Hello Karen,
Thank you so much for getting back to me I had not checked the message boards for a few days but did so today when i had 5 minutes and there you were. Now i've calmed down a bit and stopped jumping round like a kid i thought i coud reply to you.I am John Stain's great, great grand daughter if my information is correct.
Yes ,my Eliza's (b:1886) parents are John Stain (b:1854) and Emma Ball (b:1856).She has two older brothers,William H (b:1877) and John T Stain(b:1879) and two younger sister's Louisa (b:1888) and Amy E Stain (b:1891).All the children except Eliza were born in west bromwich,England.I still can't work out why they travelled to the USA either and until you replied i didn't know that they had gone to Illinois.Has for the immigration records I had a little help with that and they arrived in the USA,the port of New York on the 21st september 1881 on the RMS Batavia and the sailed from Liverpool & Queenstown,England,on the passenger list John ,Emma,William and John T Stain are listed.I too searched for the surname Stain but it was missed read and listed under the surname "Stam"!!! If you have problems finding it i'll scan my copy in and email it too you.I know they came back to england becuse they are the 1891 census for west bromwich so i am really confused what went on but i am determined now you have contacted me if everything tallies up to get to the bottom of it.I have a few other bits and pieces on the Stain family I can supply once i can get them all put together has i am relatively new to this as of a couple of months. Also has timed passed the name changed to Staines as that was was my mother's maiden name again not sure why but i'm gonna find out one way or another.Where abouts are you situated if you don't mind me asking?? I'm about 3 to 4 miles away from were our ancestors lived which is pretty cool.Hope to hear from you really soon. Many thanks for getting in touch karen, look forward to future correspondance.
Tracey

Hello Tracey
you have managed to track me down at last thanks to Pat!

'My Eliza Stain' was born in Illinois in 1886. Her parents were Emma Ball and John Stain. Both her older and younger siblings were born in West Bromwich, England which intrigued me greatly. Why did the family move to Illinois and then back again a few years later?
So far I have been unable to unlock the reason. The National Archives advised that the passenger records between 1776-1889 have largely not survived and there is no record of their voyage either way that I know of. I contacted the Illinois records office but they said they did not have central records from then. Local records may exist but I would need to know where in Illinois she was born.
So I have (for now) accepted that I won't get to the bottom of this any time soon.
Is this the person you are looking for and do you know anything more?

regards Karen

There are several sources for birthplace: US Census records, Social Security application, death certificate -- sometimes a marriage announcement or an obitutary, just to name a few.

If you post her name, her parents and other pertinent info, perhaps someone can find this for you. (Note: You aren't supposed to post info re: living people, though.)

Tracey,

Ok, maybe I wasn`t wrong, after all! I`m now looking at the info. on Ancestry for Eliza A. Stain b. 1886 Illinois who is listed as part of the Burkitt family Tree. When I click on "make connection" I get a message form to send a message to mmurphy3186 who is also the user who posted the message on the Pinegrove Historical Society (PGHS) board. Try replying to that message asking her if she is the owner of the Burkitt tree with Eliza Stain. I`m pretty sure it`s the same person.

Pat
