Hi I am a direct descendent of Sylvester Stove A.K.A. Stafford
I know that he was born Ipswich, Suffolk, England 1625/8 we have never been able to locate his parents names. would be thankful for any help in figuring out how he was related to the Stafford s of England. His story as the family knows it was that he was a small child when the ship he was on sank of the coast of Maine, USA he was taken in by a Captain John Stover. paperwork with him suggested he was a Stafford. We believe he was returned to his family in England but no proof of any of the story can be found. We know that he returned to Maine as Sylvester Stover in 1649 aboard the Banks Mss.

I can say in speaking with my father this morning he printed off a copy of his grandfathers death certificate (William Edgar Stafford) and it lists Joab Stafford as his father??

If I am correct, Warren E Stafford was the six-year elder brother of William E Stafford. Born about 1855, Warren is included as a child of Joab and Chloe Stafford in the 1860 census (see below).

I think that the key to solving this is the 1850 and 1860 census for Joab and Chloe Stafford who are residing in Dryden, Lapeer Co, MI. We can then fill in some of the blanks with other records.

Since he was born in 1861, your William E Stafford could not be included in the 1860 census. We would expect him to be in the 1870 census but for the fact that none of the family can be found anywhere in the census for that year. Perhaps Joab's occupation as a mason took him to a different location and he and his family were missed entirely.

I am thinking that Joab must have died around 1873 when land is transferred from his name to his wife's name (no Michigan death record though). In 1879, Chloe Ann Stafford distributes land to Charles S Stafford (a son), William E Stafford (the supposed son), and George W Cowles (a son-in-law). I think that this is a convincing circumstance for William E Stafford being Charles' brother and Chloe's son.

The Job and Chloe Stafford that you have listed from New York and Vermont are from a different line—from the same immigrant ancestor but through a completely different descent. I don't know how you came by this but I don't think that you'll be able to link to them.

A Pennsylvania birth for Joab makes sense. Joab Stafford was likely born in McKean, Erie Co, Pennsylvania. His parents, Warren and Mary [Irish] Stafford can be found there in the 1820 census with a single male child under 10; that would be two-year-old Joab. He was their eldest.

A few years ago, I corresponded with a descendant of Henry Stafford. Henry was the eldest son of Joab and Chloe Stafford. I posted some information over at GenForum which should help you to start making some connections. If you need more, I'll be only too happy to supply.

It sounds correct although I am not sure who Warren E Stafford is?? As the children of William Edgar Stafford were my father's father and uncles and aunts I am not sure who Warren is.

I really appreciate this information. If Chloe A Stafford deeded land to William E Stafford this is a good indication that he was Joab and Chloe's son. I am hoping to find more definite proof of this.

It sounds like William Edgar Stafford might be the son of Joab Stafford and Chloe Ann Fox. They are in the 1850 and 1860 census for Dryden, Lapeer Co, Michigan. I cannot find this family in any subsequent census but note that Chloe sells some land to her children after 1873, including one Will E Stafford. Does that sound like they could be the ones you are looking for?

I know this is the problem I am having not knowing the exact date they changed there name.

I am not sure that that Caroline Green and George Stafford are the right ones. As on my grandfathers birth certificate in 1900 George has put him self as George Smith, my grandfather was born Alfred Smith as his naval records for the 1st world war (yes he joined even though he was only 14) show Alfred Smith and then were changed at a later date to Stafford.

The reason they are not present in the 1901 census is because they were Smith's not Staffords. I have been searching for them for months and with little success.

Where did you find that married record for Caroline and George?

My Great Uncle Dennis Stafford brother to my Grandfather Alfred Stafford. All born as Smith changed name somewhere around 1900 from Smith to Stafford. Dennis was born in 1898 and married a Mary Charles my nan's sister.

Can find no trace of any of the brothers.
Their father was George Smith
Mother Caroline Green.
Dates are few and far between I am affraid.

I have been in touch with the Stafford Society and their have sent me the info they have on my Isaac Stafford. Here is what I have on Araminta Stafford. None of it has been proven. This has been a hard family to research. Hope this will help you

I'm trying to find any info on Isaac Stafford m. Clarisa Ann Cooke parent's. Isaac b.1817 New York. Move to Illinois abt 1850, killed 1864 Miss. Children: Jane b 1838 NY, Caroline Amelia b 1845 NY, Orville b.1847 NY, Mariette b 14 Feb 1850 Earlville, Ill, Elsie b 6 Jun 1852 Earlville Ill, My grandmother, Araminta 31 Mar 1855 Earlville Ill, Any info on Isaac or any of the older children would be of help.

