There a strange hand writing on Wm Stancil, 1860 Pickens County Ala. I found him by accident while looking for another kin. If anyone would like to search, type in Junkin, John HH123, Wm is next HH124. He was worth $3000.00, a house carpenter, born Ga 1820.
Gerald Preas

Checking in after some time away. Stancil's in this area around Chattanooga should secure the (full) pension file (W6200) of John Stansill, Mecklenburg County NC. Make sure you get the full file and not the abstracted short version.

In that file is a letter from a George Stancil of a small town just outside of Chattanooga ca 1896. He was looking to connect for DAR purposes. Long story short, he alleged descent from John Stansill (1758-1826) of Mecklenburg Countys son John, who moved to that area and fought in War of 1812. The pension files seemed to bear out his story.

There is a lot more but I'll stop there. I have always flagged posts from Chattanooga/North Ga for this reason...I think you are descended from the patriot from Mecklenburg County NC.

Dr. James McNeill Stancill

Good day everyone. Have any of my fellow Stancil(l) researchers made contact with the wife or children of Dr. James McNeill Stancill (USC Professor Emeritus, Pasadena, CA), who passed away in 2009?

As some of you know, Dr. Stancill had published a draft manuscript in 2005, and I am wondering if he left any files or updated documents. I corresponded with him in the mid-2000's and was very saddened to learn of his passing. Dr. Stancill was a fascinating person and well-published in the field of business management. That is sadly a scenario that has happened far too often in my Stancil research.

I am trying to make contact with the family, with no luck so far - has anyone been successful?

Christy,
My mother was Glady Hill, daughter of Frances and Moses Hill.

Was Eddie Frances's whole brother? Was his mother Cassandra Moore? I have lots of info on the Stancils, but not much on the Moores. Eddie's and France's father was Godfrey Stancil (b. 18 Nov 1854 d. Dec 1923), his father and mother was Allen Stansell (b. 1830) and Elizabeth Sullivan (b.1834). Allen's father William Stancil (b.1803 m. 1832 d. after 1880) and his mother Milley ? (b1815 d. after 1880) Have you been to the Census? If you live around Smithfield go to the Johnston County Genealogical and Historical Society. They are a big help. They have items filed alphabetically, i.e., under S you might find Stancil, or Stancel, always different spellings. I was up there in October of last year and two years before that and made copies of everything I could find on the names I was looking for. Later I go through them to see if they pertain to my family.
Ancestry.com has the census, marriage records and lots of other things. If you get a leaf check it out. You need to verify because just because someone has info doesn't make it correct.

I am in the process of moving from one house to another and have not had time to look over all the items I got in October. Once I get settled I hope to get back on this and straighten everything out.

Is your dad still living? Always ask fathers and grandparents questions to get names of family members. This will help you identify them on census, etc.

Hope this helps you. If you wish to call me please do 904-389-9909
Glenda

Picking back up, he did well. The War certainly ruined my Stancil's as well as a lot of other families.

It sounds like your line of Stancils is in Alabama. Do you know how long they have been there? Reason I ask - some of the descendants of John Stansall, Jr. (the son of the 1683 emigrants from England)moved from eastern NC to Alabama fairly early, and then others from the Mecklenburg NC area followed later in the early 1800's. If you haven't seen it, you may want to look for a book "The Stancill Family" published 1980 by Hugh Stancill. It has a lot on the Stancil's who emigrated to AL and MS.

We seem to have a new rub for our Mecklenburg NC Stancil's - a few new names are showing up in Mecklenburg in the early years (1770's), Thomas Senior and Jacob. I don't know who these gentlement are.

Jesse was a very popular name among the Stancils of North Carolina all the way through the 1700's, which doesn't make your job easier. How sure are you that your Jesse 1770 came from Mecklenburg? I still do not know when Jesse Stansill (brother of John 1758-1826) was born, but he also fought in the War. John and Jesse still seemed to have some links back to eastern NC from whence they came right before the war, Jesse served in both Mecklenburg and down east. I had thought they were two different Jesse's until I saw the State Comptroller's report that they were the same.

