Got to love an inquisitive child, I myself started family history at age 13 doing the same thing...bugging my mother!!

I don't know about a statue of the rev Robert Stainton, but I have seen a memorial to him in one of the Sheffield Churches. He was quite a character. His son Robert Kirk Stainton emigrated to Australia (followed his aunt) and became a school teacher. R K Stainton is my great great grandfather.

Looking forward to hearing from you again, I have lots of pictures, newspaper articles etc that you might be interested in :)

Goodness - my 11 year old son wanted to check out the surname last night and saw your post so I responded. Marjorie is my mother and I was brought up in Hawick - I usd to listen to many a tale of the family past so it all seems so familiar - I now live in England. I believe Robers Stainton has a statue to him in Sheffield ? You probably know more than me now.

Hello,
Yes we are most certaintly related through our Stainton's. I have done a heap more research since 2003 when I posted and have much to share. Please e-mail me on flicks_chick@hotmail.com if you are interested in exchanging info.

I was briefly in touch with Marjory Hughes in Hawick, is this your mother? I have been helped a great deal by a historian in Hawick named Gordon Macdonald regarding newspapers, pictures etc, do you know him? I even got to visit a few years back now in 2006. Amazing!

I descend from Samuel's brother Robert who left for England as you mentioned, but what you might not know is that their sister Elizabeth also left Scotland in the 1850's for Australia :)

Can't wait to chat more!

Jenny

just a quick response - I'm from Hawick and definately related on my mum's side to the Staintons. Samuel Stainton was a lay preacher/choir master and founded the Hawick Saxhorn band He was also a stocking maker. He had a brother who left Hawick and I believe ended up in Sheffield. Samuel Stainton had 13 children, some became music teachers (a daughter Charlotte was my mothers grandmother) I've even given my son Stainton as a middle name. One of the sons was known as 'Alec the Bellman' and was the town crier of Hawick.

Hi Maureen
Sorry to take so long to reply. My subscription ran out and I hadn't realised! Yes, the Magdelene that survived is the one who married Henry Knott. I realise now the Staintons were from Appleby. Henry and Magdalene's daughter Sarah married my 3xgreat grandfather Edward Clark and their eldest son, William and his wife Catherine names their eldest son Edward Knott Clark. He was born in 1855 in Brigg.
Regards
Jenny

There were 2 daughters born to Matthew Stainton & Sarah Middleton that were both named Magdelen or Magdalena. The one died at birth or before about age 2, so the next girl was given the same name. Don't know if this is the one that you are looking for. I don't have my records to check, since I'm at work, but they were from Appleby, Lincolnshire if I'm not mistaken. Maureen

Dear Leah
Have just received your message from Message Board, and tried sending you an email c/o Message Board - unfortunately your email address did not appear clearly on my screen. However, I'm now having a stab at trying what I think your email address may be just in case.
The main points of my reply were to thank you for contacting the Message Board (as it seems for once the response to my original enquiry is from someone researching the right Staintons!), and for the details you gave.
Alice Stainton was my husband Peter Stainton Hope's paternal grandmother, and I have had no luck at all finding out just when she left England, or on what ship, or her arrival date in Sydney. The family hearsay is that Alice was the first to come here, that she left England soon after turning 21 (presumably because she no longer needed her parents' permission), and that her siblings followed her out at different times. Possibly the year 1924 is the year when Dorothy (Dora) emigrated to Australia.
I do have some info I'd be happy to send you, but as we are heavily involved in the preparations for our youngest daughter's wedding in November, I may have to leave it for another couple of months. Also, my husband's father, Thomas Stainton Hope, is having a 'big bash' for his 90th birthday in a few weeks, which also requires a lot of my time.
So, once again, thank you for posting your message, with the details you included in it, and I look forward to being able to share more info with you towards the end of the year.
You can contact me at
dawnhope@yahoo.com
In the meantime, best wishes,
Dawn Hope

Alice Stainton was my husband's paternal grandmother, and I have so far had no luck finding out just when she emigrated to Australia - family hearsay is that she was the first to come here, and left England soon after turning 21 when she no longer needed her parents' permission, but I have not been able to find out just when she left for Australia or what ship she came on. The other siblings are believed to have followed her, but at different times, so the year 1924 you mention dhoulf be a great help, although it may simply refer to Dora's arrival here. Do you have any further info on the siblings' emigration please?
I do have some info on the Staintons and their families since they settled here, and will hopefully be able to send it in another couple of months. The reason for the delay is the preparations for our youngest daughter's wedding in November, which is swallowing up most of our time at present. As I find family history completely addictive, I dare not start on anything to do with it, or I'll end up thoroughly caught up with it for days, if not weeks!
Thank you again, and I look forward to being able to share information a little later on. Can you perhaps send me your email address, which will make it easier.
You can contact me at
dawnhope@yahoo.com
All the best,
Dawn Hope