Be very careful. There is a lot of misinformation out there. For example, George Horton Stafford, my father, was born August 24, 1919. His wife, my mother, was born March 12, 1917. Also, there is no proof (at least up to this point)of Emma Hope having any Blackfoot Indian in her. That was just a rumor in my family. It could be true, but as of now, there has been no evidence to support it. I am in the process of checking out the information I have. Staffords of Janesville WI and Chicago IL

I have been working on a project trying to identify 12 men who signed the back of my father-in-law's boot camp photo from the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in 1942. One of the men signed his name as Robert James Stafford of Janesville, Wisconsin.

I was able to find both 1920 and 1930 US Census listings for a family with a son by that name in Chicago in the household of Edward and Alma (Kapke) Stafford. I also found a Chicago birth certificate for a Robert James Stafford b Jan 24, 1916. Robert's mother evidently was from Janesville, WI.

If anyone here is related to that family--or if anyone has access to Janesville WI or Chicago IL obituaries--could you please contact me and let me know if your Robert James Stafford served in the Navy during WWII?

Thanks so much for any help with this. I do want to memorialize these men who served. So far, I'm finding precious little online to recognize them for their service.

He died in 1991 at the age of 74 in Searcy Co., Arkansas.1 His wife, Emma Hope Gregory was part Black Foot native american. They married 27 Feb 1939 in Rawlings, WY.

Second Generation

2. George William STAFFORD was born about 1884 in Kansas. He appeared in the census in 1910 in Cheyenne, Laramie Co., Wyoming.
1910. Listed as George Stafford, a railroad fireman. Father born in Wisconsin and mother born in Canada. He appeared in the census in 1920 in Cheyenne, Laramie Co., Wyoming.
1920. Listed as George W. Stafford, a foreman, with wife Ida M. and son George H. Father born in England and mother born in Canada. George appeared in the census in 1930 in Delta Co., Colorado.
1930. Possible match. Listed as George W. Stafford age 57 b. KS, a farmer, with sons G. Harold age 14 and Bert J. age 10. Father born in England and mother born in Missouri. Ida Mae HORTON and George William STAFFORD were married.

3. Ida Mae HORTON was born in Jun 1893 in Iowa.

Third Generation

4. Jacob D. STAFFORD was born about 1850 in Wisconsin. He appeared in the census in 1880 in Courtland Twp., Republic Co., Kansas.
1880, Listed as a farmer with wife and 2 daughters. Parents born in NY. Clarica A. "Clara" and Jacob D. STAFFORD were married.

5. Clarica A. "Clara" was born about 1858 in Canada.

6. George HORTON was born in Jan 1863 in Iowa. He appeared in the census in 1900 in Tipton Twp., Harden Co., Iowa. Listed as a farmer with wife Mary C. and children Mary L., Lydia A. and Ida M. Mary C(atherine) GOGERTY and George HORTON were married about 1886.

7. Mary C(atherine) GOGERTY was born in Jan 1865.

Fourth Generation

8. Nathan J. STAFFORD (Branch 185) was born about 1813 in Vermont.
Another source has him born in NY. He appeared in the census in 1860 in Richland, Rice Co., Minnesota.
1860. Listed as Nathl. Stafford, a farmer, with wife Leuizer and children Geo. - age 19, Elizth - age 17, Mary A. - age 13, Jacob - age 11, Edwd - age 8 and Lilly - age 6. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Richland, Rice Co., Minnesota.
1870. Misindexed, cannot find page. Nathan appeared in the census in 1880 in Courtland Twp., Republic Co., Kansas.
1880. Listed as Nathan Stafford, a farmer, with wife Louisa, sons Amos E., Elmer M., & Nathan W., daughter Minnie L., granddaughter Jessie M. Hamilton and grandson George S. Hamilton. Father born in VT and Mother born in NY. Louisa M. ROBERSON and Nathan J. STAFFORD (Branch 185) appeared in the census on 21 Sep 1857 in Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., Minnesota. Territorial Census. My father is George Horton Stafford. He was born August 24, 1919 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He died Sept. 6, 1991 in Little Rock, Arkansas as per his death certificate.
Emma Hope Gregory, his wife, was born March 12, 1917 in Altona, Utah. She died in Arkansas (I need to look up the date.) Please reply to mary_tumbleson@yahoo.com, as the above address is my husband's.

I have been in contact this past week with a third male descendant of John Stafford who had DNA testing. His results match ours and is also showing a patrilineal descent from COMPTON, not Stafford.