I have her death certificate listing C.C. Taylor as her father and Caroline York as her mother. I can't find anything past that on her. Do you have anything? Any photos shared would be very appreciated. I have a copy of a very bad photo of Sarah and James. Hope you are still out there...

David,

I am a descendant of John Stancil and Edy Powell through their daughter, Eda, who married Henry C. Burnett. I am also descended through Jesse Stancil, John's brother, who married Mary (of Scotland) thru their daughter, Mary, who married Henry's son, John C. Burnett.

I am trying to find Mary's maiden name. I know she lived to be 100 years old. Does anyone know where this family is buried? Or does anyone have old photos? I have a letter that Henry C. Burnett wrote in 1855 attesting to John Stancil's service and states he knew John and then lists all John's children and his date of birth and also lists John's wife, Eda and also John's father, John.

Thanks in advance.

Linda

Hi,
I'm an English Stancil.(mothers name). I live in Derbyshire near Barlborough.Just on the border of Nottinghamshire one way (about 7 miles away and yorkshire Doncaster less than 20 miles away.I can trace back to Thomas Stansal b.1820 Soutwell Notts and there is a Nathan Stansal married in Southwell, who date wise could be Thomas' father. Southwell is a small village- farming land. There are some connections with Lincolnshire/Notts which is traditional English farming land.Tickhill/Doncaster has historic connections with the English civil War.In the unrest at that time and with the influence of the puritanical Oliver Cromwell emmigration to America seemed to be an option worth trying out.I have also noticed there was a Jesse Stancil mentioned on a passenger list into England but I have not followed the evidence through.
Would be really grateful if anyone can fill in any gaps for me

Could please tell me what is in the Bible? My aunt's name was Ann Stancil. She had a daughter named Sharon and she and my uncle lived in TX and Shreveport,La. She passed in 1996 and my uncle passed in 1999. His name was Melvin Leo Stancil. All of my family on that side has passed and I have no one to ask for info. He was first married to Ida Mae ? and had a daughter named Debra. I was hoping that the Bible might be from this family. He has 1 living sister, however I am not allowed to speak to her any longer. Long story.

Thanks, Pamn

Looking for information regarding Mississippi Stancil born 11 Jun 1869 in or near Marietta Cobb, GA. She married William Tennyson 13 Jul 1890 in or near Holly Pond, AL.

What I am researching is Mississippi's parents and William's as well. I have some saying her parents are Franklin Stancil and Mary Jane Martin, and I have few that say her mother was a Frances.

William's father is said to be presley rias tennyson, but my grandfather, who would be William's grandson says that William's parents are Hiram and Sarah Bauder....but am unsure as he would not have ever known his grandfather.

Last name could've been spelled various ways, stancill, stancel, stancil, stansel, stansall, stansell, etc...

Any help would be wonderful!

Sorry for the delay in responding. Arthur Floyd was my grandfather making John Henry my great grandfather. My grandndpaerents left AR a few years after WWII but my father and his siblings spent much of their childhood visiting Mt. Home. I don't know a whole lot about my geat uncles. I only met them a handfull of times but I will try to give you as much info as I can.

Perhaps I have been looking in the wrong place. I was recently pouring over some old notes that I had taken when I first questioned my grandmother about her family. At the time I was just beginning her side of the tree & often we over look things we think are not important. I had written down that she reported her family had lived in Ga., Alabama & came from ARKANSAS. I assumed this was on the "Towns" side of the family and never considered or questioned the Stansill name.
Minnie Stansill born abt. 1869- 70 married R.M. Towns 1885.
My grandmothers family is native american.
A distant cousin said Joe Stansill was Minnies father. Joe Stansill was Hillman Stansills Brother. Does anyone have any info or connections?

If you're still looking - there's a family reunion for the descendants of John Thomas and Delanie Stancil that's been held every Sept since 1902. If that's that one you're looking for - see www.stancilreunion.com

Yes, I have Eli Nimmons Stancil's (b 1848, Pickens, SC.) father as Eli Stancil (b.abt 1833, Greenville, SC). I have a list of Eli Nimmons Stancil's children and some info as well as James Hamilton Stancil's descent. JT
