrey_reddy@yahoo.com
2. Staff, in our family, is a military name. Sweden did not and currently does not have a formal military system as we have. Their form is a 'peasant' military more like our 'week-end' soldiers. When the Swedish men joined they often took another name, in this case, Staf/Stav/Staff. The meaning of this name is stout stick. Upon becoming members of this loosely knit society they were entitled to foods from the local people or possibly the use of a farm. The book 'Cradled In Sweden' by Carl-Erik Johansson is an excellent resource for people starting off in Swedish research. It is available from the Everton Publisher, Inc., P.O. Box 368, Logan, Ut 84323-0368. It also discusses this military concept.

3. My Great Grandfather was born in the early 1800's in Kronoberg, Sweden. This is in the middle-southern portion of Sweden near the larger town of Ljungby. He died in Cannon Falls, Minn., in the early 1900's. He was married in Sweden to my great-grandmother and after her death, married a second time in Cannon Falls.

By now you realize that having the name Staff does not a relative make. That is why the location of this particular name is very important.

Hope this is helpful. You are always welcome to contact me. Will be gone from computers for about 2 months.

Audrey Reddy

Catherine Staff of Germany-New York County 1850

When you go on www.ancestry.com/ initial page, click on census records, then put in Staff for the Surname and N.Y. for the state-
in the second section of Staff you will find a 1850 Staff,Catherine New York County N.Y. page 039 NewYorkCity Ward 7 Federal Population Census NY 1850 Federal Census Index. Also, have you tried putting her name in on www.familysearch.org/ (and also your Bonner person?)when the first page is totally finished coming up? She is not on the 1915 Albany, NewYork Census
when the names were all spelled Stapf again-
I would also try www.genforum.com/ and put in Stapf and Staff on the surname message board and see if anyone put info on there about her- then I would try her in everything as Catherine Bonner, her married name- that is usually when you find women - when they are married, that is.
My grandfather was Herman Stapf(1884-1948) born in New York City- but in the 1800's either the name was changed by the census person, or the family had their name changed thru Ellis Island, or I'm not sure how- but there are many Staff New York Census, 1790-1890, and then on the 1915 Census Albany, New York, they are all Stapf again-my great grand mother was Caroline Leppert Stapf and my greatgrandfather Casper Stapf-but Casper's cemetery deed is also spelled C.
STAPF/STAFF from BADEN GERMANY

We should all be writing where our Stapf/Staff came from-
my Casper(or Caspar)Stapf is my greatgrandfather born in Germany. He married Caroline Leppert born in Germany. He had Herman C(abt 1880 to 1948), Olga and Frances Stapf-Herman C Stapf is my grandfather, and lived in New York City, and Brooklyn New York (Kings County). There is a Casper Stapf on www.familysearch.org born 1772 from Baden Germany-
he had 17 children, and many came to America at different times-I am trying to find when my Casper Stapf came to America-he is on the 1860 New York Census as Casper Staff-but then his wife, I think, is on the Albany 1915 Census as Caroline Stapf-for some reason all the New York Stapf in the 1800's were spelled Staff on the Census. Also, my mother Mildred Stapf, born 1914, had a brother named Herman Clarence Stapf, and a
half brother Warren Heineke-my mother received a Stapf coat of arms from a John Stapf, contractor, Harrisburg Pa many years ago-it has 3 knights in armor-just really the heads with animals on each head and a shield in front with those animals on, and
it says-Stapf Barons of Austria and Bulgaria, since 1458-
if these names look familiar at all, please contact me directly at forjets@aol.com(KPerry)

My grandfather was a Francis William Staff, who we understand had some connection with a farm at Borstall, Kent. He was a regular soldier, becoming Captain or Major, and served in the Army Service Corps (as it was then called, ie pre-First World War) in amongst other places, the Sudan.

My father was in the Royal Army Service Corps, and also became a Captain after the Second World War. He had several brothers and sisters, one also called Frank who we think went to live in NE England. My father's name was Arthur.

Amny information linking us to other Staffs would be welcomed.
