I have a great grandfather who was born to Sarah Stairs, I believe she was married to Conrad but this son is not his. Her maiden name is Fisher. They lived in Westmoreland PA. She seems very mysterious as I cannot find much on her children but only on her marriages - email me if you think there is a connection there - kaitlinexl@gmail.com

Hi,

William is the brother of my G G Grandfather, Edward R. Stiars, sons of Martha and William E. Stiars. There is a lot about the family on this website, http://www.kykinfolk.com/stafford/mastiarsland.htm
haven't been about to do a double check on it yet. There's also Fredericksburg Historic Court Records. Says William was widowed and married Emma Dickinson in 1897.

Jill
email: living-bread@hotmail.com

I have no connection to any of these families. I just keep finding interesting little “tidbits” that give our ancestors a personality instead of just a name with d.o.b. and d.o.d. OR it may just give you date(s) you didn't already have. This is from the Rockland (Maine) Gazette dated September 9, 1847:

"Capt. Stairs, pilot of the Canard steamers, who has brought them from Halifax to Boston, and taken them hence ever since the line commenced, died in Halifax a few days ago."

The book was written by a Stairs family member, who, I believe, lived in Ontario. Apparently there were 5 Stairs relatives living in Virginia during the American revolution. They remained neutral, but after the war, pressure was put on them to get out of the U.S. They became United Empire Loyalists, and moved to the Maritimes. The book covers only ONE of the relatives, and the descendants from that ONE line.

It was a private edition, and is long out of print. My sister has one, and if you send me your address, I will see if she will give me the name and address of the publisher.

good luck

Hi I am hoping to encourage male Stairs members to submit a DNA sample to the Sorensen labs for the database. This surname is not common, so I wonder if we are all connected back several generations. My roots come from Beds/Bucks in England. Perhaps we share DNA? My brother has registered with Sorensen labs already. This is a free kit you can ask for. It's a simple mouthwash sample and costs you nothing to submit a sample to the database. Perhaps this might show a link? Would you or someone you know who is a male Stairs member be willing to do this? Thanks Hugs Judith

Hi Geoffrey Stairs. I am taking a long shot here, but my maiden name was Stairs. I'm from MB. CDA I am doing my roots from England and was hoping to find where your roots come from. My brother has sent in a DNA sample to the Sorensen Labs. We are trying to get a variety of male Stairs members to send in a sample to Sorensen Labs to see if we share the same roots. This is a free process and kits are available from the labs. Would you consider this approach? It could prove we share the same roots way back when. If you have questions, please reply to me and I can explain more. Thanks Hugs Judith

My father crossed the border from Canada to Maine, Littleton, as a child but was only Americanized about 15 years ago after discovering on a business trip to Bermuda that he never had been Americanized in the first place. His grandmother, I believe, was a midwife and Dad was actually born on Canadian soil, if the story is told correctly, but apparently the papers were never signed and Dad never knew this into his 50s, but his citizenship has since been corrected. His name is Loomis Craig. His mother's mother and father were Huntley Stairs and Emma Clark who lived somewhere near Nackawick, Woodstock. Huntley lived from 1864-1926 and Emma Clark Stairs lived from 1873-1965. Their daughter Thelma was one of several children and married Ralph Craig, also from that area. I know very little of my family tree on the Stairs side. I just happened to notice a photo of a cemetary gravestone sitting in front of me today I'd taken a few years ago. There I noticed three Huntley Stairs, but my great grandfather was married to Emma Clark.

Stairs book?

Greetings,

My name is Geoffrey Stairs. I was born in Woodstock, NB in 1984 and live here presently with my wife. About 10 years ago I vaguely recall my father receiving a book written by someone in the States detailing the lineage of our clan (including some rather funny anecdotes, if I remember correctly). Can anyone tell me who that author of that book was? I am desperate for a copy as my father ended up sending his to my uncle in Washington years ago. I suspect that limited copies were made, but I thought it was worth a shot anyway. Thanks!

Re: Obit: William Stairs, Nova Scotia, Nov 28, 1865

Obituary. -- In our columns to-day is recorded the death of William STAIRS, Esq., senior, one of the oldest and most esteemed citizens of Halifax. He was attacked with paralysis while riding home from his business on Friday 17th inst. For some days hopes were entertained that he would rally, but on Saturday last unfavorable symptoms appeared from which time he gradually sank until he peacefully expired at a little after one p. m. to-day. For many years Mr. Stairs held a prominent place in the mercantile community, and was always conspicuous among his associates for enterprise and liberality of character as a business man, and for the high toned sense of honor that marked all his dealings. Perhaps he leaves behind him no man in Nova Scotia who has more faithfully discharged all the duties of citizenship. From his earliest manhood until the close of a life somewhat exceeding the allotted span of three score and ten years, his career was one of active usefulness. He served his native city in the office of Mayor, and the Province as a member both of the Legislative Council and House of Assembly. At the time of his death he was President of the Union Bank, a position that he filled ably and honorably for years. He was a man of expansive benevolence, using generously and wisely the fortune that rewarded the industry of his early years; and the affectionate esteem he commanded in all the social and private relations of life was fully equal to the influence he exercised in the public affairs of the country. The limited space of time at our command previous to going to press, renders it impossible for us to-day, to give anything more than this brief and imperfect outline of this good man's career.

Hi again Sara,
I use Family Tree 5 in doing my Tree, but a cousin in N.B. is using Legacy Family Tree, and he likes it over all the rest. You can down-load this free at their web site. if you are interested, you can go to legacyfamilytree.com/ You will be asked to provide your "E"-Mail address, they will send you a password to open and install it. You will get your pass-word in a couple of hours or less. It is worth a try!
Let me know how you make out, then I can send all or part of my file that you would like. Send me an "E"-Mail to cvs@hom.net

Later, Cleve

Hi Cleve, I don't know what formats are available. I just started using the online family tree builder and haven't gotten very far. What are the choices? Is there a format that I can load into the family tree builder on this site? Also, I'm not sure what kind of help I can give you. Since you've found my birthday, I'm guessing you already have a lot (most) of the info. My birth certificate does state my name as Sara Monica Ann however, not Sara Ann - I don't know if the birth certificate was reissued or what. I will be more than happy to answer whatever questions I can.

Thanks
--Sara

You seem to have an awful lot of information about the Stairs in N.B. I'm am just starting to get into trying to trace my roots. I'd be interested in anything you might have and I am be able to get some info to you. I know someone, somewhere in my family has done a family tree - I just need to get ahold of it somehow. My father is Amber, b.1934, his father was Henry, and I believe his father was Amber as well. I do know that our family had also been traced back to Richard Steers. As an aside, my sister, a Stairs, married a Steers - probably some tie way back.

I have Elizabeth Stairs being the daughter of John Susanna Byerly Stairs. Her children include: Susann, William and Joseph Darby. I also saw from the Later Day Saints, but I'm questioning John Darby's middle name, I've seen it as John "Doe" Darby. Elizabeths' siblings include Jacob J.,John Jr., Margaret Stairs Hay, Adam Stairs and Catharine Stairs. Do you have any info on these folks. How about a death date on John Darby and where he may be buried.