Today I started researching my friends family, her name is Jennifer McGill (nee Wicker). William Stainton born Dec Qtr 1853 Swynnerton, Staffordshire was her great grandfather. He married Dorothy Isabella Mitchell in the Dec Qtr 1884 at Barrow In Furness. Children Ernest Mitchell, Harriet Isabella, Alice, Albert, Dorothy (Dora) and Elsie Elizabeth. As far as I can tell they migrated to Sydney, Australia around 1924. Albert Stainton born 24 Apr 1890 is Jennifer's grandfather. Not found much more yet as only started today. Any information you can provide would be appreciated.

right period, wrong family although there may have been brothers to William who arrived at a different time; he & Matilda arr. Toronto 1854 w/ 3 sons Amos, Joseph, James and had a 4th, Abner; Joseph had 7 kids, boys were Frank, William, Martin, Alfred all bn. 1874-1880; James had sons Herman and Clarence, 1886 and 1899; no clue what happened to Abner, bn. 1865; there was at least one other Stainton family in the ON records-- CH and Amelia, daughter Charlotte Heron, widow, m 2nd time to James Allen in 1875-- they lived in Scarborough, which was small town just east of Toronto--Charlotte may have had a brother who should show in Ontario 1871 census but not in Durham Co which is only one I checked; best bet there seems to be Thomas, age 26 in 1871, farmer, in Durham Co which is east of Toronto, and his widowed mother Elizabeth, 63, bn. England as was Thomas although he may the one shown in neighboring county, Victoria, in 1901 with wife Jane and daughter Eva; only other Staintons 1871 census Durham are John, 43, Margaret, 25 and another Thomas 38, shown as 'mendicant'-- first time I've seen that --who knew beggars could survive in rural Ontario then, let alone get counted in census?? Hope one or more of these is helpful!

Stainton - Hawick Roxburghshire

Hello,

I am researching a Stainton family in Scotland and thought I might see if anyone recognised the names.

I have a Robert Stainton (b. 1825 Hawick, Rox Scotland) to a James Stainton (music teacher) not sure of his mother's name. Unfortunately Robert and his father did not get along and Robert left Scotland after an argument around the 1850's. He was a pastor, politician and a lecturer so not surprising really :)

He married Elizabeth Warburton on 1 May 1856 in Chester Eng and they had one son, Robert Kirk Stainton (b. 2 Dec 1860) before Elizabeth died in 1862. The Rev. Robert Stainton married again in 1863 Eliza Hayton Davis and had a second son James H Stainton.

Any help or a nudge in the right direction would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jenny Clark
Brisbane, Australia
I came across your posting made some time ago. I am researching the Aitken's of Bo'ness and Linlithgow and I have a Richard Aitken (mariner) who had a natural son named Richard in 1813 by an Isabella Stainton. I can find no other trace of her. As Falkirk was extremely close I wonder whether she was a daughter of Joseph. Do you have any other information for me?

Norman Hilton

Stainton's in Scotland

I have come across Stainton's in Scotland whilst researching the Crosthwaite line.

Staintons and Crosthwaite's (through marriage)were involved in the Carron Ironworks/various foundries around Falkirk on the East coast of Scotland. There is likely to be more information on this in the Falkirk Herald Newspaper and in the Carron Ironworks archive which is in the National Archives in Edinburgh.

However, there are at least a couple of books about the Carron Iron Works that would prove useful. I have a small piece by Brian Watters author of "When Iron Flowed like water" which is "Carron Company in the 19th Century " sub-titled :-(under the Staintons and the Dawsons)Which mentions a Joseph Stainton who came to the works in 1780 (why of from where is not known).

Another book is Carron by R H Campbell circa 1960 .

I could possibly provide a rough tree which may prove, or disprove, a link to your family. If you can provide me with information on your family I will see if we have a 'fit'
alt. e-mail
jcsc20610@cableinet.co.uk

Jim C
Scotland
(West Coast)
